Rowan Atkinson in Johnny English (2003)

Goofs

Johnny English

Edit

Continuity

In the graveyard scene, when Johnny asks the grieving granny 'do you get paid extra for that?' and in the next cut, he has moved about 4 or 5 feet away from her instantly (possibly a deleted scene)
After English and Bough exchange fire with Klein and Vendetta after the dark tunnel sequence and the thugs throw a smoke grenade to blind the agents, Klein gets into the hearse and drives away, but Vendetta isn't seen getting into the hearse nor he is seen inside through the window after Klein gets in but when the car chase sequence begins both thugs are in the hearse, with Klein driving it.
During the car chase, the bad guys look behind them and say "Those idiots are right behind us...faster!" and the car behind them is red. But then when the hearse speeds up, it's silver, and when the hearse turns at the corner, it's blue.
When Johnny English and Bough are attacked by Vendetta in the underground car park, he runs for cover behind a concrete pillar after he fired the first round of shots. In this pillar we see the hole created by the impact of a bullet before Bough has started to return fire towards him.
When Bough and English are in the cemetery, Bough takes the gun away from English and holds it in his hand while he escorts him out of the cemetery. In the next shot, the gun is no longer in Bough's hand and is nowhere to be found.

Factual errors

After Johnny English has accidentally landed in the hospital, a sign behind him points towards "Orthopedics". UK hospitals use the British spelling of "Orthopaedics".
During the radio broadcast before Sauvage's coronation, the broadcaster announces that he will be the first French king of Great Britain since 1066. The last French king of England was, in fact King Henry VI. Dual monarchy of England and France under the same King ended in 1453, almost 400 years after 1066.
Sauvage describes, in his evil plan to take over the British Crown and turn "England" into a prison, how it has 210,000 miles of real estate. In fact, the whole of the United Kingdom is only 93,628 square miles.
When Sauvage is briefing his friends about his plan for turning Great Britain into a prison, he is using a projector to display his presentation, but it would have displayed onto the curtain as it was lifting up
The powers of the British Crown are depicted inaccurately. It's a comedy, not a documentary.

Revealing mistakes

During the car chase, the hearse skids round a corner in a narrow street. Tire marks can be seen on the road where it has already made the same maneuver on previous takes.
When Johnny English is being lowered from the car transporter in the chase scene, an oncoming Fiat pushes underneath the Aston Martin causing all four wheels to rotate. This would only be possible if the car was in neutral gear, but it is not as when he selects reverse to back off the trailer he moves the gear selector backwards from park to reverse. Hence only the front two wheels would rotate as being a rear wheel drive in park gear, the gearbox and rear wheels would be locked and have no free rotation.
In the chase scene, the Aston Martin lands on a trailer. When Johnny wants to get off the trailer he has to drive backwards off the trailer, thus putting the car in reverse. After starting the engine of the Aston, the next shot shows the Aston backing out from the trailer, but the car's reversing lights are not lit.
When Lorna speaks, there are occasions where Natalie Imbruglia appears to slip into her native Australian accent.
The tattoo bearing the words "JESUS IS COMING, LOOK BUSY" on the buttocks of the fake archbishop of Canterbury is clearly not real: the letter N in COMING is blurred because of the man's sweat.

Audio/visual unsynchronised

When Johnny English was swinging on the rope with the royal crown during the ceremony, you hear him say, "Never in a million years." But you take a closer look at his mouth, he doesn't actually say it.

Crew or equipment visible

During the hearse chase, a camera and cameraman is visible in the car door of the hearse when the hearse goes round a corner. The camera man is crouching on the pavement.
At the end when the car is parking on the overlook in the south of france a crewmember is reflected on the passenger side of the car as it is pulling up.

Errors in geography

There is absolutely no geographical consistency to the hearse chase, with consecutive shots frequently depicting the vehicles in completely different areas of London.
When the crown jewels are returned to the police station. The Police station has a sign saying "City of London Police", on the news report it says "The crown jewels were returned to a police station in north London". However the 'City of London' police only patrol within 'the square mile' in the centre of Greater London. North London would refer to northern Greater London, which is covered by the Metropolitan Police. Even if the City of London police station was in the north of the square mile, no-one would refer to it as north London as it's such a small area.
In the aerial establishing shot of London, before Sauvage's coronation, we see the sun reflecting off the River Thames coming from the West indicating it is evening, but the radio voice over says "Good Morning".
Sauvage refers to "England" constantly while maps depicting his evil plan. However, the maps depict the whole of the United Kingdom. When he describes making "England" a prison, the graphic displays the prisoner icons (and a coastal wall) not filling up England, nor even the UK, but only the island of Great Britain.

Plot holes

Why are Klein and Vendetta still in the garage next to the Tower of London the following morning? It would seem prudent to make a very quick getaway indeed after stealing the Crown Jewels.

Character error

When Pascal is telling the criminal bosses his plan he says that he will make England into a prison, he should have said Great Britain as the DVD he was showing was putting prisoners all over Great Britain, not just in England.
In the sushi bar, Lorna feeds Johnny a thin, small gray fish and calls it "sea urchin." Actual sea urchin looks like a slightly squat dark ball covered with spines. What is served as sea urchin at sushi bars is the roe of the animal, which has the appearance of a grainy, yellow-orange mass. It is typically presented on top of a small ball of sushi rice, and the whole thing encircled by a strip of dried seaweed.
