Every studio wants its own massive cinematic universe. Though many have tried (never forget the Dark Universe), none have managed to be nearly as successful as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony's equivalent, the universe formerly known as Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters (or Spumc), is now four movies deep (with at least two more coming this year). All the movies so far have revolved around supporting characters in the "Spider-Man" comics, mostly villains, but that's about to change this weekend.
The latest entry in Sony's Marvel universe is "Madame Web," the first movie that doesn't center on a villain, but instead, focuses on a hero and ally of Spider-Man. A sign of the downfall of civilization, or just the latest proof of superhero fatigue, "Madame Web" follows Cassandra Webb, a paramedic who discovers she has the spider-like ability to see the future. Netflix scored 18 Oscar nominations for its 2023 films, with eight for feature films — the most of any distributor. All told, Netflix had nine nominations in top categories incuding Best Picture, International Film, Animated Feature, acting, and writing categories.
Not that Netflix’s domestic viewers seemed to notice. Since the Oscar nomination announcement January 23, not one nominated film reentered its top 10 most watched film list. Since then, two obscure titles have held the top spot: “The Hill,” a faith-based sports biopic that grossed under $8 million when it was released last summer, and “The Postcard Killings,” a 2020 home video-released European murder mystery directed by Oscar-winning director Denis Tanovic (“No Man’s Land”).
Nominees fared somewhat better in VOD viewing. Led by “Oppenheimer” (Universal), all five Best Picture nominees that are available to view and without a streaming alternative placed on at least one top 10 list.

Two years ago, Souheila Yacoub took a call from an unknown number – and on the other end of line was Denis Villeneuve.
“I was so blacked out thinking how unreal it all was that I didn’t really understand everything that happened,” the actor tells Variety. “All I know is he asked me to read for ‘Dune: Part Two’ and shortly thereafter he offered me the part – and I was trying to stay professional, but on the inside I was crying, ‘This is so surreal!’”
One question the Swiss-born, Paris-based gymnast-turned-actor thought best not to ask was how she found her way onto Villeneuve’s radar to begin with.
“I was so nervous that he’d made mistake – that he was actually thinking of someone else – that I never dared to ask,” she laughs. “So I just signed the contract and showed up on set.”

A whole bunch of new horror movies are headed our way this Halloween season, and Rotten Tomatoes is previewing many of them with their new Fall Horror & Sci-Fi Preview 2023.
Included in the mix is an upcoming horror movie titled In the Fire, which hadn’t been on our radar up to this point. It’s coming this October and stars Amber Heard (Aquaman).
Rotten Tomatoes previews, “Amber Heard stars as a doctor who travels to a remote plantation to treat a young boy who demonstrates unusual abilities. The local priest (Eduardo Noriega), however, believes the boy is possessed and doesn’t believe conventional medicine can help him. This is the first foray into the genre for director and co-writer Conor Allyn, whose best known film to date is the 2021 neo-Western drama No Man’s Land.”

At times Bosnia and Herzegovina has looked like it was stuck in a bit of a no-man’s land when it comes to film production, lacking the financial fire-power to press forward, but its TV series business is booming.
The Southeast European country boasts two Oscar nominations – Danis Tanović’s “No Man’s Land,” which nabbed a statuette in 2002, and Jasmila Žbanić’s “Quo Vadis, Aida?,” which was nominated in 2021 – and its filmmakers have enjoyed success on the festival circuit, but it still hasn’t upped its meagre level of production, especially in terms of fiction features, with only one or two majority Bosnian films produced a year.
The problem lies in the “messy and unregulated model of audiovisual support in general,” according to producer-director Jasmin Duraković, whose film “The Glory of Unhappiness” screens in the Bh Film sidebar at Sarajevo Film Festival, which presents the recent crop of films with investment from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Veteran actor Nana Patekar, who is known for films such as ‘Welcome’, ‘Natsamrat’, ‘Parinda’, ‘Taxi No. 9 2 11’, will be heard in the upcoming film ‘Gadar 2’ which stars Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel in the lead.
He will be giving the introduction of ‘Gadar 2’ to the moviegoers at the very start of the film. The anticipation for ‘Gadar 2’ increases as the release date draws closer.
The film is a sequel to the 2001 blockbuster which clashed in theatres with the Aamir Khan-starrer ‘Lagaan’. Both the films had a deep impact on Hindi cinema as both of them went on to become cult films with ‘Lagaan’ also making it to the Academy nominations where it lost to the Bosnian film ‘No Man’s Land’.
Earlier, the makers of ‘Gadar 2’ released the reprised version of the hit track ‘Udd Jaa Kaale Kaava’ which took social media by storm and intrigued the fans.

Eitan Mansuri, who attended Series Mania Festival to pitch season 2 of “No Man’s Land” (pictured), is re-teaming with award-winning Israeli director Samuel Maoz on his next film “It’s Good to Die For Your Country.”
The project will mark Maoz’s follow up to “Foxtrot” and “Lebanon” which won Venice’s Silver and Golden Lion awards, respectively. Mansuri told Variety that “It’s Good to Die For Your Country” will be like the third opus of a trilogy on war, completing “Foxtrot” and “Lebanon.”

While the exact plot remains under wraps, Mansuri revealed that it will revolve around two childhood friends in their late 50’s and 60’s who grew up believing that...

They compete against Greek series Milky Way, which opened the festival, Viaplay’s futuristic Russell Tovey drama The Fortress, Red Skies from Israel, The Actor from Iran and Fleeting Lies from Spain. Each will have its world premiere at the event.
The Power is a fantasy series set in a world where the physical balance of power between men and women switches when electric arcs emerge from the fingers of teenage girls all around the world. Debuting later this month, it comes from Sister, the UK producer behind Chernobyl and is based on Naomi Alderman’s sci-fi novel.

Exclusive: Apple TV+ has picked up Drops of God, a series set in the world of fine wine based on a Japanese manga property, from Legendary Entertainment.
Deadline understands that the streamer beat out a number of suitors to land the international series, which is in multiple languages including English, French and Japanese.
However, the most interesting element of the deal is that it marks one of the first times that Apple has dipped its toe into international co-productions and licensing; the majority of its scripted series to date have been fully owned originals. We hear that the first season of Tehran and Losing Alice were picked up in a similar manner.
Drops of God is written by Quoc Dang Tran, who wrote on French series Call My Agent and created Disney+’s Parallèles, the streamer’s first French language series, and directed by Oded Ruskin, who has directed episodes...

For the longest time, "The Handmaid's Tale" viewers have maintained that getting out of Gilead would solve all of June's (Elisabeth Moss) problems. After a tumultuous fourth season, we've seen June finally enjoy a taste of freedom after many years of being subjected to rigorous systemic injustice and violent ordeals. On a more shocking note, June carried out her own form of justice when she avenged herself and countless other women by orchestrating a plan to take down her abuser Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes), for good. Here's the thing, though — seeking refuge in Canada has only made June angrier, and it will take some time for Gilead to get out of her mind.
Upon learning that Fred Waterford would be set free in Geneva for yielding to the Canadian government, June recruited the assistance of Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) and Nick (Max Minghella). They offered the Canadian government a deal...

In some ways it’s a year of transition for the Sarajevo Film Festival, which sees former industry head and co-director Jovan Marjanović take the helm as festival director, while long-time staffer Maša Marković takes over as head of industry. For Marković, who began her career at the long-running Bosnian fest 15 years ago, the change “was kind of organic,” offering the kind of smooth transition that has allowed Sarajevo to retain its position as the leading industry confab in Southeast Europe.
For nearly three decades, the festival has identified and launched local talent while serving as a think tank of sorts for the region’s rapidly evolving screen industries. This year’s CineLink Industry Days program will stick to that time-tested formula, even as it tries to adjust to dramatic shifts in the way that content in the region and around the globe is being produced and distributed.

Two of the highest-profile independents on the Spanish-language movie scene, Colombia’s 64-a Films and Spain’s Latido Films, are teaming to develop, produce and distribute premium TV and platform series.
Playing to their complementary expertise, Latido and 64-a will co-develop and co-produce titles, with 64-a overseeing physical production and Latido spearheading distribution.
Much of 64-a and Latido’s first development slate will be presented to potential partners at MipCancun, which kicks off Tuesday evening in Mexico, running Nov. 16-19.
Designed by 64-a founder Diego F. Ramírez and Juan Torres, Latido Films director of sales, the production alliance builds on the partners’ collaboration on two of the most successful of recent movie titles: Laura Mora’s feature debut “Killing Jesus,” a fest favorite sold to 40 countries; and Carlos Moreno’s “Lavaperros,” a Netflix Top 10 hit across Latin America.
First projects, unveiled to Variety in exclusivity, are squarely aimed at the...

Describing its world premiere on the opening night of the Sarajevo Film Festival as “magic,” Oscar-winning Bosnian director Danis Tanović (“No Man’s Land”) called his latest feature “a love letter to our city,” offering it as a beacon of hope in troubled times to the people of Sarajevo.
Speaking to Variety the day after the premiere, Tanović described an emotional night as his feel-good film “Not So Friendly Neighborhood Affair” opened the festival’s 27th edition.
“For me, the Sarajevo Film Festival is my home. Sarajevo is my home,” he said. “Last night was beautiful, because…we are getting out of this dire situation in which we were in a bad place for quite some time. We still are – we didn’t get out of this mess yet. So to put a bit of humor and a funny look on everything we’ve gone through helps. Last night was beautiful because everybody came out happy.

There have been a lot of adaptations (primarily for TV) of megaselling author James Patterson’s pulpy fictions, none particularly memorable, with the possible exception of hit 1997 thriller “Kiss the Girls.” But then, his books seldom aim for much more than disposable entertainment, so it’s apt enough that their screen versions should follow suit.
By that standard, there’s nothing really wrong with “The Postcard Killings,” which derives from a one-shot 2010 collaboration with Swedish crime novelist Liza Marklund that hit No. 1 on the U.S. bestseller list. But there’s nothing very right about the British-American co-production, either. Starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan as an NYPD detective tracking his own daughter’s serial killers across Europe, this uninspired detour into impersonally commercial English-language terrain for Bosnian director Danis Tanovic (an Oscar winner for 2001’s “No Man’s Land”) should provide Patterson’s fans and undemanding miscellaneous viewers with an acceptably slick...

There’s a sentimental Oscar race brewing for Best Original Score between cousins Randy Newman (“Marriage Story”) and Thomas Newman (“1917”), who are also going head to head for the Golden Globe. And neither has ever won the Academy Award in this category.
They belong, of course, to the legendary musical Newman family, with a record 92 nominations between them. Randy, who is also up this season for the “Toy Story 4” Original Song, “I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away,” has won two Oscars in the category, and boasts 20 nominations total (including the scores for “The Natural” and “Ragtime”). Thomas, meanwhile, has 14 nominations (including the scores for “American Beauty” and “The Shawshank Redemption”).
The Academy loves a good Hollywood story, and this current race between the dueling Newmans could finally pave the way for one of them to finally win. The question is: Which one? That’s hard to...

After directing back-to-back Bond films “Skyfall” and “Spectre,” Sam Mendes’ agent told him, “Get off your ass and write something yourself!” And so he did, recruiting Krysty Wilson-Cairns out of his “Penny Dreadful” writing room. First they adapted Gay Talese’s “The Voyeur’s Motel,” which fell apart over rights and truthfulness issues; a second aborted project followed.
The third time was the charm with “1917,” a project that Mendes could control start to finish. As soon as Steven Spielberg read the script, DreamWorks was on board; Spielberg also backed Mendes’ directorial debut, “American Beauty,” which won five Oscars including Best Picture and Director. If “1917” were to repeat that feat 20 years later, it would be the first time in Oscar history.
While there’s no question “1917” will rack up technical nods and a likely win for cinematographer Roger Deakins, the movie rests on its anti-war script and empathetic performances, especially rising British actor George MacKay,...

Whenever a filmmaker attempts and pulls off something really noteworthy, it’s cause for celebration. What Sam Mendes has managed to accomplish with 1917 is truly stunning. Yes, I have some small critiques of the film that make it seem like I’m not as over the moon for it as most of my colleagues, but this is still a technical achievement basically unparalleled in recent cinematic history. This is not just a war movie. If it were just that, it would still be worthy of acclaim. However, what we have here is both a passion project and an evolution of the medium, all in one. The film is, as you might have guessed, a war drama, taking place in 1917 during the height of World War One. Specifically, it centers on two young British infantrymen about to be sent into hell. When Lance Corporal Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman) is told he has...

The screenwriter walks us through real events that inspired 1917, and her thoughts on supposed Lord of the Rings allusions.
Krysty Wilson-Cairns is quick to describe herself as a history nerd. She happily said as much when we first met several months ago to discuss 1917, and she recalled childhood afternoons watching World War documentaries in her grandfather’s Glasgow den. Yet this interest is more than just a passing curiosity.
When director Sam Mendes called Wilson-Cairns with the idea for 1917—a First World War film that he already knew would be filmed to appear as a single, uninterrupted shot—her next stop was obvious: the personal storage space filled with World War I history books and journals that she’d been meaning to dive back into for years. And after that the Imperial War Museum in London. All of it would come to inform the brief but harrowing...

Production designer Dennis Gassner first became aware of “1917” when he received an unexpected email from director Sam Mendes after a roadtrip to Alaska: “Do not do the Bond film. I have a film — very ambitious — sending script.” When the script by Mendes and Krysty Wilson-Caims arrived by email, he read it quickly on his cell phone, and was instantly intrigued about the World War I adventure.
So Gassner turned down “Bond 25” and threw himself into Mendes’ passion project, based on a fragment told to him by his grandfather, Alfred Mendes, about two young British soldiers — Schofield (George MacKay) and Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman) — sent on a seemingly impossible mission to deliver a letter past No Man’s Land to prevent a battalion of 1,600 men from being ambushed by the Germans. The trick: Mendes wanted to shoot it as one continuous take with their creative partner in crime: legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins.
