Throughout humanity's long, sad, and seemingly endless history of making war, there has existed a naggingly evergreen question about making the perfect soldier. In a pre-technological age, this question was largely psychological, yet the advent of advanced tech started to open up more possibilities, as well as lead to more dead-ends. To wit: while fully replacing human soldiers with robots would initially seem ingenious, it could also lead to things like malfunctions and the absence of human reasoning and ingenuity. Yet a robot, loaded with a pre-made algorithm, doesn't need to be retrained, and isn't susceptible to the many vulnerabilities a human being is. Surely, there must be a way to combine the two.

Universal Soldier: The Return, starring the iconic Jean-Claude Van Damme, was released in 1999 to heavy criticism. Twenty-five years later, the film is available to stream for free.
Jean-Claude Van Damme's critically panned film Universal Soldier: The Return is now available to stream on PlutoTV. The film is a sequel to the 1992 sci-fi film Universal Soldier, and it sees Van Damme return to reprise his role as the series protagonist, Private Luc Deveraux. The film was poorly received, with just a 5% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite the first film's moderate success, Universal Soldier: The Return only grossed $10 million at the box office, failing to make back its $40 million budget.

A brutal and bloody action legacy sequel is now streaming, and finds action movie icon Jean-Claude Van Damme returning to one of his cult classic 80s sci-fi franchises. After leading the first Universal Soldier, which combines science fiction and action into a gloriously no-nonsense B-grade treat, and returning for a few much lesser follow-ups, the franchise was resurrected in 2012 with a legacy sequel led by John Wick: Chapter 4 and The Expendables 2 star Scott Adkins.
Universal Soldier: Day Of Reckoning sees Van Dammes super soldier Luc Deveraux return to the fray, but with a twist. This time, instead of leading the action as the main protagonist, the legacy sequel brings the character back as the main antagonist, with the final movie following Adkins amnesiac super soldier as he fights to discover who he really is. Being a movie star is both a blessing and a curse. The blessings are fairly obvious, but, like all things that are too good to be true, they bring with them the seeds for the curse that follows, which is that movie stardom can set actors up for that much greater a fall should they start to slip off their pedestal. Some instances of actors taking a hard fall are deserved when it's to do with their offscreen behavior, yet in instances where it's mostly to do with the projects they're involved with being subpar, it's hard not to feel sorry for them.
Take Burt Reynolds, for instance. By the end of the 1970s he was among the most well-known and highest-paid actors working, and as the 1980s rolled on he continued to work with other name stars and solid filmmakers like Dolly Parton, Don Siegel, Blake Edwards, his buddy Hal Needham,...

Jean-Claude Van Damme's science fiction films range in quality, with clear winners and losers in the lineup. The Universal Soldier series, featuring Van Damme, is the most famous and strongest of his science fiction offerings. Van Damme's best sci-fi film is Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, which explores the darker implications of the Universal Soldier program.
Primarily known for his work in martial arts films, Jean-Claude Van Damme is also no stranger to the science fiction genre, with eight distinct films in his catalog closely competing for a top slot. Keen to trade shots with firearms just as often as he is to trade punches, Van Damme is a versatile action star that can be introduced into a wide variety of settings, from the grounded and gritty to the outlandishly imaginative. Some of these films even feature Jean-Claude Van Damme's best fight scenes, finding the flexible action star plenty...

Action movie giant Michael Jai White returns to the world of satire in the latest trailer for the upcoming Western adventure flick, The Outlaw Johnny Black. Released courtesy of Samuel Goldwyn Films, The Outlaw Johnny Black has been described as the “spiritual sequel” to White’s 2009 action comedy cult hit Black Dynamite, and finds the actor and martial artist seeking vengeance in the Old West. Check out the newly released trailer for The Outlaw Johnny Black below.
“Hell bent on avenging the death of his father, Johnny Black vows to gun down Brett Clayton and becomes a wanted man in the process while posing as a preacher in a small mining town that's been taken over by a notorious Land Baron,” reads the official synopsis for The Outlaw Johnny Black, which sees Michal Jai White bring his talents for comedy, martial arts, and his effortless charm to the Western genre,...

Scott Adkins must return for the next Universal Soldier to pay off the last movie's cliffhanger. The Universal Soldier movie franchise only became stranger the more it evolved. From Roland Emmerich's original shoot-em-up to a couple of silly, non-canonical Universal Soldier TV movies or the trippy Day Of Reckoning, there's an entry to suit every mood. Jean-Claude Van Damme's Luc evolved from hero to villain in later outings too, with his performances in his first and final appearances feeling like two completely different characters. Adkins joined the series with the most recent outing, 2012's Day Of Reckoning.
Universal Soldier: Day Of Reckoning is so suffused with dread and gore that it's basically a horror movie, and finds Adkins John on a quest to find out why Luc murdered his family. During this era, Adkins was making a name for himself as the next big martial arts star. Adkins...

After over a decade since its final installment's release, Jean-Claude Van Damme's high-octane sci-fi action franchise Universal Soldier deserves a revisit — but this time as a full-fledged reboot, not as a remake or a sequel. Despite receiving a lukewarm response from viewers and critics, 1992's Universal Soldier succeeded at the box office as a "more brawn, less brain" popcorn flick. Its story was continued by two TV movies that did not include the original cast and characters. Seven years later, Universal Soldier: The Return marked Van Damme's homecoming to the franchise, following which 2009's Universal Soldier: Regeneration reunited the first film's leads, Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren.
In 2012, the franchise hit the big screen again with a new installment, Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, that added Scott Adkins to the mix alongside Van Damme and Lundgren. However, Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning was the last of the movie...

In what can be called movie geek comfort food, Battle: Los Angeles and Krull have become cult favorites over the years. Why? You can watch either movie while doing other things keeping an extra eye on the screen, have devout fans who can recite the dialogue verbatim and will defend both movies to the end. Guilty pleasures, yes, cult status, definitely.
Even HBO Max has it listed as such.

April is about to be a good month for returning HBO and HBO Max properties.
HBO Max’s list of releases for April 2022 features three hotly anticipated seasons of television. The Flight Attendant, which helped launch HBO Max as a viable spot for good dramedy in 2020, premieres its second season on April 21. That will be followed by another go-around for the sci-fi comedy Made for Love on April 28. Of course, the big ticket item this month is something that HBO Max inherited from its cable cousin. Barry season 3 will continue the story of hitman-turned-actor Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) on April 24.
The TV offerings run much deeper than just returning shows this month. April 7 sees the arrival of Tokyo Vice, a sprawling crime drama with some episodes directed by Michael Mann. The series stars Ansel Elgort as an American journalist embedding himself in Tokyo’s criminal underground in the late ’90s.

The new year is continuing apace at Hulu. The streamer’s list of new releases for February 2022 is highlighted by one very interesting project.
Pam and Tommy is set to premiere on Feb. 2. Perhaps the Groundhog Day release date is intentional as the show will cover a particular moment of celebrity, sex, and exploitation from the early ’90s that seems to have repeated itself over and over. Sebastian Stan and Lily James star as Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson and the series follows the events and fallout of their homemade sex tape being stolen and unleashed on a nascent internet. If nothing else, getting the promo photos of Stan and James as the ’90s stars was worth it.

The 1992 action film that starred Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren is the latest film franchise to get the big Hollywood reboot. The movie is currently being written by Richard Wenk, the screenwriter of The Equalizer. He announced the news himself during an interview with Discussing Film saying:
“I will say that I’m just finishing up a re-imagining — let’s be clear about this it’s not a remake and it is not a redo — but it is a re-imagining of a movie called ‘Universal Soldier’…very much like ‘The Equalizer,’ it’s the title that inspired me and not the movies…I’m just about to finish (the script) and turn it in this week.”
I like how he has to make a point to say that his project is a “re-imagining”. But, we all know that regardless of what he wants us to call it, the movie...

In the wake of the Alien 5 news, here are 10 franchise sequels that also ignored at least one previous film.
We all have moments in our lives we'd prefer to forget, and so too do filmmakers. So what do you do when a movie franchise starts to go off the rails? Simple, just forget that the lesser films in the series never happened.
News recently broke that director Neill Blomkamp's taking this approach to the Alien universe. Recent interviews with both he and returning star Sigourney Weaver have revealed that Blomkamp's forthcoming sequel will not necessarily follow the events of Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection, and pick up the story from Aliens instead (although he has since given a brief update on that).

Shocking as it may seem given the amount of horror flicks I review here on Nerdly, I’m not just a horror fan. My movie-loving passion is in fact split between three genres: horror, teen comedies and action movies. As much as I can appreciate low-budget horror flicks I can also appreciate low-budget action movies – which, at least from major studios, are few and far between these days. Which is one of the reasons I was excited to check out Sniper: Legacy.
The other reason? Well, as a teenager I used to love Impact Magazine. It really was my film bible, I’d religiously pick up each and every issue from the newsagents near where I used to catch the bus to college; in...

SummerSlam! The biggest party of the summer, and the WWE’s second biggest pay per view event after Wrestlemania. The show which has been running annually since 1988 has always been a highlight for any wrestling fans calendar. That’s not to say that every match has been a classic. In fact, some have been downright stinkers. But hell, would we be able to truly appreciate the all time classic matches like The British Bulldog’s win against Bret Hit Man Hart from SummerSlam 1992 or Edge vs. The Undertaker from 2008 had we not been treated to matches with the likes of Giant Gonzales in? The bad allows us to appreciate the good, and put perspective on it.
So here are the top five worst matches in SummerSlam history. Not an easy list to compile, and whilst it was very hard to include the classic Marty Janetty vs. Ludvig Borga match on...

This is one "no bull" piece of sci-fi / action / semi-horror, but first... a history lesson of sorts:
Universal Soldier (1992)
Universal Soldier: The Return (1999)
Universal Soldier: Regeneration (2009)
Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning (2012)
These are generally considered the "canonical" Universal Soldier films, which means that Universal Soldier 2: Brothers in Arms (1998) and Universal Soldier 3: Unfinished Business (1999) are either "unofficial" movies or perhaps a second sequel thread that you can choose to follow if you love Universal Soldier so dang much. The connective tissue of the "true" Universal Soldier movies is the presence of Jean-Claude Van Damme (who has appeared in all four) and Dolph Lundgren, who skipped only Part 2. The stagnant franchise was re-ignited a few years back with Regeneration, which was considerably more fun than what you'd normally expect from a decade-late Part 3 spawned from a Part 2 that practically nobody saw -- and now the same team is...

A few weeks ago, Hurricane Sandy was on its way, and I more or less knew that my home in suburban Connecticut would be without power for days on end. Of course, no power meant no movies. So, in addition to collecting bottled water and making sure all of the flashlights had batteries, I downloaded a film from iTunes to watch on my Macbook Air. That movie was "Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning."Much to my surprise, it ended up being a hugely entertaining beacon of light and one of the very best action movies of the year. But… what? Why? How? Read on for an explanation as to why "Day Of Reckoning" is so unthinkably great. It Doesn't Matter If You Haven't Seen Another "Universal Soldier" Movie The original "Universal Soldier" was released back in 1992. Like "Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning," it features memorable performances by expendables Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren.

Although the phrase "direct-to-dvd" still seems to imply a distinct lack of quality and production values, movies released on VOD do not seem to have the same stigma attached to them. The latest Universal Soldier sequel, Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, is essentially a direct-to-dvd production, but with Magnet Releasing putting it out on VOD first followed by a limited theatrical run, they are helping to make the film seem a little more legit. Truth be told, the road back to respectability for the Universal Soldier franchise started with the last film, Universal Soldier: Regeneration, and with director John Hyams back in the director's chair, it seems a safe bet that this movie may also be better than expected. Universal Soldier: Regeneration was a reboot of sorts for the series, choosing to ignore Universal Soldier: The Return and the two made-for-tv movies that came out in the late '90s.

The Universal Soldier series has had a strange history since the release the immensely fun Jean-Claude Van Damme/ Dolph Lundgren starring action vehicle way back in 1992. It took 6 years for the story of a secret government reanimating dead soldiers for use as the ultimate weapon to get a sequel, in the form of two direct to video movies (intended as the jumping off point for a planned T.V. show), Brothers In Arms and Unfinished Business, bringing in an entirely new cast, and, unsurprisingly, not being very good. Then another sequel appeared in 1999, Universal Soldier: The Return, bringing back Van Damme and completely ignoring the previous sequels. Again, it wasn't very good. That seemed to be the nail in the coffin for the franchise, but 10 years later, out came Universal Soldier: Regeneration. An intense, low budget paring back of the concept, it reunited Van Damme and Lundgren, reprising their roles from the original,...

The show was announced at the Mipcom conference in Cannes by FremantleMedia North America who have tasked Stargate Sg-1 and Sanctuary scribe Damian Kindler with bringing it to the small screen; and Allen Shapiro and Craig Baumgarten, who produced the original movie, are signed on as executive producers.

While director John Hyams is currently filming Universal Soldier: A New Dimension, a follow-up to his surprisingly great Universal Soldier: Regeneration, with Jcvd, Dolph Lundgren, and Scott Adkins, one long-standing rumor which still hasn’t been denied or confirmed is that Michael Jai White will co-star in A New Dimension (here). Scott Adkins posted a new pic on his Twitter (via Twitch) that shows himself, Larnell Stovall who choreographed the fighting in Undisputed III and Never Back Down 2, and Micheal Jai White.
Does this mean White will get his revenge on Jcvd who killed his character in Universal Soldier: The Return back in 1999? Or was he just visiting the set?...

Early rumors has Michael Jai White (Mortal kombat: Legacy) coming back to the franchise as his character of S.E.T.H. from 1999′s Universal Soldier: The Return as well as the film being in 3D, but nothing further has come of these rumor – yet. The film is gearing up for pre-production in Louisiana, so expect more soon.

Says the star of Undisputed 2, Undisputed 3 and Ninja via his Twitter account:Getting on a plane to go and make Universal Soldier 4 with Dolph & Jc.There have been rumblings that Universal Soldier: A New Dimension may be in the works for a while now, with writer-director John Hyams expressing a desire to continue the franchise. Early reports even suggest that Michael Jai White may return from Universal Soldier 2. But this is the first solid confirmation that it's actually happening. And not only is it happening, it's happening right now with both Jean Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren - who was killed quite convincingly last time out - returning. As for the addition of Adkins, the man is one of the truly...

This week's Archer was one of an ass-kicking, glorious nature. Don't you agree? Our staff does, and put together a Round Table Q&A discussion of "Pipeline Fever" to discuss it.
Without further delay, we present this week's Archer Round Table:
What was your favorite Archer quote from last night?
Dr. Toboggan: Lana: "He's attacked nuclear power plants, hydroelectric dams, and whaling ships." Archer: "Whaling ships? What he's got something against clean burning lamp oil?"
Mark F: Stewardess: "Sir, can you find your seat for me?" Archer: "Uh, yeah. It's right over there. Can you go find some more Hurricanes for me?"
Eric H: Archer: She gets dinner in Dixieland and laid. And I get mosquitoes and no beer and not laid. How could this get any... [alligator murmurs] Let Me Finish... worse. You ruined it. You ruined the moment.
In honor of Archer's man crush, err spirit guide - your favorite Burt Reynolds movie?...

Michael Jai White is joining Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren in Universal Soldier: A New Dimension, the fourth Universal Soldier film. Universal Soldier: A New Dimension follows the events from Universal Soldier: Regeneration. Michael Jai White was in the first Universal Solider film very briefly at its beginning and in Universal Soldier: The Return. John Hyams, whom directed Universal Soldier: Regeneration, is returning to direct Universal Soldier: A New Dimension.
Foresight Unlimited is reporting an extreme abundance of pre-sales for Universal Soldier: A New Dimension, no doubt do to the quality, action-packed nature, and reception of Universal Soldier: Regeneration.

Ka-pow, sucka! Screen Daily is reporting that Black Dynamite himself, Michael Jai White is joining Universal Soldier: A New Dimension for director John Hyams. Hyams also directed the really, really good Universal Solider: Regeneration. Jcvd vs. White vs. Lundgren? Hell yeah!
Keen Universal Soldier fans will remember White was in the third film, with Jcvd and Bill Goldberg, Universal Soldier: The Return in 1999. It was once rumored to be a 3D movie (here), probably hence the subtitle A New Dimension. There’s no other word for this bit of news than: stoked!

News reaches us, via Screen Daily, that director John Hyams is to follow-up his last Universal Soldier flick, Regeneration, with a fourth official entry in the franchise, entitled Universal Soldier: A New Dimension, which will reportedly be shot in 3D (hence the “new dimension” tag).
The fourth film in the series sees stars Dolph Lundgren, Jean-Claude Van Damme returning alongside Michael Jai White, who previously starred with Van Damme in Universal Soldier: The Return.
Foresight Unlimited have already sold the rights (at the Efm) to Universal Soldier: A New Dimension in numerous territories including: the UK (Optimum), Germany (Telepool), Australia (Transmission), Japan (Nikkatsu), Taiwan (Ssg), South Korea (Joy n Contents Group), Russia (Daro), Scandinavia (Mis.Label), English-speaking Canada (eOne) and Benelux (Les Filmes D’Elysee), Latin America (California), the Middle East (Shooting Stars), Thailand (Ipa), Turkey (Mars), South Africa (Nu Metro), Eastern Europe (Spi), China (Hgc), India (Superfine), Indonesia (Pt...

With work on the Expendables sequel already well under way, fans are soon to be hearing some casting news. While this past week has seen Bruce Willis confirmed, and Jean-Claude Van Damme rumored to be joining, it's got me thinking: what other actors would we like to see? The first film prided itself on bringing together a large group of action movie stars both old and new, but there are still plenty of older action stars left. Here's our list of the ones we want to see in Expendables 2.
Dwayne Johnson
You had Stone Cold Steve Austin in the first film, so why not throw The Rock in the sequel? Honestly though, I'm really surprised Johnson wasn't in the first film. Of all of the wrestlers turned actors, Johnson has actually shown talent for it, and produced some fun and entertaining performances. Now that he's done for the moment doing family movies,...

After a day of passionate political debate with his Twitter followers, Sylvester Stallone is back talking about our preferred subject: the sequel to The Expendables. “Good day to say that the new story line for next Expendables is taking shape — many twists that i’ve yet to figure out yet — Jcvd possibility!” he tweeted early this morning. Really, what better way for Jean-Claude Van Damme to prove his ticker is fine than by joining this muscle parade. Stallone appears hopeful: “How bout Jcvd being the baddest of the bad? Painful and fun choice for the one who gets to do battle with him.

If the release of Universal Soldier: Regeneration earlier this year wasn't unlikely enough, can you believe that there is already another Universal Soldier sequel in development? Regeneration must have done quite well on DVD and Blu-ray, because Foresight Unlimited has announced this week that Universal Soldier IV is happening, and that both Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren will return. Although technically this is now the sixth Universal Soldier movie, it is the fourth in the series according to "official" canon. John Hyams will also return to direct. The somewhat unexpected part of this story is that they are claiming that the new movie will be shot in 3-D. Considering that Universal Soldier: Regeneration was a direct-to-dvd release, does this mean that they are aiming for a theatrical release this time around? It seems pretty unlikely, especially since so many people will be out of the loop story-wise. On the other hand,...

John Hyams, who directed Universal Soldier Regeneration (2009) is being wheeled back to helm the latest tale of semi-cyborg mayhem.

There are a lot of little news bites floating around on this Wednesday:
The Hollywood Reporter posts that Kurt Russell with star in a new supernatural thriller called Undying. A "neo-noir creeper," the film was written by Gary Whitta (Book of Eli) and focuses on a Pi who gets sucked into the world of the supernatural when hired by a woman named Delia. Is it too much to hope for a little Plisskenesque camp in this baby? Production will kick off this fall.

Could this actually reach the big screen, or are these guys just banking on 3D TV?...

Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren back for Universal Soldier IV It seems that Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren will be going back to the future once again, and this time in 3D. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Van Damme and Lundgren have been set to reprise their roles in Universal Soldier IV.
The actors previously worked on the last film in the franchise, Universal Soldier: Regeneration, and now it seems that Foresight International is angling for bidders at Cannes this week. It was said they were aiming for an October production start for the film, with Universal Soldier: Regeneration director Peter Hyams back at the helm.
Foresight is also selling Recoil from writer-director Mark Steven Johnson (Daredevil, Ghost Rider). The film will be budgeted at $35 million and centers on a former FBI sniper who comes back into action after his ex-wife becomes the target of another maniacal sniper.

Prepare yourselves for Jean Claude Van Damme in 3D! Yes, 3D. Reporting from Cannes, Deadline says that Van Damme and his regular sparring partner Dolph Lundgren will be starring in "Universal Soldier IV."
Never mind that I didn't know there was and "Universal Solider III" -- apparently it came out last year -- 3D? Yup. John Hyams who directed the last "Universal Soldier" film will be back behind the camera, this time embracing 3D.
This leaves us with a few questions: how exactly do straight-to-video films in 3D work?
Thoughts?

Foresight Unlimited is moving forward with "Universal Soldier IV" and "Recoil" for shoots in the fall. "Universal Soldier IV" will reunite Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren, stars of the original film and the third installment "Universal Soldier: Regeneration." Film is being helmed by John Hyams and set for 3D with filming begining in October. Mark Steven Johnson ("Ghost Rider" and "Daredevil") will direct the $35 million-budgeted "Recoil" which stars filming in November. That film follows a former FBI sniper who is pulled back into action when his ex-wife is targeted by a deranged sniper. The latter film sounds far more intriguing than another "Universal Soldier" spawn, 3D or not.
