Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today, Conor and I try to ice skate uphill to talk about Wesley Snipes! Our Snipes B-Sides include: Boiling Point, Drop Zone, U.S. Marshals, and The Art of War. The action star broke onto the scene in the mid-80s, turned heads with Major League, then dished out a slew of hits.
We discuss what makes Snipes the perfect action star, what changed for his career (good and bad) in the late ‘90s, and his recent Hollywood comeback.
Additional topics include Snipes’ amazing character names (Flipper Purify! John Cutter!), his multi-hyphenate accomplishments, and the high energy that often separates him from the fray.

Reteaming provocative Polish director Jan Komasa with screenwriter Mateusz Pacewicz, “The Hater” hits Netflix mere months after the duo’s acclaimed impostor-priest drama “Corpus Christi” was nominated for the Oscars’ newly rechristened international feature award. Timing wise, that’s a savvy acquisition of a youth-targeted thriller that deals with such topics as ethics, elections and online obsession, further boosted by the movie’s recent win at the Tribeca Film Festival — the event may have been canceled by the coronavirus, but the jury still voted, picking “The Hater” as the best of its international competition.
Such bona fides may inspire the streams for this . But Netflix has oddly omitted one key detail: “The Hater” is a sequel to Komasa’s 2011 button-pusher “Suicide Room.”
In that film, a game of truth or dare inspires a popular high school kid to kiss another guy, an act that’s caught on camera and shared online,...

In the days leading up to the Fourth of July, New York governor Andrew Cuomo took to social media urging state residents to avoid indoor parties and large gatherings. But it seems folks didn’t listen and after seeing pictures of packed beaches and stocked bars surface online, a second wave of coronavirus-induced quarantine and social distancing seems closer than ever before.

Every year, movies are being produced at faster rates and in greater quantity, and that’s thanks – in part – to streamers like Netflix. Because of their business strategy, customers can now watch thousands of films for the same price as a single cinema ticket. As such, the entertainment appetite of the American public has been growing stronger with each passing season. To that end, here’s an overview of the best new movies coming to Netflix next month.
First off, we got science fiction and fantasy. Fans of visiting other worlds will be in for a treat in July, as Netflix will be adding Cloud Atlas to its library. Directed by the Wachowski siblings – the same ones who created the now-infamous Matrix franchise – this time-traveling epic follows the stories of a handful of reincarnating souls who live their different yet similar lives across several centuries.

How does Netflix determine which titles leave and which enter its dauntingly large library? Do they carefully analyze viewing statistics and find content that caters to our interests? Or do they simply throw an immense amount of content at the wall and watch what sticks?
The answer is probably a mix of both. Like most entertainment companies, Netflix knows full well the potential of mathematics, but it also respects the creative spirit. As such, some new additions may have been carefully chosen, and others not. In any case, here’s an overview of the 81 new movies and TV shows headed to the platform this coming week.
Let’s begin with the basics. One of the most inoffensive yet well-crafted Hollywood films arriving is Donnie Brasco. Produced in 1997, it stars now-legendary actor Johnny Depp in one of his first lead roles ever, and tells the story of an undercover cop who...

The summer movie season, as we usually know it, isn’t happening this year, with few big releases planning to drop over the next couple of months, even if cinemas are just starting to reopen. Instead, then, it’s falling on Netflix and the various other streaming services to pull their weight and give movie lovers a range of new content to feast on. Thankfully, July isn’t looking too shabby for original films and TV, not to mention lots of classics or underrated gems appearing on all the usual sites.
Of course, Netflix has the most original output coming across next month. TV fans, in particular, have got much to look forward to, including season 2 of The Umbrella Academy. In fact, it’s a good month for fantasy series based off comic books all-round, as we’ve also got Arthurian retelling Cursed and super-powered action show Warrior Nun coming as well.

You know, plenty of streaming services would treat the dog days of summer as an excuse to slow down. At Netflix, however, the content buffet is still open, baby. Despite the coronavirus pandemic shutting down all of Hollywood for an extended period of time, Netflix’s new releases for July 2020 are still jam-packed with a host of familiar originals.
The blockbuster this month is probably The Umbrella Academy season 2. The next installment for the Hargreeves family arrives on July 31. And if that’s too long of a wait for you, Netflix gets the month off to a strong start with a string of originals as well. Unsolved Mysteries arrives on July 1, followed by Warrior Nun on July 2, and The Baby-Sitter’s Club on July 3. That’s not even to mentioned the feminist take on Arthurian legend, Cursed, which premiers on July 17.
There are a couple of intriguing original movies to consider this month as well.

As the minutes slowly tick by in the lifeless thriller “Cold Blood,” it’s easy to mourn for what might have been. Jean Reno stars as Henry, a veteran hitman seeking isolation in a remote cabin in the Pacific Northwest, which could have made for a contemplative and melancholy reimagining of his signature role in Luc Besson’s “Léon: The Professional.” When Henry is forced to care for a mysterious, injured woman who interrupts his solitude, one envisions a close-quarters psychological cat-and-mouse game between two dangerous and deeply secretive people. It turns out we get neither of those, just a bland and forgettable B-movie that came and went quickly in France last May and looks to do the same upon its day-and-date release in the U.S.
Reno, who turns 71 this month, hasn’t burned through the credibility he amassed with the cool kids during his long-ago career peak working with Besson.

Time to brush up on The Art of War.
On Quantico Season 3 Episode 11, Conor Devlin continued his attack on our team. With each passing episode, Devlin is proving how formidable of a foe he truly is.
He can do intimidation. He can get his hands dirty, and he can play some mind tricks on people. It's safe to say he's mastered the art of war.
It's great that Devlin isn't a one trick pony. He's constantly proving how much we should fear him. He may not be plotting an end of the world level event, but he's not one to be underestimated.
The fact that he's able to play Owen and company and Garret King is impressive. Devlin knew what buttons to push, even with Alex, someone he had never met.
Would it be weird to give him a round of applause? Because Devlin did well.

It was, honestly, the speed of the decision that was so shocking. In recent years, there have been no shortage of instances where a public figure’s bad remarks on social media have cost them their jobs or other opportunities. But usually it has taken time, even beyond the initial apology, for the ramifications to be dealt out.
Not so in this case. Within mere hours of Roseanne Barr hitting “send” on a racist Tweet Tuesday morning, ABC president Channing Dungey released a statement that didn’t just condemn Barr’s message, but canceled her show. Just a few hours later, the show’s planned Emmys campaign was a thing of the past, while the show’s entire digital existence on the ABC press site was scrubbed away. Soon, other networks (including Viacom’s cable channels and the digital network Laff) were even removing repeats of the original “Roseanne.”

“The Simpsons” has responded to criticism about the stereotypical portrayal of Springfield’s Kwik-e-Mart proprietor Apu Nahasapeemapetilon. On Sunday’s episode, “No Good Read Goes Unpunished,” Marge and Lisa Simpson allude to the fact that “The Simpsons” has not quite figured out what to do with the character, or when to address it.
In the episode, the Simpsons visit a book store after Marge confiscates the family’s digital devices. At the store, Bart gravitates to “The Art of War” by Sun Tzu, and uses what he learns to take on Homer. Marge, meanwhile, attempts to hook her daughter on her favorite book as a child, [the fictional] “The Princess in the Garden” by Heloise Hodgeson Burwell — yes, a riff on “The Secret Garden” by Frances Hodgson Burnett.
Once Marge begins reading “The Princess in the Garden” to Lisa, she quickly realizes the old book was a lot more offensive and racist than she remembered.

The world came crashing down on Woz and Stahl as they assured one another’s personal destruction on Shades of Blue Season 2 Episode 2.
Our TV Fanatics Stacy Glanzman, Jasmine Peterson, and Christine Orlando debate whether Woz went too far, who is the weak link, and is Julia expendable after “Eye of the Hurricane.”
If one member on Woz’s crew were to turn on the rest, who do you think it would be?
Stacy: Hmm, maybe Tess. She's in debt, she was shot, she admits she makes bad decisions...that's all kind of a recipe for disaster. I don't really think she will turn on them, but if she were desperate enough, anything is possible.
Jasmine: I can see that, Stacy. I think Lohman is still a wild-card who can blow things up. I never rule him out of anything.

The gauntlet has been thrown down: will Delaney accept? What the hell do you think?
In the action packed Taboo Season 1 Episode 4, the big challenge of a duel from that uber dick Thorne was the crescendo, but we'll have to wait a week to see if Delaney takes the bait.
I challenge James Delaney to a duel. At dawn. To the death. Do you accept? Do You Accept?

I expect he will, and we will have a magnificently shot duel scene at dawn, in a fog shrouded field, in beautiful slow motion. But this isn't a lock by any means.
Given how the Americans have kindly offered to waste Thorne, Delaney might just take them up on it.

It’s no secret that Hollywood studios have spent the last few years courting Chinese moviegoers or that some American films and franchises find larger audiences abroad than at home. But today, Lionsgate announced that it’s more or less cutting through the bullshit: the sixth big screen dance-off in the Step Up series is going to be a Chinese-language production made in China.
According to a report by Deadline, the Beijing-set film will be directed by Ron Yuan, a veteran Chinese-American stuntman and stunt choreographer whose long resume includes The Art Of War, Black Dynamite, and Wild Card. Yuan is also a prolific video game voice actor, and has had his share of recurring TV series roles; he played the Triad gangster Ryu Tom on Sons Of Anarchy and, more recently, the Mongol prince Nayan on Netflix’s Marco Polo.

Some thoughts on tonight's The Night Of — and on my hopes for next week's finale — coming up just as soon as this is for Law & Order... "Did I raise an animal?" -Mrs. Khan The first installment of The Night Of was among the most vivid, engrossing episodes of television I've seen in a long time. It's not that the larger story was all that new, but Price and Zaillian's attention to detail and ability to inject enormous amounts of dread into seemingly innocuous moments made it feel fresh and alive and different. The series has had no choice but to become a bit more conventional with each ensuing hour. There are still peculiarities unique to it and its characters (though Stone's eczema remains under control, the scene where he visits one of Don Taylor's former sugar mamas makes sure to dwell on the woman's manicured bare feet) and each...

A review of tonight's The Night Of coming up just as soon as there's an excellent chance I'll hit 75 homers this year... "If the answer's yes, take the deal. If it's no, don't." -Chandra As we reach the midway point, The Night Of remains two shows in one — the legal/investigative drama with Stone, Box, and company; and the prison drama with Naz and Freddy — tied together by Naz's fate, obviously, and the moments when he crosses from one show to the other, but also by the ways that Price and Zaillian cleverly show how similar the two worlds are. In both arenas, Naz spends "The Art of War" considering deals that offer a path of least resistance, but with strings. The plea bargain Alison Crowe negotiates with Helen Weiss would make him a free man by his mid-30s, but he'd always be a convicted killer, and his parents...

After Sleepy Hollow fans got past the shock of the fall finale’s final moments — in which Abbie sacrificed herself in order to save Jenny, Ichabod, Joe and the rest of the town — a small yet important question rose from the rubble:

This week, I realized I ought to keep an episode-by-episode tally of how many times Crane raises his index finger, all "aha!"-like. It is one of my favorite Crane-isms, as far as physical mannerisms go. It handily beats out that cocked-eyebrow thing he does when he's feeling particularly arch. Then "The Art of War" happened. During this delightful hour of Scooby Gang badassery, I was the one who seemed to be doing all the "aha!" gestures.I'd give this episode five stars for the ending alone, which deliciously subverted all of Sleepy Hollow's usual, predictable plotting and structure — but thankfully, there are plenty of other reasons that "The Art of War" deserves a top-notch rating. Romance! Rock climbing! At least three unexpected twists! Let's dive into it. Reynolds asks Abbie to hold down the fort — that is, holding onto his "duty phone," hummina hummina — while he goes to...

Life lesson from this week’s Sleepy Hollow: Don’t put off telling your loved ones how you feel about them, because you never know when one of you might get turned into a glowing war beast summoned by a very bad man with an even worse agenda.
So I suppose we all owe Atticus Nevins some gratitude, because if it weren’t for his wild-eyed pursuit of Jenny Mills — aka the walking, talking Shard of Anubis, thanks to her touching the gem barehanded last episode — we’d never get the Joe/Jenny and Ichabod/Abbie tender moments we see in this week’s hour.

Previously on Sleepy Hollow, Pandora descended into hell, Crane had difficulty obtaining Us citizenship, and Jenny started glowing like lava. All of these issues continue to be nearly insurmountable in "The Art of War," with some added job stress on the side. Maybe these people should just move. Satanic things never happen in, like, Topeka, right? All I'm saying that any place in the Northeast that has tank top weather and a forest full of green leaves in November cannot be trusted.
