Stephen Colbert Brought Back This Classic 'Saturday Night Live' Character Just in Time for the Papal Conclave
Image
With the papal conclave meeting last week, Stephen Colbert brought in an expert on the subject who also happens to be a classic Saturday Night Live character. Father Guido Sarducci (Don Novello) graced the Ed Sullivan Theater on The Late Show last week, delivering his traditionally offbeat predictions, none of which actually came to pass. Colbert is a famously devout Catholic, but he clearly doesn't have any problem poking a little fun at the church.

The chain-smoking Sarducci came out looking for an ashtray: although Colbert insisted that he couldn't smoke on network television, Sarducci told him that current Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. had decreed that menthols were okay, and also good for polio. He also offered his opinions on the movie Conclave: he wishes it was animated, because if the cardinals had moved like Sonic the Hedgehog, it would have been half an hour shorter.

Anime is becoming an incredibly mainstream medium. Series like One Piece, Dragon Ball, Naruto and Demon Slayer haved now reached immense heights, especially among the younger generation. Of course, anime fandom goes back several decades, so only the most hardcore fans are even aware of certain, now-forgotten anime.

The most obscure anime won't be recognized by most modern fans, especially when it comes to retro series. Some of these anime even fell under the radar when they came out, while others have simply been forgotten by time, despite their initial popularity. While they aren't mainstream hits nowadays, newer anime fans will want to check them out to go beyond the mainstream and feel the full history of the medium.

Disney Turned A Supernatural Western Into An Infamous Comedy Flop
Image
When Will Finn's and John Standford's animated musical Western "Home on the Range" was released, it came with an elegiac announcement. Disney, you see, had been struggling throughout the early 2000s. The 1990s renaissance was over, and much of the studio's more recent output was either failing critically or commercially. Films like "Fantasia 2000," "The Emperor's New Groove," and "Atlantis: The Lost Empire" were only modest successes, while films like "Dinosaur" and "Brother Bear" were coming and going without much notice. The studio's clunky sci-fi epic "Treasure Planet" notoriously lost buckets of money, which didn't inspire confidence. It didn't help that DreamWorks was attracting huge animation audiences with films like "Shrek" — a notoriously anti-Disney movie.

As such, to appear competitive, Disney announced that "Home on the Range" was going to be the studio's last-ever traditionally hand-drawn feature film. After that, it was to be 100% CGI. Animation purists panicked, feeling...

We were robbed of some epic rides based on this now-cult Disney movie!
Image
The failure of Walt Disney’s Atlantis: The Lost Empire was a tragedy for animation fans, but it also robbed us of what could have been some spectacular theme park rides!

In the annals of Disney animation, 2001’s Atlantis: The Lost Empire has an odd place. In its time, it was a box office flop, $186 million off a reported $120 million budget. Its failure was seen as the turning point for Disney animation, and, combined with the following year’s bigger failure of Treasure Planet, it resulted in the death of 2-D animated features.

In the nearly quarter-century since its release, Atlantis has been re-evaluated by Disney fans as an underrated gem. It’s been praised for its animation, its story and wonderful characters and deserved a better box office fate.

What’s overlooked is that Disney really had hoped this movie would be their next big animated hit. They were...

10 Best Animated Movies of All Time, According to Roger Ebert
Image
Animated films are some of the first pieces of fictional storytelling that young audiences are exposed to, having a deep impact on new generations' understanding of how narratives can impact them. The best animated movies, the ones that resonate with children and adults alike, are the ones that are able to entertain audiences young and old with stories that hide deeper meaning under the surface.

A few animated films were able to appear on Roger Ebert's coveted Great Movies list, a collection of a few hundred films that he felt stood the test of time and would remain important pieces of movie history. These animated films are the ones that best capture the human experience and deep emotional truths through one of the oldest mediums in the history of film.

'Hellboy' creator adapts Disney masterpiece (and we missed it!)
Image
Superhero fans around the world know Mike Mignola for the creation of Hellboy and The Amazing Screw-On Head, along with many other contributions to the comic book industry with Marvel and DC. However, his work with Disney is one of his most underappreciated accomplishments.

Although most fans likely prefer his work with Hellboy, Abe Sapien, and the rest of the Brpd, Disney buffs everywhere know him for bringing us Atlantis: The Lost Empire. Disney's steampunk sci-fi epic from the 2000s was truly a stroke of genius that desperately needs to be seen, and a second chance lurks in the shadows for modern viewers.

Although many Disney fans might consider Treasure Planet the studio's most criminally underrated classic, this writer firmly believes that Atlantis should have been the biggest adventure Disney ever brought to life. A mysterious journal, a submarine expedition, and a lost...

Stitch takes to the field to dominate his own game of Keep away in the new Lilo & Stitch Super Bowl spot
Image
The latest promotional spot for Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch made its debut during Super Bowl Lix. It features the feral, blue alien running rampant on a football field, sewing seeds of chaos everywhere he goes.

I know we’re getting swamped with live-action versions of animated favorites, and only more are coming (Snow White arrives in March; Moana sets sail in 2026), but Lilo & Stitch feels like one of the few worthy of spinning in such a way.

Maybe not all of us have been on board, and the teaser released last November made Stitch look more like a demonic menace than the more adorable version we got in the animated movie. Still, something in the original feels more interesting to explore in the live-action format. I get that’s an unpopular opinion, but add to that Dean Fleischer Camp – the mind behind the lovely Marcel...

Quick LinksDisney's Bolt Was a Successful But Almost Forgotten Disney FilmDisney's Bolt Helped Save Walt Disney Animation in the Early 2000sDisney's Bolt Has a Similar Premise to Disney • Pixar’s Toy Story

It's possible only Disney fans remember Bolt(2008). One of the first fully computer-generated movies Disney produced without the partnership of Pixar in the early 2000s. The studio was struggling to make the transition from hand-drawn animation to CGI at the time, and Bolt gave the studio the boost it needed. Starring John Travolta and a young Miley Cyrus, the movie follows a dog who believes he has the same superpowers as his TV persona. It premiered on November 17, 2008, at Disney's El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, California, and ranked third at the box office in its opening weekend.

Critically and financially, it was a hit for Disney. However, over the years, a shadow has fallen over Bolt, and it's...

10 Disney Movie Deaths That Made Absolutely No Sense
Image
Character deaths are all too common in Disney films, even though it's a pretty family-friendly company. Whether they move the story forward, teach a character a critical lesson, or both, death is a powerful narrative device throughout Disney's films. Many of these deaths provide insight into the world audiences find themselves in and reveal larger messages about the story being told. But some deaths, even if they set the film in motion, come out of nowhere.

Death is an impactful storytelling choice when threaded into the story properly, and there are many Disney films that exhibit this. However, there are also plenty of Disney films that utilize death in a shaky way that may have the intention of moving the plot along or instilling something in a character but ultimately come across as a poor balancing of narrative arcs. Audiences can't help but wonder where the trajectory of the film...

Josh Gad Says Olaf's Original Frozen II Death Scene Left Kids 'Fully Traumatized'
Image
Olaf's death in Frozen II is arguably the saddest moment in the franchise. But, according to Josh Gad, who voiced the lovable snowman in both films, the character's death in the original script was much more brutal.

The actor detailed the devastating scene in his new memoir In Gad We Trust, explaining that writer-director Jennifer Lee had to rewrite it. "Jen and I started recording the dialogue and I couldn't get through it without sobbing," Gad recalled in an excerpt from his book via Entertainment Weekly. "Those first recordings were brutal, and I remember feeling that we were doing something that was going to pack a serious punch."

‘Bandidos’ Season 2 Netflix Review: Treasure Hunting Series Suffers Sophomore Slump Due To Lili
Image
Stories about treasure hunting are awesome. Way before I was introduced to the world of movies, I was reading Treasure Island, Sinbad the Sailor, and the purposefully anticlimactic Sonar Kella. Then there were the Tintin comics and the amazing 2011 film, The Adventures of Tintin, that absolutely enthralled me. Mackenna’s Gold and King Solomon’s Mines were brought up in every conversation with my parents so many times that I have lost count at this point. Despite the tacky nature of the franchises, the Lara Croft and The Mummy movies were hugely influential. Animated feature films like Treasure Planet, The Road to El Dorado and Atlantis: The Lost Empire were on repeat in my household. Despite the problematic nature of its lead, there’s no denying the effect that the first 3 Pirates of the Caribbean films had on me. One Piece, the manga and the anime, is another great example. And even...

Quick Links Princess Kida of Atlantis Is Thousands of Years Old Princess Kida Is a Superhuman Guardian of Atlantis Kida Reappeared in a Failed Atlantis TV Series

Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) is both a Disney cult classic and a box office bomb. The film has gained more recognition over the years, with millennial audiences first exposed to it at a young age. It was an ambitious movie for Disney at the time, featuring no musical numbers and with a steampunk high concept. Produced by many of the same team that worked on The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996), the goal of the filmmakers was to make a more action than fantasy-oriented film. But it still wasn't without one key recurring Disney element: a princess.

Younger Disney audiences may not be familiar with Kida of Atlantis. She first appears in the movie as a young girl who watches her mother get swept away by otherworldly forces.

Everything We Know About Disney's Live-Action Hunchback of Notre Dame Remake
Image
The Hunchback of Notre Dame is one of the best movies from Disney's Renaissance Era, and it is rumored to be Disney's next live-action remake. The movie is a musical-animated epic released on June 21, 1996, directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise. Tom Hulce, Tony Jay, Kevin Kline, and Demi Moore all expertly lend their voice talents to the film, and it includes extremely catchy and memorable songs written by musical legends Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz. The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a marvel of its time; it is beautifully animated and has had a lasting impact on generations of viewers. However, even at a time when everything seems to be getting a reboot, Quasimodo the Hunchback has seemingly been left behind.

Disney seems less interested in moving forward with this project and instead continues to pursue other ideas. To name a few, a live-action portrayal of Lilo & Stitch is...

Controversial Disney film "Certified Fresh" almost 30 years later
Image
Although Disney is known for over 100 years of animated masterpieces, not every one of them is worthy of an Academy Award. That said, it's criminal to see just how many of Disney's best and brightest often go overlooked.

Fantasia 2000 (1999), Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001), and Treasure Planet (2002) are just a small handful of Disney's underrated gems, but there's one that truly towers above the rest (in more ways than one).

Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame Scores Overdue Win

Per their social media post, RottenTomatoes recently announced that Disney's adaptation of the Victor Hugo gothic novel finally achieved a Fresh Rating, currently at 80%. While it's certainly unusual for a decades-old film to make the page with this change, those who know what all went into it know that it was bound to happen eventually.

Although the House of Mouse took several artistic liberties when retelling this tale of religion, lust, and acceptance,...

Moana 2 Is The Success Story Disney Missed Out On 21 Years Ago With Sequel To $186 Million Disappointment
Image
In under a decade, Moana is already getting a live-action remake much sooner than any other Disney princess, and her sequel film, Moana 2, has hit theaters with early success. Moana 2 also joins a once-rare club as one of the Disney animated sequels to go to theaters.

While this has become more commonplace with movies like Frozen 2 and Ralph Breaks the Internet, in the past, many Disney animated movie sequels would go straight to video or DVD. The quality of these films also was not always as impressive as their original movies. This was the case for the sequel to Atlantis: The Lost Empire; however, that movie -- like Moana 2 -- was not initially meant to be a film. It was meant to be a television series. However, it was made into a film almost as if this were a form of punishment, while Moana 2 builds off Moana's initial success.

This Disney Princess Has The Biggest Age Gap With Their Love Interest
Image
The age gaps between Disney princesses and their love interests can vary greatly, but one Disney romance has a much larger age gap than any of the others, by over 1000 years. Disney has recently been moving away from the traditional fairytale romance storylines that many Disney Princess movies revolve around. Many modern and unofficial Disney princesses do not even have a love interest, with Elsa's and Moana's stories focusing on sisterhood and self-discovery. Though traditional Disney love stories are still popular, the age gaps can sometimes be large, which has been getting both attention and criticism.

Snow White, the first Disney Princess, had a traditional romance storyline, but Disney princesses have changed greatly since then. This is partly due to greater attention being paid to the messages that the Disney Princess brand promotes. Modern Disney princess storylines are less likely to revolve around finding romance, with the relationships...

From 2001 to 2003, director Peter Jackson forever changed the face of cinema when he pulled off what was thought to be the impossible task of bringing J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings trilogy to life on the big screen. Many people may not be aware of the humble beginnings of Jackson's career, having started by making independent films in New Zealand, but it was The Frighteners that marked one of his first experiences of making a major studio film, one that unfortunately didn't reach the same level of admiration as his later works. The truth is, however, had it not been for the making that he achieved in making that one specific film,...

Thirty Years Of Disney’s Gargoyles
Image
For three decades the story of stone creatures come to life has both entertained and fascinated viewers. Originally airing on a program block associated with light hearted children’s entertainment showed that animation could be much more than just “kids stuff”. Let us revisit the mysterious and enchanted world of Disney’s Gargoyles.

Created by producer Greg Wiseman, the series stood out against its contemporaries at the Disney Afternoon program block. Unlike other shows focused on gags and slapstick comedy, Gargoyles took a darker and more episodic approach similar to Batman: The Animated Series, which aired around the same time.

The series saw a group of Gargoyles who had been frozen for millennia awaken in New York City. They decide to make the city their new home and defend it from various threats.

They are led by Goliath (Keith David) with the rest of the clan being named after various...

The Simpsons Voice Actor Who Replaced Robin Williams In The Aladdin Franchise
Image
As denizens of Blockbuster Video will be able to attest, the mid-1990s to early 2000s saw a massive glut of animated straight-to-video sequels and prequels to many of Disney's known animated features. There were sequels to "The Fox and the Hound," "Bambi," "Cinderella," "The Little Mermaid," "The Lion King," "Lady and the Tramp," "Atlantis: The Lost Empire," "The Emperor's New Groove," "Mulan," "Pocahontas," "Tarzan," "The Jungle Book," and even "Brother Bear." The sequels all came when there was a change of leadership at Disney, and the studio tripled-down on the mandate to make as much money as possible.

The only people who watched these movies were nostalgic Disney-obsessed adults who viewed them as a scientific curiosity, and sought to use them as talking points in long-form online articles. Very occasionally, the films were rented from Blockbuster by anyone who happened to be seven years old when the sequel in question was released.

How to Watch the Lilo and Stitch Movies in Order
Image
When Lilo and Stitch was released in theaters in June 2002, nobody could have expected it to be the complete hit Disney animation needed. After a successful run in the '90s known as the Disney Renaissance with films like Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King, the animation studio hit a rough spot in the early 2000s. The studio had high-profile disappointments like The Emperor's New Groove, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, and the film following Lilo and Stitch, Treasure Planet, would be one of the biggest bombs in the studio's history.

Created by Chris Sanders, this original concept with no relation to a popular fairy tale or story, as well as being a science-fiction property, felt like an odd pick for a Disney animated film with all the pedigree that comes with it. Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch gets a 2025 release date as the cuddly, goblin-mode alien scrabbles toward cinemas

Everyone’s favorite furry, blue alien is getting ready to make his live-action debut in theaters when Disney’s Lilo & Stitch arrives on May 23, 2025! Brazenly, that Memorial Day weekend is the same release window for Christopher McQuarrie’s Mission: Impossible movie with Tom Cruise. ‘The Wild Robot’ Has What It Takes to Turn $35 Million Opening Into a Long, Successful Run | Analysis
Image
It’s harder these days for animated films to find an audience without a recognizable brand. But with both critic and moviegoer acclaim on its side, Universal/DreamWorks’ “The Wild Robot” has the tools it needs to turn a modest $35 million domestic opening weekend into a long theatrical run that could last through the end of the year.

“Robot” will have to defy a historic trend of tough roads to success for animated science fiction. One critical strategy will be to leverage positive reviews and word of mouth to appeal to families and women over 35 at a time when the box office offers those audiences fewer options.

“Robot” took in $53 million globally in its opening weekend, a solid performance against a reported $78 million budget.

But the $35 million domestic box office was not close to the $43.7 million opening (unadjusted for inflation) that the franchise-spawning “How to Train Your Dragon” earned in...

Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters Directors On Making A Hellboy Documentary For Everyone
Image
Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters charts the rise of one of the most iconic modern comic creators. Dubbed the Mignolaverse by many, Mignolas interconnected world is full of beloved characters like Abe Sapien, Witchfinder, and Lobster Johnson.

“The world was so ungrateful to you”: The Early 2000s Gave us 4 Western Animated Movies That Could Rival Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli Until Disney and Pixar’s CGI Revolution Massacred it

When it comes to traditional animation, big studios have definitely given arms against the quality and sophistication of animation that comes out of Far East countries. Anime has essentially set the benchmark for traditional animation, and Western animation giants have pivoted to 3D animation to create stories. However, there are a few traditionally animated films that have a special place in the hearts of fans, that are treated like cult classics, despite their abysmal box office runs.

Iron Giant || Credit: Warner Brothers.

There are four animated films that have been part of public discourse and are appreciated for their unique blend of CGI and traditional animation, having essentially perfected a style of animation that became vanishingly rare as soon as it broke into the mainstream. These films were plagued with spotty box office returns, the kind that killed any hopes of these films ever getting sequels or even another look from their respective studios.

Leonard Nimoy's 5 Best Movie & TV Roles Outside Of Star Trek, Ranked
Image
It's hard not to love Leonard Nimoy. The gifted actor, writer, director, and photographer was not just the absolute perfect person to bring Spock to life on "Star Trek," but he was also, by all accounts, a genuinely wonderful human being. Nimoy always brought a sense of kindness and respect to those he met, and feedback from fans would indicate that he was always a genuine soul, right up until the day he passed.

Although fans will likely debate this fact until the sun burns out, Spock is what elevated "Star Trek" beyond "good" into "great," and his character laid the groundwork for how "Trek" stories should be told in every iteration moving forward. His character was the embodiment of how logic and emotion are at the core of just about every conflict a being could face, making him both an outsider to the humans he worked alongside ... yet, given...

How On Earth Does Michael J. Fox's Forgotten Disney Movie Only Have 49% On Rotten Tomatoes?!

Not every Disney movie can be Frozen or The Lion King, and for every smash hit theres a jewel lost in the depths of the ocean. At least, thats the case for Atlantis: The Lost Empire, a movie that, despite gaining cult classic status, has only 49% on Rotten Tomatoes. Released in an era of princesses and musical prowess, the darker-toned Atlantis has been buried as one of Disneys animated failures, but the creative risks make it one of the most underrated and unique Disney movies of the early 2000s.

Atlantis Concept Art Is a Jaw-Dropping Look at Disney's Most Underrated Movie

Atlantis: The Lost Empire had a rocky start but now has a dedicated fanbase, thanks to Mike Mignola's iconic design influence. Mike Mignola's work on Atlantis was inspired by classic adventure stories, giving the film a unique steampunk feel. Despite receiving a lackluster response at the time of its release, Atlantis: The Lost Empire has gone on to become a cult favorite among Disney animation fans. What began as a small idea has become one of Disney’s most recognizable properties worldwide, with multiple films, television shows, video games, and even stage musicals.

The story famously borrows heavily from Shakespeare, specifically from the tragedy Hamlet, but other biblical stories, such as Joseph and Moses, were also very influential.

The story focuses on Simba (Johnathan Taylor Thomas), a lion cub meant to be the next king of the Pride Lands after his father Mufasa’s (James Earl Jones) reign. Mufasa’s brother Scar (Jeremy Irons) wants the throne for himself and stages Mufasa’s death, making Simba believe he was responsible.

Simba runs away and meets Timon (Nathan Jones) and Pummba (Ernie Sabella), a meerkat and warthog who decide to raise...

Michael J. Fox’s 13-Year-Old HBO Comedy Show Character Is His Most Hilarious Role In Decades

Michael J. Fox's role on Curb Your Enthusiasm was his most hilarious in decades, showcasing his comedic genius. The feud between Larry David and Michael J. Michael J. Fox's most hilarious role in decades occurred 13 years ago on the HBO comedy show Curb Your Enthusiasm. Michael J. Fox’s First Film Was a Disney Box Office Bomb

Michael J. Fox has had a lengthy and rather interesting movie career. While he's best known for his role as Marty McFly in the Back to the Future trilogy, he also starred in Teen Wolf (which served as inspiration for an extremely popular reboot) and lent his voice to the Disney cult classic Atlantis: The Lost Empire. Explained: Why Disney Stopped Making 2D-Animated Movies
Image
If there’s one film company that everyone’s heard of, that’s The Walt Disney Company. Since its inception in 1923, Disney has been breaking new ground in the American animation industry. Disney broke out into the world of feature film animation in 1937 with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. But despite being groundbreaking at the time, the method of animation used for classic Disney films has become outdated. While Disney is most known for some of their classic 2D animations like Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King, Disney's last 2D animated films were The Princess & The Frog, released in 2009, and Winnie the Pooh in 2011.

While this departure from hand-drawn 2D animation seemed like the end of an era for some Disney fans — who might, in fact, still want Disney's next movie to be 2D — others were glad to see a total switch to 3D, moving on to make hits like Tangled,...
