Brace yourselves. This list of the Top 100 Greatest Gay Movies is probably going to generate some howls of protest thanks to a rather major upset in the rankings. Frankly, one that surprised the hell out of us here at AfterElton.
But before we get to that, an introduction. A few weeks ago we asked AfterElton readers to submit up to ten of their favorite films by write-in vote. We conducted a similar poll several years ago, but a lot has happened culturally since then, and a number of worthy movies of gay interest have been released. We wanted to see how your list of favorites had changed.
We also wanted to expand our list to 100 from the top 50 we had done previously. We figured there were finally enough quality gay films to justify the expansion. And we wanted to break out gay documentaries onto their own list (You'll find the...

Melancholia Tops European Film Awards, Lars von Trier Bypassed, Colin Firth Beats Jean Dujardin [Photo: Stephen Frears.] The Artist, a favorite for the 2012 Oscar, won a single Efa Award: Best European Composer, Ludovic Bource, who thanked the film's perky dog, Uggie, for providing the necessary inspiration. Writer-director Michel Hazanavicius wasn't even nominated; star Jean Dujardin lost to Colin Firth. Other Efa 2011 winners include Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne's screenplay for The Kid with a Bike; Wim Wenders' documentary Pina, Germany's submission for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar; Tono Errando, Javier Mariscal, and Fernando Trueba's bolero-rhythmed animated feature and potential Oscar contender Chico & Rita; Terry Gilliam's short The Wholly Family, about an American family visiting Naples; and Hans Van Nuffel's Dutch-Belgian drama Oxygen, the European Discovery of 2011. Oxygen tells the story of two young men in love — and suffering from incurable illnesses. Efa winners of non-competitive awards were...

first and last puzzles. Can you guess the movie?
first image:
last line:
"You'll see. You'll see how far away we'll be."
This one took a while for people to guess. It's such a good movie. The answer is [highlight the invisible text] Burnt Money (2000) from Argentina. Really intense crime drama about "the twins" who aren't twins but gay lovers. You should rent it.

Leonardo Sbaraglia, Epitafios Leonardo Sbaraglia, Helena Bonham Carter and Bob Hoskins are three film personalities nominated for the 2010 International Emmy Awards, announced Monday, Oct. 4. Sbaraglia, one of the stars of Marcelo Piñeyro's unusual crime drama Burnt Money, received a best actor nomination for his copycat serial killer in HBO Latin America's Argentinean mini-series Epitafios, which is also in contention for best drama series. Bonham Carter is up for best actress for the BCC4's biopic Enid, in which she plays author Enid Blyton, whose life wasn't nearly as rosy as the stories found in her children's books. Hoskins' nomination was for best actor for his role as a sobered-up alcoholic who takes on the neighborhood's top thug in BBC1's The Street, which also received a nod for best drama series. Additionally, Sebastian Koch, one of the leading men in the Oscar-winning The Lives of Others, is a best...

In celebration of the fantastic news that Argentina is set to become the first country in South America to legalize same-sex marriage, I thought this would be a good time to look at eight other reasons — some gay, some not — that Argentina is great!
1) Burnt Money
This 2000 Argentinian film is based on the true story of two men who were bank robbers — and lovers — who come to a tragic end. It was also particularly noteworthy for being especially steamy. The film was nominated for and won a number of awards, but most importantly, our readers placed it at #23 on the list of Greatest Gay/Bisexual Movies of All Time.
2) Tennis star Juan Martin Del Potro and Rugby Union star Juan Martin Hernandez
Okay, Argentina is loaded with hot men, but these two especially caught our eye! Del Potro is notable because he is currently ranked the 7th best tennis player...

Why aren’t there more good gay movies? We hear this complaint at AfterElton.com a lot, and we’ve even made it a few times ourselves (although we think the results of this poll prove that there are more good movies than many of us think!).
There are surely many reasons why more “mainstream” movies don’t include gay or bisexual themes, but no doubt one of them is heterosexual discomfort – not just discomfort on the part of audiences and network executives, but also discomfort on the part of critics and others to champion these films.
This is where our poll of AfterElton.com readers on the 50 Greatest Gay Movies comes in. We can think of no better way to encourage the creation of more good gay movies than to praise and support the existence of past good gay movies!
How does this list compare to our previous poll?...
