“Maria” is ready to sing.
On Thursday, Netflix released the first trailer for Pablo Larrain’s “Maria” starring Oscar winner Angelina Jolie as the legendary opera singer Maria Callas. A regular on the film festival circuit since its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in August, “Maria” will enjoy a limited theatrical release in late November before hitting Netflix on December 11.
The third film in Larrain’s unofficial trilogy on prominent women of the 20th century following “Jackie” (about Jacqueline Kennedy) and “Spencer” (about Princess Diana), “Maria” follows “the American-Greek soprano as she retreats to Paris after a glamorous and tumultuous life in the public eye.” The film, which unfolds over Callas’ final days, “reimagines the legendary soprano in her final days as the diva reckons with her identity and life.” Callas died in 1977 at the age of 53.

“Tell me how it felt to be onstage,” the journalist played by Kodi Smit-McPhee says to Maria Callas in the new trailer for Maria. “An exultation,” she responds. “An intoxication. I thought the stage itself would burn.” Starring Academy Award-winning actor Angelina Jolie, Pablo Larraín’s Maria is a swooning portrait of that cocktail of emotion.
Jolie earned an Academy Award for her performance in Girl, Interrupted, and has displayed her incredible range in films like Changeling, The Good Shepherd, Maleficent, and Those Who Wish Me Dead.
Renowned Chilean filmmaker Larraín is known for such films as Jackie, Spencer, No, Neruda, and 2023’s El Conde, which garnered a Best Cinematography Oscar nomination for Edward Lachman’s chiaroscuro work.

“Maria” serves as the third entry in the unofficial trilogy from director Pablo Larraín about iconic 20th-century women during a specific period when they receded from public view. 2016’s “Jackie” examined the role Jackie Kennedy played in the aftermath of her husband’s assassination, and “Spencer” took a measured approach to the life of Diana Spencer before her official divorce from the future King Charles of England. To say that “Maria” is the least all-encompassing of this trilogy is not an insult, but rather a calculated choice on Larraín’s part. This isn’t the story about how the consciousness of a nation was thrust on the shoulders of a young woman, but rather a deconstruction of the artifice of celebrity.

In our Oscar odds, Mikey Madison (“Anora”) and Karla Sofia Gascon (“Emilia Perez”) have emerged as the front-runners for Best Actress. But the first of those films is a comedy and the latter is a musical. Since comedies and musicals are separated from dramas at the Golden Globes, that opens up a golden opportunity for a dramatic actress to assert herself this awards season. As of this writing, it looks like that actress will be Angelina Jolie (“Maria”).
Jolie is the front-runner for Best Film Drama Actress for her biographical performance as opera singer Maria Callas. The film is directed by Pablo Larrain, who guided Natalie Portman and Kristen Stewart to Best Actress Oscar nominations for the respective biopics “Jackie” and “Spencer.” Currently, Jolie leads our Globe forecasts with 37/10 odds. Remember When Angelina Jolie Declared She’d Never Marry Again Following Her Heartbreaking Split? (Photo Credit – Facebook)
Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie dropped a bombshell about love when she declared she would never get married again. Talking about her past with Brad Pitt, she alluded that she felt “pressured” into their marriage.
After a long romance, the couple tied the knot in France. But just two years later, they decided to part ways. Jolie, who has six children with Brad Pitt—Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and twins Knox and Vivienne—has focused on herself and her career. Meanwhile, their custody agreement reached last November still looms over the legal landscape, but as of yet, both stars are legally single.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for “Joker: Folie à Deux” now playing in theaters.

At the most recent Oscars, Emma Stone became the lucky 13th winner of two Best Actress awards when she picked up the prize for “Poor Things”; she had prevailed seven years earlier for “La La Land.” Stone is back in the race this year with “Kinds of Kindness,” which reunites her with “Poor Things” director Yorgos Lanthimos. However that trippy trilogy is unlikely to bring them back to the Oscars. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Actress.)

Does “Anora” or “Emilia Pérez” have the edge in the Golden Globes’ comedy/musical categories? Will Nicole Kidman win her seventh Globe? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here with their first Golden Globe film predictions.
“Anora” and “Emilia Pérez” are not only top two in the Best Picture Oscar odds but are top two in the Best Comedy/Musical Film Golden Globe odds as well. The former definitely puts the “comedy” in the category title, while the latter for sure puts the “musical” in it. Which has the edge? Similarly, the past two Best Actress Oscar races have featured a frontrunner in drama and one in comedy/musical. Not the case this year, at least at the moment, since “Anora” star Mikey Madison and “Emilia Pérez’s” Karla Sofía Gascón will vie for the same Globe — and the winner could very well establish herself as the Oscar favorite.

A quarter century after winning the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “Girl, Interrupted,” Angelina Jolie is hoping to pick up the Best Actress trophy for her performance in “Maria.” In terms of Oscar history, she’d join Meryl Streep, Jessica Lange, Cate Blanchett, and Renée Zellweger, who all won for featured performances before prevailing again for star turns.
Jolie’s role, that of real-life opera singer Maria Callas, has already been proven to be awards-worthy and won Jane Seymour an Emmy nearly four decades ago. This English rose featured in the 1988 TV movie “Onassis: The Richest Man in the World,” opposite Raul Julia as Aristotle Onassis and Anthony Quinn as his father, Socrates. This remains her only Emmy win from five nominations.
Zellweger won Best Actress for her sensitive portrayal of Judy Garland in the 2020 flick “Judy.” Back in 2001, Tammy Blanchard and Judy Davis took home Emmys for their work...

The 2024 Toronto International Film Festival was a success on many fronts, launching many titles into the marketplace looking for buyers, and others into the fall season, including the usual spate of Oscar contenders. But the festival continues to contract, with empty seats in the largest houses.
Many sales titles weren’t scooped up quickly. According to buyers, many were demanding too much money, which should eventually shake out. David Gordon Green’s opening night family movie “Nutcrackers,” starring Ben Stiller, found a home at Hulu, and Paramount just picked up Munich Olympic Games thriller “September 5” for November release, promising an Oscar campaign.
Surprisingly, “The Life of Chuck,” without a distributor, won the People’s Choice Award that usually leads to a Best Picture Oscar nomination and occasionally an actual win. The likelihood that the film will instantly become an Oscar contender the way “American Fiction” did last year remains slim.

Of the five films Angelina Jolie has directed, four have depicted war. But her latest, “Without Blood,” delves most directly into the haunting aftermath of the carnage.
“I think conflict tends to bring out absolutely the worst in our behavior toward each other and often the best, when those who fight against or rise above,” Jolie said during an interview at the Variety Toronto Film Festival Studio. “As artists, a lot of our work is this study of what it is to be human. So these extremes of the human condition are what we’re trying to understand sometimes and are drawn to. Certainly I’m somebody who, as I’ve traveled and done other [humanitarian] work in the field, I’ve always questioned why and how.”

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is bringing some beloved characters back to fans, but the sequel is also introducing a few fresh faces — relatively speaking, considering they might be dead.
Once again directed by Tim Burton, the sequel takes place 30 years after the original, bringing the Deetz family back together for Charles’ death. At this point, Lydia (Winona Ryder) is fully grown with a daughter of her own, who discovers the mysterious remnants of Beetlejuice left in the attic.
We won’t spoil anything here, but we will give you a rundown of who’s who in the “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” cast and the characters they’re playing, old and new.
Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) Warner Bros.
The juice is loose yet again, and he’s played by Michael Keaton once more. Keaton is, of course, perhaps best known as Beetlejuice and Batman, but you’ll also from “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” “Spotlight” and “Birdman.”

Angelina Jolie and Pablo Larraín had been wanting to work together for a long time when “Maria” came up. The filmmaker got his star interested in the role before he wrote the script (with her firmly in mind). The film, the third in his Great Woman trilogy debuted to solid reviews in Venice (where Netflix picked it up) and Telluride and could return the Oscar-winning Jolie to the Best Actress race.

On Sunday, less than 24 hours after the Telluride Film Festival’s North American premiere of Maria, a drama about the rollercoaster life of the legendary opera singer Maria Callas, The Hollywood Reporter sat down with its star, Angelina Jolie, and director, Pablo Larraín, for a wide-ranging conversation.
Jolie said of playing Callas, in a performance for which she is generating white-hot best actress Oscar buzz, “It certainly was the hardest thing I’ve ever done.” Why? On the most literal level, the Girl, Interrupted Oscar winner had to learn how to sing opera and then do so in front of others live and on camera (her voice was ultimately blended with Callas’s in the final product). But beyond that, she clearly feels a personal bond with “La Divina,” who died in 1977, the age of 53, when Jolie was just two.
Both, Jolie acknowledged, could be described as world-famous performers — “icons,...

As I sat through the North American premiere of Pablo Larraín’s biopic of Maria Callas at the Telluride Film Festival, which stars Angelina Jolie as the famed opera singer, I couldn’t help but recall a line from Al Pacino in “The Godfather Part III” (1990): “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!”
It’s been an awfully long time since Jolie was contending for a statuette — her last acting nomination was for 2008’s “Changeling” and she’s spent the time since then starring in popcorn movies like “Salt” and “Maleficent” or directing films like “Unbroken.” But if you needed a reminder of what a formidable acting talent Jolie is, it’s on display in her transformative portrayal of one of the most renowned and influential opera singers of the 20th century. It’s a chameleonic turn that can best be described as a a kind of cinematic possession.

According to the current combined predictions of Gold Derby users, Angelina Jolie (“Maria”) is in fourth place for Best Actress with 17/2 odds at this year’s Oscars. The movie itself just debuted at the Venice Film Festival, earning an eight-minute standing ovation. That could be a sign of how strong a force she’ll be in the upcoming awards season. If she goes all the way, it would be similar to the Oscars path of another recent Best Actress winner.
In 2019 Renée Zellweger starred as actress and singer Judy Garland in Rupert Goold‘s biographical film “Judy,” which took place during the final year of the showbiz legend’s life in London, shortly before her death in 1969. Angelina Jolie tends to wear more modest clothing these days. The 49-year-old often dons gorgeous gowns draped in luxurious materials, as evidenced by several of her media appearances in 2024. However, the A-list actor occasionally bares her shoulders and back, showing off the extensive tattoos she’s added over the years.

“Angelina! Angelina! Angelina!”
The Venice Film Festival loves its movie stars, and Angelina Jolie was the toast of Italy on Thursday night. The actress wept during an eight-minute standing ovation at the Sala Grande Theatre at the world premiere of “Maria,” Pablo Larraín’s biographical drama about the Greek opera singer Maria Callas.
The outpouring of love and emotion brings to mind another standing ovation in Venice that launched the Oscar campaign for Brendan Fraser in “The Whale,” as he sobbed through the applause that cemented a career comeback in 2022.
Jolie was similarly taken by the rapturous response, wiping away tears and at time turning her face away from the cheering as she was overcome by emotion. She hugged Larraín and the cast of the film, which is sure to be an Oscar contender, putting Jolie in the best actress race for the first time in 15 years.
Netflix will release “Maria” later this year.

Angelina Jolie has staked her claim to be part of the Best Actress Oscar conversation here at the Venice Film Festival following her well-received performance in Maria.
Pablo Larraín’s biopic follows the life story of the world’s greatest opera singer, Maria Callas, during her final days in 1970s Paris.
Jolie in a press conference today said she spent seven months preparing for the role: “Everybody here knows, I was terribly nervous,” she said of learning to sing opera. “I spent almost seven months training because when you work with Pablo you can’t do anything by half. He demands, in the most wonderful way, that you really do the work and you really learn and train.”
Critics have perhaps been more enthusiastic about Jolie’s performance than the film itself, which could prove challenging for the actress’s Academy prospects, but Netflix picked the film up this week...

Spoiler Alert !!!Spoilers ahead for Changeling.
While her life off-screen has always been fodder for news stories, Angelina Jolie has always been a talented actress who could take on intense roles and deliver strong performances. The actress won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Girl, Interrupted, and was nominated multiple times for the Golden Globes.
One role that gave her both a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination was Clint Eastwood’s period drama, Changeling. However, Jolie was reportedly not too keen on playing the role as it dealt with a mother losing her child. Even after being convinced by Eastwood, she allegedly had a tough time coming home to her kids after the role.

With Wolverine reappearing in cinemas, Logan director James Mangold takes a timely swipe at multiverses.
In what seems like a timely moment, director James Mangold has offered a criticism on the narrative mechanics of modern superhero films. Just as Deadpool & Wolverine hits cinemas, resurrecting a character that Mangold created a pitch-perfect ending for in 2017’s Logan, the filmmaker has criticised the use of shared universes and multiverses, dubbing them as ‘the death of storytelling.’
Speaking to Rolling Stone magazine (via The Hollywood Reporter) ahead of the launch of his latest film, the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, Mangold had this to say about the tendency of superhero films to revive past characters or use connective Easter eggs via multiverse or shared universe narratives: “It’s the enemy of storytelling. The death of storytelling. It’s more interesting to people the way the LEGOs connect than the way the story works in front of us.

If there was a decade that truly helped to shape the future of the crime thriller genre, it was undoubtedly the 1990s. The era churned out numerous movies that have become the benchmark for how to craft a movie about the hunt for a serial killer, or flashing femme fatales with a penchant for murder. Sarah Paulson won her first Tony for Best Actress in a Play, for Branden Jacobs-Jenkens’s dysfunctional family drama “Appropriate.” Paulson is a seven-time Emmy nominee and one-time winner for “The People vs.
