Nostalgia ahoy! With Sherlock Holmes more popular than ever, Alex looks back at eighties children's drama, The Baker Street Boys...
The BBC's contemporary take on Arthur Conan Doyle's short stories has made Sherlock the most popular television drama series in many years. Benedict Cumberbatch has made Sherlock his own, his approach to the role as radical for the current era as the late, great Jeremy Brett's was a generation ago. Martin Freeman has banished our memories of his role as Tim Canterbury in Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's The Office, with his wonderful re-assessment of Dr John Watson. The corporation is making the most of the Conan Doyle franchise. After from two rather lacklustre yuletide cases, firstly with Richard Roxburgh in 2002 then Rupert Everett in 2004; they finally have a hit on their hands. The benchmark hitherto has always been Granada Television...

Production designer behind the deadly gadgets used by James Bond – and his foes
The production designer Syd Cain, who has died aged 93, was one of many behind-the-scenes professionals elevated to something like prominence by the worldwide interest in the James Bond films. An industry veteran who began work in British cinema as a draughtsman in 1947, contributing to the look of the gothic melodrama Uncle Silas, Cain is credited on a range of film and television projects, but remains best known for his work in various design capacities on the 007 series, from Dr No in 1962 to GoldenEye in 1995.
Born in Grantham, Lincolnshire, Cain served in the armed forces in the second world war, surviving a plane crash and recovering from a broken back. Working at Denham Studios in Buckinghamshire in the 1940s and 50s, he moved up from uncredited draughtsman (on Adam and Evelyne, The Interrupted Journey, You Know What Sailors Are...

From great escapes to volcanic eruptions, a new prime minister to a raw-meat dress, we review the most dramatic moments of the year through the eyes of those with first-hand experience…
12 January: Haiti's capital is devastated by an earthquake.
By Simon Cording, rescue worker
Day to day I'm a fireman, but I'm also part of the International Search and Rescue Team. We are deployed whenever disasters take place around the world. I was at work in Manchester when I got a text message telling me to get myself ready because we were going to Haiti later that day. We always have our bags ready, so it was just a matter of grabbing my passport. It was snowing in the UK and Heathrow was closed, but we got special dispensation to fly out around midnight and the airport was opened just for us.
We were met by scenes of mass devastation at Port au Prince airport.

Film-maker associated with Michael Caine
The film director and producer Geoffrey Reeve, who has died aged 77, contributed polished examples of mainstream British cinema in a variety of forms over several decades.
He was born in Tring, Hertfordshire, the son of a compositor who would cycle each day to the printworks in nearby King's Langley. A bright pupil at the local primary, Reeve won a county council scholarship to Berkhamsted school where he excelled in sports, academic subjects and school plays. He was also a notable chorister, an experience he would put to good use for the subplot of the film Shadow Run 50 years later.
After national service with the 7th Royal Tank Regiment in Hong Kong, he went to Exeter College, Oxford, in 1953 to read law. His singing voice and his gift for comic acting made him a useful addition to Oxford's drama and revue companies, and he was apparently...

Movie legend Sir Michael Caine stars in the most shocking film of his career - when he threatens to shoot a pregnant woman. Queasy cinema-goers are already dubbing Sir Michael New's film Shiner as Britain's answer to Reservoir Dogs. One preview audience was left dumb-founded after Sir Michael's thuggish character held a gun against a pregnant woman's stomach and threatened to kill her. Viewers also see a hitman's brains hanging from the back of his head after being blown away by the film's villain Gibson, played by Kenneth Cranham. Caine, who plays a small-time East End gangster and boxing promoter Billy "Shiner" Simpson, admits, "It gets more and more serious and vicious as time goes on." He adds, "Billy is a real low-life Cockney East End gangster. He has a lot of power, a big fish in a very small pond. He is typical of gangsters who control a small area who are idolised, but he wouldn't make it in the West End or among the big guys." But pressure group Mediawatch-uk, which monitors UK films for taste, blasted the violence in Shiner as "unforgivable". John Beyer, director of mediawatch-uk, says, "I think this is scandalous. Any violence or threat of violence against a pregnant woman is simply unforgivable."...

Michael Caine could easily have chosen life as a gangster over a career in acting. Caine, who was brought up in south London, plays a violent boxing promoter in new movie Shiner (2000), and claims he could have slipped into a real-life career of violence and crime as a young man. He says, "I could have been like him [Shiner]. I grew up with lots of Shiners. He's based on a gangster I knew." He believes he was rescued by a Methodist preacher who introduced him to amateur dramatics at the age of 14.

Michael Caine will receive yet another movie industry award - but this time it's his charisma rather than his acting that's getting the seal of approval. Sir Michael will be honoured with the Donostia Award at the 48th San Sebastian Film Festival in Madrid, Spain, for being "one of the most charismatic figures in international cinema". Caine, who received a best actor award from San Sebastian in 1996 for Blood and Wine (1997), will be on hand for the screening of Shiner (2000), in which he stars.
