One of the very best

This is a work of genius. Moliere is notoriously hard to translate into English, but for some reason works superbly in Scots dialect. Donald MacWhinnie is a very experienced director, and although the film is somewhat stage-bound he manages to make light of the limitations. But the central performance, from Rikki Fulton, is quite simply superb. It is one of the definitive performances of Moliere's comedy in (sort of) English. Generations of school children and students have had to take it on trust that Moliere is funny, but this brilliant adaptation, a superb translation and adaptation, leaves no room for doubt. A work combining the best of two comic masters, actor and writer, and a really, really good translator.
