Netflix is back with a new star-studded action movie — this time led by Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry — with “The Union.” Wahlberg stars as Mike, a Jersey construction worker who finds his average life turned upside down when his high school sweetheart Roxanne (Berry) shows up and he gets tangled up in a continent-skipping international intelligence adventure.
But Berry and Wahlberg aren’t the only familiar faces in the Netflix romp. Here’s a handy guide to “The Union” cast and the characters they play.
Halle Berry in “The Union” (Laura Radford/Netflix)
Halle Berry as Roxanne Hall — Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry stars as The Union operative Roxanne Hall, an ass-kicking, world-traveling adventurer who never misses her shot. The animated X-Men are about to make their return to TV in "X-Men '97." This Disney+ series is basically a thirty-year-late sixth season of 1992's "X-Men," the first cartoon about the Marvel Comics superhero team.
The "X-Men" comics kept chugging along through highs and lows while their animated counterparts were in limbo, though. At SXSW 2024, Marvel previewed the comics' future. A relaunch is coming to "X-Men" in Summer 2024 under the banner "From The Ashes," the follow-up to the ongoing "Fall of X." There'll be three primary series at first:
"X-Men" by Jed MacKay and Ryan Stegman. Cyclops and Magneto will lead a traditional X-Men superhero team based in Alaska.
"Uncanny X-Men" by Gail Simone and David Marquez. "Outlaw" lovebirds Gambit and Rogue head to New Orleans with Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Jubilee in tow.

“Love & Death” is set to premiere Thursday on HBO Max (soon to be just “Max”) and is expected to be a strong Emmys player for the cable and streaming platform in the limited series races. Elizabeth Olsen’s turn as the unfiltered adulterous Candy Montgomery, along with Jesse Plemons’ performance as the dim-witted and simple churchgoing husband of her friend Betty Gore, are expected to be among the top prospects in the acting races, but not where pundits had initially speculated.
Variety has learned exclusively that Plemons will be submitted for supporting actor in a limited series and not the lead actor race category, which was assumed early on. So, unsurprisingly, Olsen will be the sole leading acting submission for the series.

Warner Bros. Discovery will not release “Batgirl,” either theatrically or on HBO Max, TheWrap has learned. The 90 million project is effectively dead.
“The decision to not release Batgirl reflects our leadership’s strategic shift as it relates to the DC universe and HBO Max. Leslie Grace is an incredibly talented actor and this decision is not a reflection of her performance. We are incredibly grateful to the filmmakers of Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt and their respective casts and we hope to collaborate with everyone again in the near future,” according to Warner Bros. Picture Spokesperson.
Made under a previous regime, “Batgirl” was initially designed to be an HBO Max release, and then was being considered for theatrical distribution. Due to Covid issues and shutdowns, the budget ballooned to 90 million.
The movie stars “In the Heights” breakout star Leslie Grace in the title role of Barbara Gordon.

Stars: Lowri Watts-Joyce, Rula Lenska, Noel Brendan Mcalley, Jeffrey Charles Richards | Written and Directed by Richard John Taylor
The Huntress of Auschwitz begins with a young woman identified only as The Huntress (Lowri Watts-Joyce) meeting with Amelia Kaminska (Rula Lenska) and saying that she’s found “Him” before producing an old photo of a man in a World War 2 German uniform. Then we get a long montage accompanied by a hideous acoustic song of her flying from Los Angeles to London.
That’s when the alarms started going off in my head. Writer/director Richard John Taylor put an almost identical sequence in his film The Haunting of Pendle Hill which also starred Lowri Watts-Joyce. Recycling footage from that talkfest was not a good sign.
She takes a room at a less than welcoming inn where she meets John (Noel Brendan Mcalley) who asks her why she’s come to this remote in.

“In the Heights” breakout star Leslie Grace who will star as “Batgirl” in the upcoming film at HBO Max recently opened up on the significance of being an Afro-Latina Superhero.
“It’s such a thing, we haven’t seen a lot of Latino superheroes, or actors of Latin descent within the superhero world,” Grace told E! News in an interview. “So it was such a beautiful opportunity to be granted and a big responsibility as well.”
Grace, who is Dominican-American, is now the third Latina to be cast in a DC superhero project, following Sasha Calle’s role as Supergirl in “The Flash” and Rachel Zegler joining the cast of “Shazam: Fury of the Gods.”
Offering up some insight into what fans can expect about her version of Barbara Gordon, Grace said, “I will say one of my favorite things about our script and the heart of our movie is...

Tom King and Clay Mann’s Batman/Catwoman kicked off its complex thread of mysteries earlier this month. In the present, the Bat and the Cat set out to search for Andrea Beaumont’s missing son, while an older Selina Kyle pays a friend a visit in the future, with the first issue concluding with the return of killer vigilante the Phantasm.
It’s hard to say just where these threads are going after just one issue, but we do know that at least one new character from Bruce and Selina’s future and DC Comics’ past is set to play a major role in this story. As revealed by King and Mann on Twitter, Helena Wayne, the daughter first teased in King and Lee Weeks’ amazing Batman Annual #2 (2017), will don the cape and cowl in the maxi-series.

James Gunn has been hired by Warner Bros and DC to write with an eye to direct the next installment of the Suicide Squad franchise. It’s the first job he’s taken since he parted ways with Disney, which let him go from the lucrative Guardians of the Galaxy franchise in July in the wake of old controversial tweets that had been compiled by alt-right journalists and sent to Disney.
Warner Bros had director Gavin O’Connor attached to that film, but he is now engaged in directing Ben Affleck in the Brad Ingelsby-scripted drama Torrance, which is also at the studio. The studio has been in talks with Gunn to step in and develop this film, and the deal was made after he was settled out of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 by Disney.

Screenwriter Christina Hodson has been hired to write “Batgirl” for Warners and DC Films, multiple insiders tell TheWrap.
As TheWrap first reported, Hodson wrote the Harley Quinn “Birds of Prey” spinoff for Warner Bros. and DC Films. An Insider also tells the TheWrap that the studio is high on Hodson’s “Bird of Prey” script and is currently out to directors.
Joss Whedon stepped down as director of “Batgirl” in February, saying in a statement at the time, “Batgirl is such an exciting project, and Warners/DC such collaborative and supportive partners, that it took me months to realize I really didn’t have a story. I’m grateful to Geoff and Toby and everyone who was so welcoming when I arrived, and so understanding when I… uh, is there a sexier word for ‘failed’?”

Batgirl made her debut in the Batman mythos 50 years ago as Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Gotham City Police Commissioner Jim Gordon. Since then she has become one of the most popular superheroines in the world. When Barbara Gordon was paralyzed by a gunshot from the Joker in the classic graphic novel “The Killing Joke,” other crimefighters, like The Huntress and Orphan, took up the Batgirl name while Barbara became Oracle, a tech-savvy aide to Batman. Barbara later returned to the Batgirl role, while her assault in “The Killing Joke” was retconned.
Hodson is a hot commodity, as the screenwriter has made the Black List with scripts three times since turning to writing four years ago. One of those — her female-centered sci-fi action spec script “The Eden Project” — sold to Sony and Material Pictures.
Hodson has also written a reboot of “The Fugitive” for Warner Bros. and producer Arnold Kopelson, and wrote “Bumblebee,” the first spinoff of Paramount’s billion-dollar “Transformers” franchise, based on the popular Autobot in the series.

DC die-hards may remember that “Birds of Prey” was also a short-lived series on The WB network in 2002-3, featuring Mia Sara as Harley.

"Arrow" fans are gearing up for the debut of Count Vertigo on the January 30 episode of the series, but some may be wondering: just who is Count Vertigo anyway?
While the show's incarnation of the character promises to be very different from his comic book roots, we still thought it might be instructive to take a look back at the original conception of the character, to learn just why the folks behind the show saw him as a worthy adversary to bring into the Arrowverse.
Count Vertigo made his debut in 1978's "World's Finest Comics" #251, in a story by writer Gerry Conway and artist Trevor Von Eeden. In it, Vertigo attempts a series of jewel heists, only to be thwarted by the costumed adventurer known as the Black Canary, when she discovers his secret; he is the heir to the royal family of the small European nation of Vlatava, who...

As we reported last week, a rumor is currently circulating that 2015's "Justice League" movie will be based on a 3-issue arc of "Justice League of America" circa 1980, featuring the villain Darkseid.
While that rumor hasn't been confirmed by any official sources, and likely would not be for some time, it may prove to be instructive to take a closer look at those three issues, and examine which elements could potentially work their way into the "Justice League" film.
Written by Gerry Conway, who had taken up the reins of the Fourth World characters including Darkseid in a relaunched "New Gods" series after the original Jack Kirby run ended, "Justice League of America" #183-185 was that year's installment of an annual tradition for the team, where they would regularly team up with their counterparts from the alternate dimensional world known as Earth-2.
