All of the scenes taking place at Rocky Mountain High School were filmed at the existing W. Charles Akins High School in Austin, Texas. During that time, half of the school was unoccupied, as it had just been opened and only 9th and 10th graders were attending. The marquee outside of the school was replaced to show the name of the film's high school which, combined with how recently the school had just opened its doors, created confusion for parents and buses trying to drop off the actual students.
