Joe Carnahan’s Narc opens in a frenzy, as a narcotics detective, Nick Tellis (Jason Patric), chases a drug dealer through the streets of Detroit on foot. There are echoes here of the foot chase that unspools midway through Kathyrn Bigelow’s Point Break, with these men bashing forth in and out of houses, over fences, through playgrounds, their collision with endless variables driving up anxiety. Narc’s images aren’t as polished as that film’s, partially by necessity, partially by design, as Tellis’s improvisations to get his perp mirror those of Carnahan, who’s fashioning a high-voltage set piece on the fly, an upstart filmmaker balling on a budget. It’s a hell of an opening, establishing Narc’s tortured atmosphere and fractured aesthetic, with shaky, chilly images cut and reassembled (by editor John Gilroy) into shards that suggest policework to be a roaring inferno.

When we last talked, Ray Liotta was thinking a lot about mortality. “I’m at the age now there are some things you just forget,” he mused. “60 was a motherf*cker for me.” He was 64 at the time, soon to turn 65, but somehow his face, which once seemed older and wiser than its time, now seemed timeless. “Some people age better, and with some it’s like, ‘Whoa, what happened there!?’” he laughed.
“You’re like me,” he told me. “We look younger. You’ve got a babyface and you’re not lined. I have really oily skin. In high school it sucked because I had zits, so I have a whole complex about that to this day.”
He laughed with that twinkle in his eye that propelled his iconic turns in Something Wild, Goodfellas, Field of Dreams, not to mention Cop Land, Narc, Smokin’ Aces and Hannibal. He did plenty of forgettable films too,...

As Til Death Do Us Part opens The Best Man sits in a pew working on his speech as upbeat music plays in the background. That’s followed by similar glimpses of other wedding party members prepping for the ceremony. A flashback to The Bride and Groom, nobody in this film has a name, on vacation serves to reinforce the happy image.
But Til Death Do Us Part isn’t a Hallmark Channel rom-com or Lifetime Channel thriller. Because when The Bride gets cold feet and bails on the wedding, we find out everyone involved in the ceremony is a highly skilled assassin. Now the stood-up Groom wants more than just his ring back, and their employer doesn’t take resignations well.

Max’s first full month without ‘HBO’ in its rebranded title has a selection that kicks off summer 2023 in fine fashion. Three of the four iterations of “A Star Is Born,” including the most recent remake starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, are streaming on Max in June. The 1954 and 1976 films land June 1, while the 2018 version arrives June 8.
To prepare for Margot Robbie’s performance in “Barbie” come July, one could watch one of her more intense roles as Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya” (2017). For some lighter summer watches, viewers might consider “Dolphin Tale” (2010), “Grease” (1978), “Hairspray” (2007) or “Tooth Fairy” (2010).
“Magic Mike’s Last Dance” (2023) starring Channing Tatum and Salma Hayek Pinault lands at Max after its theatrical release in February this year. Another major theatrical release from 2022, “Avatar: The Way of Water” (2022), swims onto the streamer starting June 7.

HBO Max is no more. In its place are…HBO and Max. Warner Bros. Discovery’s big change to its premier streaming service was simply to take the “HBO” off of the name “HBO Max,” leaving just “Max.” But in announcing its list of new releases for Max in June 2023, Warner is highlighting all of the HBO content anyway. So here is everything you can expect to find on Max (including every new HBO show) this month.
Even though June 2023 is the first full month of Max’s existence without the helpful “HBO” modifier in front of it, literally all of its major original offerings are thanks to the pay cable network. June 4 sees the premiere of The Idol, the controversial TV project starring The Weeknd and written by Euphoria‘s Sam Levinson. After that, season 3 of Danny McBride evangelical comedy The Righteous Gemstones premieres on June 18. That will be...

Nearly one year after Ray Liotta’s unexpected death in the Dominican Republic, his cause of death has been released.
According to documents obtained by TMZ, the 67-year-old actor died from heart and respiratory issues. Specific causes of death list pulmonary edema — fluid in the lungs, respiratory insufficiency and acute heart failure. The report also noted atherosclerosis, a buildup of fats, cholesterol and other substances in and on the artery walls, as an underlying issue.
Liotta, best known for “Goodfellas,” “Cop Land” and “Narc,” died in his sleep last May in the Dominican Republic while shooting “Dangerous Waters”. The actor had recently starred as twin brothers in the “Sopranos” prequel “The Many Saints of Newark” while appearing in Steven Soderbergh’s “No Sudden Move.” He had recently appeared in Elizabeth Banks’ “Cocaine Bear,” which debuted this past February and earned decent reviews and $89.2 million worldwide.

We're still reeling days after the loss of Hollywood legend Ray Liotta, the man who gave us a bevy of incredible performances across just about every genre. While known by most as Henry Hill in the Martin Scorsese masterpiece "Goodfellas," Liotta has truly done it all. He's played threatening gangsters, hilarious con men, and even had two different appearances in "Muppets" movies.
There's something indefinably remarkable about Ray Liotta, who could deliver a performance in a film like "Narc" with the same intensity and dedication as "Wild Hogs." Liotta never half-assed it, and whether he was playing a certifiable criminal badass or the goofiest dad in...

Ray Liotta knows how to make a lasting impression. In a touching tribute, Narc director Joe Carnahan tells Rolling Stone about one of his fondest memories of Liotta, who died suddenly in his sleep at the age of 67.

Ray Liotta, who starred in the Martin Scorsese mob classic Goodfellas, in addition to roles in Cop Land and Field of Dreams, has died at the age of 67.
A cause of death was not immediately available, but a rep for the actor confirmed to Rolling Stone that Liotta died in his sleep while on location in the Dominican Republic, where he was reportedly shooting the film Dangerous Waters.
Over a career that spanned 40 years, Liotta specialized in portraying tough-talking, no-nonsense characters often embroiled in the criminal underworld, or lighthearted variations of that character in comedies.

Ray Liotta, the intense actor from New Jersey best known for his turn as the hustler turned mob rat Henry Hill in Martin Scorsese’s GoodFellas, has died. He was 67.

Veteran Hollywood multi-hyphenate George Gallo is attached to direct “Gambino,” a high-end biopic about organized crime boss Carlo Gambino that Gallo is co-writing with two-time Oscar winner Nick Vallelonga (“Green Book”).
The ambitious project, announced in Cannes, is being lead produced by Julius R. Nasso, also a Hollywood veteran, best known for his production partnership with Steven Seagal that went sour. Nasso has acquired rights to the novel “Gambino: The Rise” by Pierre James which delves into the U.S. story of Cosa Nostra starting from its roots in Italy and the role played by Carlo Gambino, who was its boss from 1957 until his death in 1976 of natural causes in his Massapequa, Long Island, home.

The new year is continuing apace at Hulu. The streamer’s list of new releases for February 2022 is highlighted by one very interesting project.
Pam and Tommy is set to premiere on Feb. 2. Perhaps the Groundhog Day release date is intentional as the show will cover a particular moment of celebrity, sex, and exploitation from the early ’90s that seems to have repeated itself over and over. Sebastian Stan and Lily James star as Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson and the series follows the events and fallout of their homemade sex tape being stolen and unleashed on a nascent internet. If nothing else, getting the promo photos of Stan and James as the ’90s stars was worth it.

Joe Carnahan made a name for himself with the brutal, intense cop drama "Narc." He followed that film up with "Smokin' Aces," a star-studded, rather messy shoot 'em up that was oozing with style, and far removed from the more serious tone of "Narc." Since then, Carnahan has occasionally dipped back into seriousness with entries like the criminally underrated "The Grey." But it's clear his heart belongs to pulpy trash where everyone is an ass, and everyone's got a gun. And there's certainly nothing wrong with that. When I say "trash," I say so lovingly. There's something refreshing about a trashy...

Tearing through the Nevada desert in a bullet-ridden Crown Vic, wily con artist Teddy Murretto (Frank Grillo) hatches a desperate plan to hide out from lethal hitman Bob Viddick (Gerard Butler): He sucker-punches rookie officer Valerie Young (Alexis Louder) to get himself arrested and locked up in a small-town police station. Jail can’t protect Murretto for long, and Viddick schemes his own way into detention, biding his time in a nearby cell until he can complete his mission. When the arrival of a competing assassin (Toby Huss) ignites all-out mayhem, mounting threats force Viddick to get creative if he wants to finish the job and escape the explosive situation.

The new action sci-fi thriller Boss Level begins with former Special Forces agent Roy Pulver (Frank Grillo) and an unnamed woman waking up in Pulver’s bed, fully clothed, after what looks like a rough night. But things get rougher very quickly, as an assassin enters Pulver’s apartment and attempts to kill him. Pulver defeats him but ends up dying anyway–only to wake up the next morning and do the whole thing again, perhaps living a little longer and getting killed by someone else, but still dying.
In a running voiceover, Pulver casually informs us that this is the 140th time he’s done this. And he still can’t figure out why or how it’s happening, or how to break out of the time loop he’s stuck in. All he knows is that he will wake up again on the very same morning and despite...

Ray Liotta has signed on the upcoming Apple drama series “In With the Devil,” Variety has confirmed.
Liotta joins previously announced series leads Taron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauser.
The six-episode series would be based on the 2010 novel “In With The Devil: A Fallen Hero, A Serial Killer, and A Dangerous Bargain for Redemption” by James Keene and Hillel Levin. The book tells the story of Keene’s real life when he was sentenced to prison but offered his freedom in exchange for coaxing a confession out of a fellow inmate, a suspected serial killer.
The series is described as being told through the lens of an intimate relationship between two prisoners, exploring the lengths that people will go to in order to seek redemption, if true absolution is ever really possible, and if so, at what costs. Egerton will star as Keene, with Hauser playing the serial killer. Liotta...

As acts of police violence have played out across social media and the nightly news, audiences have begun to rethink their relationship with cop movies. On Monday, critic Kathryn VanArendonk dug into the ironclad relationship television companies have formed with pro-police narratives. And on Thursday, Washington Post writer Alyssa Rosenberg made an impassioned please to put an end to cop narratives altogether. “There are always gaps between reality and fiction,” the latter wrote, “but given what policing in America has too often become, Hollywood’s version of it looks less like fantasy and more like complicity.”
In this period of reevaluation for cop films and television shows, it is good to revisit old favorites with new eyes.

Hollywood is always looking to remake popular foreign films. Hell, HBO is already developing an American version of Parasite and eyeing Mark Ruffalo to star. Another international property that’s ripe for an American reboot though is The Raid. Sure, you could argue that Dredd is basically the same thing, but I digress.
Released in 2011, The Raid is an Indonesian film that follows a police squad making their way up an apartment building to arrest a local crime lord. But as they rise up each floor, they encounter countless bad guys.
Director Joe Carnahan’s been developing an American remake with Frank Grillo set to star for some time now. And during a Q & A with Collider for their new film, Boss Level, Carnahan said that they’re no longer attached to the project under the title The Raid, but that they’re taking that script and developing it elsewhere.

Mel Gibson and Frank Grillo will star in Boss Level, a new time-loop thriller from the director of The Grey.
Last month, Blumhouse and Universal’s Happy Death Day successfully retrofitted the ever-growing subgenre of Groundhog Day-adjacent films to the slasher movie form. So it only stands to reason that there must be other types of time-loop thrillers we can see, right? And now here’s one that has war themes and Mel Gibson and Frank Grillo to boot.
Indeed, as revealed via Deadline, Gibson and Grillo are teaming with director Joe Carnahan for Boss Level, a new action-thriller about military veterans with a time-bending premise. In a project also based on a script by Carnahan, Boss Level follows Grillo as a retired special forces operative who finds himself trapped in a never-ending loop that constantly results in his death. (Aton) The trailer for the ‘Death Wish‘ remake has finally landed. The Eli Roth-directed vehicle stars Bruce Willis as Dr. Paul Kersey, a Chicago surgeon who goes out for revenge when his wife, (Elizabeth Shue) and daughter (Camila Morrone) are attacked in a vicious home invasion.
The original ‘Death Wish‘, which stared Charles Bronson and spawned four sequels, is considered to be a classic among revenge flicks, if not cult status at the least. The remake was written by Joe Carnahan, and will mark Roth’s first venture into the action/revenge genre. Carnahan was originally set to direct, but after creative differences Roth stepped in to helm the picture.
The film also stars Vincent D’Onofrio, Jack Kesy, Dean Norris, and Mike Epps. Here’s the first full trailer.
Here’s the official synopsis for the remake:

Bruce Willis shoots people first and asks questions later in this first trailer for the remake of Death Wish. He goes on a killing spree of revenge after his wife is murdered. Death Wish is more of an action-thriller, an action-thriller that involves lots of killing. So, it seems like something Roth would enjoy making.
I'm not the biggest fan of Roth, but I enjoy watching Bruce Willis movies and the screenplay was written ben Joe Carnahan (Smokin' Aces, The A-Team, The Grey). Those are the two main reasons that I'll end up watching this movie. Judging by the trailer, the movie looks like it could be fun an entertaining, but it...

After reveling in the horror genre for virtually all of his directorial career, Eli Roth is switching gears slightly with his next project as he heads into action-thriller territory with a remake of 1974’s Death Wish. Scripted by Joe Carnahan and starring Bruce Willis, the first trailer has now arrived ahead of a November release.
“We wanted to bring back that great, classic Bruce Willis we all know and love and just do a fun, badass update of a revered classic,” Roth told Yahoo! Movies. “I wanted to bring Bruce back to that Fifth Element, Unbreakable, Die Hard glory and have him craft another iconic performance, and I really think he did it. I mean I really think this can be his Taken. The fun is watching him go crazy and watching someone slowly move the moral goal post.”

Witness the rise of the man who changed America. Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther) is Thurgood Marshall.
Also starring Josh Gad, Kate Hudson, Dan Stevens, Sterling K. Brown and James Cromwell, watch the exciting trailer now.
Such an dynamic trailer – with a fall season release date, expect to see awards buzz for such a powerful film. Acting, directing, writing, producing categories, including the technical categories for cinematography, costumes, hair and makeup, and production design, with score and song to round out the possible nominations.
Long before he sat on the United States Supreme Court or claimed victory in Brown v. Board of Education, Thurgood Marshall (Chadwick Boseman) was a young rabble-rousing attorney for the NAACP. The new motion picture, Marshall, is the true story of his greatest challenge in those early days – a fight he fought alongside attorney Sam Friedman (Josh Gad), a young lawyer with no experience in criminal law: the case of black chauffeur Joseph Spell (Sterling K. Brown), accused by his white employer, Eleanor Strubing (Kate Hudson), of sexual assault and attempted murder.
The film has a top notch production team.
Directed by Reginald Hudlin, Marshall is produced by Paula Wagner, Jonathan Sanger ( The Elephant Man, Vanilla Sky, Flight Of The Navigator), and Reginald Hudlin. It is written by Jake Koskoff and Michael Koskoff.
Hudlin co-produced the 88th Academy Awards ceremony in 2016 and was one of the producers of Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, for which he received an Oscar nomination for Best Picture for the film.
Paula Wagner launched Cruise/Wagner Productions (C/W) with her former CAA client Tom Cruise. C/W went on to produce such critically acclaimed films as The Others, The Last Samurai, Vanilla Sky, Without Limits, Shattered Glass, Narc, Elizabethtown, and Ask the Dust, as well as Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds (which Wagner executive produced). C/W was responsible for the original Mission: Impossible film trilogy (Mission: Impossible 2 and Mission: Impossible III).
Open Road Films will release Marshall on October 13, 2017. Mark it on your calendar now.

Spider-Man: Homecoming hasn’t even hit the cinemas yet, but Sony seem to have a lot of faith in young star Tom Holland that they are willing to thrust him to the fore of another big franchise, this time as the lead in the big screen adaption of the best selling Playstation vide game series, Uncharted, according to Deadline. This particular project has been doing the rounds in Hollywood for years with David O. Russell (Three Kings, Joy) and Joe Carnahan (Narc, The A-Team), amongst many others, attached at one point. In fact, Carnahan had written the most recent draft of the script for director Shawn Levy (Stranger Things, Real Steel), envisioning it as an R-Rated adventure flick. While Levy is still on board, this most recent draft is being rewritten to de-age the hero, roguish Indiana Jones-alike Nathan Drake, presenting an origin story as he grows into his role as a famed treasure hunter.

The saga of Bad Boys 3, tentatively titled Bad Boys For Life, has been along one, with fans of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s wise cracking, property destroying cops Mike Lowery and Marcus Bennett waiting over a decade for another installment. We were always told it was coming, and it finally seemed to be set in stone when Joe Carnahan (Narc, Smoking’ Aces, The A-Team, The Grey) signed onto director, with production slated to begin this Autumn for a November 8th 2017 release date. Now, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Carnahan has left the project due to either scheduling conflicts (which makes sense since he is writing the big screen adaption of video game Uncharted, Fox’s upcoming X-Force, and writing and directing The Raid remake) or, that old chestnut, ‘creative differences’. This once again puts the status of the project up in the air, and I personally feel...

News broke last week that the planned Hollywood remake of Gareth Evans’ stunning action movie The Raid had a new director. Joe Carnahan (Narc, Smokin’ Aces, The Grey) is taking the job on, and he’s being chatting to Collider about why he’s taking the film on, and how it’ll differ from the original. Gareth Evan’s 2011 Indonesian martial arts spectacle The Raid (and it’s sequel 3 years later) became an instant classic the moment of its release, the hard hitting action and fight scenes unlike anything audiences have seen before or since. Of course, it being such a hit soon saw Hollywood come calling. An english language remake was soon put into development, with The Expendables 3 director Patrick Hughes being tasked by Screen Gems to helm the project, which had attracted star Frank Grillo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Purge: Anarchy) and was courting Taylor Kitsch. But problems soon arose filling out the ensemble cast, and almost everyone involved left the project, effectively cancelling it. But now, the project has risen from the dead, with Xyz Films now financing it, and Grillo and director Joe Carnahan (Narc, The A-Team, Smokin’ Aces, The Grey) on board. The remake (which is being called...
