‘Oh, Mary!’ star Bianca Leigh could become the first openly transgender Tony Award winner
Image
“Everyone knows Louise! Nobody likes her, but everyone knows her,” asserts Cole Escola’s demented Mary Todd Lincoln in Oh, Mary! That sentiment might not exactly ring true for Tony voters. Louise actress Bianca Leigh is something of a secret weapon in the hit Broadway comedy, and is predicted to land a Tony nomination as a result. Should Leigh manage to win, she would become the first openly transgender Tony Award winner.

In Gold Derby’s combined odds for Best Featured Actress in a Play, Leigh currently sits in third place. Only Kara Young (Purpose) and Jessica Hecht (Eureka Day) are ranked above Leigh. Oh, Mary! is currently the dominant frontrunner for Best Play, Best Director of a Play, and Best Lead Actor in a Play (Escola). The overall love for the production is bound to help other performers during awards season.

Leigh portrays Mary’s chaperone, Louise, the frequent...

‘The Girl in the Pool’ Review: Freddie Prinze Jr. Tries to Hide His Mistress’ Corpse in a Schlocky Thriller With More Laughs Than Suspense
Image
“The Girl in the Pool” is a laugh riot, delivering sitcom-style shenanigans rather than a sincere sense of tension. Whether it’s intended to be funny or not is debatable. Director Dakota Gorman’s Hitchcock-inspired, psychological thriller about marital infidelity and a fracturing family takes a few of its cues from “Rope,” hiding a key figure in a trunk as a party transpires and a mystery murderer remains in their midst. But the similarities end there. Regardless of whether we’re supposed to chuckle at our hero’s crumbling sanity or empathize with his strife, it’s empty-calorie viewing designed for viewers to either mock or embrace its hijinks. Those who do celebrate its tawdry twists and turns, however, are assured to have a good time.

Meek middle manager Thomas (Freddie Prinze Jr.) seemingly has the perfect life. He has a good job, a huge home in the serene suburbs,...

What Happened To Freddie Prinze Jr.
Image
Freddie Prinze Jr.'s career peaked in the late '90s and early 2000s with high-profile romantic comedies like "She's All That," but his subsequent films flopped at the box office. Prinze Jr. took a break from acting to prioritize his role as a father and has appeared on screen less since 2008. While only dabbling in a film career, Prinze Jr. has remained involved in the entertainment industry through voice acting, WWE, and creating content for his YouTube channel and podcasts.

Freddie Prinze Jr. was a teen heartthrob and winner of multiple Teen Choice Awards, but he has spent much less time in the limelight in recent years. Son of Freddie Prinze Sr., star of the '70s NBC sitcom Chico and the Man, it seemed that acting was in Prinze Jr.'s blood. His breakthrough in I Know What You Did Last Summer set him on a decade-long high in Hollywood.

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Star Peppermint Talks ‘Transparent’ Musical, Anti-lgbtq Legislation and Wanting to Compete on ‘All Stars’
Image
Peppermint wants back on “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” She famously was runner-up in Season 9 when Sasha Velour took the crown after her iconic rose petal-filled finale lip sync.

“I would love to go on ‘All Stars,’” Peppermint tells me on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast. She was asked to compete in 2018 but was already booked for the Go-Go’s Broadway musical, “Head Over Heels.” “I will happily go onto the show if they invite me,” Peppermint says. “It is quite expensive and quite an investment, but I do think it could be worth it.”

Peppermint will next be seen in “A Transparent Musical,” opening May 23 at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. She plays Davina, a role originated on the “Transparent” television series by Alexandra Billings. Peppermint recalls having “two-person watch parties” with her music producer when the series first premiered on Amazon in 2014.

Bonnie Milligan (‘Kimberly Akimbo’) explores the complexities of love and grief: ‘It’s an honor to provide that kind of catharsis’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
“What I find fun about these characters is how to make them human and as real as possible,” explains Bonnie Milligan. The actress is currently starring in the Broadway transfer of “Kimberly Akimbo” as Aunt Debra, a role she originated Off-Broadway to much acclaim. While Milligan displays her signature brand of comedy in the role, she is quick to point out that Debra is more than just a zany criminal with killer vocals. The performer is keen to bring out the complex intermingling of love and grief which define the character, and the musical as a whole. Watch the exclusive video interview above.

In this new musical from David Lindsay-Abaire and Jeanine Tesori, Milligan’s Debra arrives at her niece Kimberly’s (Victoria Clark) doorstep with her latest (and highly illegal) money making scheme. Kimberly, a 16 year old girl who appears closer to 70 thanks to a rare genetic disorder, is...

Orphan Black: The 10 Most Essential Felix Moments
Image
This article contains spoiler for Orphan Black.

Felix Dawkins is definitely a character, and human clone Sarah’s foster brother brings some unexpected humor to the tension and trauma of Orphan Black. However, there is someone unwaveringly loyal and determined beneath the eyeliner and comic relief.

Orphan Black premiered a decade ago today. Throughout five seasons, it becomes evident there is more to Felix, brilliantly played by Jordan Gavaris, than sequins and witty comebacks. He is at Sarah’s side even when they have to figure out how to hide a dead body. He’s allergic to suburbia, but still ventures to this alien realm when Alison needs him. He willingly turns his loft into a makeshift hotel for the sestras. He may have no power next to Rachel, but still manages to strike fear right through her left eye socket.

Whether or not his eyeliner is on point, these...

Watch Kevin Bacon, Jimmy Fallon Revise the Rolling Stones’ ‘Paint It, Black’
Image
In their latest edition of “First Drafts of Rock,” Kevin Bacon and Jimmy Fallon have taken on the Rolling Stones’ 1966 hit “Paint It, Black.” In the clip, filmed for The Tonight Show, Bacon embodies Mick Jagger while Fallon becomes Keith Richards.

In their “first draft” of the rock song, the pair croon, “I go to Michaels/ And I ask, ‘Where is the paint?’/ They tell me, ‘Aisle 6’/ That’s where they keep the paint.” Later, the lyrics get even more meta: “I see a can of paint/I want to paint the paint.

Chromeo Catch an Irresistible Groove on New Song “Words with You”: Stream
Image
Chromeo are back: The electro-funk duo of David “Dave 1” Macklovitch and Patrick “P-Thugg” Gemayel have released a catchy new track called “Words with You.” The group are billing it as their first official single since their last studio album, 2018’s Head Over Heels.

Featuring Chromeo’s signature combination of disco and funk, “Words with You” is just as smooth as it is catchy thanks to a grooving bassline and irresistible synths. However, the lyrics are actually about a breakdown in communication within a relationship. “A simple word called trust,” Dave 1 sings. “That’s between the two of us/ I wouldn’t want to play with that.” Stream the track below.

In a statement, Dave 1 described “Words with You” as “a mix of new and familiar.” He named the horn section and live instrumentation of drums, bass, and synths as new, with “the groove and the tone, two signature things...

Bill Nye at an event for Night of Too Many Stars: America Comes Together for Autism Programs (2015)
Linoleum Review: Jim Gaffigan Faces an Existential Crisis in Heartfelt Sci-Fi Drama
Bill Nye at an event for Night of Too Many Stars: America Comes Together for Autism Programs (2015)
If we lived in an alternate universe where Bill Nye never got his big break, relegated to shooting his lo-fi children’s show from his garage and submitting tapes to a local affiliate in hopes he’d advance to a prime Sunday morning slot, it would look something like the one Cameron Edwin (Jim Gaffigan) occupies. As his marriage is also on the brink of collapse, his midlife crisis conveniently dovetails with an old Russian rocket falling in his backyard. Edwin decides to make the most of the opportunity and attempt to fulfill his dreams of being an astronaut. An effective concoction of cosmic mystery and earnest emotion to elevate its small-scale, homespun design, Colin West’s Linoleum evolves into a nifty, heartfelt sci-drama.

Though initially drawing, liberally, from Donnie Darko, with its aerial disaster phenomenon and dreamy slow-motion introduction to a sunny high school recalling the “Head Over Heels” montage,...

2022 Broadway fall season preview of musicals: ‘Almost Famous,’ ‘Kimberly Akimbo’ and more
Image
A new Broadway season has started, and there are currently seven productions of musicals set to open this fall. Could we be seeing any of them contend at next year’s Tony Awards? Below is an overview of the plot of each musical as well as the awards history of its author, cast, creative team, and the opening and (where applicable) closing dates.

“Almost Famous” (previews begin October 3; opens November 3)

In this stage musical adaptation of Cameron Crowe’s 2000 Academy Award-winning film, William Miller is an idealistic 15-year-old aspiring music journalist. When Rolling Stone magazine hires him to go on the road with an up-and-coming band, he is thrust into the rock-and-roll circus, where his love of music, his longing for friendship, and his integrity as a writer collide.

This musical has a book written by Crowe, who also co-wrote the score with Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Tom Kitt.

Pose star Angelica Ross is set to make her Broadway debut in Chicago this September, her arrival marking a historic moment for both the musical and the industry.

Ross will star as Roxie Hart, the aspiring actress turned murderess, in Broadway’s second longest-running musical. She is the first openly trans actress in the role, and among one of the first known trans actresses to star in a leading role in a Broadway musical.

The activist, executive producer, president of Miss Ross, Inc. and founder of TransTech Social Enterprises will begin her run at the Ambassador Theater on Sept. 12, with the American Horror Story star playing an eight-week limited engagement through Nov. 6. Watch Kevin Bacon, Jimmy Fallon Reimagine Tears for Fears’ ‘Head Over Heels’
Image
Kevin Bacon joined Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show for a segment called “First Drafts of Rock,” which saw the pair performing an alternate version of Tears for Fears’ 1985 song “Head Over Heels.”

Standing in for Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, complete with ’80s haircuts, Bacon and Fallon showcased the supposed “first draft” of the New Wave song. While the original tune opens with “I wanted to be with you alone / and talk about the weather,” this version takes the discussion of the weather to the next level.

“Got a...

L Morgan Lee (‘A Strange Loop’) could become the first openly transgender performer to earn a Tony nomination
Image
Lend me your “sympathetic ears,” because history could be made when Tony Award nominations are announced on May 9. The Pulitzer Prize-winning “A Strange Loop” is bound to have a strong showing. While it’s already an impressive feat for a self-described “big, Black, queer-ass, American Broadway show” to enjoy a buzzy commercial run, that’s not the history of which I speak. I’m looking at the acting races: if “A Strange Loop’s” L Morgan Lee manages to nab a Featured Actress in a Musical nomination, she will become the first openly transgender performer to be nominated for a Tony Award.

“A Strange Loop” follows the story of Usher (Jaquel Spivey), who happens to be a front of house usher for a major Broadway hit. Michael R. Jackson’s self-referential script sees Usher navigating life in New York while trying to write a new musical … a musical about a man similar to himself,...

Joan Micklin Silver
Chilly Scenes of Winter
Joan Micklin Silver
Though the title sounds like an Sctv parody of a Bergman film, Joan Micklin Silver’s dramedy was first released in 1979 as Head Over Heels and was very obviously a romantic comedy. Since the box office was underwhelming, distributors lopped off the original’s happy ending and changed the name. Voila, a more successful film. Go figure. John Heard and Mary Beth Hurt play the on again-off again lovers.

Riverdale (2017)
Riverdale’s 100th Episode Is a Multiversal Celebration of All Things Archie
Riverdale (2017)
This Riverdale review contains spoilers.

Riverdale Season 6 Episode 4

“I know, it read it in the comics”

For its 100th episode, Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa scripted what is easily the show’s most audacious episode. “The Jughead Paradox” had the unenviable task of wrapping up the entire “Rivervale” saga and setting the stage for the rest of the series’ sixth season — which will air when the show returns in the spring. That alone would be enough of a challenge for any writer to tackle, yet Aguirre-Sacasa ups the creative ante by having the installment also become a meta funhouse mirror reflection of itself by reinserting long-gone characters into the narrative and having characters reflect on nearly every ridiculous thing that has ever happened during the series. Oh yeah, there is also the plotline about parallel universes colliding into each other and threatening to wipe out the whole of existence unless Jughead can save the day.

Alaska Thunderf–k Tackles Gender, ‘Drag Race’ and Catwoman in New Memoir ‘My Name’s Yours, What’s Alaska?’
Image
Writing a book has always been a goal for Alaska Thunderfuck 5000. In fact, she’s got a rather ambitious three-step plan for herself: “The big things are the book, the movie and then the made-for-tv movie.”

The “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars” winner swears to tell “the T, the whole T and nothing but the T” in her new memoir out Nov. 9, “My Name’s Yours, What’s Alaska?”

While the book brings a fair share of belly laughs, Alaska is also unafraid to face her past head-on with a candid account of her upbringing, her relationship (and public breakup) with fellow “Drag Race” winner Sharon Needles and her drag journey.

“I want to be able to talk about things in a real way, because I think that it was a way for me to learn from my past and my journey. And hopefully other people can too,” she tells Variety.

‘Chasing the Line’ Director Andreas Schmied on Ski Legend Franz Klammer and Shooting From the Gut
Image
In telling the story of champion alpine ski racer Franz Klammer, one of Austria’s most revered and beloved sports heroes, director Andreas Schmied forewent the usual biopic tropes, focusing instead on a few fateful days that culminated in his victory at the 1976 Olympics in Innsbruck. It was that focus that ultimately convinced Klammer to give the film, “Chasing the Line,” a thumbs up. The movie world premieres at the Zurich Film Festival, which opens Thursday.

Other attempts had been made at telling Klammer’s story on film over the years, but none had succeeded. When producer Jakob Pochlatko of Vienna-based Epo-Film approached Schmied with the project, the director embraced the opportunity.

“I grew up with Franz Klammer – everybody in Austria did,” Schmied says, stressing Klammer’s enduring popularity in the country. “I knew what a big deal Franz is.”

Schmied and his wife and writing partner Elisabeth Schmied met...

Surprises Ahead For Stars In The House Anniversary Week
Image
On March 16, 2020, Seth Rudetsky and James Wesley launched “Stars In The House” in response to what they knew would be an immediate need for funds in light of the Broadway shutdown.

Now, one year and over 375 episodes later, “Stars In The House” has raised over $715,000 for The Actors Fund, and an additional $200,000 for other charity organizations who have needed support throughout the pandemic.

“We can’t believe it has been a year! We continue to be overwhelmed by the generosity of our viewers, who send in donations from all over the world,” said Rudetsky and Wesley. “We thought that after the first few weeks, contributions would dwindle and the show would be more about bringing some joy and positivity during these dark times. But the fact that we have been able to do both – deliver fun and financial support – is beyond our wildest dreams. We are so grateful to our team behind the scenes,...

Joan Micklin Silver
Joan Micklin Silver, ‘Crossing Delancey’ Director, Dies at 85
Joan Micklin Silver
Joan Micklin Silver, who forged her own way as a female director in the 1970s and ’80s and helmed seven features including “Crossing Delancey” and “Hester Street,” died Thursday in Manhattan. She was 85.

Her daughter, Claudia Silver, told the New York Times the cause was vascular dementia.

The 1975 independent film “Hester Street” was the story of a Jewish immigrant couple in the 1890s. The low-budget black and white film, in Yiddish with English subtitles, proved a hard sell to studios, and was eventually financed by her husband, real estate developer Raphael D. Silver. It won rave reviews and earned $5 million at the box office, an impressive amount at the time. The 21-year old Carol Kane was nominated for a best actress Oscar for her role as the wife, Gitl.

The 1988 romantic comedy “Crossing Delancey” was also set in Manhattan’s Lower East Side Jewish community. Starring Amy Irving, Sylvia Miles and Peter Riegert,...
