Romeo Must Die: Remember this hip hop Jet Li flick?
Image
It can’t be denied that in the eighties and nineties, the action movies coming out of Hong Kong revolutionized the industry. Marrying the kinetic style of seventies grid house martial arts epics with the technological innovations and kinetic energy of the best American action movies of the era, directors like John Woo, Tsui Hark and Ringo Lam, and stars like Jackie Chan and Chow Yun-Fat made a huge mark internationally. In the mid-nineties, and in the face of Hong Kong’s 1997 handover to China, many of the biggest names from the scene found their way to America, and outside of Jackie Chan and John Woo, arguably the most successful transition was made by martial arts superstar Jet Li.

A former member of the Bejing Wushu team, Li’s arguably became the biggest martial arts movie star since Bruce Lee. Sure, Jackie Chan movies maybe made more money, but they,...

Was Eva Mendes Discovered From A Friend’s Photo?
Image
Eva Mendes was discovered through a friend’s portfolio (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Nope. Eva Mendes was spotted in a friend’s portfolio photo. Talk about a random break! Mendes, then a college student, was on her way to a marketing degree when a talent manager saw her picture and decided she had the look. The rest? As they say, it is history.

Mendes didn’t waste time following a traditional path. Her first role? Children of the Corn V: Fields of Terror—yes, a direct-to-video horror flick. And let’s just say, she wasn’t exactly handing out Oscars for her performance. In fact, she wasn’t too happy with how it turned out, so what did she do? She hired herself an acting coach and got serious about the craft. She wasn’t about to let one bad gig ruin her hustle.

Then came the quirky roles. In A Night at the Roxbury...

“He hurt a few people on set purposely”: Steven Seagal Has Pissed Off a Lot of Stars in Hollywood, Jean-Claude Van Damme is Not the Only One Who Hates Him
Image
Gaining recognition for his Aikido expertise and incorporating his martial arts techniques in his on-screen characters, Steven Seagal had also earned a reputation for being difficult on film sets, with reports of less-than-pleasant behavior toward his cast and crew.

In addition to his widely discussed rivalry with fellow action star Jean-Claude Van Damme, Seagal also had tensions with his Exit Wounds co-star Dmx, as the late rapper revealed that Seagal had a tendency to deliberately hurt people during filming.

Dmx Revealed Steven Seagal’s Intense and Controversial On-Set Behavior

The late actor and rapper Dmx and Steven Seagal shared the screen in two action movies, Beyond the Law and Exit Wounds, and the martial artist did not appear to have left a favorable impression on his co-star.

Steven Seagal once tried to throw Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau out of a meeting room
Image
A while back, a terrific book about the golden age of action stars called “The Last Action Heroes” came out (buy it here). Written by Nick De Semlyen, the book takes a very affectionate look at all of the icons we grew up with in the 80s and 90s, with one notable exception. Steven Seagal does not come off well in the book – at all. One of the wildest stories from the book recounts a time when Seagal grew outraged over the fact that a meeting room he wanted was being occupied by the legendary Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau.

The two actors, who would have been in their late sixties then, were participating in a read-through for their hit comedy Grumpy Old Men. According to the book, the vibe in the room was light, with the two old pros cracking up their director, Daniel Petrie and assembled guests. One of them was William Osborne,...

The Dire Wolf: Doom director Andrzej Bartkowiak takes the helm of supernatural thriller
Image
Andrzej Bartkowiak got his start in the entertainment industry working as a cinematographer, working on such films as Terms of Endearment, Prizzi’s Honor, Twins, Falling Down, Speed, Species, Dante’s Peak, The Devil’s Advocate, U.S. Marshals, Lethal Weapon 4, Thirteen Days, and Trespass. But back at the turn of the century he also got into directing, working mainly in the action genre: Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds, Cradle 2 the Grave, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, Maximum Impact, Dead Reckoning. His most well-known movie, for better or worse, may be the action horror video game adaptation Doom. Now Deadline has announced that Bartkowiak is treading back into horror territory, as he has signed on to direct the supernatural thriller The Dire Wolf.

Coming our way from Steelyard Pictures, The Dire Wolf has a screenplay written by Ry Cook and is expected to start filming in New Mexico soon, aiming for a 2024 release.

Andrzej Bartkowiak Set To Direct Supernatural Thriller ‘The Dire Wolf’ For Steelyard Pictures
Image
Exclusive: Steelyard Pictures, the production company behind 2022 horror thriller The Inhabitant, has attached Andrzej Bartkowiak (Romeo Must Die) to direct The Dire Wolf, a supernatural thriller to shoot in New Mexico, for release next year.

No word yet on the casting front. But the film tells the story of Hank Whitmore, a sharp and stubborn New Mexican sheriff who aligns with the Navajo Nation when a series of supernatural events threatens his family, his town, and his way of life.

Ry Cook penned the script and Leone Marucci will produce alongside Tetrad Studios’ Roy Scott Macfarland, Legacy Media Ventures’ Jeffrey Katz (Buffaloed), and Randy Mendelsohn. Matthew Coates and Kenneth Heilfron will serve as EPs.

“American cinema has long wrestled with our native culture’s spiritual connection to the natural world,” observed Marucci, explaining that “the extinct Dire Wolf was [once] indigenous to North America.

‘Dead Reckoning’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: K.J. Apa, Scott Adkins, James Remar, India Eisley, Ellie Cornell, Sydney Park, Devon Diep, Leah Procito, Patrick M. Walsh, James Michael Cummings | Written by Kristin Alexandre, A. Wayne Carter | Directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak

Sometimes, well more than sometimes if I’m honest, I’ll sit down to watch a film purely on the names in the cast and crew – as this film, Dead Reckoning, would attest.

Directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak, who helmed the superb action trifecta of Romeo Must Die, Cradle to the Grave and Exit Wounds in the early 2000s; and with a cast featuring Scott Adkins and James Remar, and to a lesser extent K.J. Apa – who plays Archie on TV”s Riverdale (a show I gave up watching after the death of Luke Perry); Dead Reckoning looks – on paper – like its right up my action-movie loving street…

Based, loosely, Very loosely, on the Boston marathon...

How Anthony Anderson’s Hollywood Ambitions Come Full Circle With Walk of Fame Honor
Image
Anthony Anderson’s Hollywood career has been consistently characterized by successful pivots, from scene-stealing comedic roles to searing dramatic turns to effervescent hosting duties and many disparate points in between. But even he couldn’t have predicted his latest foray into the unforeseen, as the first person to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the midst of a global pandemic.

“I was looking forward to the pomp and circumstance that surrounds anyone getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, because not just anyone can or will get that,” Anderson says.

The multi-hypenate hoped to celebrate with his family and closest friends in the typical high-profile public ceremony that usually accompanies the honor. But “unfortunately that type of event can’t happen because of what’s happening in the world right now.”

Rest assured, though, eventually he’ll bask directly in the glow of his personal landmark on Hollywood Boulevard.

Netflix schedule: Here’s what is coming and leaving in October 2019
Netflix has confirmed that a whopping 66 new original series, movies and specials will be debuting on the streaming service in October. Leading off the lineup is the eagerly awaited “Breaking Bad” movie, which the streaming service is billing as a “television event.” Emmy winner Aaron Paul reprises his role as Jesse Pinkman, who is on the run as his past catches up with him. The first half of the sixth and final season of the cult favorite “Bojack Horseman” will also drop this month.

Two features with awards buzz are coming to Netflix just weeks after their debuts at the Toronto film festival: “The Laundromat,” Steven Soderbergh‘s wry satire about international financial fraud that showcases Oscar darling Meryl Streep; and “Dolemite Is My Name,” a vehicle for Eddie Murphy who portrays 1970s comedian Rudy Ray Moore.

In the lead-up to Halloween, Netflix is programming a slew of scary fare,...

The 100: Characters Who Deserve More Screen Time
All characters are very different; there are no two people on a show that standout in the same way. The 100 has gotten lucky in the way that all of their characters manage to imprint themselves in the fans hearts.

The only issue? There are too many engaging characters and too much intense plot, which can sometimes result in a lack of screen time for some.

This doesn't have to be alarming, but when you have a show like The 100 where even the smallest character intrigues the viewers that are watching it can end up feeling like there is someone missing.

It really isn't a bad thing, far from it when you consider that more screen time is wanted for all these characters because they have already managed to capture the attention of the fans.

And yet with The 100 Season 5 airing now, there have been some absences that have been felt way too hard.

The 100 Season 5 Episode 6 Preview: Mysterious Happenings on "Exit Wounds"
We left The 100 Season 5 Episode 5 on a shocking note, not for us but for Clarke and Octavia. Clarke reunited with Madi, but her happiness was cut short when she saw Bellamy and Echo together. They may have been blurred out of the show, but it was clear as day for both of them.

Octavia was the miserable one though; she just ended a threat and Bellamy and here was her least favorite person testing her patience even more.

Based on the promo, Octavia isn't going to ease up on the Echo revelation. Her memories of her aren't the brightest, what with Echo trying to kill her twice then killing Ilian.

Octavia was just living her life thinking Echo lost hers to Praimfaya, but she is not the only one due for a shakeup.

Now The 100 Season 5 Episode 6 is using the title "Exit Wounds," so it might be safe to say...

The 100: Best New Relationships of Season 5
Relationships are essential to any show, but especially to The 100. The bonds that characters form push the plot in different directions and it creates a better story in the process.

Characters are nothing without relationships, both platonic and romantic. Each season The 100 introduces new characters and through that new bonds are formed that raise the stakes, but that also make you feel even more than you thought you could.

There is something special about rooting for different relationships and loving someone else's love. Whether it is found family, new romance, soulmate connections, friendships, partnerships, or even something that fits in the middle of that, The 100 delivers every single time.

Which is why I compiled a list of all the relationships that stood out the most so far based off strong writing, great acting, and even just the feeling that it created within the fandom.

These are the connections to look...

The 100 Season 5: Everything We Know So Far (Before the Trailer Drops)
The 100 has a well-documented history of delivering epic trailers, but since the Season 5 edition is still being kept under wraps — possibly in the Warner Bros. water tower, right next the Animaniacs — fans have more questions than ever about what’s next for our favorite (and least-favorite) survivors.

This may not all be news for die-hard fans who spend sleepless nights analyzing tweets and crafting theories, but for those of you who haven’t been obsessively combing the web for updates, here’s what we know so far:

* Let’s start small: The fifth season premieres Tuesday, April 24 at 9/8c.

* The title sequence,...

Portia de Rossi joins Steven Seagal accusers by Jennie Kermode - 2017-11-09 14:52:11
Steven Seagal Photo: Gage Skidmore

Portia de Rossi has joined an increasing number of women making sexual harassment claims against Exit Wounds star Steven Seagal. "My final audition for a Steven Segal movie took place in his office," she tweeted yesterday. "He told me how important it was to have chemistry off-screen as he sat me down and unzipped his leather pants. I ran out and called my agent. Unfazed, she replied, 'well, I didn’t know if he was your type.'"

De Rossi's wife, television presenter Ellen DeGeneres, expressed her pride in De Rossi for speaking out.

Last week saw Julianna Margulies recall an encounter in which she agreed to meet Seagal (with whom she co-starred in Out For Justice) in a hotel room to discuss a role. She alleges that he had a gun with him when she arrived and that she doesn't know how she got out of the room unscathed.

Jonathan Sothcott interview: producing independent films in the UK
Kirsten Howard Aug 8, 2017

Producer Jonathan Sothcott talks about running an independent film company in the UK, finding the right project and a post-Brexit industry.

Jonathan Sothcott has had a hand in producing a whole lot of independent films here in the UK over the last decade. You may have even seen a fair few of them yourself, especially if you’re a Danny Dyer completest.
