“Paris in Harlem” director Christina Kallas is set to direct limited series ‘The Second Attack’ for Ard Mediathek, Variety can exclusively reveal.
The six-part political thriller envisions what would happen if an “unthinkable war” were to take place on the world stage.
Oliver Bottini (“Algiers Confidential”) has written the screenplay.
“Inspired by true events, ‘The Second Attack’ follows Alex, a young German who tries to uncover the truth about the murder of his father in 2003, a sniper for the Bundeswehr,” reads the official logline. “Alex soon discovers that not only was his father working for the German Federal Intelligence Service, but that he was pivotal in the coverup of ‘Curveball’ –a refugee who defected from Iraq in 1999 claiming that he had worked as a chemical engineer in Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction program and therefore was in custody of German Federal Intelligence Service. It’s not as easy to bring a conspiracy to life on screen as it once was. Gone are the days of seedy thrillers and neo-noirs operating on the now-laughable premise that corruption is invisible to the average person’s naked eye. Closer on the horizon, yet still behind us, are conspiratorial thrillers based around big, dangerous emotions: think the aggressive patriotism of “24” or the paranoid individualism of “Mr. Robot.” The past few years have seen the world pushed into an era of high conspiracy, in which talk of plots and cover-ups are both more mainstream and more baffling than ever.

A day after Neil Young’s music left Spotify, the “Heart of Gold” singer is showing nothing but love for Jeff Bezos’ Amazon Music.
Big free-trial love that is, and a solid middle finger to Spotify.
Having requested earlier this week that his songs leave the Swedish music streamer if Spotify continued to support Joe Rogan’s “spread of misinformation” over Covid vaccines, Young took to social media this afternoon to praise Amazon Music and offer relocating fans a sweet deal:

For almost 100 years, the motion picture academy has honored the best in film, but many times the winners aren’t always the best remembered, or the films that go on to become classics. At the 14th ceremony, “How Green Was My Valley” famously won Best Picture over “Citizen Kane,” now considered by most filmmakers, historians and cinephiles as the greatest movie ever made – and even those who disagree acknowledge its profound influence on the industry. Additionally, there were quite a few now-classic films and performances that either didn’t win, or were snubbed altogether. Let’s flashback 80 years ago to the 1942 Oscars ceremony.
SEE15 biggest Oscar Best Picture upsets, ranked
Hosted by Bob Hope, the ceremony took place on February 26, less than three months after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and a month after beloved actress Carole Lombard was killed in a plane crash – while returning home after selling war bonds.

“I am a product of my dream. Even as a child, I wanted to be an actress and enter this world, even though it was very far from my reality,” said Monica Bellucci at the Torino Film Festival, where she accepted the Stella Della Mole Award for Artistic Innovation.
Bellucci also held a masterclass at the National Cinema Museum of Turin, discussing her career alongside Antongiulio Panizzi, who directed her recently in “The Girl in the Fountain.” In the film, which screened for the first time at the festival, Bellucci plays Anita Ekberg, the Swedish star famous for her role in “La Dolce Vita.”

Rosamund Pike stars as Moiraine, a powerful magic-user who guides five young people on a perilous journey around the world. Due to its persistent on-screen presence, the swimming pool can be taken for granted; but beneath the surface it is cinema’s Jungian friend, representing secrets lying underneath. It exudes glamour and danger, shifting beyond conscious realms. It is a key to transformation, coming of age tales and renewed relationships. It is a status symbol and whether or not the pool is intact says a lot about the mood of the film and the state of its characters. Away from states of intensity, the swimming pool emerges on screen as a signifier of a time to unwind and to forget life past the poolside. The films featured in this mix show how the pool alludes mysterious symbolism and sexual awakening; murder, lust, and love brush shoulders as sun kissed babes in bikinis whisper sweet truths or uncover deadly secrets (such as the strange swimming pool activities in Three Women or...

Phillip Noyce has long been a purveyor of great thrillers, from Patriot Games and Rabbit-Proof Fence to Salt and while he's kept busy both producing and directing over the last decade, his work has mostly been in TV though that's clearly changing in the coming years as he's currently attached to a number of feature films.

In the black comedy thriller “Next Door,” the directorial debut of actor Daniel Brühl, the main character, Daniel, is a successful actor living in an old quarter of Berlin. His day is about to be ruined, and his life too. Variety spoke to Brühl – whose upcoming acting credits include “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” and Matthew Vaughn’s “The King’s Man” – about the film, which plays in competition this week at the Berlin Film Festival.
Daniel, played by Brühl, seems to be remarkably similar to Brühl in real life – he is of German-Spanish heritage, the hit that launched his career was a “Stasi comedy,” and since then he has acted in Hollywood movies and series. But this is not Brühl, but a “heightened” version of him, the actor-director says.
The film starts with Daniel sitting in his beautiful Berlin apartment, preparing to fly to London to audition for a Hollywood super-hero movie.

Released twenty years ago, Under Suspicion saw big names like Morgan Freeman, Gene Hackman and Monica Bellucci take to the big screen in this gripping American-French thriller. Set in the town of San Juan in Puerto Rico and directed by Stephen Hopkins, the film is based on the 1981 French production Garde à Vue and the 1970s British novel Brainwash by John Wainwright.

Freeman is Victor Benezet, a police captain who isn’t quite as fortuitous as Henry. His wife has custody of his two daughters who live back in the Us whilst he lives alone in a cheap back-alley apartment.

HBO finally fully committed to one of the several “Game of Thrones” spinoffs it had in development when it gave “House of the Dragon” a straight-to-series order last October. That pickup came on the same day that another potential spinoff — the one starring Naomi Watts that HBO had actually filmed a pilot for — was scrapped. That untitled prequel, referred to internally as “Bloodmoon,” was set thousands of years before the events of “Game of Thrones.” TheWrap sat down with HBO programming chief Casey Bloys at the Television Critics Association press tour Wednesday and asked him to break down the reasoning behind picking one project over the other. Also Read: 'Game of Thrones' Prequel 'House of the Dragon' Doesn't Have a Premiere Date Yet, But Here Is Casey Bloys' 'Suspicion' “In general for a pilot, and this is very much the case in this one, there’s...

Friday night saw Sanfic Industria close out a week of co-production meetings, screenings and tutoring with an awards ceremony where a handful of the 34 projects and six works in progress at this year’s 6th edition were recognized.
In addition to the awards ceremony, Friday night’s festivities included a 10th anniversary party for the partnership between CinemaChile and Sanfic.
“To me this partnership is vital because the two complement one another,” said Parox founder-producer Sergio Gándara, whose latest TV series “Invisible Heroes” opened this year’s inaugural Sanfic Series focus.
Next to a giant cake covered in sparklers, he went on, “The partnership fosters an international community. Just as CinemaChile brings Chile to the world, Sanfic provides a place for the world to come to Chile.”

Night and the City
Written by Jo Eisinger
Directed by Jules Dassin
UK, 1950
Harry Fabian is probably the best at what he does, even if he is never very successful. Richard Widmark’s character in Night and the City, out now on a gorgeous new Criterion Collection Blu-ray, is a low-level con who works wherever he can, however he can, doing whatever he can to make a buck. He enters Jules Dassin’s 1950 film noir classic on the run; he will always be on the run: always hustling, always running. Sincere though his half-baked plans may be, he is perpetually—pathetically—down on his luck. He has the ambition, there’s no doubt about that, and as he shrewdly stumbles past one obstacle after another, it becomes almost humorous in the way he manages to charm his way through life, always just by the skin of his teeth. He cooks...

Watching the films of Wes Anderson, its easy to get sucked into their pastel-colored worlds where people are childish yet intellectual. Well, in his latest, The Grand Budapest Hotel, the imaginative writer-director built the entire fictional nation of Zubrowka. There in the titular resort, the taciturn yet tender Gustave H rules, a concierge of great class and crassness who gets entangled in a tale of intrigue when one of his many lovers dies in mysterious circumstances. Under suspicion, he must depend on his ever-faithful lobby boy Zero to aid him in clearing his name. When Anderson wrote the role of Gustave H, he had only one actor in mind: the internationally acclaimed Ralph Fiennes. The English thespian has earned Oscar nominations for celebrated dramas like Schindler's List and The English Patient. He became an icon as the vicious Lord Voldemort of the Harry Potter movies. Now, for his first endeavor...

It was rumored earlier this year that Liam Neeson would return to reprise his role as Ra's al Ghul in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises. He was spotted on the set of the film, but until today there's been no confirmation of his involvement. Warner Bros. made the announcement in the production notes for the film that says,
Neeson next appears in Peter Berg's actioner "Battleship," and he also will be seen in Christopher Nolan's much-anticipated action thriller "The Dark Knight Rises.
It makes perfect sense to me that his character would be back as this Batman finale as we've heard Nolan would bring everything back around in full circle in the franchise. I can't wait to see what this film has in store for us! I just can't help but think it's going to be mind blowing.
Josh Pence is playing Ra's al Ghul in the films flashbacks.

There’s a decidedly oriental tinge to this year’s Gold Coast Film Festival. Jiang Wen’s extremely successful rice-noodle Chinese comedy western Let The Bullets Fly (which had its premiere at the Brisbane International Film Festival – read my review Here) has been chosen as the opening night film and there’s a ‘Cool Japan’ line-up which features the Australian premieres of Makoto Shinkai‘s (Voice of a Distant Star) exquisitely rendered anime Children Who Chase Lost Voices From Deep Below - a nostalgic and mystical adventure concerning family loss which firmly places the young director in a league with the laudable likes of manga masters Katsuhiro Ohtomo, Mamoru Oshii and Hayao Miyazaki. On the non-animated front we have the welcome return screenings of Anh Hung Tran‘s Sydney Film festival favourite Norweigan Wood and Takashi Miike‘s kinetic Seven Samurai throwback 13 Assassins.
