Peyton Reed’s 2008 Romantic Comedy Paired Jim Carrey and Zooey Deschanel, But It Was Very Cringe
Image
Growing up, Jim Carrey was The guy—king of rubber-faced chaos, delivering punchlines with the energy of a Red Bull-fueled cartoon. I was obsessed. I watched The Mask before a school exam once and spent the whole week annoying everyone by reenacting it.

Whether it was the wild antics of Ace Ventura, the idiotic brilliance of Dumb and Dumber, or the raw heart in Eternal Sunshine, Carrey could do no wrong. So when I recently rewatched Yes Man, ice cream in hand, expecting feel-good vibes.

Yeah, big mistake. The age gap? The zero-spark romance? It was giving cringe. Let’s unpack this misfire.

Jim Carrey says ‘yes’ to laughs—but ‘no’ to a believable romance Jim Carrey in Yes Man | Credits: Warner Bros. Pictures

I’ll be real with you—I hadn’t watched Yes Man in what felt like donkey years (translation: forever), and when I finally hit...

Image
Blake Lively’s Gossip Girl Was Adapted Into A Manga? (Photo Credit – Facebook)

Gossip Girl is based on Cecily von Ziegesar’s popular novel series of the same name. It follows Serena van der Woodsen, Blair Waldorf, and their classmates at a prestigious high school in New York City. Love, lies, secrets, and scandals unfold as teenagers endure the ups and downs.

In 2010, Yen Press capitalized on the series’ fame and created a Shōjo manga titled Gossip Girl: For Your Eyes Only by Baek Hye-kyung. The books and the show influenced the manga. However, the author gave...

He continued, “At that point in my mind, I really loved memorizing the lines, knowing all the beats, but hated running it, because it felt like it took all the freshness out of it. Especially with comedy. And she got angry and went and reported me to the director and the studio.”

'Breaking In' from 'V for Vendetta' Director Is Now A Free Streaming Hit
Image
James McTeigue made an explosive directorial debut with the critically acclaimed V for Vendetta in 2005, and has since added five more movies to his resume. His last cinematic project was Breaking In, a home invasion thriller starring Gabrielle Union, released in 2018. Despite receiving mixed reviews initially, the movie managed to cultivate a modest fan following, thanks largely to Union’s powerful performance. Breaking In has recently become a free streaming hit, ranking #4 on Freevee.

Breaking In centers around Shaun Russell (Union), a mother who travels with her two children to her late father Isaac’s secluded mansion, with high-tech security features. She must make the final arrangements to sell the estate.

But their trip takes a dangerous turn when four criminals break into the house looking for $4 million that Isaac put in a safe. They also take the children hostage and lock Shaun outside the house. The twist on the...

The 15 Best Modern Heist Movies
Image
There’s a reason we keep coming back to the heist movie genre, again and again and again. That’s because although most movies would have you believe that committing crimes is bad, we can’t help but respect a character who does it well. Robbing a little old lady on the street is unforgivable, sure, but robbing a wealthy old lady who keeps her hoard of ill-gotten money in an impenetrable vault surrounded by lasers and mercenaries? You gotta respect the moxie of anybody who even tries. And if they succeed, well dang, good for them. It sounds like they earned every penny.

There’s no shortage of classic heist movies, but with income inequality on our minds, and billionaires actively destroying everything decent about this planet every single day, the genre seems particularly alluring in the 21st century. Maybe that’s why we’ve had so many classic...

Despite Its Flaws, Chris Evans’s Panned First Movie is 1 of the Best Comedies of the 2000s
Image
Chris Evans is one of the most charming actors of his generation. He can seemingly do it all, from cult action like Snowpiercer to starring as a scene-stealing supporting cast member in movies like Knives Out and The Gray Man. These films are excellent and have their own dedicated fan bases, but without a doubt, Evans is best known for starring as Captain America in nine MCU movies to date.

Before Chris Evans donned the star-spangled shield as Steve Rogers, he made his movie debut in an underappreciated comedy called Not Another Teen Movie. This parody film spoofs 2000s teen movies such as She's All That, 10 Things I Hate About You, Never Been Kissed, Bring It On, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, American Beauty, The Breakfast Club, and Cruel Intentions. Evans stars as Jake Wyler, a pretty boy jock who makes a bet with his friends that he can transform...

The Bring It On Movies In Chronological Order
Image
All seven of the Bring It On movies can be watched in release order or any order the audience chooses. The teen cheerleading comedy series began in 2000 with the release of the very first Bring It On movie, which was helmed by Ant-Man's Peyton Reed. The film follows high school cheer captain Torrance Shipman (Kirsten Dunst) as she scrambles to come up with an original routine for her team the Toros to perform at a national competition after discovering her predecessor plagiarized choreography from rival squad, the East Compton Clovers, led by Gabrielle Union’s Isis.

Although Bring It On was initially dismissed as just another teen comedy, it’s become a cult classic in the years since, thanks to its exploration of race, class, and cultural appropriation through the lens of the wealthy, suburban, and predominantly white Toros, and the low-income, inner-city and predominantly Black East Compton Clovers. The...

Dragon Ball Super's Toyotarou Reveals New Artwork of Akira Toriyama's Favorite Character – And It's Not Goku
Image
Official Dragon Ball Super artist Toyotarou recently unveiled the latest installment of his "Toyotarou Tries To Draw" illustration project. As a heartfelt tribute to the late Akira Toriyama, Dragon Ball's successor drew a piece of new artwork spotlighting Toriyama's favorite self-created character.

Per Dragon Ball's official site, the latest piece in Toyotarou's "Tries to Draw" series features Cowa -- a 14-chapter manga series that originally ran in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from 1997 to 1998. The story's main group of characters is led by Mako Maruyama, a former sumo wrestler with an intimidating appearance. While Maruyama lacks the household-name status of Dragon Ball's Goku, he still holds the distinction of being Toriyama's all-time favorite manga protagonist. Toyotarou's illustration also depicts Maruyama's mischievous companions, Paifu and Jose. Cbr readers can check it out below.

‘Cruel Intentions’ Remake Bosses on Movie’s Influences, Casting Their Love Triangle and Putting the Mean Back Into YA Dramas
Image
In its 240 years, Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ once scandalous (and at one point, banned) 1782 novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses’ has been adapted around 30 times for various stage, radio, and screen productions across five continents. Yet for many, Roger Kumble’s Cruel Intentions has remained one of its most popular retellings.

The 1999 movie spin on a pair of lovers-turned-rivals who destroy each other through their cruel manipulations of the unsuspecting French aristocracy reimagines the unscrupulous members of the French nobility into two competitive (and sexually enamored) teenage step-siblings, Kathryn (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Sebastian (Ryan Phillippe). As part of a jealousy-driven bet that begins with ruining their new classmate Cecile (Selma Blair), the duo finds the stakes of their contest flamed by the arrival of the disarmingly kind and principled Annette (Reese Witherspoon), the daughter of their affluent Upper East Side high school’s headmaster.

The box-office hit not only bolstered the...

10 Movies That No One Expected To Become Broadway Shows
Image
In recent years, Broadway has begun shifting its focus toward a new means of attracting people to its theaters: adapting popular movies into live, showstopping musicals and plays. By capitalizing on the pre-existing fan bases of the films which inspired them, many of these shows have become hugely successful, both critically and commercially. After all, some beloved films just feel as though they were born to have their stories told on the stage.

Some of these movies-turned-Broadway-shows, however, have actually come as huge surprises to audiences, including the fans of the original films. To many, especially those not actively invested in the world of theatre, it can be difficult to envision how certain stories could be told on stage, both in a practical sense and in terms of their subject matter. Regardless of how successful they proved to be, these films defied expectations and experienced an exciting new life on a Broadway stage.

There Is One Reason Why Frieza Is Dragon Ball's Best Villain, and Toriyama Already Explained It
Image
Friezas legacy as the ultimate tyrant in Dragon Ball is undeniable, and he has intrigued fans across generations due to his cunning and ruthless personality as he strives for greater power. As one of the series longest-standing antagonists, Friezas presence continues to carry significant weight, and the malevolent wishes to take down Goku once and for all. As a villain, Frieza persists no matter how many times he fails, making him one of the most memorable characters who is always a step ahead compared to other enemies the Z-Fighters have faced.

In fact, Akira Toriyama himself has confirmed Friezas significance in the series. In Toriyamas own words from a comment published on V-Jump in 2015, before the Resurrection of 'F' movie was released, "Frieza is the most vicious enemy, who is most worth defeating. This statement reveals that Frieza isnt only powerful, but he was created to be an unforgettable...

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice: Michael Keaton’s character from the Tim Burton franchise was essentially summoned from across the TV talk-show landscape on Halloween with hosts on NBC’s Today show, the syndicated Live With Kelly and Mark and The Kelly Clarkson Show all dressing up as the ghost with the most.

On Thursday’s Today, Al Roker dressed up as Beetlejuice and Dylan Dreyer dressed as Winona Ryder’s Lydia Deetz. And on Live With Kelly and Mark later Thursday morning, Kelly Ripa took on Deetz with Mark Consuelos sporting the Beetlejuice ensemble.

Kelly Clarkson also donned a Beetlejuice costume on her eponymous daytime talk show. She kicked off the show with a spooky Kellyoke of “Banana Boat (Day-o).”

While Beetlejuice made a number of apperances on Thursday, Consuelos and Ripa changed costumes multiple times throughout this year’s Only Murders in the Building-inspired “Only Halloween in the Building” Halloween show.

How To Watch The Bring It On Movies In Order
Image
After a fall-off in popularity (and quality) throughout much of the 1990s, teen-skewing comedies were suddenly all the rage in Hollywood again at the turn of the millennium. The "Pygmalion"-inspired "She's All That" kicked off the craze, which included such highs as "10 Things I Hate About You" and "Dick," and more lows than I care to remember. These films were quite clearly the offspring of John Hughes' 1980s classics, but they could rarely come close to the mix of insouciance and sentimentality that made his films snap. They also weren't very funny, which didn't help.

The best film of this brief renaissance by far was Peyton Reed's "Bring It On," which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2020. Working from a spiky-sexy-hilarious screenplay by Jessica Bendinger, Reed's movie kicks off with an exuberant opening cheer routine and never loses an ounce of zip on its way to a thrilling...

Ex-Dragon Ball Editor Reveals the Series That 'Saved' Shonen Jump
Image
Shonen Jump is synonymous with several of the world's best-selling manga franchises, including the likes of Dragon Ball, Naruto, Demon Slayer and many others. However, according to former Weekly Shonen Jump editor-in-chief Kazuhiko Torishima, Shueisha's iconic publication was once on the verge of collapse -- only to be saved by a new artist and their debut manga series.

Kazuhiko Torishima was Akira Toriyama's main editor during the serialization of his original Dragon Ball series. The 11-year period between 1984 and 1995 was an extremely lucrative one for Weekly Shonen Jump, with Toriyama's shonen epic driving up sales for the magazine. However, the manga's eventual conclusion resulted in a dramatic decrease in magazine sales. As detailed on Mdpr, Kazuhiko Torishima, who was put in charge of V-Jump after Dragon Ball's ending, was abruptly transferred back to Weekly Shonen Jump in order to revive the failing publication.

10 Most Ambitious Movies That Were the Biggest Box Office Disasters
Image
Hollywood has a long history of varied success when it comes to cinematic releases, with stories that range from box office disasters, like Borderlands, to shocking hits, like Bring It On. It can often be hard to predict these flops, with many films having everything going for them on paper, from strong budgets to all-star casts. Unfortunately, several factors have contributed to some of the most ambitious films in history failing at the box office.

Films can fail at the box office for several reasons, ranging from tough competition to unwanted sequels or betrayal of source material. Word of mouth has always been a make or break for the success of films, and if a movie is considered terrible by early audiences, that can sabotage even the strongest marketing campaigns. For some films, their grasp exceeded their reach, and their ambition simply proved too costly. Not all of these films are bad,...

The 2000s Were the Pinnacle of Mean Girl Cinema
Image
This article is part of IndieWire’s 2000s Week celebration. Click here for a whole lot more.

In 2002, author Rosalind Wiseman published a self-help book entitled “Queen Bees and Wannabes,” aimed at helping parents of high school-aged girls deal with the vicious effects of bullying on their daughters. Wiseman could not have possibly predicted what came next: that Tina Fey would a) read the book, b) see some of her own high school experience reflected back to her, and c) call up Lorne Michaels and suggest the non-fiction book would make a banger of a high school comedy. Some people have all the luck, don’t they?

What Fey saw in Wiseman’s relatively dry book was timeless — there have always been instances of “girl on girl crime,” and they sure as hell weren’t stopping — but when the comedic icon turned Wiseman’s work into the enduring early aughts offering “Mean Girls,...

“She has an agent who negotiates her terms That She Agrees To”: Kirsten Dunst’s Spider-Man Gender Pay Gap Comment Mega Trolled by Comedian Jeff Dye for Being Ridiculously Hypocritical
Image
Actress Kirsten Dunst is widely recognized for her role as Mary Jane Watson in the Spider-Man trilogy, but she was already a well-established figure in the film industry long before starring alongside Tobey Maguire in the Spider-Man trilogy. She had played the role of Judy in the all-time favorite Jumanji and had also led iconic films like Bring It On. Clearly, she has been a prominent figure in Hollywood since time immemorial.

Despite her fame, Kirsten Dunst once opened up about the pay disparity between her and Tobey Maguire. He reportedly earned much more than she did, despite having fewer films under his belt compared to Kirsten Dunst. The actress became the victim of trolling at the hands of comedian Jeff Dye who blasted the actress for wanting to be paid more than the actor who plays the literal titular character.

‘Sugar & Spice’ Is the Child of ‘Bring It On’ and ‘Usual Suspects’ You Never Knew You Needed

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.

First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.

Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.

The Pitch: Cheerleaders Gone… Bank Robbing?

The year 2000 was the New Hollywood of cheerleaders in film. After years of movies in which teen girls with pom poms were reduced to one-note bitches and bimbos, Y2K saw the easy-to-stereotype athletes receive a sudden rush of cinematic respect with Peyton Reed’s instant classic “Bring It On.”

Starring Kirsten Dunst and Gabrielle Union, the story of a rivalry between two cheer squads combined an authentic love for the (extremely grueling) work of cheer captains with fun flirty comedy and a surprisingly intelligent depiction of cultural appropriation.

Archie’s House of Horror: Truth Or Dare

When it comes to the golden age of horror films—hell, the golden age of films in general, I will die on the hill arguing that it is the late 1990s into the early 2000s. Sure, you might have incredibly valid reasons to argue against that, but this was a time of peak cinema when it comes to my personal media consumption. I consider it a source of pride that my strongest trivia category, were I to encounter it, would easily be Teen Movies of the late ‘90s into the early ‘00s. You see, I was at the perfect age for those movies to make an impact—a nerdy preteen with no siblings who was often glued to the TV. While everyone can easily recall gems like 10 Things I Hate About You, She’s All That, Bring it On, and Mean Girls, there are an equally large amount of teen...
