Jim Jefferies Says His Short-Lived FX Sitcom ‘Legit’ Is Still His Favorite Thing He’s Ever Done
Image
Over the past decade, Australian-American comedian Jim Jefferies has climbed the heights of stand-up comedy. Yet, despite all his comedic success, one past project still feels unfinished to him: his short-lived FX sitcom Legit. The semi-autobiographical series starred Jefferies as a fictionalized version of himself who lives with his two best friends, Steve Nugent and Steve’s brother Billy, who has a severe case of muscular dystrophy and uses a wheelchair. In its premiere episode, Jim and Steve take Billy to a brothel — a real-life event that made its way into Jefferies’ stand-up and then into Legit (which was the case for much of the show’s stories).

While Legit never found a big audience, the show was beloved by critics, who praised it as being both darkly funny and surprisingly tender. The darkly funny part of that equation was familiar to anyone who knew Jefferies’ raunchy stand-up act, but...

Wtf Happened to Road Trip – Does the Todd Phillips-directed teen sex comedy still have gas?
Image
Every once in a while, a movie makes so much money that it totally shakes up the film industry. This instance is especially true when a genre many considered dead and buried comes along and makes some serious cash. This rarity happened in a big way back in 1999 when American Pie, a movie that cost $11 million, made $235 million worldwide. Think about it – the biggest star in the film was Eugene Levy. More than that – it was a teen sex comedy. That genre played out in the early eighties when Porky’s was such a big hit that every studio decided to make a sex comedy, and pretty much all of them tanked – especially the multiple Porky‘s sequels. Teen sex comedies were replaced by John Hughes’s brand of more thoughtful teen comedies, only for that genre to fall off as well. A year before, Sony made a John Hughes-style teen comedy,...

Looney Tunes Fans Get More Heartbreaking News
Image
It hasn't been the best time recently to be a big fan of Looney Tunes. After the classic cartoons were scrubbed from their streaming home at Max, more unfortunate news has been revealed with a piece of Looney Tunes history set to be destroyed.

Per Deadline, Building 131 on the Warner Bros. lot is set to be torn down. Located in the far corner of the Forest Lawn Drive lot, the building was where Looney Tunes was once housed, serving as an important part of the popular brand's history. Reportedly, the building getting razed was not a recent decision and has been in the planning stages for some time, as staffers had been discouraged from parking close by.

Meanwhile, the teardown process is now expected to start imminently and as early as next week. It's also noted that the building will not be replaced once it's demolished. As for why the building has to go,...

Todd Phillips' First Movie Led To A 20-Year Ban On Filming At The University Of Georgia
Image
Last year, I had the good fortune of visiting the set of Blumhouse's upcoming horror movie "The Woman in the Yard." It took place in a college town called Athens, Georgia, about an hour away from Atlanta, give or take. What I expected to encounter during that visit was some behind-the-scenes knowledge of Jaume Collet-Serra's return to the horror genre. What I didn't expect to discover was how Todd Phillips was responsible for a near-total ban on filming at the University of Georgia that lasted more than 20 years.

Phillips is best known as the director of DC's $1 billion smash hit "Joker" from 2019. Before that, he was known best for his work in R-rated comedies like "The Hangover." His first foray into the genre was 2000's "Old School," which served as his feature directorial debut. He'd previously directed a documentary about Phish called "Bittersweet Motel" and an unaired HBO documentary called "Frat House,...

Eurotrip: Michelle Trachtenberg was great in this fun 2000s comedy
Image
Despite having starred in many of the biggest movies of the last thirty years, including Good Will Hunting, Saving Private Ryan, the Jason Bourne films, The Martian and many more, Matt Damon once said that the movie fans most often quote to him is Eurotrip, with fans frequently approaching him, singing “Scotty Doesn’t Know.” A notable flop when it came out in 2004, thanks to DVD and streaming, Eurotrip went on to become a cult classic, and one that’s suddenly become a lot more bittersweet due to the tragic passing of one of its stars, Michelle Trachtenberg, who died recently at only thirty-nine years old. While mostly known for Harriet the Spy, and for her roles on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Gossip Girl, many, us here at JoBlo included, are fond of her charming performance in this underrated flick, which might have been considered just another comedy back in 2004, but in our current,...

Image
TV personality Gino D’Acampo, best known for his work on ITV’s This Morning and hosting numerous shows with Gordon Ramsay and Fred Sirieix, has been accused of inappropriate conduct and intimidating behavior by more than a dozen people.

An ITV news investigation, which broadcast earlier tonight, spoke with multiple people who have worked with him in the past and described D’Acampo making sexualized remarks that made them feel highly uncomfortable, as they detailed incidents that go back many years.

One woman said in 2011 D’Acampo told her he would “like to turn me over and f*** me up the a*** against the kitchen counter.” Another said that on a shoot he opened the door to his room wearing only boxer shorts before making reference to his penis. A third sent in a statement saying D’Acampo said to someone: “If you don’t get me a Cornetto I will f*** your girlfriend.

‘Omaha’ Review: This Year’s Sundance Road Trip Movie is Depressingly Impressive
Image
There are many longstanding traditions in this entertainment industry of ours, and one of them — not necessarily the greatest, but certainly one of them — is the Sundance Road Trip Movie. Independent films about families and/or mismatched associates on a lengthy trek around the country or the world, in which a series of adventures and/or misadventures usually prove that the journey was just as important as the destination. Sometimes it’s funny, sometimes it’s sad, but always it screams “Sundance.”

Not every Sundance has a Sundance Road Trip Movie, but the festival just wouldn’t be the same without films like “Little Miss Sunshine,” “Paris, Texas,” “Y tu mamá también,” “Smoke Signals,” “Tumbleweeds,” “The Motorcycle Diaries,” “A Real Pain,” “The Puffy Chair,” “Wristcutters: A Love Story,” “The End of the Tour,” “Will & Harper” or “The Brave Little Toaster.” And now, joining that legacy is Cole Webley’s “Omaha,...

3 reasons Star Trek: Section 31 can defy expectations and be a hit
Image
Star Trek: Section 31 launches soon. On Jan. 24, 2025 to be exact. The film will star Michelle Yeoh as Philippa Georgiou, in what may very likely be the last role of her career with Star Trek. Yeoh is more in-demand than ever before and it's very likely that Section 31 brings an end to her Trekking ways. Especially since they made this film off of the back of a canceled television idea that Yeoh was set to star in.

Same premise, just less expensive to make a film than 10-mini films.

This may work out well for Paramount+, as fans have not received the new film with the warmest of expectations. That doesn't mean the film will fail, though. It has some stuff going for it that may cater to more casual fans of Star Trek, or sci-fi as a whole. So with that, here are three reasons we think Section 31 will be a hit.

Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis Teamed Up for 'Due Date,' Which is Now a Streaming Hit
Image
It was November 2010 when Due Date opened, and both Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis were riding high. Iron Man (2008) and Iron Man 2 (2010) were massive hits and launched Downey Jr.'s career into the stratosphere. Meanwhile, Galifianakis was coming off The Hangover and was himself a rising star. Add in Hangover director Todd Phillips helming Due Date, and it had the makings of a surefire hit. And it was one, albeit modestly at the box office.

Produced on a budget of $65 million (not including marketing costs), Due Date earned only $211 million at the worldwide box office, nearly splitting its domestic and international hauls. One reason is it may not have done better is because it opened against box office hit Megamind; the other is the overall reviews. Both critics and audiences weren't fond of the film, with 39% and 52% at Rotten Tomatoes, respectively. Due Date opened to an anemic $32.6 million in North America,...

“It’s hard to argue with 30 million people”: Making ‘Joker’ Was Todd Phillips’ Revenge Against Woke Culture That Has Allegedly Killed Movies Like ‘Hangover’
Image
Filmmaker Todd Phillips rose to fame with his work on The Hangover trilogy. Despite extensively working in the comedy genre, Phillips shocked everyone with his take on the DC Comics Clown Prince of Crime in 2019’s Joker. The film starring Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role was a critical and commercial success.

Todd Phillips directed comedies before 2019’s Joker (Credit: Warner Bros).

In an interview, Phillips discussed the genesis of the Academy Award-winning DC movie. At the same time, Phillips criticized the current state of the comedy genre primarily because of the rise of woke culture. As a result, Phillips was driven to make Joker because of his disdain for the woke culture, and here is what he had to say about it.

Todd Phillips stopped making comedy movies because of woke culture

Filmmaker Todd Phillips made his directorial debut with the 2000 comedy Road Trip. He later worked on The Hangover trilogy,...

"Ended Up Being About 70% Accurate": Todd Phillips' $86M True Crime Story Movie Gets Glowing Review From The Real Arms Trader (But Clarifies Which Events Were Fictionalized)

Todd Phillips is one of the most successful comedy movie directors of all time. The filmmaker began his career by directing comedies such as Road Trip, Old School, and Starsky & Hutch, and then helmed 2009's The Hangover, which instantly became a comedy sensation. This led to Phillips making two more Hangover movies, completing the trilogy. After the massive success of the Hangover movies, Phillips had a lot more freedom to take on whatever projects he wanted.

This led to him directing Joker in 2019. Joker was another massive success for Phillips, earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Director. This year, Phillips also directed the much more controversial sequel Joker: Folie à Deux. However, before he directed either of the Joker movies, Phillips directed a dark comedy crime film in 2016, which was his first film after The Hangover Part III.

What Happened to Todd Phillips?
Image
A young film student contacts an artist to design a poster for his new documentary about a musician. The film student was named Todd Phillips, the musician was named Gg Allin and the artist was named John Wayne Gacy… who happens to be an infamous serial killer known for dressing like a clown. This artistic contribution earned Gacy an “executive producer” credit and gave the documentary some dark twisted notoriety – not that Gg Allin needed any. That’s right: the director of Joker got his start thanks to a real-life serial killing clown. Director Todd Phillips went on to bring us some of the most interesting and hilarious films of the past few decades. He was pumping out groundbreaking blockbusters left and right for years, surprising us all with classics like The Hangover and Joker and instantly disappointing us all with their sequels. But has Todd Phillips sung his last great cinematic song?...

The Hangover 4: We Aren’t Sure if Todd Phillips Should Return for the Sequel Despite Bradley Cooper’s Desperation
Image
It would be weird for fans to see Todd Phillips back to direct the Wolfpack members on another adventure gone wrong. The Hangover was a film that worked on a particular formula, that has been used over and over again in its sequels and other similar comedy films. While Bradley Cooper may want to go down his comedy roots again with a fourth film, it just doesn’t make any sense at this point.

A still from Todd Phillips’ The Hangover | Credits: Legendary Pictures

The original film starred Cooper, Ed Helms, Zack Galifianakis, and Justin Bartha as the four protagonists who always end up in a hangover mess when they get together. While the first film became the highest-grossing R-rated comedy at the time, the two sequels failed to live up to the original.

The Best Todd Phillips Movies, Ranked
Image
Todd Phillips made his directing and writing debut on a feature film with Road Trip back in 2000, for which he also has an acting credit. From there, the director has gone on to create some of the best comedies that have stuck around since their initial release. His usual genre took a slight turn with War Dogs, although the film is still laced with humor.

However, Phillips really showed the extension of his abilities with the thriller film Joker in 2019, which he also wrote and directed. The recent release of Joker: Folie Deux is Phillips' latest work, once again taking on the reimagining of the classic Batman villain. With plenty of other movies for fans of his to explore, the following list lays out some of Phillips' best work.

Does Joker 2 Have a Post Credits Scene? Folie a Deux Ending, Explained
Image
This article includes major spoilers for Joker: Folie Deux,

Todd Philips, the director of Joker: Folie Deux was initially known for laugh-out-loud movies like Old School, Road Trip, Due Date, and The Hangover. He made some of the best comedies of an era not too long ago. After churning out a trilogy for The Hangover franchise, he moved on to other films like War Dogs, changing the content and tone away from silly and more toward serious. In 2019, Philips released his dark take on the clown prince, called Joker. It was a stand-alone story, only borrowing the lore from the Batman world, but not working within it or extending previous Batman storylines. There was no Batman, just the darkness of Gotham breeding chaos and murderers like Arthur Fleck.

Arthur Fleck, played by Joaquin Phoenix, portrays a version of the Joker who was yet to be visited on film. Phoenix's portrayal...

'The Story Is Told': Joker: Folie Deux Director Explains Why Joker 3 Is Unlikely to Happen
Image
Joker: Folie Deux director Todd Phillips increasingly believes the upcoming sequel will end Arthur Fleck's story. The acclaimed helmer suggests Joker 3 is unlikely after a realization he had when filming wrapped on the second installment.

Speaking with Collider during a Q&a following an early Folie Deux screening, Phillips explained the mindset he, his cast and crew had throughout the creative process of the sequel. While Phillips and lead actor Joaquin Phoenix felt there were more boundaries to test with the central character and narrative after Joker, the director recalled how the final day of principal photography was tenuous for all involved and suggested Folie Deux marks a suitable end to the franchise.

Joker 3 | Director Todd Phillips downplays chance of another film
Todd Phillips
Director Todd Phillips insists he won’t be making Joker 3, and that Joker: Folie A Deux will bring his take on the story to an end.

Director Todd Phillips is back on the promotional trail, as the release date looms for his high-profile sequel, Joker: Folie A Deux. The sequel to the billion dollar, Oscar-winning Joker movie brings Joaquin Phoenix back to the title role, joined this time by Lady Gaga as well.

Phillips sprung to profile off the back of his comedy work, with movies such as The Hangover trilogy and Road Trip. The jump to Joker was a surprise, but there’s little denying it paid off. Still, in a new conversation with Variety, Phillips has been suggesting that those looking for a Joker 3 are likely to be disappointed.

“It was fun to play in this sort of sandbox for two movies, but I think we’ve said...

“I’m addicted to risk”: Todd Phillips Stands Behind His Most Dangerous Decision for Joker 2 That Many DC Fans Still Claim Could Sink the Movie
Image
Fans of DC Comics were offered a treat in October, 2019, with Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker taking the world by storm. The movie set the town ablaze (quite literally), with a performance that was so gritty and macabre that many would begin to doubt that it fell in the same genre as Avengers: Endgame. But director Todd Phillips’ gambit paid off. And that seems to have emboldened him to take a greater risk with the sequel – one which could even spell its doom.

Todd Phillips Reveals Joker 3 Isn’t Happening: “We’ve Said What We Wanted to Say”
Image
Fans of Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck/Joker shouldn’t get their hopes up for Joker 3. In a new Variety cover story, Joker: Folie à Deux director Todd Phillips effectively ended any speculation of another sequel.

“It was fun to play in this sort of sandbox for two movies, but I think we’ve said what we wanted to say in this world,” Phillips shared. Instead, he would like to go back to making comedy movies.

Sharing his belief that “people really want comedies right now,” Phillips explained, “The trailer for Joker 2 sort of sums things up when it says, ‘What the world needs now is love.’ But I would go farther: We could use a good laugh, too.”

However, this doesn’t automatically mean Phillips is cutting off his partnership with Phoenix. The filmmaker admitted, “I’d love to keep working with Joaquin but on a comedy, because...

Todd Phillips Tells All on Making ‘Joker 2’: Musical Numbers, Method Acting and Joaquin Phoenix’s Broadway Dream That Started It All
Image
It all started with Joaquin Phoenix’s dream.

Shortly before shooting wrapped on “Joker,” Phoenix confessed to Todd Phillips, the filmmaker who had reimagined Batman’s greatest enemy as an aspiring stand-up with a Travis Bickle complex, that he wasn’t ready to leave the character behind. When he fell asleep one night, Phoenix had a vision of Arthur Fleck, the man behind Joker’s clown makeup, performing onstage, telling jokes and singing.

“Todd was in the wings talking to me through a headset,” Phoenix remembers. “I woke up feeling elated and called him, hoping he’d want to do a show with me.”

Even before “Joker” went on to earn more than $1 billion in 2019, the pair were already thinking about a follow-up. They discussed the prospect of taking their act to Broadway, at least until reality set in.

“When we started really thinking about it, we realized it takes...

How Much of Todd Phillips' 'War Dogs' Really Happened?
Image
While he was previously best known for his work on R-Rated comedies, Todd Phillips shocked audiences with his dark take on the iconic Batman antagonist Joker. The gritty origin tale was inspired by the Martin Scorsese classics Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy, and earned significant awards attention that was unusual for a comic book film. Joker received eleven Academy Award nominations, with Joaquin Phoenix taking home the trophy for Best Actor. It was a surprising move for Phillips, who was previously best known for comedic work including Road Trip, Due Date, and The Hangover trilogy.

Duane Eddy, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Guitarist, Dead at 86
Image
Duane Eddy, the legendary guitarist who was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, has passed away at the age of 86. He died of cancer on Tuesday (April 30th), surrounded by family members at Williamson Health hospital in Franklin, Tennessee.

Eddy is considered the most commercially successful instrumental musician in the history of rock ‘n’ roll, thanks in large part to his signature tunes like “Rebel-‘Rouser,” “Peter Gunn,” and “Because They’re Young.” By 1963, he had sold an estimated 12 million records.

The guitarist was known for his twangy sound and his collaborative work with producer Lee Hazlewood. His extensive album discography spanned from his 1958 debut, Have ‘Twangy’ Guitar Will Travel, through 2011’s Road Trip.

John Fogerty once dubbed Eddy the “the first rock ‘n’ roll guitar god.” His 1987 album, Duane Eddy & The Rebels, truly showed his influence, as it featured guest appearances by Fogerty, George Harrison, Paul McCartney,...

Duane Eddy, King of the Twangy Guitar, Dead at 86

Duane Eddy, one of rock’s first guitar heroes and an idol of George Harrison, Jeff Beck, John Fogerty, Dan Auerbach, and many other guitar-slingers who followed, died Sunday at his home in Franklin, Tennessee. He was 86. A source close to the family confirmed Eddy’s death to Rolling Stone.

Released in 1958, Eddy’s “Rebel-’Rouser” wasn’t the first instrumental hit, but it was one of the most arresting. Arriving just a few years into the birth of rock & roll, “Rebel-’Rouser” announced that the raucous new genre was...
