A live-action TV adaptation of Hasbro’s Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game has run out of hit points at Paramount+, which had given the project an eight-episode, straight-to-series order back in January 2023.

A live-action Dungeons & Dragons TV series was in development for Paramount+ and had even been given an eight-episode, straight-to-series order by the streaming service, but Deadline now reports that the project is no longer moving forward.
However, the Dungeons & Dragons series isn’t entirely dead, as Hasbro Entertainment will be shopping it to other potential buyers. It’s also said the series will receive a creative update which will be tackled by a new creative team. The version which was sold to Paramount+ was overseen by Rawson Marshall Thurber (Skyscraper), who wrote the pilot script and was going to direct the first episode. Drew Crevello (WeCrashed) was brought on to serve as executive producer and showrunner last year.
The report states that Hasbro remains committed to the Dungeons & Dragons TV series, meaning that it will likely be a matter of when, not if, the project emerges elsewhere.

Exclusive: Paramount+ has opted not to proceed with its live-action series based on Hasbro’s wildly popular Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game franchise.
The move comes almost a year and a half after the Paramount streamer in January 2023 gave the project an eight-episode, straight-to-series order. At the time, it was a co-production between Hasbro-owned eOne, which had developed the series, and Paramount Pictures.
Now shepherded by Hasbro’s in-house division Hasbro Entertainment following eOne’s December 2023 sale to Lionsgate, the project will undergo a creative update before being taken out to other potential buyers, both production partners and platforms, sources said.
The changes will include a new creative team. The version, which sold to Paramount+, was from creator Rawson Marshall Thurber, who wrote the pilot script and was set to direct the first episode. He was subsequently joined by Drew Crevello, who came on board in April 2023 as executive producer and showrunner.

Robotic dogs may be a huge advance for humankind, but they feel like harbingers of the apocalypse, which makes them perfect fodder for the second episode of Evil’s final season.

Game development comes with its own set of hurdles, and even acclaimed titles like Baldur’s Gate 3 can’t avoid these hardships. This has become more apparent in the modern gaming landscape, considering how much more expensive developing games has gotten and the constant fear of whether or not the title will resonate with the audience.
Dungeons and Dragons is a massive franchise that many gamers are familiar with, but simultaneously, it’s still a niche brand that may not have connected well with mainstream players. And with a layered title like Larian Studios’ Game of the Year, there’s always the possibility of something going wrong.
Doubt Played a Major Role in the Development of Baldur’s Gate 3
Baldur’s Gate 3 ended up being the biggest game of 2023, but confidence levels were fluctuating before its launch.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.

Hi, intrepid heroes! The season finale of indie streamer Dropout’s highly popular “Dungeons & Dragons” series “Dimension 20” drops Wednesday, bringing what creator and game master Brennan Lee Mulligan promises to be an epic conclusion to “Fantasy High: Junior Year.”
Ahead of the episode’s release on Dropout (which is also the name of the platform’s parent company that rebranded from College Humor last fall under CEO Sam Reich) Mulligan spoke with Variety about the success of the “Dimension 20” franchise, including the scheduled Jan. 24, 2025, live show’s almost-immediate sellout of Madison Square Garden last month, the fact the streaming series is not yet eligible to be submitted for an Emmy, and the next season of “Dimension 20’s” popular “Dungeons and Drag Queens” series.

There are a lot of streamers out there, but none quite like Dropout. “I’m a determined hipster,” jokes Dropout owner and CEO Sam Reich. “I can’t do anything that the rest of the industry is doing — I’m just too determined to be unique.”
Unique is not difficult to find on Dropout, which was created in 2018 as a subscription service for CollegeHumor content before CHMedia rebranded to Dropout in 2023. Take Game Changer, hosted by Reich, where the premise changes every episode and the contestants must learn the rules as they play. This season alone has seen an elaborate version of Simon Says, a parody of The Newlywed Game and a simple trivia game-turned-scavenger hunt where contestants need to search the studio for buzzers to answer questions.

Okay, the big Summer blockbusters are coming in “hot”, but there’s no reason for the offbeat “indies” to sit on the sidelines till the Fall. At least that must be the intent of the fine folks at A24, who are still basking in the box office of their biggest hit, Civil War. Ah, but this one is a true “test” for the studio’s fervent fans. It’s a truly “out there” ode to several small screen touchstones for ” 90’s kids”. In fact, you could probably have an interesting game of “checking off” winks and nods to some “cult faves”. Oh, but there’s much more happening in this exploration of suburban teen life as its young hero seems to be energized by the tube’s warmth as he swears that I Saw The TV Glow.

Stranger Things is one of the most iconic pieces of sci-fi horror of this generation. The Netflix series quickly amassed a mass following after the first season, and the numbers kept climbing with every subsequent season. The end of the series in 2022 was a much-awaited event, and it spawned many collaborations with other pop culture franchises.
One of these was Dead by Daylight, the asymmetrical online multiplayer that allows players to become their favorite supernatural villains. Given the theme of the game, Stranger Things fits right into the mix, and we now have another addition from the series coming to the game.

Save for a couple of unfortunate attempts, Prime Video has really been on a streak of great adaptations in the 2020s so far. Apart from the more mainstream examples of that, the streamer released an animated TV show based on an iconic tabletop game franchise which, in many fans’ eyes, is the best adaptation of said game’s universe to date.
Misfit Adventurers to Return Later in 2024
Created by Critical Role, The Legend of Vox Machina is an epic animated series based on Dungeons & Dragons. It’s often dubbed as the best D&d adaptation out there even despite Honor Among Thieves’ existence. Like the latter, Vox Machina follows a group of misfit adventurers who are dragged into the whole “saving the world” business right from their favorite tavern.
First in The Washington Post article and then on Critical Role CEO Travis Willingham’s X account, the confirmations of Season 3 suddenly appeared.

Dragons play a prominent role in many fantasy stories from The Hobbit to A Song of Ice and Fire to Dungeons & Dragons. They’re not as central to the plot of The Witcher, but they do help the main characters come to terms with their destiny in both the books by author Andrzej Sapkowski and the Netflix adaptation. Dragons are complicated creatures, so we’ll break down everything that’s been revealed about them.
Be warned: Spoilers for The Witcher are ahead.

The Fallout game series was one of the pioneers of GenX and Millennial storytelling.
When creators Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky created a post-apocalyptic vision of human civilization gone awry (but never one to lose its sense of humor), the open world narrative eschewed labels of Good and Evil.
The Fallout universe was made of multiple factions, each one selfish, every character a survivalist in their own way.
These political and social plots explored the diversity of human thinking, teaching us concepts of anarchy that were foreign to even 1990s American cinema.
Now that the Fallout series on Prime based on the Bethesda game has debuted, it has the nearly impossible task of trying to humanize a game that was all but designed to escape humanity.
The show is a big hit and most likely the best video game to TV show adaptation we will ever see, thanks to the clever mind of Jonathan Nolan.

Tiffany Haddish has addressed a viral moment from her stand-up performance at this weekend’s Netflix Is a Joke Festival, where she called out the protests happening on college campuses against the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.
When speaking to TMZ in a video on Monday, Haddish acknowledged the response to her comments and said, “I think if they are going to protest for one place they should protest for all the places that are having genocide happening. How many Black people got to die before we can get a protest? … If you want to protest? Protest. Role-playing game fans had a field day with last year’s Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, a comedy caper film adapted from Wizards of the Coast’s world-famous tabletop board game.
The movie really understood what the game was about and carried over the whole D&d experience to the screen, from strange-sounding location names and authentic character depictions to, well, dungeons and dragons.
The film is styled as an emulation of a Dungeons & Dragons game session and takes place in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting from the original’s multiverse.
It is ostensibly a picaresque movie, with the main characters trying to pull a heist on a sleazy lord in the film’s fantasy universe, and there are some quality laughs for good comedic measure, but the heart of the film’s storytelling is in following the source closely.
That said, the film is not quite consistent when getting into the specifics.

Sharing the sentiments of the majority of gamers, Todd Howard praised a game and developer that took the world by storm last year, winning numerous accolades in the process. Not only did the title manage to win the prestigious Game of the Year award at The Game Awards, but it also showcased how much dedication was put into it by the studio. Led by Swen Vincke, the team brought Dungeons and Dragons to the mainstream in a masterful way.
And the Fallout director suggests that its success didn’t come out of nowhere, given the developer’s previous track record.

Spider-Man 4 rumors are running wild, but the potential involvement of Steven Spielberg and Christopher Nolan has to be the craziest of them all. The film has already been through a number of plausible directors, but none seem to fit the requirements of either Sony or Marvel. One industry insider took the time to call out the false information about Spider-Man 4 directors, and he debunked the theories about four famous filmmakers.
Some wild speculations are circulating online about the director of the next Spider-Man project after No Way Home
Finding a replacement for Jon Watts, who directed the first three movies, hasn’t been easy. Both Marvel and Sony look to create a phenomenal film that could outperform the box office of Spider-Man: No Way Home. However, their visions for the fourth film are very different.

Dimension 20, Dropout‘s Dungeons & Dragons show, is coming to Madison Square Garden for a night of live Ttrpg adventure.
Dimension 20: Gauntlet at the Garden will bring together the full D20 squad, including dungeon master Brennan Lee Mulligan and players Emily Axford, Ally Beardsley, Brian Murphy, Zac Oyama, Siobhan Thompson, and Lou Wilson, who’ve been dungeoning and dragoning together since 2018.
The show will be part of the group’s Unsleeping City campaign, which is set in a fictional (as far as we know…) and clandestine sixth borough of New York City that’s powered by magic and populated by supernatural residents. So, of course, it is appropriate that the event–which is Dimension 20‘s first U.S. live show since 2019–is also taking place in NYC.

Back in 2008, a music video landed on YouTube — then still largely in its infancy and mostly dominated by amateur video footage — and caused a bit of a stir, amassing a cult following and 1 million views. More than 15 years on, the video has morphed — extremely slowly — into a full-length feature film.
Chris Dane Owens’ upbeat love song “Shine on Me” was already a catchy slice of rock with some heavy ’80s inspirations. But it was the epic accompanying video — which he made for $70,000, no small sum in today’s music video world — that proved to be the real hit, largely for squeezing into its four minutes practically every clichéd trope and inspiration from popular swords-and-sorcery fantasy entertainment. “The Princess Bride” features prominently, but then there are elements of “Xena,” “The Lord of the Rings,” “The Chronicles of Narnia,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Dungeons and Dragons” and many, many more.

In the movie Dream Scenario, starring Nicholas Cage, a biology professor named Paul Matthews starts appearing in the nightmares of random people all over the country.
None of these people understand why, nor do they know anything about Paul beyond recognizing his unusual face -- which gives them flashbacks of the terrible dream.
Paul himself is perplexed because he has not intentionally done anything to these people, nor is he a Freddy Krueger-type monster who controls a higher plane of existence.
But when Paul becomes infamous for his cameo appearances in peoples' dreams, he begins to see scorn, fear, hatred, and eventually violence coming from people who hold him personally responsible for their nightmares.
As I finished Dream Scenario, I realized this is what some right-leaning celebrities must feel like.

Justice Smith, last seen in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, and The Holdovers breakout Dominic Sessa are ready to take over the magic stage.
The duo have closed deals to join Barbie actress Ariana Greenblatt in Now You See Me 3, Lionsgate’s latest installment of its heist-with-magicians thrillers.
The trio are the newcomers to the caper, with original cast members Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco and Morgan Freeman expected to reprise their roles as thieving illusionists.
Plot details are being kept up a sleeve but the new feature will once again delve into the world of the illusionists and the bickering and sneaky quartet known as the Four Horsemen while introducing audiences to a new generation of magicians.
Ruben Fleischer will be sitting in the director’s chair when cameras roll. Eric Warren Singer, Seth Grahame-Smith and Mike Lesslie wrote the script while Bobby Cohen and Alex Kurtzman produce.

In his feature directorial debut, actor and comedian Jerry Seinfeld also stars in an upcoming comedy movie titled Unfrosted: The Pop Tart Story, based on a screenplay he co-wrote with a team of writers. His team of writers included Spike Feresten, Barry Marder, and Andy Robin. The movie stars Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Amy Schumer, James Marsden, Hugh Grant, Dan Levy, and more, in addition to Seinfeld leading the cast.
The movie, which is scheduled to make its debut on Netflix in May, is loosely based on the true story of the creation of Pop-Tarts toaster pastries. The actor-comedian reportedly deconstructed his Pop Tart stand-up bit from his last Netflix special, 23 Hours to Kill, and explored it into a giant comedy movie. The debutant director talks about casting Hugh Grant in the movie.
