“I would love to go on ‘All Stars,’” Peppermint tells me on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast. A new Broadway season has started, and there are currently seven productions of musicals set to open this fall. Could we be seeing any of them contend at next year’s Tony Awards? Below is an overview of the plot of each musical as well as the awards history of its author, cast, creative team, and the opening and (where applicable) closing dates.

“Almost Famous” (previews begin October 3; opens November 3)

In this stage musical adaptation of Cameron Crowe’s 2000 Academy Award-winning film, William Miller is an idealistic 15-year-old aspiring music journalist. When Rolling Stone magazine hires him to go on the road with an up-and-coming band, he is thrust into the rock-and-roll circus, where his love of music, his longing for friendship, and his integrity as a writer collide.

This musical has a book written by Crowe, who also co-wrote the score with Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Tom Kitt.

Drag is an essential art form of the queer community. It was not until recently that Drag Queens became a substantial and influential part of the entertainment industry, finally expanding into television series like RuPaul’s Drag Race and Aj and the Queen, movies like Kinky Boots (which is also a musical), and even Broadway musicals like Head Over Heels.

Kevin Bacon and his acoustic guitar were back on the farm this Sunday as the actor and burgeoning TikTok star performed Beyoncé’s “Heated” for a pair of goats.

Pose star Angelica Ross is set to make her Broadway debut in Chicago this September, her arrival marking a historic moment for both the musical and the industry.

Ross will star as Roxie Hart, the aspiring actress turned murderess, in Broadway’s second longest-running musical. She is the first openly trans actress in the role, and among one of the first known trans actresses to star in a leading role in a Broadway musical.

The activist, executive producer, president of Miss Ross, Inc. and founder of TransTech Social Enterprises will begin her run at the Ambassador Theater on Sept. 12, with the American Horror Story star playing an eight-week limited engagement through Nov. 6. Earlier this year, Pamela Anderson portrayed the same character for her own limited run during the spring.

Kevin Bacon joined Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show for a segment called “First Drafts of Rock,” which saw the pair performing an alternate version of Tears for Fears’ 1985 song “Head Over Heels.”

Standing in for Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, complete with ’80s haircuts, Bacon and Fallon showcased the supposed “first draft” of the New Wave song. While the original tune opens with “I wanted to be with you alone / and talk about the weather,” this version takes the discussion of the weather to the next level.

Though the title sounds like an Sctv parody of a Bergman film, Joan Micklin Silver’s dramedy was first released in 1979 as Head Over Heels and was very obviously a romantic comedy. Since the box office was underwhelming, distributors lopped off the original’s happy ending and changed the name. Voila, a more successful film. Go figure. John Heard and Mary Beth Hurt play the on again-off again lovers.

For its 100th episode, Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa scripted what is easily the show’s most audacious episode. “The Jughead Paradox” had the unenviable task of wrapping up the entire “Rivervale” saga and setting the stage for the rest of the series’ sixth season — which will air when the show returns in the spring. That alone would be enough of a challenge for any writer to tackle, yet Aguirre-Sacasa ups the creative ante by having the installment also become a meta funhouse mirror reflection of itself by reinserting long-gone characters into the narrative and having characters reflect on nearly every ridiculous thing that has ever happened during the series. Oh yeah, there is also the plotline about parallel universes colliding into each other and threatening to wipe out the whole of existence unless Jughead can save the day.

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” is simply beyond a global phenomenon. The World of Wonder breakthrough series has won the Competition Series Emmy Award four straight times and RuPaul Charles has won best Host for a Reality-Competition series six straight times. There are currently international editions in the UK, Thailand, Canada, Spain, Italy, Holland, and Down Under (Australia and New Zealand) with France and the Phillippines on the way. Winners and contestants have sold out arenas on global tours, starred on Broadway (“Head over Heels”), Oscar-nominated movies (“A Star is Born”), and launched their own Emmy-nominated HBO series (“We’re Here”).

Writing a book has always been a goal for Alaska Thunderfuck 5000. In fact, she’s got a rather ambitious three-step plan for herself: “The big things are the book, the movie and then the made-for-tv movie.”

The “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars” winner swears to tell “the T, the whole T and nothing but the T” in her new memoir out Nov. 9, “My Name’s Yours, What’s Alaska?”

While the book brings a fair share of belly laughs, Alaska is also unafraid to face her past head-on with a candid account of her upbringing, her relationship (and public breakup) with fellow “Drag Race” winner Sharon Needles and her drag journey.

“I want to be able to talk about things in a real way, because I think that it was a way for me to learn from my past and my journey. And hopefully other people can too,” she tells Variety.

In telling the story of champion alpine ski racer Franz Klammer, one of Austria’s most revered and beloved sports heroes, director Andreas Schmied forewent the usual biopic tropes, focusing instead on a few fateful days that culminated in his victory at the 1976 Olympics in Innsbruck. It was that focus that ultimately convinced Klammer to give the film, “Chasing the Line,” a thumbs up. The movie world premieres at the Zurich Film Festival, which opens Thursday.

Other attempts had been made at telling Klammer’s story on film over the years, but none had succeeded. When producer Jakob Pochlatko of Vienna-based Epo-Film approached Schmied with the project, the director embraced the opportunity.

“I grew up with Franz Klammer – everybody in Austria did,” Schmied says, stressing Klammer’s enduring popularity in the country. “I knew what a big deal Franz is.”

Booksmart star Beanie Feldstein has been set to star as Fanny Brice in Funny Girl, which will serve as the first Broadway revival of the iconic musical that premiered in 1964 with Barbra Streisand in the role. It is scheduled to begin performances in spring 2022 at a Broadway theatre to be announced.

The new production is being directed by Tony winner Michael Mayer, with choreography by Ellenore Scott, tap choreography by Ayodele Casel, a revised book Harvey Fierstein and scenic design by David Zinn. The revival is from Sonia Friedman Productions, Scott Landis and Chocolate Factory Productions.

Joan Micklin Silver, who forged her own way as a female director in the 1970s and ’80s and helmed seven features including “Crossing Delancey” and “Hester Street,” died Thursday in Manhattan. She was 85.

Her daughter, Claudia Silver, told the New York Times the cause was vascular dementia.

The 1975 independent film “Hester Street” was the story of a Jewish immigrant couple in the 1890s. The low-budget black and white film, in Yiddish with English subtitles, proved a hard sell to studios, and was eventually financed by her husband, real estate developer Raphael D. Silver. It won rave reviews and earned $5 million at the box office, an impressive amount at the time. The 21-year old Carol Kane was nominated for a best actress Oscar for her role as the wife, Gitl.
