2003. It’s an era of action movies where we’re living in a post-Matrix, post-Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon world. Those films’ major success and notoriety prompted Hollywood to try bringing Kung Fu wire work to more of their action films. Meanwhile, two of the biggest names in the genre – Jackie Chan and Jet Li – were attempting to expand their brand into the American market — with films that many of their fans considered to be watered-down versions of their previous works. Around the same time, Doug Liman debuted a newer visceral style of action in his film, The Bourne Identity, which would make its own mark on action films to come. However, somewhat hidden in all that activity was a budding star in Thailand who had taken his amazing physical skills and called back to some of the classic, acrobatic action that defined Hong Kong’s most beloved period of martial arts movies.

The new action film Lights Out has stepped into the ring for viewers to enjoy. Frank Grillo stars as a mysterious wanderer who is haunted by a past of seeing his comrades die in combat and now finds himself thrust into the underground world of mixed-martial arts fighting. Mekhi Phifer also stars as Grillo’s only ally with Durmot Mulroney as a crime boss and Scott Adkins making a special appearance as Grillo’s former brother-in-arms.
The movie also stars Jaime King as Ridgeway, who is a police detective who is seemingly pulling all the strings behind it all, but is there more that she’s hiding? King had starred opposite Johnny Depp in Ted Demme’s film Blow, followed by Michael Bay’s Pearl Harbor starring opposite Ben Affleck. You may recognize her as Goldie in Robert Rodriguez’s Sin City and the sequel, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.

It’s a fairly big month on Prime Video in March, at least compared to the other streaming service offerings! There are are two major films arriving on Amazon’s streamer. The first is a remake of the Patrick Swayze action classic Road House. Stepping into the late Swayze’s shoes? A crazy-jacked Jake Gyllenhaal, who really seemed to want to go the extra mile for this project.
The other big film coming to Prime Video is Ricky Stanicky, and the plot sounds really fun! It follows three friends who have always blamed their mistakes on an imaginary guy called Ricky Stanicky. When they have to finally introduce people to Stanicky, they decide to hire a washed-up actor (John Cena) to impersonate him. Hilarity ensues, maybe? But if neither of those make your watchlist, there’s also the return of the animated hit series Invincible.

Summer isn’t over yet but HBO and its streaming arm Max are already moving on to fall. With its list of new releases for August 2023, Max is focusing on football! The American kind, mind you, not the actually footy kind.
August 2023 sees the release of two major football documentaries on HBO and Max. The first is the premiere of Hard Knocks on Aug. 10. The new season of long-running NFL training camp docuseries will center on the New York Jets, new employers of legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On Aug. 23, Max will air the aptly named Bs High. The doc tells the stranger-than-fiction story of high school football team Bishop Sycamore, which pulled off one of the more notable sports scams you’re likely to ever hear about.
Not of the football variety but in keeping with the North American sports theme will be season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on Aug.

The "John Wick" movies have gone from cult favorites to legitimate blockbusters over the past decade, bolstered by a thrilling form of action design practiced by Keanu Reeves. The term gun-fu is often used to describe the fight scenes in the John Wick saga, but the style itself didn't start with Baba Yaga.
Legendary Hong Kong filmmaker John Woo pioneered gun-fu in the '80s by taking movie gun fights from sequences of static shots to highly-choreographed, kinetic experiences. Perhaps the best example came with 1992's "Hard Boiled," which contains an epic three-minute-long gunfight that, for many, represents the apex of the director's unique style.
Gun-fu would predictably make its way to Hollywood in the ensuing years, and started showing up in movies like "Bulletproof Monk," "Kick-Ass," "Equilibrium," and "The Matrix." This westernized form of the style would add an element of accuracy and precision that imbued the frenzied shots...

Leeding Media, a company which straddles the U.S. and Chinese film industries, has set up a development deal with prominent Hollywood independent producer Revolution Studios. The agreement follows renewal of most of Leeding’s portfolio of movie rights for China.

We are looking at possible TV adaptations, remakes and Broadway shows,” Leeding Media CEO and founder David U. Netflix is getting into the zombie apocalypse TV genre with Black Summer, a more serious offering from the makers of Z Nation.
Black Summer is coming to Netflix, offering a more dramatic and intense take on the zombie apocalypse genre; an idea seemingly contradictory to series production company The Asylum, which was responsible for Syfy’s schlocky serial take on the genre, Z Nation, which was recently canceled after five seasons. Yet, with the genre still spear-headed by AMC’s ratings-declining (but still potent) The Walking Dead, the onus on this new series will be to prove that zombies aren’t passé.
Indeed, Black Summer is the creation of Z Nation co-creator/executive producer Karl Schaefer and the Syfy show's co-executive producer, John Hyams, with both serving as showrunners and writers. The project was given a straight-to-series order for eight episodes back in July 2018.

The producers of a new series about Napoleon Bonaparte to be helmed by Agnieszka Holland will pitch the project to potential partners in Berlin at the Co-Pro Series event, which is part of the Berlinale Co-Production Market and the Drama Series Days. The Co-Pro event has a strong pedigree, with “Babylon Berlin” and “Valkyrien” among the series pitched at earlier editions.
Holland’s latest film, “Mr. Jones,” is in competition in Berlin. Her TV credits include HBO series “House of Cards” and “Burning Bush.” The “Napoleon” project will focus on the cult of personality that the titular leader engendered, with echoes of modern-day political strong men. “Partners are like family. You need to be able to rely on them.”
Lethal Weapon’s previous episode generated some criticism for how it played into the show’s formula a little too much. However, with the direction that “Panama” takes, it’s now rather clear that this is likely the trajectory for the rest of the year. Learn more about Cole’s past? Check. Put Murtaugh and Trish in some obligatory fight that gets blown out of proportion? Check. A lot of dialogue about the importance of partners and family? Double check. 2000’s Continued It would be three years after the success of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon before Chow Yun Fat would star in another film. Surprisingly he decided to follow that classic up with the comic book movie Bulletproof Monk (2003), which was sadly beneath him at this point in his career. The plotline is overly simplistic, making the film feel as if it was aimed at children. Hong Kong action director Tung Wai was on board to work on the fight scenes, although his work here doesn’t show him at his best with an overuse of wire-work. Director Paul Hunter preferring to use quick cuts instead of showing the skills of the stunt performers doesn’t help the action either. As well as having involvement from...

How I Met Your Mother's Josh Radnor is set to direct the upcoming sci-fi drama, The Leaves...
Josh Radnor, of How I Met Your Mother and Mercy Street fame, will be exploring uncharted (for him) territory as director of Lionsgate/Summit’s sci-fi drama The Leaves, the latest supernatural comic to come alive on the big screen.
This isn’t Radnor’s first time behind the camera (though it is his first paranormal one). His first venture behind the scenes was writing and directing the buzzed-about dramedy Happythankyoumoreplease, followed by Liberal Arts, which he also starred in. Both of his films received serious accolades even though neither was a box office smash.
In an uncharacteristic move, he won’t be making an onscreen appearance this time around. The Leaves is also a departure from his usual comedic material as he enters the world of science fiction.

Apple has shelved its touted Dr. Dre-starring scripted series, Vital Signs, over explicit content.
In the realm of streaming television – dominated by Netflix, Amazon and Hulu – the gizmo monopolists at Apple was the sleeping giant whose awakening would shift the landscape. Indeed, the earliest stages of the awakening occurred in February 2016, when it was first reported that Apple would debut its first scripted series, a dark, raunchy drama starring and produced by rap legend/media mogul, Dr. Dre, titled Vital Signs. However, two-and-a-half years later, Apple has shelved the series, apparently due to a new attitude about its content.
In a move carried out personally by Apple CEO Tim Cook, all six episodes of Vital Signs have been scrapped by the company, reports The Wall Street Journal. In the paper’s exposé, mockingly titled “No Sex Please, We’re Apple,” it was revealed that the company...

We have a list of the new Hulu movies and shows arriving in October 2018.
Happy Huluween!
Hulu is blessed to have a name that sounds roughly enough like "Hallow." That means it's basically honor-bound to bring the heat for Halloween. Thankfully for the October 2018 new releases, Hulu is bringing us the spookies that we need. The Blair Witch Project, The Others, and Child's Play all arrive this month. And if you're looking for some more wholesome creepies, The Nightmare Before Christmas should do. And if that weren't enough, Hulu is debuting its own horror show - anthology series Into the Dark.
For those shamefully unable to get into the Halloween spirit, Hulu is bringing in some other fun film options. Galaxy Quest, Music and Lyrics, and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective should help out with that.
Then of course, are the usual and typically deep TV offerings.

Thanks to films like Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Bulletproof Monk, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, it wouldn't be too big a stretch to call Chow Yun-Fat one of the biggest international stars to ever come out of China. But now his homeland's government is attempting to cripple his career over his political views, putting him on a black list domestically. Shanghaiist reports Chow Yun-Fat has been banned from working on film productions in mainland China by the socialist government there. His crime is being pro-democrat, publically supporting the student protests that have been popping up over the past five weeks. He first spoke out in early October, as reported by THR he told Apple Daily, "I.ve met the residents, the students . they are very brave and it.s touching to see that they.re fighting for what they want. The students are reasonable. If the government...

Following a breakthrough role in American Pie, actor Seann William Scott eventually found a place as the comedic relief in action comedies like Evolution, Bulletproof Monk and The Rundown. But lately, the actor has been pretty low key with voice roles in the Ice Age franchise, smaller profile films like Goon, an episode of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" and, of course, a return as Stifler in American Reunion. Now we have word from THR that Scott is getting back into action in a film called Skiptrace, and this time he'll team up with action veteran Jackie Chan for Paranorman and The Tale of Despereaux director Sam Fell. In addition, Chan and Scott will be joined by Chinese superstar Fan Bingbing in the action adventure set up at Exclusive Media and China's own Talent International Film Col. Director: Jiang Wen. Review: Adam Wing. I’m going to be completely honest here, and be warned, this might upset a few people. The fact of the matter is – I’ve never been a big fan of Chow Yun Fat. Don’t get me wrong, I love Hard Boiled, The Killer and A Better Tomorrow, but my admiration of those films has more to do with John Woo than anything else. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is another favourite of mine, but it wasn’t the Chow that tasted good, Zhang Ziyi and Michelle Yeoh were the reasons I fell in love that year. Anything I’ve seen him in since Crouching Tiger (Shanghai excepted) has been for me, well, a little bit ordinary, and the less said about Bulletproof Monk the better. Chow Yun Fat is back then, in Jiang Wen's Let the Bullets Fly – an ultra-loose spin on the The Good,...

The American Pie boys on growing up and making the third sequel to their smash-hit gross-out comedy
"I don't know that we'll necessarily top the first movie," says Thomas Ian Nicholas, a star of the American Pie teen-film series, which started in 1999 and will next month expand to a fourth instalment, American Pie: Reunion. "But I feel this is the best sequel."
It must be tricky territory for the franchise's five leads; bittersweet. On the one hand, the thirtysomethings clearly delight in one another's company, tirelessly joking and jostling in a London hotel. On the other hand, none would have thought, back when American Pie kickstarted five careers, they'd be 13 years in the same roles: sensitive Jim (Jason Biggs), insensitive Stifler (Seann William Scott), brawny Oz (Chris Klein), brainy Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas) and Nicholas's straight man, Kevin. These names, Thomas says, "will forever be stamped on our foreheads."

It cost $40m to make and took north of $300m at the box office. A sequel to The Karate Kid was clearly a no-brainer, and, following a previous draft by the Kung-Fu Panda team of Cyrus Voris and Ethan Reiff, the job of writing Karate Kid 2 has now fallen to Zak Penn.Absolutely no details about the direction of the follow-up are yet being revealed, although there's been speculation that, in a reversal of the original Ralph Macchio Karate Kid 2, the action might take us from East to West. Columbia pictures are tight-lipped on the subject. Maybe Jaden Smith could actually learn the right martial art this time.Voris and Reiff (who also handed in screenplays for Bulletproof Monk and Nottingham, which eventually became Ridley Scott's Robin Hood) were underway with the script eighteen months ago, but there seems to have been little movement on the project since then.

It’s no secret that Hitler was into the occult. This premise has allowed for many a supernatural story to emerge. The Nazis want everything supernatural. They want the Ark of the Covenant in Raiders of the Lost Ark, the key to demons of another plane in Hellboy, the power of the Witchblade, the Scroll of the Ultimate in Bulletproof Monk, Werewolf Women of the S.S.(nuff said),… the list goes on and now, they seek the secret to immortality!

Not too long ago, we got our grubby little hands on an incomplete, unofficial trailer for the upcoming Chinese martial arts flick “Choy Lee Fut” (aka “Choy Li Fut”), a film that stars Sammy Hung and his father, action veteran Sammo Hung. As cool as it is to see these guys in action, I’ve gotta admit that some of the digital effects look quite shoddy. Then again, who in their right mind watches a martial arts movie for the impressive use of CGI? It’s something I can overlook, but it’s still a little jarring. Remember that poorly-executed sequence at the beginning of “Bulletproof Monk”? Prepare to experience deja vu. All kidding aside, I do think the film has the potential to be fairly kickass, especially since Sammo Hung seems to be fairly involved with the project. Only time will tell if it all comes together like I hope it will.

Hustle departs, Modern Family season 2 starts in the UK, there's Community, The Walking Dead, 30 Rock and Kevin Costner. It's our UK TV look-ahead...!
We wave goodbye to a too short run of a favourite show and welcome back some older programming for a return visit to our TV sets over the next seven days in tellyland.
It feels like it just began, but Hustle series 7 ends tonight, Friday, February 18th at 9:00pm on BBC1. Albert is featured heavily, and worries are pressing weightily on the eldest of the group of cons with hearts. The series finale sees them helping a pal who's rubbed the Mafia the wrong way. We wouldn't rub the Mafia at all, frankly. But the damage has been done and we'll see if the Hustle crew can make repairs. We'll have a review of the finale as soon as possible.

I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for a Chow Yun Fat movie that doesn’t suck. After suffering through “Bulletproof Monk” and “Dragonball Z”, I was beginning to wonder if the guy had given up trying to land a quality project. Wen Jiang’s upcoming period actioner “Let the Bullets Fly” seems like the right production for the veteran action star, particularly since it gives him an excuse to be a hard-nosed badass once again. The embedded trailer looks phenomenal, and I can’t wait for this thing to hit Stateside. Here’s what it’s all about: Set in China during the warring 1920s, notorious bandit chief Zhang descends upon a remote provincial town posing as its new mayor, an identity that he had hijacked from Old Tang, himself a small-time imposter. Hell-bent on making a fast buck, Zhang soon meets his match in the...
