In 2003, Martin Scorsese was cooling off after his long-in-the-making epic "Gangs of New York." Although that film was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, some of Scorsese's fans now consider "Gangs of New York" to be an overstuffed film that took way too much time to percolate (Scorsese had initially envisioned the project back in 1970). After fighting so hard to get "Gangs of New York" made and bearing the publicity whirlwind around its Oscars campaign, Scorsese needed a rest.
Scorsese rested in the way an active and prolific director rests: he churned out another project. 2003 saw the release of a multipart documentary series called "The Blues," which Scorsese produced and directed the first episode of. "The Blues" was a seven-episode film cycle, with each chapter detailing a different corner of the vast American Blues experience. Each episode was helmed by a different famous director. The series aired on PBS in September...

A little over a year ago, it was reported that Noah Baumbach has been tapped to helm his fourth project with Netflix after Marriage Story, White Noise and The Meyerowitz Stories. Plot details are still kept under wraps and it was only this past January that Netflix revealed the title of the film will be Jay Kelly. Baumbach directs the film from a screenplay written by him and the movie’s co-star, Emily Mortimer. Baumbach reunites with his Meyerowitz Stories star Adam Sandler and pairs him up with George Clooney. Netflix continues to dole out the details of the film little by little and today, we are treated to a single image of the film. Take a gander below.

Director/producer Martin Scorsese, continues developing his feature "The Gangs of New York" (2002) as an episodic dramatic series for Miramax:
The new series will focus on events surrounding organized gangs in the late 19th century, in New York, Chicago and New Orleans.
"This time and era of America’s history and heritage is rich with characters and stories that we could not fully explore in a two hour film," said Scorsese.
"A television series allows us the time and creative freedom to bring this colorful world, and all the implications it had and still does on our society, to life…”
“In 1863, ‘Amsterdam Vallon’ returns to the ‘Five Points of America’ to seek vengeance against the psychotic gangland kingpin, ‘Bill the Butcher’, who murdered his father years earlier.

It’s been exactly 20 years since Harvey Weinstein exited Miramax in 2005, but the studio is returning to the Weinstein-produced film roots to mine IP for new TV series. Jonathan Glickman, who became the head of Miramax in 2024, confirmed to Variety that the studio is developing shows or limited series based on films like “Gangs of New York,” “Chocolat,” “The English Patient,” “Cop Land,” and “Shall We Dance.”
While the “Gangs of New York” series was already announced, with director Martin Scorsese executive producing and directing the first two episodes, it is clear that the 2002 feature is just one of the many early 2000s films that Miramax is looking to adapt into episodic viewing. The original feature that was produced by Weinstein infamously led Scorsese to contemplate quitting Hollywood due to its Billy Butcher-ed production. Yet Glickman is looking to take the Weinstein of it all out of Miramax’s history,...

Netflix is bringing another classic novel adaptation to the screen. Edith Wharton's The Age of Innocence, which was previously filmed by Martin Scorsese in 1993, is being adapted into a miniseries at the streamer. The news comes on the heels, coincidentally, of Miramax announcing plans to produce a series adaptation of Gangs of New York, another Scorsese film that, like The Age of Innocence, also starred Daniel Day-Lewis.
Netflix has tapped British screenwriter Emma Frost, a veteran of Shameless, The Spanish Princess, and The Man in the High Castle, to showrun the series. Frost is not to be confused with the Marvel Comics character of the same name, although she did write for The White Queen. It will attempt to stay true to the novel's original themes, while also bringing the novel to a new, younger audience. The series is the latest in Netflix's attempts to mine the literary canon for content.

As it emerges from the shadow of longtime boss Harvey Weinstein, who is now a convicted sex offender, Miramax is raiding its vaults to expand its media footprint. Some of its most acclaimed films, including Gangs of New York, The English Patient, and Chocolat, are being developed as TV series. Variety reports that new studio head Jonathan Glickman is spearheading the effort to make the most of the studio's 1990s-2000s golden age, when it was a regular contender at the Academy Awards.
The profile documents Miramax's attempts to recapture its past glories, while mending fences with creators who were burned by Weinstein in the past; in addition to the mooted TV series, it also covers the revival of Scary Movie, which will herald the return of the series' original creators, Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, and Keenen Ivory Wayans. Martin Scorsese is remembering the late Pope Francis. The Catholic Church leader died on Easter at age 88. Scorsese, whose features iconically capture the influence of Roman Catholicism on both Italian-Americans and the scripture as a whole, shared a statement with IndieWire as a tribute to the Pope.
“There is so much that can be said about the significance of Pope Francis and everything he meant to the world, to the church, to the papacy. I will leave that to others,” Scorsese said. “He was, in every way, a remarkable human being. He acknowledged his own failings. He radiated wisdom. He radiated goodness. He had an ironclad commitment to the good. He knew in his soul that ignorance was a terrible plague on humanity. So he never stopped learning. And he never stopped enlightening. And, he embraced, preached and practiced forgiveness. Universal and constant forgiveness.”

Martin Scorsese's near-$200 million historical epic is coming to streaming in April. The 2002 crime drama Gangs of New York started the filmmaker's long working relationship with Leonardo DiCaprio.
Paramount+ subscribers will be able to stream Gangs of New York beginning on Tuesday, April 1 — though they might want to settle in because the sprawling period drama clocks in at 168 minutes. DiCaprio leads the movie as the vengeful son of an Irish gang leader who returns to New York City as an adult intent on revenge.

Gangster films have dominated the silver screen for almost as long as movies have existed. Stemming from the crime film genre, gangster films typically focus on organized crime while following the rise and fall of criminals. The criminal's actions are heavily explored, and the film often expresses the effects that their actions have on society. Gritty violence goes hand in hand with the theme of "crime doesn't pay" and with justice prevalently taking over the theme. Martin Scorsese is no stranger to the genre, creating numerous gangster films throughout different periods of history. After creating such great gangster films as Goodfellas and Gangs of New York, Scorsese went on to remake a successful Hong Kong film called Infernal Affairs.
The remake of Infernal Affairs took the core cat-and-mouse story but relocated the setting to Boston. Scorsese wanted to ground the story into some realism, so it was loosely inspired by the infamous mobster Whitey Bulger.

Which was Leonardo DiCaprio’s first big screen movie?(Photo Credit –Facebook)
In 1991, a fresh-faced Leonardo DiCaprio made his feature film debut in Critters 3, a direct-to-video sequel that took “cheesy” to a whole new level. The film followed flesh-eating alien furballs terrorizing an apartment complex, hardly the kind of cinematic milestone most actors dream about.
DiCaprio played Josh, the stepson of a corrupt landlord, caught in the middle of the chaos. But let’s be real: Critters 3 had one true claim to fame. As one critic bluntly put it, “Its claim to fame is that it marked Leonardo DiCaprio’s film debut, but aside from that Trivial Pursuit tidbit, there’s not much to recommend this subpar entry.”
The Critters franchise had some success early on, despite being a clear Gremlins knockoff. The first two films gained a cult following and even managed decent Rotten Tomatoes audience scores.

Martin Scorsese is making his next film, starring Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson, for 20th Century Studios. More here.
A veteran director of mob movies he may be, but Martin Scorsese isn’t yet done making films about charasmatic criminals. Set to add to a body of work that already includes Goodfellas, Gangs Of New York, Casino, The Departed and The Irishman, the filmmaker’s next project will be a Hawaii-set crime thriller that stars Emily Blunt, Dwayne Johnson and Leonardo DiCaprio.
Naturally, interest is high for the film, with Netflix said to be the frontrunner at one stage. But it looks like the Silicon Valley streamer has once again been trumped by a traditional movie studio when it comes to securing a major project. If we were to speculate, we’d be wondering just how important the guarantee of a proper theatrical run for the project was in making...

Is today Leonardo DiCaprio Day? I ask because DiCaprio is at the center of another massive Hollywood headline after returning to YouTube to share the trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film, One Battle After Another. According to reports, Disney is close to sealing a deal for Martin Scorsese‘s latest drama, with Leonardo DiCaprio, Emily Blunt, and Dwayne Johnson leading the cast. The untitled project, set in Hawaii, has the following description: Imagine Robert De Niro’s Goodfellas’ Jimmy the Gent character, but as a ruthless Hawaiian crime boss, also based on a real figure, who battled encroaching rivals for control of organized crime in Hawaii.
In Deadline‘s exclusive report, the outlet describes Scorsese’s latest project in vivid detail. The pitch, written by Nick Bilton, includes crime of all kinds, with shady characters operating a syndicate from outlandish places. It “focuses on a turbulent time on...

MGM+ has made it official and ordered The Westies crime drama from Narcos creator Chris Brancato.
The Peaky Blinders-esque period drama series about fearsome Irish gangs in New York will start production in Toronto in July 2025. Martin Scorsese captured a similar storyline in his 2002 film Gangs of New York, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Daniel Day-Lewis and followed the rise of Irish gangs and their power struggles with other criminal groups in the area around the Five Points neighborhood of lower Manhattan.
But rather than set The Westies in the late 19th century, like Scorsese’s film, Brancato has chosen a 1980s New York City backdrop for his MGM+ crime drama.
“We are thrilled to bring our viewers another provocative, exciting crime drama from the incomparable vision of Chris Brancato,” Michael Wright, head of MGM+ said in a statement on Tuesday. “Chris is a gifted showrunner who builds his stories...

Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas depicts the crime lifestyle perfectly, despite an expert calling out one casting choice that upset his father. The legendary director has explored the mob milieu many times over his illustrious career, starring in 1973 with his third movie, Mean Streets, which was also Scorsese's first of several collaborations with Robert De Niro. Though Mean Streets is considered by many to be one of the greatest gangster movies ever made, Scorsese's Mafia magnum opus might be Goodfellas, which is widely regarded as one of the greatest movies ever made.
Over the years, Scorsese has explored many aspects of the Mafia and gangster lifestyle in Raging Bull, Casino, and Gangs of New York. However, it was his exploration of the Irish Mob in Boston, The Departed, that won Best Picture and earned Scorsese his only Academy Award for Best Director. Daniel Day-Lewis is a veritable screen legend, rightly regarded as one of the greatest actors of all time. Though famously picky with his roles, only appearing in one movie every few movies, and now mostly retired, Day-Lewis's filmography is still formidable. It very much leans toward drama, including classics like My Left Foot, Gangs of New York, and There Will Be Blood.

Jamie Campbell Bower and Eddie Marsan are about to get in the ring...of power, that is. The acclaimed British actors are no strangers to fantasy and genre fare, given the former's time on Stranger Things and the latter's time appearing in, well, seemingly everything else, but neither have played in the acclaimed and beloved universe of author J. R. R. Tolkien — until now.
That's right, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has upped the star power ante in season three, tapping Bower and Marsan to join the cast for the series' next installment. The show is currently in pre-production in England, working out of a new home in Shepperton Studios. Best Director gets more attention at the Oscars, but this millennium has shown the writing categories are potentially more important. In the past 15 years Argo (2012), Green Book (2018), and Coda (2021) won Best Picture without directing noms — but no film since Titanic (1997) has won without a writing nom. That could be good news for many of this year's nominees for Best Adapted Screenplay. Four of the five are also up for the top prize. Here is our breakdown of the race as it stands today.
SEEHow Kieran Culkin could end this 12-year Oscar streak Frontrunner: Conclave, by Peter Straughan

Since the nominations were announced on Jan. 23, the Oscar Best Actor race had narrowed into a two-man battle between a pair of two-time nominees: Adrien Brody of The Brutalist (who won his first time out) and Timothée Chalamet of A Complete Unknown (who didn't). It would be a significant upset if either of these actors didn't cart off the trophy. But shockers happen, as Brody himself knows all too well. If that happens, three other nominees are hoping to pounce: Ralph Fiennes for Conclave, Colman Domingo for Sing Sing, and Sebastian Stan for The Apprentice.
Let's analyze the Best Actor contest in greater depth.
The Frontrunner: Adrien Brody
Before diving into Brody's Brutalist bona fides, let's climb into the way-back machine to look at the actor's upset win in the category in 2003 for The Pianist.

Timothée Chalamet had a mic-drop moment at the SAG Awards on Sunday, singing his way to a Best Actor win for playing Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown.
Chalamet, who was in second place in the Gold Derby odds, beat Adrien Brody (The Brutalist), Daniel Craig (Queer), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), and Ralph Fiennes (Conclave).
"I know the classiest thing would be to downplay the effort that went into this role and how much this means to me," Chalamet said during his acceptance speech. "The truth is that this was five-and-a-half years of my life. I poured everything that I had into playing this incomparable artist, Mr. Bob Dylan — a true American hero. It was the honor of a lifetime to play him."
After thanking his costars, Chalamet proudly proclaimed, "I know we're in a subjective business, but the truth is, I'm in pursuit of greatness. I know people don't usually talk like that,...

When it comes to British historical dramas, very few can be said to have matched the popularity attained by Peaky Blinders, so it’s understandable why fans were excited for series creator Steven Knight’s latest venture, A Thousand Blows. Set in the underworld of late 19th century London, the six-episode series focuses on the real-life all-female thieves gang, The Forty Elephants, and highlights the transition period of boxing. A Thousand Blows is engaging enough to keep its viewers hooked throughout, and aside from a solid script and the authentic recreation of historical settings, a colorful ensemble of characters proved to be the major reason behind that. With a second season already greenlit, there is a possibility of the series gaining a cult following in the near future, and the continuation of a proper arc of the players involved will be something to look forward to.

For decades, Leonardo DiCaprio has kept Hollywood on its toes by delivering the perfect blend of tabloid-worthy bad-boy charm and being idolized as a timeless movie star of classic and legendary films. His rise to fame following James Cameron’s 1997 opus Titanic was not in vain as the actor then kept proving himself as the industry’s next figurative golden goose.

A Hawaii-set crime thriller, directed by Martin Scorsese and featuring an all-star cast, will see the filmmaker return to the mobster genre once again.
Reports of a new Martin Scorsese project have surfaced, and it looks as though the filmmaker is making a crime caper. According to Deadline, the veteran director will add a new movie about mobsters to a body of work that already includes Goodfellas, Gangs Of New York, Casino, The Departed and The Irishman.
This time around, Hawaii is the location, and Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson, stars of Jungle Cruise, and A24’s upcoming Mma drama, The Smashing Machine, reportedly brought the project to regular collaborators Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio. The pair must have liked what they heard because the whole package of story, director and stars is now being shopped around Hollywood and won’t be short of an interested party or two, we’d imagine.

Martin Scorsese is lining up a major new project, and it’s already shaping up to be one of the hottest packages in Hollywood. The legendary director is set to helm a crime drama starring Dwayne Johnson, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Emily Blunt. The film, currently untitled, will be written by journalist and author Nick Bilton and is inspired by real events.
The story focuses on a powerful and ruthless Hawaiian crime boss in the 1960s and 70s, a figure reminiscent of Robert De Niro’s Jimmy the Gent from Goodfellas. This mob leader fought to establish dominance in Hawaii’s criminal underworld, battling mainland syndicates and corporate interests while striving to protect his homeland.
The film is described as a sweeping crime saga, marking another venture into the gangster genre for Scorsese, who previously explored similar themes in The Departed and Goodfellas.

The Hawaii-set crime caper, which is currently being shopped to studios and streamers, is drawing comparisons in the industry to “The Departed” and “Goodfellas.” Even in spirit, there are no deals in place and the viability of the project depends on a distributor, according to multiple sources familiar with the package, but the untitled drama is set to be written by author and journalist Nick Bilton, who helmed the 2021 HBO documentary “Fake Famous.”

Exclusive: The hot package in town is a pitch for a Martin Scorsese-directed untitled drama that would star Dwayne Johnson, Leonardo DiCaprio and Emily Blunt.
The thumbnail description: Imagine Robert De Niro’s Jimmy the Gent character from Goodfellas, but as a ruthless Hawaiian crime boss, based on a real figure, who battled encroaching rivals for control of organized crime in Hawaii.
To be written by Nick Bilton, the film focuses on a turbulent time on the island paradise when an aspiring mob boss battled rival crime factions to wrest control of the underworld of the Hawaiian islands. It was a bloody battle, the kind of terrain Scorsese covered in both Goodfellas and The Departed. In 1960s and 70s Hawaii, this formidable and charismatic mob boss rises to build the islands’ most powerful criminal empire, waging a brutal war against mainland corporations and rival syndicates while fighting to preserve his ancestral land.

Throughout his acclaimed career on-screen, Liam Neeson has rightfully become a household name. Not only has he appeared in countless stand-alone hits like Love Actually and Gangs of New York, but he's also starred in several popular film franchises. Looking at his presence across production sizes, fans might think there's no part too big or too small for the Irish actor to play. However, it seems there was one role in the past that the Taken actor wasn't so taken with.
When director Peter Jackson was casting characters for his now-celebrated Lord of the Ringstrilogy, Neeson was being considered for Boromir, the gallant warrior of Gondor. Ultimately, he decided to turn down the part. Considering the scale and legacy of the Lord of the Rings' universe as well as Jackson's renowned filmography, it seems odd that anyone would pass on such a massive opportunity. Well, his reasoning is just as strange.

In 2007, Martin Scorsese won his first and only Best Director Academy Award for his work on The Departed. Most sensible people would agree that The Departed is not the best of Scorsese's films, but few would be angry that a director of his caliber has an Oscar under his belt. After all, Scorsese had previously received Best Director nominations for The Aviator, Gangs of New York, Goodfellas, The Last Temptation of Christ and Raging Bull.
