“Together,” a gory love story starring real-life husband and wife Dave Franco and Alison Brie, shook up audiences at its Sunday night premiere in Park City. The Sundance Midnight selection kept the packed audience hooting, hollering and yelling “Oh shit!” at many of the gory, surprising set pieces.

The film follows a couple, played by Franco and Brie, who move from the city to the country for her dream job. Following a chance encounter with something supernatural in the woods, they start experiencing a series of haunting and gross moments that are best not ruined here.

Suffice it to say it’s a film destined to play well with audiences, as the game actors balance nightmare fuel with big humorous beats, all while developing three-dimensional characters sometimes ignored in horror fare.

In a post-screening Q&a, writer and director Michael Shanks spoke about the importance of occasionally breaking tension in the film with humor.

The married couple and co-stars were joined their writer and director Michael Shanks for the event, which was held during the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.

Dave Franco and Alison Brie are set to rock the Sundance Film Festival with their horror movie “Together,” and the duo joined the Variety Studio presented by Audible at Sundance to discuss their latest onscreen collaboration. Franco and Brie have been married since 2017.

“We love it and we want to keep going,” Franco said about acting together. “As long as people let us keep doing it, we feel like we’re getting away with something. For whatever reason, we work really well together. When we’re acting together, we’re so comfortable with each other and we can take more risks with the material. If one of us has an inauthentic moment the other sees it right away, so we have to do our best work.”

One thing Franco and Brie never do on film sets is give each other acting notes, and it’s because they don’t want to offend the other.

Dave Franco has heard the comparisons to Luigi Mangione. While promoting two films at the Sundance Film Festival, including Together with his wife Alison Brie, Franco shared just how much buzz this resemblance has caused. Brie joked, ‘Anyone? Do you mean everyone?’ Franco added, ‘I’ve never gotten more texts about anything in my life.’

According to Franco, the messages came flooding in from everyone he knows. ‘Anyone who has my number reached out,’ he admitted. But so far, no one has approached him for a role in any projects about Mangione, though social media has been vocal about the idea. Brie quipped, ‘No official offers,’ and Franco quickly agreed.

Mangione became infamous in December when he was linked to the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan. After a lengthy manhunt, Mangione was arrested in Pennsylvania and is now awaiting trial after pleading not guilty.

The independent film community settling into Park City where the next crop of indie films will launch at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival has something to celebrate: a 2024 where audiences turned out and started to turn the market around.

If the Oscars shortlist is the equivalent of mid-term exams for awards contenders, then Netflix’s “Emilia Pérez” and Universal Pictures’ “Wicked” just received passing grades.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the shortlists in 10 categories for the upcoming 97th Oscars ceremony.

“Emilia Pérez” landed six mentions overall, including makeup, sound, original score, international feature, and two for original song (“El Mal” and “Mi Camino”). The musical was followed another behometh in the race, Universal Pictures’ “Wicked,” which landed four.

The preliminary voting applies to animated short film, documentary feature, documentary short, international feature, live action short, makeup and hairstyling, original score, original song, sound and visual effects.

Oscar voting to determine the nominees in all 23 categories opens on Wednesday, Jan. 8, and concludes on Sunday, Jan. 12. Nominations will be announced on Friday, Jan. 17.

The 2025 Sundance Film Festival‘s lineup will include 87 feature films and six episodic projects. Sundance received 15,775 submissions from 156 countries, including 4,138 feature-length film submissions. The 87 films selected represent 33 countries and territories, with 36 of the chosen films coming from first-time feature filmmakers.

“The Sundance Film Festival remains steadfast in its commitment to elevating unique and urgent voices in independent storytelling. Audiences can expect a 2025 program that showcases varied and vibrant filmmaking globally,” stated Robert Redford, Sundance Institute Founder and President.

Together Films has acquired world sales rights to Gay Games, an upcoming documentary about the LGBTQ+ sports tournament.

Together picked up the film from producers Aleksandra Bilic and Jamie Clark of UK production company My Accomplice, and will present the film to buyers at Doc NYC and IDFA.
