Chris “Ludacris” Bridges never planned on being an actor when he started his rap career during the late ’90s. He attributes his successful transition from music to acting to late writer-director John Singleton, who gave him his breakout role as Tej Parker in the “The Fast and the Furious” (2001) sequel “2 Fast 2 Furious” (2003).
During a discussion about his new role as Eddie Garrick in Disney+’s new Christmas movie “Dashing Through the Snow,” Bridges discussed his more than 20-year career as an actor, and how acting initially was never “part of the plan.”
While his debut role was playing an unsatisfied customer in record producer and filmmaker DJ Pooh’s comedy “The Wash” (2001), it wasn’t until Singleton cast him as a former street racer and mechanic that his acting career went full speed ahead.

Summer isn’t over yet but HBO and its streaming arm Max are already moving on to fall. With its list of new releases for August 2023, Max is focusing on football! The American kind, mind you, not the actually footy kind.
August 2023 sees the release of two major football documentaries on HBO and Max. The first is the premiere of Hard Knocks on Aug. 10. The new season of long-running NFL training camp docuseries will center on the New York Jets, new employers of legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On Aug. 23, Max will air the aptly named Bs High. The doc tells the stranger-than-fiction story of high school football team Bishop Sycamore, which pulled off one of the more notable sports scams you’re likely to ever hear about.
Not of the football variety but in keeping with the North American sports theme will be season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on Aug.

In November 2001, Ludacris was set to release his third album, “Word of Mouf.” At the same time, however, his debut on film, “The Wash,” was also about to hit theaters. Luda’s role in the DJ Pooh-directed comedy starring Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg was small. But “The Wash,” along with his goofball antics in several of his music videos, put Luda in front of major league filmmakers such as the late John Singleton and Paul Haggis. In back-to-back films, the rapper became a movie star as Tej Parker in 2003’s “2 Fast 2 Furious,” followed in 2004 by the Oscar-winning “Crash.” Some 30 more movies would follow.
“The theatricality of my videos, my image — it was a bit of transition, going into acting, playing myself playing the Ludacris persona,” says Luda, credited in film as Chris Bridges. “But ‘2 Fast 2 Furious’ was a great way to start, because the year after was when ‘Crash’ came along.

A couple months after spotlighting the world’s greatest actress, the Criterion Channel have taken a logical next step towards America’s greatest actress. May (or: next week) will bring an eleven-film celebration of Jennifer Jason Leigh, highlights including Verhoeven’s Flesh + Blood, Miami Blues, Alan Rudolph’s Mrs. Parker, her directorial debut The Anniversary Party, and Synecdoche, New York, and a special introduction from Leigh. Another actor’s showcase localizes directorial collaborations: Jimmy Stewart’s time with Anthony Mann, an eight-title series boasting the likes of Winchester ’73 and The Man from Laramie. Two more: a survey of ’80s Asian-American cinema (Chan Is Missing being the best-known) and 14 movies by Seijun Suzuki.
That would be enough for one month (or two), but No Bears and Cette maison will have their streaming premieres, while Criterion Editions offers the Infernal Affairs trilogy (plus its packed set), Days of Heaven, and the aforementioned Chan Is Missing.

When Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg took the stage at the Super Bowl halftime show on Sunday, they brought a lot of history with them. After all, this is the team that gave the world “Nuthin but a ‘G’ Thang,” the Doggystyle album, “Still D.R.E.,” the 2000 Up in Smoke arena tour, and one of the all-time-great Coachella sets back in 2012. Without any doubt, they are one of the mightiest duos in rap history, rivaled only by the likes of Outkast, Run the Jewels, and Eric B. and Rakim.

Jackée Harry and George Wallace have joined the cast of the Freeform comedy pilot “Everything’s Trash” in recurring roles, Variety has learned exclusively.
The iconic pair join previously announced series star Phoebe Robinson in the half-hour pilot. It follows Phoebe, a 30-something podcast star navigating her messy life. When her younger brother Jayden emerges as a leading politician, she’s forced to grow up, so she relies on her friends and close-knit family to help her figure out adulthood, since she doesn’t seem to have a clue. The series is inspired by Robinson’s book, “Everything’s Trash But It’s Okay.”

You've seen him act in films like "Set It Off," "Training Day," and "The Wash;" now Dr. Dre is about to make his debut headlining a TV series that will be backed by Apple - the company he sold Beats Electronics to, 2 years ago, for a whopping $3.4 billion. So this is a continuation of that relationship. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dre will star in what will be a scripted series that is, as of today, being kept underwraps; meaning, no details on what exactly it's about, other than it might be semi-autobiographical in nature. All we know with certainty is that it will be titled "Vital Signs" - a dark drama that will unfold over 6...

After receiving a record number of applications, the California Film Commission announced June 4 that it has awarded tax credits to 14 features, 14 TV series, and three movies of the week. The $100-million incentive program designed to stop runaway production successfully lured the TNT series “King & Maxwell” from Vancouver, British Columbia, and MTV’s “Teen Wolf” from Atlanta. (The latter relocated last year and kept its “relocating” classification.) The list of features receiving the production incentive included Warner Bros.’ “Entourage,” based on the HBO series; “Purge 2” from Blumhouse Productions; and Lionsgate’s “The Wash,” about a car wash run by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. The commission estimated that these projects will spend more than $771 million in California and employ an estimated 2,980 cast members, 3,730 crew members, and 80,680 extras/stand-ins.

Yup, that Dr. Dre, the producer who can rap and control the maestro at the same time with the dope rhyme that he kicks. Deadline reports that the rapper, producer, entrepreneur and headphone-maker is getting into the TV game with an hour-long drama script development deal at FX. The project "explores present day Los Angeles through the lenses of the music business and the crime business." Sidney Quashie, who worked with Spike Lee on his no-go NBC drama project about post-Katrina New Orleans "NoLa," will write the script and executive produce with Dre. Dre and the artist formerly (?) known as Snoop Dogg performed alongside a hologram of the late Tupac Shakur at Coachella earlier this year. In addition to having directed music videos, Dre's dabbled in film before with appearances in the 1996 bank robbery film "Set It Off" and 2001's "The Wash" and "Training Day." He signed a deal with New Line.

Beginning with “Half Baked” in 1998, and moving on to supporting roles in “The Wash," "Starsky & Hutch" and “Training Day,” hip-hop mogul/herb enthusiast Snoop Dogg has made a second name for himself in film and TV, and news comes today that rapper Wiz Khalifa has joined forces with Snoop on a new comedy.
“Mac And Devin Go To High School,” directed by music video helmer Dylan Brown, has been acquired by Anchor Bay Films for release. The film stars Dogg and Khalifa as the titular characters, and follows Devin (Khalifa) as a high-school whiz-kid turned anxious over the thought of his valedictorian speech, and his lack of real-life experience to justify it. Enter Mac (Dogg), a senior entering his 15th school year, who sets out to show Devin what he's been missing. Just a guess, but weed might possibly factor in as one of those life lessons.

Dr. Dre knows beats and he's one of the best at verbally eviscerating his enemies. But now the reclusive rap icon and music mogul is getting ready to enter a whole new arena of battle: the slasher movie.
According to Variety, Dre is set to co-produce the horror thriller "Thaw" for the Crucial Films movie banner. The script for the film will be written by Vik Weet, with a story focusing on an "ancient evil that emerges from the rapidly melting ice in the Yukon."
Variety noted that Weet curiously has also written another script for an as-yet-untitled thriller, to be directed by action veteran Renny Harlin about the investigation into the 1959 Dyatlov Pass incident, where nine experienced hikers were found dead in Russia's Ural Mountains.

The network that was once home to sitcoms starring Will Smith and LL Cool J is hoping to turn Snoop Dogg into a comedy lead as well.
NBC has bought a pitch from Snoop and producer Don Reo ("My Wife and Kids"), according to The Hollywood Reporter. Snoop Dogg will star as the father of a group of unruly kids and also serve as a producer.
The premise sounds a little different than the idea we came up with when the project was first announced: A show called "What It Do, Nephew," in which he takes in his brother or sister's son. But that's Ok.
Snoop Dogg has a pretty sizable acting resume, including starring roles in "The Wash" and "Soul Plane" and several sitcom guest appearances, including two episodes of "Brothers" (which Reo executive produced) in the 2009-10 season. He also starred in the E! reality series "Snoop Dogg's Father Hood,...

Legendary rapper Snoop Dogg may be a master of rhyme, but he's no stranger to the world of fine cinema. Snoop parlayed his music career into starring roles in such films as "Training Day," "Bones," "The Wash" and "Starsky & Hutch." Heck, he even found a way to show up in the mother of reality television, "The Real Cancun." Snoop knows show business.
Now, he's set his sights on helping the next generation of eager entertainment wunderkinds. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Snoop is teaming up with newcomer Wiz Khalifa on "High School," a new movie that the rapper calls "a comedy stoner movie, a little something for the stoners." Meaning... there's a little extra emphasis on the "high" part.
The project blossomed from Snoop and Wiz's collaborative efforts and friendship. Both musicians have albums on the way (Wiz's debut "Rolling Papers" bows on March 29, while Snoop's "Doggumentary" lands the same...

It's October 20, which can only mean one thing: It's time to celebrate the birthday of one Calvin Broadus, known best to the rest of the world as Snoop Dogg. The veteran rapper/actor/entrepreneur turns 39 years old today, and it's staggering to think about everything that Dogg has done over the course of his career. It's an incredible body of work that includes some truly killer records (including modern classics like "Gin and Juice," "Murder Was the Case," "Drop It Like It's Hot," "Sexual Seduction" and the recent "I Wanna Rock"), memorable film roles (notably appearances in "Training Day," "Bones," "The Wash" and "Starsky and Hutch") and countless business successes (there are Snoop Dogg-branded skateboards, video games, porn films, action figures, hot dogs and pet products). He also provides a voice for Tom Tom Gps products, which is amazing.
But Snoop's side projects are often overlooked, which is a shame,...

After directly jumping from high school to the NBA, LeBron James never got to experience the college basketball ritual of March Madness, but if it were a condition rather than an event, I'd say his decision to star in the Universal comedy "Fantasy Basketball Camp" might just count for some sort of insanity. James is set to play the lead in the film, directed by "Soul Men" helmer Malcolm D. Lee, about a group of friends who head to Vegas and learn life lessons in addition to tips on how to set picks at the Cleveland Cavalier's fantasy camp.
Of course, James already has some big screen experience under his belt with last year's Spirit Award-nominated doc "More Than a Game" about his Ohio high school squad, as well as some small-screen experience on "Saturday Night Live" and multi-character Nike commercials. Still, the track record for basketball stars crossing over...

Rapper Snoop Dogg is being set to play Huggy Bear in the new Starsky And Hutch movie. Ben Stiller will be playing Starsky, with Owen Wilson as Hutch in the remake of the 1970's cult classic. Stiller says of the film, "It's going to be cool. There hasn't been a really good buddy cop movie since the Lethal Weapon series." Snoop has been making waves in the film industry recently, starring in Halloween horror Bones and comedy The Wash. Huggy Bear was played by Antonio Fargas in the original TV series.

Rap mogul Dr. Dre dreams of succeeding as a Hollywood film maker - but won't exploit ghetto culture to do so. The rhyme master believes making films which center around hip hop culture would be a waste of his talents, and cites Quentin Tarantino and Guy Ritchie as his idols. He says, "I think most people that are involved in hip hop want to get into the movie business to make movies about hip hop or their neighborhood. I have a broader picture of what I want to do. I want to create movies like Pulp Fiction or Snatch, something really creative that steps out of what I do." Dre stars in and co-produced new movie The Wash, which also features his pal Snoop Dogg, but insists he's still just learning his trade. He says, "I'm learning how movies are marketed and distributed. In my movie career, I feel I'm where I was when I was just starting out. I don't expect The Wash to be The Godfather. We only spent $3 million and went and had some fun."...
