Amy Adams And Jeremy Renner Bring ‘Arrival’ To Academy-Packed Hollywood Hills Screening
Private screenings are a dime a dozen during awards season. Whether it’s Los Angeles, New York, London or even San Francisco, Academy members hold numerous events for each other (most often at the behest of studios) to spread the word about a film or a specific contender. Usually these intimate affairs don’t start to percolate until Thanksgiving or even before Christmas, but Paramount Pictures got things rolling a bit earlier than normal last night for Denis Villeneuve’s “Arrival.

Alec Baldwin puts TCM's Robert Osborne in the hot seat on 'Private Screenings'
Robert Osborne is used to interviewing screen legends, but now he knows how it feels to sit in the other chair.

As Turner Classic Movies begins its 20th-anniversary year, its principal host -- who was an actor before he became a Hollywood columnist and historian -- recounts how his career began and progressed in a new "Private Screenings" special at 8 p.m. Et/5 Pt Monday (Jan. 6). Alec Baldwin, who hosted the Saturday-night TCM film series "The Essentials" with Osborne from 2009 to 2011, asks the questions.

"It never occurred to me," the ever-genial Osborne tells Zap2it of becoming a "Private Screenings" guest. "Way back, Dwayne Hickman [the former star of TV's 'The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis'] said, 'You know, you come into everybody's living room every night, and they don't know you. They like you, but they don't know much about you. Sometime, you should do a documentary about yourself.'

"I think that was even before we had a 'Private Screenings' franchise,...

Alec Baldwin Lands Another TV Hosting Gig (for a Day)
Alec Baldwin
Weep not for Alec Baldwin; his MSNBC show “Up Late With Alec Baldwin” might be a thing of the past, but he’ll be back on the small screen soon. However briefly. Taking a chance that Baldwin won’t hurl any homophobic slurs between now and Jan. 6, TCM has booked the former “30 Rock” star to guest host “Private Screenings” on that night. Alec Baldwin Returning To TV Hosting On January 6 – For TCM
Alec Baldwin is returning to TV hosting on January 6 — that was quick. Baldwin will be seen taking over hosting duties on TCM’s Private Screenings to interview TCM’s Robert Osbourne . Osbourne, who usually hosts Private Screenings among his many duties on the network, is switching chairs that one night, to pick the night’s four movies — and be interviewed about his career by Baldwin. Baldwin’s a good choice — of the several actors who’ve co-host TCM’s The Essentials franchise with Osbourne over the years, he was by far the best. Baldwin co-hosted the 2009 and 2010 seasons of the film showcase, spotlighting a specific movie each week, with discussion before and after the film. After Baldwin left, Drew Barrymore took over. The Osbourne table-turning is part of TCM’s celebration of its 20th anniversary, Osbourne having been the face of the network since its launch. Baldwin’s interview with...

Buyers head into busy weekend in Toronto
Private screenings ramp up, including Im Global’s hot Venice premiere Locke.

Us buyers were in pursuit of Tom Hardy starrer Locke heading into a packed weekend of screenings punctuated by a high volume of private events.

To the bewilderment of some, Locke has not landed an official Toronto slot despite earning rave reviews in Venice, but that has not stopped Im Global and CAA from staging four private screenings over the coming days.

The first took place on Friday morning and proved a hot ticket as dozens of acquisitions executives were shut out of Tiff Bell Lightbox Cinema 7.

ICM Partners showed a trailer from its Nina Simone film, Nina, while Voltage Pictures screened Terry Gilliam’s Venice selection The Zero Theorem.

The volume of private screenings is a new development in Toronto as sales agents leverage events to overcome scheduling hurdles and win hearts and minds.

Lina Romay – Cult Horror Actress Dead at 57
I first discovered the captivating allure of Lina Romay 30 years ago in the early days of VHS when I rented a tape called The Loves Of Irena on the old Private Screenings label. It was Spanish director Jess Franco’s erotic 1973 twist on the vampire legend also known as (among other titles) Female Vampire, The Bare Breasted Countess, and Erotikill. Romay spends most of her screen time almost completely nude, strolling about in the fog wearing nothing but a cape and big wide black boots and I was immediately smitten. I sought out more films with the actress and found out she was Franco’s common-law wife and would perform in over 100 films from the prolific cult director including such gems as Barbed Wire Dolls, Jack The Ripper, and Wanda The Wicked Warden (with Dyanne Thorne, it was later retitled and sold as an Ilsa sequel). Romay and Franco had...

Angela Lansbury 'very grateful' for Turner Classic Movies spotlight and 'Murder' move
"I'm not one of those people who sits in the dark, looking at their work from 70 years earlier," Angela Lansbury insists. "I'm really not."

Still, the widely loved stage and screen star is pleased that many of her films are about to be showcased by Turner Classic Movies. The channel has named the "Murder, She Wrote" television icon its Star of the Month for January, with Lansbury festivals running each Wednesday.

The titles range from her screen debut in 1944's "Gaslight" (Jan. 4) to her chilling portrayal of one of movie history's most manipulative mothers in 1962's "The Manchurian Candidate" (Jan. 18) -- both Oscar-nominated performances.

"When I see it now," Lansbury tells Zap2it of her "Gaslight" work, "I say, 'How did you ever have the chutzpah to play that role as you did, at that age?' I'm enormously interested in how I arrived at that performance, but I also...

A Still from Shor In The City

Balaji Entertainment’s Shor In The City faced serious issues with the censor board regarding certification

Private screenings for the Bollywood core circuit is a common practice mostly done to entertain feedback. However, Shor In The City’s private screenings proved troublesome for the team. The film was being shown without the censor board certificate, and some insider leaked the news to the censor board.

According to a source, “The censor board up until Monday afternoon refused to issue the certificate and sent Balaji a show cause notice questioning the production house about the screenings.” However, Balaji was clever enough to control the situation and sent someone personally to the censor board to sort out the matter. Fortunately, the certificate was issued on Monday. Tanuj Garg, CEO of Balaji Motion Pictures, briefly commented, ?We have received the censor certificate.

The Importance of Being Ernest
At 94 the legendary Ernest Borgnine doesn't want to be called "Mr. Borgnine," preferring "Ernest" or even "Ernie." Speaking in his signature gravelly voice, Borgnine is matter-of-fact about his achievements, still delighted and slightly awed that he has been able to make his living doing what he loves most: acting. He continues to be enthralled with movies, though he is no admirer of much of what is produced today and is dismissive about acting methods. "I learned to act by just sitting on a park bench and watching people go by," he says. "I follow what the author has written and take it from there. I don't have a method. You work with your head and your heart and then you create a character."Whatever his method—or perhaps more precisely, non-method—it has worked for him. For more than six decades, the Oscar winner has rolled up more than 200 movie and TV credits,...

Liza Minnelli Opens Up About Her Legendary Parents and Her Amazing Longevity
Oscar, Emmy, Tony and Grammy Legend Award winner Liza Minnelli finally joins Robert Osborne's illustrious guest list on Saturday's episode of Private Screenings (10/9c, TCM). I watched her film the chat in the New York's West Village back in June, looking remarkably limber just a few months after knee replacement surgery. Having had the opportunity to read both Michael Joseph Gross's Advocate interview with Liza and to preview Osborne's Private Screenings conversation--and as someone committed to the craft of the face-to-face interview--i'm struck by the intriguingly disparate approaches by both interviewers. Whereas Gross takes a hard-hitting (i.e., rude?) gay-centric approach, Osborne takes the high road and treats the iconic star (and her legendary parents Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli) with nothing but tact and respect; clearly an instance of different strokes for different folks.

Turner Classic Movies to Pay Tribute to Legendary Actor Tony Curtis
Turner Classic Movies will be paying tribute to the late legendary actor Tony Curtis. The 24-hour marathon will kick off on Sunday, October 10 and will feature 12 films.

Curtis, who died at the age of 85 of Wednesday, was a longtime supporter of TCM.

"Tony Curtis has been one of TCM's most supportive and best friends from the time he joined us for Private Screenings to his participation in our TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood this past April," TCM host Robert Osborne said. "We'll miss him terribly as an actor, as a buoyant personality and especially as a close pal who made the world seem a much friendlier, more optimistic place to be."

Tom Brown, TCM's vice president of original productions, worked with Curtis on numerous occasions. Brown stated in a press release, "It was a great privilege to know Tony both professionally and personally. Through his many contributions to the network,...

TCM: Private Screenings—Interview With Ernest Borgnine
Along with discussing TCM’s upcoming “31 Days of Oscar” and reminiscing on Arlene Dahl, Robert Osborne and I talked about Ernest Borgnine, with whom he recently taped an interview for TCM’s “Private Screenings”, which will premiere on Monday, January 26, 2009, 5:00Pm (Pt), followed by a four-film tribute. Borgnine, a venerable 92-year-old, is the oldest living Academy Award®-winning actor, now that Charlton Heston has passed away. Osborne and I exchanged a few comments regarding this Hollywood legend and then a few hours later I was offered the chance to share a few minutes with Ernie as well.

* * * Robert Osborne: [Ernie] may be matched with Olivia DeHaviland because she’s 92 as well. Jennifer Jones, I believe, is a couple of years younger. I must say that—knowing both of them—Borgnine and Olivia, is that they are both examples of how great it can be to live that long if you have good genes.
