This is such a wonderful little film. It is extremely well-produced and I recall being so thrilled to see it back in the early '90s when there were far fewer lesbian images in cinema. I have to say that the other user comment here, from the "red blooded" guy who goes on and on about the lesbian sex, is a bit yucky. And I must add that, as a red-blooded lesbian myself, this is a terrific lesbian film that lesbians will enjoy especially because they are the audience for whom it was made -- yes, it premiered at the London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival before going on to win scads of awards at gay film festivals across the world. I, too, hope it will be released on DVD some time very soon.

This movie is now available for download from the British Film Institute website at a cost of £3.50, so it is great to be able to access it again.
I first saw this movie as part of a Channel 4 series of gay/lesbian shorts and to me it demonstrates what short movies do well. They can often explore the dream-like and fantastical, yet at the same time also address reality.
What I liked about 'Rosebud' is that it is about an independent young woman's realisation of her sexuality through witnessing the straight forward activities of her lesbian neighbours. It is not lascivious, though it is sexy. Viewers looking for 'girl-on-girl' action will be disappointed. Rather you see an unfolding of the heroine's consciousness through her dreams and her painting. Her neighbours are passive rather than active encouragement to this realisation. As her mural shows it is like angels revealing a lovely secret to her. Like many people, conventionality has meant she has not been exposed to anything rather than myths of lesbianism, and coming to the city and her own apartment allows her to see a different truth.
The lack of dialogue gives the movie intimacy as it is as if you are seeing it very much in the first-person and sharing her thoughts. Despite the fantasy elements it demonstrates a lesbian lifestyle in London and though things probably never run this smoothly in real life, it is nice to see how they could be. Overall, a touching coming-out short which might encourage some viewers to take the challenge of addressing their true sexuality by seeing the potential happiness they might be denying themselves.

One of the best shorts films about sexuality ever done. Great musical inspiration of Rita Lynch in the fascinating world upon the roofs of love between Women... Pay attention in the eyes game between characters.
OK it's short and there's no dialogue, but it's wonderfully filmed with a great soundtrack. Julie Graham is a very beautiful woman and a much under-rated actress. To my knowledge this film only ever appeared on British TV once, and I'm guessing not many people have actually seen it. I think it deserves to be shown regularly. The fact that I still remember it 15 years on shows that it made a great impact on me, as I'm sure it would with anyone who gets to see it.
I suspect at the time it was considered a little too adult and arty, but I think modern audiences would warm to it. If you get a chance to see it, then do so. Channel 4 if you're taking note, please put this on air again so that, if nothing else, I can record it!

ROSEBUD features no dialogue and no real plot. The story consists of a young woman ( Played by the very attractive Julie Graham ) who accidentally comes across her two lesbian neighbours making love on a roof top and the young woman ( Played by the very attractive Julie Graham. Good casting by the way ) fantasizing about gay love and then finding and accepting herself as a lesbian . This is a truly great masterwork of cinema featuring several scenes of naked pretty young women making love . If like me - and just about every red blooded man on the planet - you believe there`s nothing wrong with same sex relationships as long as it features pretty young women putting on a public show then you will not only want to see this film but want to buy it on video and watch it again and again and again. If you`re a gay man you`ll think this is the worst film ever made
10/10 And perhaps one day we`ll see a big budget Hollywood remake starring Penelope Cruz and Kate Beckinsale. Oh yes please
