10 Most Underrated Stephen King TV Shows And Miniseries
Image
One of the most prolific and best-selling authors in American history is Stephen King, who's written countless beloved books across a career spanning 50 years. Primarily known for his work in the horror genre, King has expanded his thematic reach to include crime, fantasy, and science fiction, sometimes under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. Many of King's works have been adapted into film and television, with adaptations in the latter in both the ongoing and limited series format. And like any other author, especially one with King's prodigious output, some adaptations are going to go under-appreciated and overlooked.

Simply put, there are a multitude of Stephen King television adaptations, with many not getting their just due during their initial release. Whether overshadowed by more prominent adaptations or relegated to more audience-neglected platforms, even King's name doesn't guarantee a show's success. Fortunately, many of these series' reputations have improved over time, with subsequent...

Insomnia can be difficult to endure in itself, but what happens when you can't sleep in the far reaches of deep space and your only companion is a computer and your unraveling psyche? That intriguing (and horrifying) question is explored in stunning visual style within the pages of Station Grand, a new sci-fi graphic novella written by Craig Hurd-McKenney, illustrated by Noah Bailey, and lettered by Saida Temofonte.

With Station Grand now available via Oni Press and Simon & Schuster, Daily Dead had the great pleasure of catching up with Craig and Noah in a new Q&a feature to discuss their intriguing collaboration!

Thank you for taking the time to answer questions for us, Craig and Noah, and congratulations on Station Grand! How and when did you initially come up with the idea for this story?

A Horror Cult-Classic From H.P. Lovecraft Is Being "Re-Animated"
Image
One of H.P. Lovecraft's classic tales of horror is coming back to the big screen. Deadline reports that Adam Simon and Tim Metcalfe are penning a modernized remake of Herbert West: Reanimator. The story was previously adapted for the screen in 1985 as Re-Animator.

Although his works are famously difficult to adapt, Lovecraft has been a source of inspiration for a number of successful horror films over the years, including Color Out of Space, Banshee Chapter, and Suitable Flesh. Simon and Metcalfe are no strangers to the horror genre; together, the two wrote the Snoop Dogg blaxploitation homage Bones and the supernatural hit The Haunting in Connecticut. Simon directed the fright flicks Brain Dead and Carnosaur, while Metcalfe penned the horror sequel Fright Night Part 2 and the Brad Pitt-David Duchovny serial killer thriller Kalifornia. The film will be produced by Woodlake Entertainment, and is planned as the...

Modern Remake of 'Herbert West: Reanimator' Officially in the Works
Image
One of H.P. Lovecraft's most important stories is being adapted for the big screen. Again. A new adaptation of Herbert West: Reanimator, the 1922 short story that inspired the 1985 horror comedy Re-Animator, is in the works. The film will give modern audiences a new chance to witness the sick mind of West, the scientist who develops a serum that can bring corpses back to life. Herbert West: Reanimator was one of the first literary works to include "zombies" as reanimated corpses with uncontrollable urges.

As reported by Deadline, screenwriters Adam Simon and Tim Metcalfe, of The Haunting in Connecticut fame, will write the script for the new project. They'll reunite with executive producer Andrew Trapani, who worked with them on The Haunting in Connecticut and also produced the horror film Winchester. A director is yet to be announced for the film.

Woodlake Entertainment is on board as the production studio behind the project.

Stuart Gordon at an event for Edmond (2005)
Herbert West: Reanimator is getting a contemporary reimagining from The Haunting in Connecticut writers
Stuart Gordon at an event for Edmond (2005)
Back in 1985, director Stuart Gordon and his collaborators drew inspiration from author H.P. Lovecraft’s 1922 serial novelette Herbert West–Reanimator for a movie that ranks as one of the greatest horror films ever made, Re-Animator. That film was followed by the sequels Bride of Re-Animator and Beyond Re-Animator – and then, even though there were plans and ideas for further sequels, the franchise, unfortunately, sputtered out. Herbert West–Reanimator has gotten other adaptations here and there over the years and now, Deadline reports that The Haunting in Connecticut screenwriters Adam Simon and Tim Metcalfe are working on Herbert West: Reanimator, a contemporary reimagining of the story.

Lovecraft’s story plays out in six sections, titled From the Dark, The Plague-Daemon, Six Shots by Midnight, The Scream of the Dead, The Horror from the Shadows, and The Tomb-Legions. It centers on Herbert West, a brilliant but mercurial physician whose rabid obsession and...

New Adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s ‘Herbert West: Reanimator’ in the Works
Image
A new, contemporary adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s short story Herbert West: Reanimator is in the works from The Haunting in Connecticut screenwriters Adam Simon and Tim Metcalfe, Deadline reports tonight.

The new adaptation is said to be the first in a series of “elevated genre pics” developed and financed by Woodlake Entertainment.

Herbert West: Reanimator centers on “the brilliant but mercurial physician West, whose rabid obsession and pursuit of life extension succeeds to a horrifying effect.”

The news arrives as the short story’s first feature adaptation, Stuart Gordon’s Re-Animator, turns 40 this year. This loose retelling of H.P. Lovecraft’s Herbert West-Reanimator goes for the jugular in terms of gore and laughs thanks to director Stuart Gordon, producer Brian Yuzna, and actor Jeffrey Combs as Herbert West.

Lovecraft’s short story, first serialized in Home Brew magazine in 1922, is the first among his works to mention the fictional Miskatonic University.

Multi-Emmy-nominated artist and producer Jeffrey Lewis and Keith Previte will produce for Woodlake, with the Lovecraft adaptation the first in series of elevated genre pics the company plans to develop and finance.

The 15 Worst Movie Sequels Ever
Image
If you think sequels are bad now, you should have seen them a couple decades ago. Today, franchises are so ubiquitous that the studios take time to get them as right as possible, securing the original stars and trying to write stories that equal their predecessors. At the dawn of the blockbuster era, however, sequels were seen as cheap cash cows to be rushed out as quickly as possible while people still remembered the original. Nowadays, we know that nostalgia can overcome most of that and keep some properties around forever.

If you're wondering why your least favorite "Star Wars, "Star Trek," or "Superman" isn't on this list, it's simple: when you have an actor associated with an iconic character who continues to commit to the role, it elevates even "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace." It's hard to hate a movie that has Christopher Reeve in the tights, or Leonard Nimoy in pointy ears,...

RoboCop (2014) – What Happened to This Sci-Fi Action Remake?
Image
In 1987, director Paul Verhoeven created the perfect movie. An R-rated, hilarious and action-packed film with something to say about the world around it. Hell, it even sold toys. You’d never have guessed the inevitable franchise would spawn only two follow up films before being put to rest by 1993’s disastrous RoboCop 3. Fast forward to 2014 and a time when Hollywood’s prime directive is to remake and reboot nostalgic IP. Often to the considerable dismay of at least some of their respective fan groups. To their credit however, Sony Pictures hired a visionary and fearless director perfect for upsetting the status quo. Much like Verhoeven had done more than thirty years earlier. They hired an all-star cast and spared no expense recreating the world of RoboCop. But studios are going to studio. They followed up these great choices by failing to learn from any of the lessons Robocop 3 provided.

Larry Tamblyn Dead at 82: 4 Unknown Facts About The Standells’ Founding Member
Image
The music world just lost another great. Larry Tamblyn, who helped start the legendary garage-rock band The Standells, passed away on Friday, March 21, at 82. He was the man behind the keyboard and sometimes stepped up to the mic as lead singer, a true standout in the 1960s rock scene.

The Standells might not ring a bell for younger folks today, but their impact is huge. Back in the day, people called them the “punk band of the 1960s,” and people can hear their influence in bands like the S*x Pistols and Ramones. Their anthem, Dirty Water, still gets the crowd going at Boston Red Sox and Bruins home games.

A Cancelled Marvel Movie Could Have Starred Robert Downey Jr. Before Iron Man
Image
It's easy to forget that Jon Favreau's "Iron Man" was considered something of a risk when it was released in 2008. Marvel hadn't yet been purchased by Disney at that point, while the onslaught of the eventual Marvel Cinematic Universe was but a glint in Favreau's eye. When he included a cameo appearance from Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, delivering lines about the Avengers Initiative, Favreau meant for it to serve as nothing more than a wink to fans. It wasn't until the following year that Disney purchased Marvel and put plans for the Avengers into proper motion.

Robert Downey Jr. starred as Tony Stark/Iron Man, and the film proved to be a boon for his career. The actor has spoken very openly about how the years 1996 to 2001 were a time of intense substance abuse for him, culminating in him finally going to rehab in November 2001 after eating...

Why Steven Spielberg and Stephen King’s Planned ‘90s Horror Collaboration Never Happened
Image
Stephen King loves to watch. Over the years, he hasn’t shied away from giving reviews about the latest projects. But he isn’t just a fan. Apart from writing numerous best-selling novels, the popular author has served as a screenwriter on several movies and TV shows. On television, he has penned scripts for productions like The Stand and Storm of the Century. He also wrote an episode of The X-Files. On the big screen, his screenwriting work stretches as far back as the early ‘80s when he made his debut with George A. Romero's Creepshow.

Apart from writing, King has had an interest in producing his movies and shows, though he has a hit-and-miss trend in this space. After the failure of Maximum Overdrive in the ‘80s, many expected him to stick to what he knows best, but he has persisted. King’s love for cinema has been...

'It Follows': Over 10 Years Later, Horror Indie Is Still an Anti-Slasher Masterpiece
Image
In 2014, It Follows gained notoriety among horror fans and critics for its suspense and impressive visuals. Over a decade later, It Follows has retained the praise and admiration of an audience that can be divisive and finicky about the offerings they’re presented with. Director David Robert Mitchell tapped into the vein of many standard slasher and horror tropes and, in many ways, went completely against them in a film that thrives on suspense, atmosphere, remarkable cinematography, and a commentary on sexual promiscuity that hadn't been seen since Shivers by David Cronenberg.

It Follows can almost be seen as the definitive anti-slasher film of the modern era. Sacrificing visceral effects and sensationalized death in favor of connecting the audience to the characters through dissonance and reinforcing the more subtle horror of what one doesn’t see. The slasher genre, which was rather basic and took delight in punishing teenagers for promiscuity and drug use,...

15 Books That Are Way Scarier Than the Movie
Image
Movies frequently use novels as source material. When authors create rich, vibrant stories inside their pages, it's hard not to want to see them played out on the big screen. Countless fairy tales, children's books, dramas and romance novels eventually become films. For horror movie fans, they can also see their favorite books turned into fantastically scary movies.

Sometimes, a reader's imagination is a lot scarier than that of a movie adaptation. These horror books may have been adapted into entertaining, beloved movies, but they are still worth reading because of the frights they deliver. Horror fans will be missing out if they don't add these terrifying novels to their Tbr lists.

Updated on March 11, 2025, by Robert Vaux: Horror novels provide easy name recognition and a built-in audience. Hollywood has no shortage of horror movie adaptations that can't quite match the terrors evoked by their source material. The article is updated with five new entries,...

Liam Neeson And Owen Wilson's Supernatural Horror Movie Is A Late '90s Visual Delight
Image
Shirley Jackson's "The Haunting of Hill House" draws us into its gothic, macabre world even before we set our sights on the titular mansion. When we finally see the scary residence, Jackson's haunting prose etches the picture of a house that observes and reacts to human presence, being every bit sentient as its inhabitants. The true horror, however, lies in the unspoken fears evoked by such a horrible, surreal place. When the mansion brings out the worst anxieties in our protagonist, Eleanor Vance, it's hard not to slip into her shoes and absorb some of her fears.

As the key to capturing the heart of Jackson's chilling tale is to explore these subtleties, few adaptations have managed to reinvent the book's premise on its own terms. The most effective and notable effort (so far) is Mike Flanagan's "The Haunting of Hill House," which uses Jackson's haunted house...

Plainly, lots of movies about hauntings or ghosts belong to the horror genre, since the idea of spirits returning or affecting people in the living world is an inherently unsettling one. You can look at the likes of The Sixth Sense, The Shining (at least kind of), The Innocents, and The Haunting, among others. There’s no shortage of horror movies that are either literally about a haunting, or possess some kind of haunting quality.

Hilary Duff Starred In One Of Metacritic's Lowest-Rated Horror Movies
Image
Movies and TV shows about true crime can be hit or miss, to say the least; sometimes, the families of real killers accuse the project of exploitation, and other times, it's just insensitive. That's what makes former Disney teen idol Hilary Duff's 2019 film "The Haunting of Sharon Tate" so baffling. Not only is it based on the very real murder of Sharon Tate at the hands of Charles Manson and his followers in her Hollywood home in 1969, but it has Duff, as Tate, playing the murdered woman's ghost as she relives the events of the horrific Manson killings.

"The Haunting of Sharon Tate" is, to put it lightly, a bizarre movie, and though it's not Duff's fault that this misguided project is pretty bad, the evidence of its numerous failures as a movie (and retelling of Tate's death) is evident in its Metacritic score. The movie only earned a...

Presence Has A Delightful Easter Egg Only Horror Fans Will Notice
Image
Steven Soderbergh's "Presence" is steadily building a reputation as an unconventional ghost story, with the maverick director choosing to, in effect, play the ghost himself and shoot the entire film from the ghost's point of view. As my review out of the 2024 Sundance Film Festival (where the film premiered) explains, this technique allows "Presence" to straddle the line between a found footage movie and a character Pov film in a subversively clever way: While the camera is disembodied enough to move at will and be present in situations that another human person couldn't observe, Soderbergh never lets us forget the fact that there's an identity to this point of view, even if the entity itself doesn't know who they are at first.

This perspective means that "Presence" is less a terrifying supernatural horror film and more of a thoughtful, character-based thriller, because after all, we know where the ghost...

'Nosferatu' Director Reveals the Film's Biggest Influence
Image
Robert Eggers, the director of 2024's notable vampire film Nosferatu, has revealed the influences that he took into account when writing and directing the modern revival of F.W. Murnau's movie of the same name. Surprisingly, it is not a vampire film.

Eggers spoke to Variety about all things Nosferatu, and the director addressed the film's sexual element, which has been present in all Nosferatu adaptations, albeit by the standards of every period they were made in. 1922, Murnau had to conceal the steamy content cleverly. In 1979, Werner Herzog had to do something similar with his version called Nosferatu the Vampyre.

Robert Eggers' 'Nosferatu' is one of the most anticipated films of the year, but not many know the differences between Count Orlok and Count Dracula.

10 Great Horror Series That Are Perfect From Start to Finish

As one of the most successful genres in fiction, horror has slowly worked its way into television, leading to a long list of brilliant and scary shows, from American Horror Story to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. These series can range from compressed miniseries to long-running shows that lead the audience on a years-long journey with the characters. “My first response was that you couldn’t do it”: Mike Flanagan Almost Gave Up on ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ Before Making a Crucial Change

Mike Flanagan has proven his mastery in the art of horror filmmaking, and with successful shows like The Midnight Club and The Fall of the House of Usher, it’s easy to see why he’s the go-to director when it comes to adapting horror stories for the screen.

Also known for helming the widely acclaimed Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House, the filmmaker knew exactly how to go about the project in a way that would not compromise the story. His familiarity with Shirley Jackson’s novel allowed him to see the elements he could take from it and mold it into a new story that still respects the source material.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle - How To Complete The Haunting Mystery in Gizeh
Image
In Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, players can solve optional side mysteries such as The Haunting for additional rewards like Adventure Points and hidden items. Some of these items can be Adventure Books, which are quite valuable as they can be used to upgrade Indy's combat prowess, health and stamina bars, and inventory management. However, sometimes they can also be collectible items, such as Ancient Relics, that will initiate additional fieldwork quests.

Each level in this game contains quite a few mysteries to solve, and Gizeh is no exception. Exploring every nook and cranny of the levels will typically yield new quests and rewards to engage with, which aligns with the adventurous nature of the Indiana Jones franchise. Mysteries can be initiated in a number of ways, but collecting documents and notes from around the levels is a surefire way to find them. One of these mysteries in Gizeh is "The Haunting,...

Kevin Bacon to attend a 25th anniversary screening of Stir of Echoes in Hollywood
Image
Beyond Fest has announced something that should make fans of 1999’s tragically under-appreciated film Stir of Echoes very happy. There will be a special 25th anniversary screening of the film in Hollywood on Saturday, December 15.

Stir of Echoes was based on the book A Stir of Echoes by Richard Matheson, and if you think his book was a one-hit wonder, boy are you wrong! Matheson also wrote I Am Legend, The Shrinking Man, What Dreams May Come and the short story Duel, all of which were made into films.

His book Hell House was adapted to film as The Legend of Hill House, Button, Button’s onscreen title is The Box, and Bid Time Return was adapted as Somewhere in Time (starring Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeve).

David Koepp was a big fan of Matheson’s work, and he directed and wrote the screenplay for Stir of Echoes. Kevin Bacon...

Horror Favourites – Director Airell Anthony Hayles
Steve Guttenberg
Airell Anthony Hayles is no stranger to the world of horror. The British filmmaker, producer, and writer has steadily carved out a space for himself in the genre, delivering a mix of thought-provoking narratives and imaginative frights. With a degree in Theatre and Film Studies from Goldsmiths College, University of London, Airell’s passion for storytelling and genre cinema has led him to work on projects as varied as Heckle, starring Steve Guttenberg and Dani Dyer, and Werewolf Santa, a darkly comedic twist on holiday folklore.

His latest project, Advent, premieres at FrightFest Halloween before its digital release on 25 November 2024. The film blends supernatural horror with contemporary themes, drawing inspiration from the sinister “Blue Whale Challenge” and placing its protagonist—a social media influencer—at the mercy of a cursed advent calendar. It’s a concept that embodies Airell’s approach to horror: merging unsettling modern realities with classic storytelling tropes.

Father Figures Cast & Character Guide
Image
The 2017 R-rated comedy movie Father Figures is a creative road movie that follows two adult brothers as they attempt to find their biological dad. After learning that their mother had lied to them their entire lives, Kyle and Peter are determined to figure out who their father is and set off across the country to find him. Along the way, they meet various men who could potentially be their father, and the brothers bond over their various adventures, creating a tale that is both funny and, at times, heartfelt.

Though the R-rated comedy received a lackluster response from critics and audiences and was not financially successful upon release, streaming audiences are now reassessing the movie and are realizing just how funny it actually is. Father Figures' quirky and underrated plot is supported by a cast of A-list stars that includes seasoned comedy veterans and expert dramatic actors.

Keanu Reeves Action Thriller ‘Speed’ Finds New Streaming Home Next Month
Image
“Pop quiz, hotshot…” Where can fans feel the need for Speed (1994) again? Well, Keanu Reeves’ highest-rated action flick begins streaming Dec. 1 on Hulu. Director Jan de Bont’s film, Speed, registers an almost perfect Tomatometer rating of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of this writing, which just edges out another Reeves fan-favorite, John Wick: Chapter 4 (94%).

Armed with its impressive Rotten Tomatoes score from the critics, it’s easy to see how Speed lucratively burst onto the scene well over 55 Mph back in 1994. The must-see action flick boasted an incredible cast that featured not only Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, but showed off the acting talents of Dennis Hopper as the villainous Howard Payne, while also featuring the heartbreaking demise of Jeff Daniel's character, Harry.

All the ingredients came together to create the perfect storm for Reeves and his cast members, as Speed showed strong at the box office...

What 'The Babadook' Showed Us About the Trauma of Abuse
Image
It's been a decade since the release of The Babadook. Written and directed by Jennifer Kent, The Babadook was one of the most exciting horror exports to come along since The Ring and immediately gained critical and commercial acclaim. The Babadook received praise from film critic Mark Kermode and director William Friedkin as an unrelenting tour-de-force that shocked audiences and inspired discussion pertaining to its content. Most of the story takes place in a confined space and features a look at someone spiraling downwards into a pit of despair, something certainly reminiscent of Repulsion and The Haunting. Jennifer Kent succeeded in making audiences afraid of the monster that might be lurking under their bed again.

Ah, yes. The monster in the closet and under the bed is the basic fear that so many small children possess. Jennifer Kent examined this horror and dread in The Babadook while also touching upon...

Image
Have your tissues at the ready if you're a fan of The Conjuring universe! Lead actress Vera Farmiga took to her Instagram earlier today to post a heartwarming farewell tribute to her co-star, Patrick Wilson, in honor of the movie wrapping filming soon.

Based on the real demonologists of the same name, fans have lovingly embraced Farmiga and Wilson's portrayals of Lorraine and Ed Warren, who they have faithfully portrayed in The Conjuring Universe since it started in 2013. For more than a decade, we've fallen in love with the tender romance nurtured between the two actors on-screen in more than three films, and now we'll get to see the grand finale next year when The Conjuring: Last Rites releases in theaters.

In Farmiga's post, she noted that she and Wilson said "I do" to playing these characters in their initial Warner Bros. contract and have enjoyed their time together ever since.

Interview: Writer & director Warren Dudley on his period horror film ‘Fright’
Image
To mark the digital release of the acclaimed period horror film Fright on Prime, writer and director Warren Dudley reflects on the challenges/joys of indie filmmaking, his passion for football and what frightens him.

Your latest film, Fright, recently enjoyed a successful World premiere at FrightFest 2024, where it was compared to The Haunting and The Innocents. Describe what the occasion was like.

The entire Frightfest experience was the usual festival mix of nervous excitement and terror! It was the first time the cast and crew were seeing the film too so I was really hoping they would love how it turned out – and I think they did. The paying audience added even more pressure, being made up of seasoned horror fans who, by that point, had already watched around 25 films over the weekend so that was quite stressful.

However, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive from the audience and the Frightfest critics.

Mike Flanagan Addresses Potential For More The Haunting Shows After Moving From Netflix To Prime Video

The horror creative produced the two horror miniseries as Netflix exclusives, the first adapting Shirley Jackson's 1959 novel of the same name, and the second based on Henry James' novella The Turn of the Screw. Despite critical praise, The Haunting season 3 was never created, with Flanagan later leaving Netflix for Prime Video in 2023.

Now, Flanagan has responded to a question about more The Haunting TV shows on Bluesky, confirming the horror anthology series isn't coming back. However, he has confirmed multiple new series are in the works for Prime Video, specifying that his first for them is going to be an adaptation of Stephen King's Carrie. Mubi Podcast Expanded | Nothing Ever Likes To Die—Even a Haunted House

The sixth season of the Mubi Podcast, titled “Haunted Homes,” considers how movies about haunted houses let us explore—and often parallel—our relationships with our homes. This five-part series is guest-hosted and written by author, film programmer, podcaster, and horror expert Anna Bogutskaya. Below she introduces this special, haunted season. To listen to the show and subscribe on your preferred podcast app, click here.In 1950, science-fiction author Ray Bradbury wrote: “Nothing ever likes to die—even a room.” Seventy-four years later, I read those words and think of how a house can become haunted. In Bradbury’s story “The Veld,”two parents try to unplug a room that is capable of manifesting into reality whatever their two raucous (read: sociopathic) children imagine. It happens to be lions. The back-and-forth between them about what to do with the room—which is and isn’t a character, because it is implied...

Image
Bestselling horror author Stephen King, the writer of scary works of art like The Shining, Pet Sematary, and It, has spoken about the most terrifying movie experiences he's ever had to endure. And while his horror designs are extremely sophisticated, the things that scare him the most seem to be the most simple ones.

As reported by Variety, Stephen King wrote an essay in their spooky season piece of "Varietys 100 Best Horror Movies of All Time." The author's contribution was short, but it spanned decades of the genre with a few comparisons between pivotal works of horror that defined generations. The question is: how do you scare a man like Stephen King when he's written books like Carrie, Misery and The Stand? This was his answer:

"I thought deeply about this question, perhaps more deeply than the subject my scariest horror movie deserves but then, Ive seen a lot of horror movies,...

'Low-Budget Masterpiece': Stephen King Names the Scariest Horror Movie Ever
Image
Horror mastermind Stephen King has weighed in on the debate over which horror movie could be declared as the scariest of them all. While King acknowledged he may have picked other titles earlier on in life, there's one he has to "ultimately" name as the overall scariest horror film of all time.

King shared his thoughts in a new guest essay written for Variety. He clarified that, as a teenager, he'd have picked The Haunting, while by the late 1990s, he felt that The Blair Witch Project qualified as the scariest horror movie. Now, all things considered, King dubbed the classic zombie horror film Night of the Living Dead as the scariest horror film.

The Best Movies About Ghosts, from ‘The Haunting’ and ‘Nanny’ to ‘The Others’ and ‘Beetlejuice’
Image
Like witches, vampires, and zombies, ghosts can be scary as hell. But there is something about the stories of lingering dead spirits that can be both awe-inspiring and spooky at once. The often invisible presence of ghosts allows filmmakers to explore the unsettling aspects of character psychology through the use of sound and space. Some of the best ghost stories aren’t scary at all; instead, they liberate directors from the restrictions of space and time to mine spiritual and existential depths. It’s a genre that has attracted some of the medium’s greatest artists to create some of their finest work.

One of the great aspects of ghost stories are their ambiguity, how their presence reflects more on the humans who see them then the spectral beings themselves. Maybe the great, definitive ghost story in the literary world is Henry James’ “The Turn of the Screw,” his 1898 novella...
