Dwayne Johnson movies: 10 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
The road to movie stardom for Dwayne Johnson is one of the unlikeliest in recent memory. A third-generation professional wrestler known the world over as "The Rock," Johnson nabbed a supporting role in 2001's "The Mummy Returns" and made such an impression that he starred in a successful stand-alone film, "The Scorpion King," the very next year.

As his film career progressed, it became evident that, despite his success in action films, Johnson had a distinct flair for comedy, which he began to show off in such films as "Be Cool" (2005), "Central Intelligence" (2016), "Moana" (2016) and in his biggest-grossing film, "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" (2017). One of the most recent was "Jungle Cruise" (2021) for Disney.

But it's in high-concept action cinema that Johnson has found his greatest success, especially after hopping aboard the highly lucrative "Fast and Furious" franchise. He even got his own spin-off adventure, "Hobbs & Shaw" (2019), which teamed...

According to a poll conducted by Fandango, Jurassic World: Rebirth is the most anticipated movie of summer 2025, based on a survey of 3,500 ticket buyers. Alongside Blumhouse, the film is also being produced by Cronin’s own Doppelgängers banner. James Wan, Jason Blum, and John Keville are set to serve as the producers.

Dwayne Johnson Patiently Tried to Convince Selena Gomez He Was Not a Plumber in Their 1st Meeting On Screen
Image
Dwayne Johnson continues to be an evolutionary force in WWE. Ever since his very beginning, despite a few bumps hither and yon, Johnson ensured that he was putting the right steps in place to carry forth his legacy. It all started with Rocky Maivia and from thereon, the popularity kept on climbing.

Despite Maivia being not so popular among the fans, Dwayne Johnson turned into The Rock, an arrogant heel that connected well with the fans. From there, he became a central figure in the Attitude Era, producing countless remarkable rivalries for the WWE Universe to savor. However, the world of pro wrestling wasn’t the end for Dwayne Johnson. His natural mic skills and ability to captivate the audience were what left the fans on the edge of their seats.

13 worst CGI moments in the MCU, ranked
Image
There are fewer spectacles more worthy of the big screen than those which come from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The sheer scale and grandeur of the MCU films have captivated audiences for the better part of two decades, bringing the most ambitious events from the pages of the Marvel Comics to life in thrilling sequences, complete with non-stop action and impressive visuals.

An MCU film manages to captivate you completely with its world and characters. For a moment, you forget that people can't really turn big and green or summon a magical hammer with the power to control thunder. The superhero fantasy is brought to life ever so slightly, and everything seems so real... until a bad CGI moment comes and completely takes you out of the experience.

More and more of these immersion-breaking scenes made their way onto the big screen (and the small one too!) as the MCU grew over the years.

The Weirdest Marvel Movie Knockoffs, Ranked
Image
Marvel has created some of the most iconic superheroes in comic book history, so it was only a matter of time before mockbusters manifested. Whether it's Spider-Man, Captain America, or even Daredevil, filmmakers have long attempted to cash in on these legendary characters; sometimes as blatant knockoffs, other times as affectionate homages, and on occasion as baffling hybrids of both. With their low budgets and borderline intellectual property theft, most mockbusters are easy to dismiss as shameless cash grabs. However, even when a film is just Iron Man with a fraction of the budget, there is usually something to admire; whether it's the creative marketing needed to dodge Disney’s legal team, the bizarre reinventions that arise when filmmakers have not actually seen the movie they are copying, or just the sheer audacity to release something so wildly off base.

Superheroes have always existed in a world of contested copyrights and creative overlap.

Ridley Scott’s 2017 Film Finally Settled the Best Wrestler-Turned-Actor Debate
Image
One of the best science fiction movies of the last decade, Denis Villeneuve’s incredible Blade Runner 2049 laid the foundation for the fantastic director to continue down the path of excellent sci-fi filmmaking, culminating in his two Academy Award-nominated adaptations of Frank Herbert's seminal novel Dune. The film features some of the most stunning cinematography, fantastic music and sound design and patiently brilliant storytelling in recent cinema history, continuing to chronicle the evolution of robotic artificial intelligence and the implications that these life forms would have on a futuristic world.

One thing that stands above all in Blade Runner 2049 is the performances, pairing legendary actors like Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford and Robin Wright with relative newcomers like Ana de Armas, Mackenzie Davis and Sylvia Hoeks to create one of the most stacked casts in recent films. But arguably the stand-out performance in the film comes from wrestler turned actor Dave Bautista,...

Tom Cruise at an event for Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Top Gun 3 is still active, but not ready yet
Tom Cruise at an event for Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Tom Cruise will be returning for Top Gun 3 still, but development continues, a year after the new sequel was first confirmed.

We’re coming up to the third birthday of Top Gun: Maverick, a blockbuster that’s unlikely to ever be dislodged as the most successful of Tom Cruise’s career. In those three years since, director Joseph Kosinski has directed F1, which is finally set to arrive this summer. As for Cruise, he’s been working with writer and director Christopher McQuarrie on a pair of Mission: Impossible movies.

For the last year though, it’s been known that Paramount Pictures has a Top Gun 3 in development, and that Tom Cruise is set to play Maverick for a third time.

We’re some way away from James Bond development time territory here, but what’s interesting is there’s been no immediate rush to get Top Gun 3 before cameras.

Why Rachel Weisz Wasn’t in The Mummy 3
Image
The Mummy and The Mummy Returns are beloved films from the late '90s and early '00s. The adventures of Rick O'Connell and his Egyptologist wife, Evy, delight and entertain fans decades later. The third installment, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, isn't quite as well-regarded.

The third film in The Mummy franchise suffered for a couple of reasons, but one that fans are quick to point out is that Rachel Weisz, who played Evy, didn't return to reprise her role. Instead, the character of Evy was recast and portrayed by Maria Bello. There are a couple of rumors floating around as to why Weisz was absent from Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

The Mummy's Best Remake Is Secretly Another Universal Monsters Horror Movie
Image
Quick Links1999's The Mummy Was an Amalgam RemakeThe Best Mummy Movie Was Essentially a Vampire MovieThese Horror Monsters Lack Their Own Definitive Tropes

The iconic horror movie The Mummyhelped put the ancient burial concept on the map in terms of horror tropes, and the series is most known for the 1999 remake starring Brendan Fraser. This was one of the few remakes that actually surpassed the original, and it's so far the best use of mummies on film. Interestingly enough, however, it bore more resemblance to another horror movie concept.

Stephen Sommers' The Mummy was, at a conceptual level, a vampire movie in terms of how it portrayed its title monster. From his mannerisms to his powers, Imhotep had more in common with various versions of Dracula than anything from Ancient Egypt. This goes to show just how influential vampires are as an idea, and how mummies don't have nearly...

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008) – What Happened to This Horror Movie?

Brendan Fraser saved the world from mummies twice. How can someone follow up success like that? By saving the world from mummies a third time! When he signed on for another Mummy sequel, he was working with a new director and new writers. Some of his co-stars were recast. Some were absent. But his task remained the same: stop the rampage of a power-hungry walking corpse. That’s what he set out to do in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor… and it’s time to figure out What Happened to This Horror Movie.

Fraser played treasure hunter Rick O’Connell in the 1999 reboot of the Universal Monsters classic The Mummy and its 2001 sequel The Mummy Returns. Both movies were written and directed by Stephen Sommers – but Sommers had no intention of directing a third Mummy film. After making the second one, he was ready to work on smaller projects.

Dwayne Johnson Gets Transformed Into A Realistic Version Of Moana's CGI Maui In Deeply Upsetting Art Video
Image
Dwayne Johnson remains one of the most recognizable actors working in Hollywood today, and is widely known for starring in and producing family-friendly fare. Getting his start as a wrestler in the WWE, Johnson's first major movie role was as the Scorpion King in The Mummy Returns (2001), a role he used to springboard into other films like The Scorpion King (2002), The Rundown (2003), and Walking Tall (2004).

Johnson continued his tough-guy acting persona throughout the late 2000s and into the 2010s, appearing in movies like Faster (2010), Snitch (2013), and San Andreas (2015), as well as several Fast & Furious movies. Though he continues to play more serious characters occasionally, the recent years of Johnson's career have seen him taking on a number of lighter and more comedic roles, particularly in four-quadrant movies for the whole family. When it comes to beloved family fare, there's perhaps no greater Johnson movie than his 2016 animated adventure.

Red One's New Streaming Record Continues A Great Dwayne Johnson Trend That Signifies A New Phase Of His Career
Image
Red One has broken a streaming record that may prove that Dwayne Johnson's career is undergoing a major shift. Johnson is a star who is very familiar with shifts in his career, as he originally became famous as a WWE wrestler under the moniker "The Rock." After taking on a role as the antagonist in the 2001 adventure sequel The Mummy Returns, he began to transition toward acting, and he has become a major movie star with many blockbuster movies and franchises under his belt, including the new Jumanji movies, the Fast Saga, the Moana franchise, Rampage, and more.

However, his new Christmas action-comedy underperformed both critically and commercially. On Rotten Tomatoes, it earned a dismal 30% score from critics, which ties it with 2005's Be Cool as the eighth worst-rated Dwayne Johnson movie ever. Although its audience score on the platform is a Verified Hot 90%, this has not translated to success in theaters.

The Mummy | Lee Cronin to direct remake for release in 2026
Nell Fisher, Gabrielle Echols, Alyssa Sutherland, and Morgan Davies in Evil Dead Rise (2023)
Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin will helm a new Mummy film slated for release in 2026, here are the details.

The Mummy was, of course, part of the stable of classic movie monsters at Universal in the 1930s, which also included Dracula, Frankenstein and The Wolfman. Incidentally Gods And Monsters, the biopic of Frankenstein director James Whale starring Ian McKellen and Brendan Fraser, is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video and is well worth watching.

Fraser headlined the 1990s/early 2000s trilogy of Mummy films, alongside Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo and, in The Mummy Returns, Dwayne Johnson, who went on to star in spin-off The Scorpion King, which also lived on through a plethora of straight to DVD sequels. There were plans for a fourth Fraser Mummy film but, for various reasons, it never happened – we wrote about it here.

However, in the wake of Fraser’s Oscar win for The Whale,...

The 10 Best Dwayne Johnson Movies, Ranked
Image
Even though professional wrestling involves a degree of acting, the professional wrestler-to-actor pipeline hasn't been particularly smooth for most. Hulk Hogan generally found himself unable to tone down the volume and the bluster of yelling to an entire arena, and while Roddy Piper had some success with John Carpenter's "They Live," he owes it to the director being a wrestling fan.

In the '90s, wrestling began to change into its "Attitude" era, often called the Monday Night Wars, developing more adult and reality-based themes, and depending at least as much on behind-the-scenes vignettes as in-ring action. This transition required a newer, more versatile sort of performer, and none excelled at it more than Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock. It was in The Rock's charisma as both hero and villain that promoter Vince McMahon saw the potential for the World Wrestling Entertainment to gain a foothold in Hollywood, and WWE Studios,...

10 Best Wrestler Cameos In Movies, Ranked

Fans love to equate WWE programming to that of "cinema" but cinema is an entirely different beast compared to professional wrestling. That isn't to discredit professional wrestling by any means. It's live theatre, at its core, and theatre is a distant cousin to filmmaking, but nonetheless, movies present a unique challenge for in-ring competitors.

Not everyone is cut out for acting or moviemaking, wrestlers included, but those who have been able to transition their in-ring charisma into movies have always been bound for success. It may not necessarily be for a marquee leading role, but it could be for a show-stealing cameo that leads to more. After all, The Rock's small role in The Mummy 2 led to starring in The Scorpion King. He went from having tremendous WWE matches to mega-blockbusters. Which other WWE Superstars have made some notable cameos?

Lose weight, stop working out, drop “The Rock,” and never mention wrestling again. The message was clear: fit the mold, or you’re out.

But Johnson didn’t play ball. “I wasn’t gonna conform to Hollywood. Hollywood was gonna conform to me,” he later revealed. That defiance became a game-changer.

Hollywood’s cookie-cutter expectations hit Johnson hard. Studios wanted him to shed the larger-than-life persona he’d built in wrestling and blend into the industry’s leading-man blueprint. To them, “The Rock” was just baggage.

The Rundown: The Rock’s first big action film is still one of his best!
Image
It has been a long road seeing wrestling superstar The Rock evolve into the brand entertainment tycoon Dwayne Johnson of today. The hulking star has released a new Christmas adventure movie in time for the holiday season with Red One. Now, it seems like Johnson’s everywhere and he’s ingrained in pop culture. But back in the early millennium, he was still crossing over into acting and while he already had some success out of the gate, there’s one movie that was seen as his true arrival to be cinema’s next action hero. In today’s episode, we talk The Rundown and how it held up after 21 years.

The Rundown feels like the last breath of the kinds of action movies that dominated the 80s and 90s. This is the era when every movie from stars, like Stallone or Schwarzenegger, would mainly highlight their ability to fight hordes of bad guys,...

Dwayne Johnson Lands Surprising Netflix Hit Amid Holiday Box Office Ups and Downs
Image
Acclaimed actor Dwayne Johnson is the king of the box office this holiday season, recently achieving the rare feat of having two top-five films on the charts simultaneously. Amid the ups and downs his films are experiencing during their theatrical runs, Johnson gets unexpectedly good news on the streaming circuit as his widely-panned movie, Faster, finds success on Netflix.

Via Collider, Johnson's forgotten 2010 action thriller film, Faster, is now third on Netflix's Top 10 Movies chart, getting strong viewership after recently debuting on the streaming service. It's the latest critical flop from Johnson to break new ground on Netflix after his 2017 big-screen adaptation of Baywatch performed well on the streamer's chart last month. The movie which launched Johnson's acting career, The Mummy Returns, also debuted via Netflix in November.

“I didn’t watch wrestling”: Jeri Ryan Had No Idea Who Dwayne Johnson Was When He Joined Star Trek: Voyager

Actress Jeri Ryan is best known for her role as Seven of Nine in Star Trek: Voyager. She won the Saturn Award for the role twice, once while on Voyager and the second when she reprised her role in Star Trek: Picard. Ryan’s character is an ex-Borg who is adopted by the Voyager crew and joins them on the journey back.

While the Star Trek franchise has seen many present-day stars play small roles at the beginning of their careers, no one is as surprising as Dwayne Johnson. While he was still miles away from his status as a star, The Rock was reportedly already a known name in the WWF. However, Ryan was reportedly unaware of his fame when they shared the screen.

The Dwayne Johnson Film You Might Have Missed
Dwayne Johnson
Image Source: Sony Pictures Dwayne Johnson has solidified his place as one of Hollywood’s most prominent stars, boasting a career that spans over 20 years and an impressive box office total surpassing $14 billion. His rise to stardom on the big screen began in 2001 with The Mummy Returns, and since then, he’s delivered a steady stream of hits. However, even the biggest names in the industry sometimes have films that initially don’t connect with audiences. One example is the 2010 action thriller Faster. This intense, gritty film represented a shift for Johnson, stepping away from his usual blend of comedy and action. Co-starring Academy Award winner Billy Bob Thornton, Faster tells the story of an ex-con seeking revenge for his brother’s murder, systematically hunting down those responsible. While the movie didn’t make waves at the box office during its debut, it has gained a second wind on streaming platforms,...

Before Fast Five, Dwayne Johnson Appeared In This 2010 Car-Centric Crime Thriller - And It’s Now Streaming On Netflix
Image
Dwayne Johnson's 2010 car-centric crime thriller Faster is now streaming on Netflix. At this point in his acting career, people have gotten used to what they can expect from a Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson film, which has provided millions with a safe choice to watch at the theater or on various streaming services. Johnson's most recent film Red One pairs him with another monolithic Hollywood actor, Chris Evans, who has also been known to take on more predictable roles following his exit from the MCU as Captain America.

While Johnson's highly-anticipated upcoming film The Smashing Machine will offer fans a rare dramatic role for the action star, Johnson's classic thriller Faster is now streaming on Netflix. Faster was directed by George Tillman Jr., known best for Men of Honor (2000) and Notorious (2009). Despite its title, Faster was not a part of the Fast & Furious franchise which Johnson eventually joined as...

Dwayne Johnson's Faster is Streaming on Netflix from December 1
Image
Dwayne Johnson’s mostly forgotten 2010 action-thriller Faster is set to make its debut on Netflix on December 1. The film may not feature the jovial Johnson who has drawn in huge audiences with family-friendly titles like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, or his larger-than-life Fast & Furious character, but a darker, grittier Johnson seems to be just as popular. For those who aren’t interested in Johnson’s return as the voice of Maui in Moana 2, or his loud and boisterous Christmas movie Red One, then Faster’s story of revenge could be just the thing to usher in the final weeks of the year.

In Faster, Johnson’s character Jimmy Cullen aka Driver is released from prison with only one thing on his mind: to hunt down and eliminate everyone involved in his brother’s murder. While his killing spree attracts the attention of Billy Bob Thornton’s Detective Slade,...

Dwayne Johnson Sets Rare Box Office Record As 2 Of His Films Dominate The Top 5 Charts
Image
Dwayne Johnson has accomplished a rare box office feat. The star is best known as an actor in the modern era, but he got his start as a wrestler with the WWE, performing under the pseudonym The Rock. He began to transition into being a movie star with early roles in features such as 2001's The Mummy Returns, where he played a villain, a role that he reprised as the lead of the 2002 spinoff The Scorpion King.

Since then, the amount of Dwayne Johnson movies has grown to an astronomical number. Some of his major works include many of the later entries in the Fast & Furious franchise (including the spinoff Hobbs & Shaw), the DC superhero movie Black Adam, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and its sequel The Next Level, the Netflix smash hit Red Notice, and the Disney theme park attraction adaptation Jungle Cruise. What Happened to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson?
Image
You’ve probably heard the story behind the name of “Seven Bucks Productions”, and even if you haven’t, it’s a good one. After injury derailed his NFL chances, and he failed to latch on in the Cfl, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, with not much else besides the $7 in his pocket. He returned home where, despite his father’s storied wrestling career, there was little more on offer than his loving family. Dwayne’s father reluctantly taught him the family trade, and while there was a period of wrestling shows for $40 a night, his meteoric ascendency in the world of pro wrestling as “The Rock” is nigh unparalleled.

Though he maintains tremendous gratitude and deference toward the art of pro wrestling, Dwayne Johnson has never been one to limit himself to doing just one thing, and he parlayed the fame he gained from that platform into featured roles on television,...

Dwayne Johnson's First Lead Movie Hits Netflix, But Does It Hold Up?
Image
While Dwayne Johnson made his big screen premiere in Brendan Fraser's The Mummy Returns, he had a surprisingly limited amount of screentime considering he was the villain, and he was The Rock. As Mathayus of Akkad, he was also subjected to one of the most awkward bits of early CGI in film history. Nonetheless, audiences smelled what he was cooking and took to the actor's cinematic charisma, developed after years of wrestling, and he was very quickly thrust into leading man status the next year.

The Scorpion King top-billed a 30-year-old Dwayne Johnson as the titular character, whose story was explored in The Mummy Returns but is widely expanded upon in this prequel. This was long before Johnson's Hollywood status as the highest-paid actor from 2019 to 2021, and before other wrestlers and fighters turned Hollywood behemoths, like John Cena and Dave Bautista, further normalized the heavily muscled trend. Dwayne Johnson's $177M Box Office Disappointment Lands On Netflix's Global Chart 7 Years Later
Image
Dwayne Johnson's $177 million box office disappointment lands on Netflix's global chart seven years later. Johnson, also known by his ring name The Rock, began his career in professional wrestling and became one of the most celebrated stars in the WWE, his charisma and physical prowess leading to opportunities in Hollywood. His first film role came in 2001's The Mummy Returns, which spawned the spin-off The Scorpion King. This led to a variety of roles for The Rock from action-hero to comedic lead, becoming one of the most bankable stars.

Over the years, he has starred in family-friendly comedies like The Game Plan, Tooth Fairy, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, and Jumanji: The Next Level. How The Scorpion King Connects To The Mummy Movies
Image
2002's epic The Scorpion King reinvented the titular character after his debut in The Mummy Returns. The Scorpion King depicts the ancient origins of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's character, "Mathayus of Akkad," who first appeared in 2001's The Mummy Returns as a villain. Unlike the second film in director Stephen Sommers's The Mummy movie series, the first of the Scorpion King movies features Mathayus's humble beginnings as an assassin-for-hire before turning into a legendary Akkadian hero.

The Scorpion King may be a prequel to The Mummy films, but the story spins off from the latter franchise into its own larger narrative. This extended into five films, largely separate from its earlier connection to The Mummy but with a lingering connection between the. As a result, Mathayus's origin story forces viewers to rethink everything they knew about the character seen in The Mummy and The Scorpion King movies.

Why Dwayne Johnson Didn't Return For The Scorpion King 2
Image
Despite achieving mainstream success in the first installment in the franchise, Dwayne Johnson did not return for The Scorpion King 2. Johnson made his movie debut as Mathayus of Akkad, also known as "The Scorpion King," the lead villain in 2001's The Mummy Returns; the movie's box office success led to Universal releasing The Scorpion King in 2002, with Johnson receiving his first lead role as the legendary warrior.

With Johnson at the head of The Scorpion King cast, the film explores Mathayus' origins as a desert warrior seeking revenge for the murder of his father and the destruction of his home. While the movie received a mixed reception from critics, it was financially successful and saw the release of four sequels in The Scorpion King franchise. The Scorpion King helped establish Dwayne Johnson as a leading actor, but he ultimately decided not to reprise his role for the sequel movies.

All 5 Scorpion King Movies, Ranked Worst To Best
Image
The Scorpion King movies ranked starts with the eponymous 2002 Dwayne Johnson vehicle before spawning a five-movie series of fantasy fun. Long before joining The Fast Saga as Hobbs, The Rock - as he was still credited at the time - was first seen as the Scorpion King in 2001's The Mummy Returns. Introduced as a conquering warlord in the film's beginning and a human-scorpion hybrid creature in its finale, the Scorpion King's backstory would be explored a year later in the spin-off, The Scorpion King.

In The Scorpion King, he is re-introduced as Akkadian assassin Mathayus, but in The Scorpion King's straight-to-video sequels would later pass the role on to Michael Copon, Victor Webster, and Zach McGowan, respectively. Each portrays Mathayus at different points in his life in different adventures involving magic, monsters, and swordplay. The Scorpion King movies aspire not to be grand art but simply silly sword-and-sorcery fun...

Dwayne Johnson Left Jeri Ryan A Hilarious Gift On The Star Trek: Voyager Set

Dwayne Johnson's Forgotten $2Bn Franchise Finally Returning Could Not Be Coming At A Better Time
Image
Dwayne Johnson may be at the top of the Hollywood A-List, but despite his popularity, his latest films have failed to generate much enthusiasm or revenue, but that is all set to change thanks to Jumanji 4 finally setting a release date. Johnson's career has taken him to the extremes in terms of performances. Initially, he started out as a professional wrestler, where he grew his audience and became a popular athlete. However, his first foray into film, with his silent role as the monster in The Mummy Returns was less than spectacular.

However, Johnson pushed forward, and within a short span, he became a popular and credible actor in his own rite. His physique clearly made him a good fit for action roles and playing the hero, but Johnson also refined his ability to deliver emotional and compelling performances. And then, he found a niche as a comedy action star.

The Scorpion King True Story: Did Dwayne Johnson's Character Really Exist?
Image
While Dwayne Johnson's movie The Scorpion King is fiction, a figure in Egyptian history known as King Scorpion did exist. The Scorpion King was released in 2002, one year after Johnson made his debut in The Mummy Returns, the second movie in The Mummy franchise. While Johnson played a villain in The Mummy Returns, the character of Mathayus was a hero in The Scorpion King. The timeline can be confusing, but the version of Mathayas that Johnson plays in The Scorpion King is actually the grandfather of his character in The Mummy Returns, and is set thousands of years before.

Even though The Scorpion King only holds a 40% on Rotten Tomatoes, the film made $180 million at the box office on a $60 million budget and cemented Johnson as a leading man in Hollywood. Therefore, audiences were clearly intrigued by Johnson's character in The Scorpion King. While Johnson did not return for any future movies,...
