Despite Poor Reviews and Box Office Run, This Angelina Jolie Rom-Com Is Now a Hit Online 23 Years Later
Image
Angelina Jolie is mostly known as a highly profitable action star, especially for her run in the early 2000s. Even at the height of her stardom, her projects were plagued with poor reviews.

Her 2002 rom-com Life or Something Like It was no exception. Even though it premiered three years after her Oscar for 1999's Girl, Interrupted, and in the midst of her Tomb Raider fame, the rom-com was a major critical and commercial failure. However, many projects get an afterlife on streaming, and Tudum reports Jolie's Life or Something Like It was a major hit on Netflix following its debut on streaming.

For the week between Apr. 14 and 20, Life or Something Like It debuted in third place in the global charts. The rom-com received encouraging numbers, with 5.5 million views and 9.6 million hours viewed.

Life or Something Like It debuted in the Top 10 in 24 countries across South and North America,...

Wtf Happened to Gone in 60 Seconds?
Image
Is there any contemporary actor more iconic than Nicolas Cage? Instantly identifiable and beloved by both mainstream audiences and cult aficionados, it’s hard to believe that there was a time when Nicolas Cage wasn’t considered a bankable leading man. While movies like Raising Arizona and Moonstruck established him as a quirky lead, in 1990, he made an action movie called Fire Birds, which was like Top Gun with helicopters and whiffed at the box office. He had a solid hit as a romantic lead in Honeymoon in Vegas. However, in 1995, the same year he delivered an Academy Award-winning performance in Leaving Las Vegas, he was still considered so minor of a star that David Caruso took top billing over him in their remake of Kiss of Death – which – by the way – was another flop. However, that all changed when uber producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer decided Cage had potential as an action hero,...

Nicolas Cage's Action Movie With Timothy Olyphant Isn't Great
Image
He didn't have a lead role in Gone in 60 Seconds, but Timothy Olyphant was front and center for a good portion of the movie. The action heist movie from 2000 was a loose remake of the 1974 flick of the same name and starred Nicolas Cage, Angelina Jolie, Giovanni Ribisi, Robert Duvall, and a diverse ensemble cast.

Cage played Randal "Memphis" Raines, a reformed car thief who gets pulled back an auto-theft ring to save his brother, Kip (Ribisi), after he was kidnapped. As Memphis returns to boosting cars, the appearances of his former love interest, Sara "Sway" Wayland (Jolie), Sphinx (Vinnie Jones), and Otto Halliwell(Duvall) as well as the Detectives Castlebeck and Drycoff (Delroy Lindo and Olyphant) both complicate and help him in his efforts.

Gone in 60 Seconds has become a cult classic, albeit one the critics did not like. With its lackluster Rotten Tomatoes score and negative reviews aside,...

The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent Cast & Character Guide
Image
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent cast and character guide. Directed by Tom Gormican from a screenplay by him and Kevin Etten, the film breaks the fourth wall by having Nicolas Cage portraying a fictional version of himself — Nick Cage, an actor who can no longer land a major studio role and is in a lot of debt despite having starred in blockbusters like National Treasure. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is a rare movie wherein an actor playing a version of themselves works on many levels.

The plot combines various genres and leans quite a bit into the buddy comedy aspect. It’s unclear where Gormican and Etten may have gotten the idea for the movie, but Cage certainly has no issue spoofing parts of his career and making meta jokes about the films he’s made and the movie industry at large. Nicolas Cage is joined by a fantastic cast,...

Eminem Almost Starred in 'The Fast and the Furious'
Image
Marshall Bruce Mathers III, aka, Eminem, raps fast. He could also have been driving fast if fate had played out differently. In 1998, a Vibe magazine article "Racer X" by Ken Li, was published, detailing an underground street racing operation in New York City. The story soon caught Hollywood’s interest. With the help of David Ayer, director Rob Cohen — a master of fortitude — put his stamp on the action-driven drama with heartwarming human interactions and tone-perfect characterization.

When Angelina Jolie Walked Away From Charlie’s Angels For This Reason
Image
Was Angelina Jolie almost cast in Charlie’s Angels? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Remember when Angelina Jolie had a golden opportunity to strut her stuff alongside Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore in Charlie’s Angels? Yep, back in 2000, she was all set to join the action-packed girl gang but said, “Thanks, but no thanks!” Why would a rising star with an Oscar on the horizon turn down such a juicy role? Let’s dive into this wild ride of a decision.

At the time, Jolie was on fire! With hits like The Bone Collector and Girl, Interrupted, she was on her path to literal stardom. Columbia Pictures thought Charlie’s Angels would be the icing for her career. They rolled out the red carpet, pitching it hard. “When [Columbia Pictures] sent me the script for Charlie’s Angels, they said there hadn’t been perfect, strong roles for women, that it would make me a big star,...

Quick Links Gone in 60 Seconds Initially Received a Mixed Critical Reception Gone in 60 Seconds Is a Fun Though Flawed Remake

One of Nicolas Cage's early films has gotten a bad reputation. Slammed by critics but embraced by audiences, Gone in 60 Seconds has become a classic among action fans and car lovers alike and has even been called a likely predecessor to one of today's more exuberant film series, The Fast and the Furious. A loose remake of the 1974 H. B. Halicki film of the same name, Gone in 60 Seconds was directed by Dominic Sena and written by Scott Rosenberg. Released in June 2000, the film received a mixed critical reception but remains an entertaining film worth a watch. And now, it's available on streaming.

How Hollywood’s Favorite ’70s Sports Car Inspired the New Ferrari
Image
No 1970s car exudes more Hollywood allure than the Ferrari 365 Gtb/4, known colloquially as the “Daytona.” Not only was it coveted by movie stars and rock gods, but it had several memorable screen appearances itself. One played a significant role in Robert Altman’s Elliott Gould-starring ode to Film Noir, The Long Goodbye. Perhaps most famously, a convertible version starred in 1976’s A Star Is Born, with Kris Kristofferson at the wheel and Barbra Streisand in the passenger seat.

Now, just as that movie inspired an acclaimed remake a few years back, the 365 Gtb/4 is having a revival. Ferrari design head Flavio Manzoni likes to suggest that all cars from the Italian exotic automaker are of-the-moment, reflecting their time. But he has not been shy in discussing the historical inspiration for the brand’s new, $459,000 two-seater, the 12Cilindri. Manzoni has said quite clearly that the front end and overall shape echo the Daytona.

Nicolas Cage: Net Worth, Age, Height & Everything You Need To Know About The Actor
Image
Nicolas Cage is one of Hollywood's most recognizable faces, but he doesn't exactly have the net worth to match. With a career spanning over four decades, the actor's versatility is unmatched, and Cage's massive filmography has seen him star in everything from action-packed blockbusters like National Treasure and Face/Off to critically acclaimed dramas such as Leaving Las Vegas, for which he won an Academy Award. Though the past decade has seen Cage take on many sub-par projects, he's made a return to form with the likes of Longlegs and Dream Scenario.

Born Nicolas Kim Coppola in Long Beach, California, Cage hails from a prestigious Hollywood familyhis uncle is director Francis Ford Coppola. However, Nicolas wanted to make it as an actor on his own terms without being accused of nepotism, so he changed his name to Cage, after Luke Cage, the Marvel superhero (via Celebrity Net Worth). Giovanni Ribisi Turns to Cinematography for ‘Strange Darling’ — and Creates a Modern Horror Masterpiece
Image
Writer/director Jt Mollner‘s “Strange Darling” (in theaters August 23) is a horror film that immediately grabs the viewer’s attention with the vividness and intensity of its imagery. The opening scene of the movie about the final months of a serial killer opens on a terrifying chase scene in flashes of black-and-white, then moves from one distinctive set piece to another, shifting between bold palettes to use color, light, and framing to recalibrate the viewer’s understanding of the unpredictable relationship at the movie’s center. Mollner throws down the gauntlet with an opening title card informing the audience that this is a movie shot on 35mm film; from that point forward, every richly textured image exists to demonstrate just why it was so important to shoot on celluloid, and to alternately delay and reveal the movie’s many thrilling surprises.

Aside from the plot twists, there’s another big surprise in “Strange Darling,...

At the beginning of the 21st century, fans of heist movies were delightfully treated with popular and influential releases by prestigious filmmakers like Guy Ritchie and Steven Soderbergh. 1 Surprising Detail About Nicolas Cage's Upcoming Horror Movie Makes It Even More Exciting
Image
Longlegs' marketing strategy focuses on creating intrigue and fear of the unknown, setting it apart from other horror films. Despite Nicolas Cage being the lead in Longlegs, the film purposely limits his appearance in trailers to heighten audience curiosity. Oz Perkins' atmospheric directing style paired with Cage's horror acting experience almost guarantees Longlegs' success in 2024.

One surprising detail about Nicolas Cage's new highly-anticipated horror film effectively raises even more hype surrounding its release. Right from the early years of his career, Nicolas Cage did not hold himself back from exploring diverse movie genres and pushing the boundaries of his acting abilities. From action flicks like Gone in 60 Seconds and Con Air to romantic dramas like City of Angels and The Family Man, Nicolas Cage's acting portfolio includes a wide range of films that perfectly showcase his acting versatility.

However, in recent years, the actor has had somewhat of...

Delroy Lindo Joins Michael B. Jordan in Ryan Coogler’s Untitled Supernatural Thriller (Exclusive)
Image
Delroy Lindo is heading back to the big screen.

The actor, who in recent years has starred in Hulu’s Unprisoned and appeared in Netflix’s The Harder They Fall, has closed a deal to join Michael B. Jordan in the untitled supernatural horror thriller that Ryan Coogler is directing for Warner Bros.

Little is known about that project — and what is known has yet to be confirmed by either the studio or Coogler. Insiders say the feature is set in the Jim Crow-era South, and possibly involves both vampires and Southern supernatural traditions. Jordan may be playing dual roles — as twin brothers.

Lindo’s part is being kept in the coffin but one source describes it as having a musical element to it. The feature is gearing for shoot later this spring in New Orleans, and recently cast Jack O’Connell as a villain.

Coogler wrote the script and is...

10 Action Movie Remakes That Actually Improved On The Original
Image
Action movies can benefit from remakes as new directors and choreographers bring fresh perspectives to familiar stories. A good movie remake should add new ideas and style to the original, sometimes surpassing the original completely. Remakes like Ben-Hur, Scarface, and Heat have proven that a fresh take on existing material can lead to iconic cinema.

Common knowledge dictates that remakes are never as good as the originals, but there are plenty of great action movies which subvert this trend. Action movies need a compelling plot to function, but new directors and action choreographers can breathe new life into familiar stories. This makes action movies perfect for remakes. Sometimes all a movie needs to succeed is a different style. There have been plenty of unnecessary movie remakes over the years, but not all remakes should immediately be disregarded because of this trend.

A good movie remake should still bring new ideas to the table,...

Angelina Jolie Can Complete Her Comeback By Returning To $487 Million Action Movie Role
Image
Angelina Jolie's recent return to action roles sets the stage for a possible comeback in the hit show Mr. and Mrs. Smith season 2. The show's expanding cast could benefit from Jolie's potential reprise as Mrs. Smith or in a new intriguing role within the series. Jolie's successful history in the action genre makes her a perfect fit for the show's smart and creative approach to storytelling.

Angelina Jolie's most recent movies saw her return to action roles and revisiting one role from a popular, $487 million action movie would complete the comeback. While she was largely away from acting from 2016 until 2020, that year saw her return to participate in four films over the next two years. Several of Angelina Jolie's roles in 2021 included a return to the action genre, something that she dominated earlier in her career.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Angelina Jolie played in some...

Every Planned Fast & Furious Movie That Didn’t Happen (& Why)
Image
Vin Diesel was not the first choice for the role of Dominic Toretto in The Fast and the Furious. The studio initially wanted Timothy Olyphant, and there are significant differences between the original project and the final result. Vin Diesel did not return for 2 Fast 2 Furious, the only movie in the main saga without him or Paul Walker. However, a The Fast and the Furious sequel with Diesel could have happened. Vin Diesel was originally supposed to star in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, but the studio wanted a high school setting instead. He made a cameo at the end of the film.

Fast & Furious has gone from a low-stakes, standalone movie to a full-on blockbuster franchise, but not every envisioned project has become a reality. The Fast Saga premiered in 2001 with Paul Walker and Vin Diesel as lead actors, and it ended up spreading over 11 movies,...

Hal Hartley in Meanwhile (2011)
The Criterion Channel Announce September Lineup: Hal Hartley, High School Horror, Peggy Sue Got Married & More
Hal Hartley in Meanwhile (2011)
Few American filmmakers of the last 40 years await a major rediscovery like Hal Hartley, whose traces in modern movies are either too-minor or entirely unknown. Thus it’s cause for celebration that the Criterion Channel are soon launching a major retrospective: 13 features (which constitutes all but My America) and 17 shorts, a sui generis style and persistent vision running across 30 years. Expect your Halloween party to be aswim in Henry Fool costumes.

Speaking of: there’s a one-month headstart on seasonal programming with the 13-film “High School Horror”––most notable perhaps being a streaming premiere for the uncut version of Suspiria, plus the rare opportunity to see a Robert Rodriguez movie on the Criterion Channel––and a retrospective of Hong Kong vampire movies. A retrospective of ’70s car movies offer chills and thrills of a different sort

Six films by Allan Dwan and 12 “gaslight noirs” round out the main September series; The Eight Mountains,...

Best Racing Movies to Watch Before Gran Turismo
Image
Gran Turismo is the latest movie to be a based on a video game, but this coming-of-age sports movie is biographical and based on real events. Gran Turismo is inspired by the story of Jann Mardenborough, an avid gamer of the titular racer who tries to transition into driving real race cars.

Gran Turismo stars Archie Madekwe as Jann, with Orlando Bloom, David Harbour and Djimon Hounsou filling out an impressive cast. While it will appeal to fans of the Gran Turismo games, the film will also have the thrills and spills of classic high-octane racers. There are plenty of appropriate racing movies to watch before Gran Turismo, whether they focus on the professional and competitive sides of racing, or in highlighting the risks of driving under pressure at high speeds.

Post your questions for Jonathan Rhys Meyers
Henry VIII
What’s it like to play Dracula? And Henry VIII and Elvis? And play tennis for Woody Allen? Only one man can say, and he’s waiting to tell all about his versatile career

Jonathan Rhys Meyers has played everyone from Elvis (in 2005 miniseries Elvis) to Dracula (in 2013 TV series Dracula) and Henry VIII in The Tudors (the latter earning him two Golden Globe nominations.) On film, he’s helped out Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible III, played bisexual glam rocker Brian Slade in Velvet Goldmine and, of course, coached football to Keira Knightley and Parminder Nagra in Bend It Like Beckham. And let’s not forget Woody Allen’s Match Point, in which he plays social climbing tennis pro Chris Wilton who has the hots for Scarlett Johansson.

Now Rhys Meyers embraces his inner Jack Bauer in high-octane thriller 97 Minutes, playing an Interpol agent embedded deep in a terrorist cell,...

Sylvester Stallone and Michael B. Jordan in Creed (2015)
What’s New on Amazon Prime Video in June 2023
Sylvester Stallone and Michael B. Jordan in Creed (2015)
If you’re wondering what’s new on Amazon Prime Video in June, the answer is a lot. The streamer has a solid slate of movies heading into summer 2023. From the first two “Creed” films to “Love, Rosie,” “Yours, Mine & Ours” and other clever romantic comedies, the streamer has a range of options for viewers with different tastes. Newer theatrical releases arriving on the streamer in June include “TÁR,” “Armageddon Time,” and “M3GAN.”

TV premieres to look forward to include Boots Riley’s “I’m A Virgo” and the fourth and final season of John Krasinski’s “Jack Ryan.” “Crazy Rich Asians” arrives early in June, followed by “Interstellar” for all Christopher Nolan and Matthew McConaughey lovers. Even though “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” doesn’t release in theaters until November, all four “Hunger Games” films land on Prime Video this June. Perfect timing — maybe even with a reread...

Amazon Prime Video New Releases: June 2023
Image
With its list of new releases for June 2023, Prime is bringing a handful of Amazon Originals and many recent movie hits to the fold.

It’s actually quite a busy month for non-American programming in Amazon Originals department. Shows and movies like Deadloch, My Fault, and Medellín all originate from outside the U.S. and U.K. For the American and British crowd, however, the streamer is debuting two big tentpoles.

The first is I’m a Virgo on June 23. Acclaimed director Boots Riley’s TV followup to Sorry to Bother You will tale the surreal and satirical tale of a giant in Oakland. That will be followed by the more conventional (assumedly) fourth season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan on June 30.

The real fireworks this month come from a ludicrously deep bench of library TV and movie titles. Give them a look for yourself below but if we were to highlight just a few,...

10 Iconic Action Movies You Didn't Realize Were Remakes
Image
There are plenty of iconic action movies that have shaped the genre, but many of them are actually remakes. Remakes happen for a variety of reasons: as a language remake to introduce popular movies to the global audience, to create a live-action version of an animated movie, which Disney in particular are keen on, or simply to recreate an old movie for new audiences to enjoy. Remakes can be a sore topic among audiences, especially when a beloved movie is butchered. Many view them as an easy cash-grab for productions, especially as audiences are intrigued by the remake - whether they approve or not.

However, remakes can be a great way to reinvent forgotten movies and plenty of iconic movies nowadays are remakes from the early 1900s. Even Disney’s live-action remakes perform surprisingly well at the box office, especially those of the older movies, because of the new audiences they introduce.

Gone In 60 Seconds Cast: Where They Are Now
Image
The cast of 2000's Gone in 60 Seconds was a diverse mix of a-list celebrities and up-and-comers, but what have the stars of the classic heist film been up to since? Kicking off the new millennium with a bang, Gone in 60 Seconds re-imagined the crime genre with a modern twist and had a star-studded cast to back up its action. Despite casting stars like Angelina Jolie and Nicolas Cage in lead roles, the movie wasn't particularly well-received by critics, but it was popular with audiences nevertheless. Even if it was somewhat nonsensical, Gone with 60 Seconds became an early-'00s classic.

The movie performed well at the box office, grossing over $200 million (via Box Office Mojo) but was considered a flop because of its high production budget and marketing costs (via Slate). Often ranked among the best-ever car movies, Gone in 60 Seconds combined the high-octane thrills of street racing...

How ‘Pig’ Became Nicolas Cage’s Cash Cow
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Enjoying renewed interest from all corners in Hollywood due to his praised performance in the 2021 indie thriller Pig, Nicolas Cage has entered what can only be called a renaissance.

After years of making indies, the actor is in demand for live-action studio films for the first time since 2011’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. While he had done occasional studio voice work, with such as films as The Croods and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, he returned in earnest with The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, a meta action movie released in April by Lionsgate in which Cage plays an actor named Nick Cage. Then he booked a chewy role as Dracula in Universal’s upcoming vampire thriller Renfield. Sources tell THR that the actor was paid 7 million to lead Massive Talent and received close to 3 million for Renfield for a supporting role.

R.I.P. stuntman Ted White, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter’s Jason Voorhees
Image
The Friday the 13th franchise is very important to me, so it always hits me hard when I hear that someone involved with the series has passed away… and last Friday night, the news broke that we have lost another Friday the 13th alumnus. Someone who played the hockey masked icon Jason Voorhees himself: stuntman Ted White. White had already been working in the entertainment industry as an actor and stuntman for thirty-five years by the time he was offered the chance to play Jason in 1984’s Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (watch it Here). It’s not a job he was thrilled to do, he didn’t even want to be credited on the movie, but he accepted it because the pay was good. As years went by, White eventually realized that he had been involved in something special and started connecting with fans at conventions.

It has...

Ted White, Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter's Jason Voorhees, Dies At 96
Image
Stuntman and actor Ted White, who played Jason Voorhees in "Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter" among other roles, has died at the age of 96. Convention owner Sean Clark confirmed the news on Facebook (via Bloody Disgusting), writing that White "passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home."

White's personal website notes that he was born on January 25, 1926, "in a small town in Texas." Inside the Nicolas Cage Tribute to ‘The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari’ That Never Got Released
Image
“The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” was already the most meta movie released this year, but one scene cut from the theatrical release took the concept much further. In director Tom Gormican’s comedy, star Nicolas Cage plays a fictionalized version of himself wrestling with a rough patch in his career, while being badgered by the imaginary “Nicky,” an abrasive manifestation of Cage’s younger self who mocks the actor for failing to achieve the greatness of his early days. In the original cut of the movie, Cage finally confronts his inner self in an ambitious black-and-white homage to “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.”

Cage has often cited the 1920 German Expressionist film as one of his favorites, and the opportunity to pay homage to its dream-like imagery was such a highlight of the experience that he continued to talk it up for the movie’s release, even though it didn’t make the final cut.
