Eva Mendes was never interested in acting growing up: she even considered pursuing a life as a Catholic nun before she found her true calling completely by chance. The Miami native had never so much as taken a drama lesson when a scout noticed her photograph inside a friend’s portfolio and convinced her to drop out of her marketing management course and start spending her time on auditions instead.
Whoever that was deserves credit for single-handedly setting a modern sex symbol on her way to stardom.
Mendes made a name for herself on the B-movie scene with appearances in Children Of The Corn V: Fields Of Terror (1998) and Urban Legends: Final Cut (2000), and was soon attracting the attention of Antoine Fuqua, director of Training Day (2001). Her performance as Denzel Washington’s mistress in the award winning crime thriller was very much a breakout, and she has gone on...

In her new film, The Place Beyond the Pines, she ditches glam, playing a hard-grafting waitress opposite real-life partner Ryan Gosling. She talks about how the role mirrors her upbringing and, er, why her dog's face should be pixellated
"If you see Mike Leigh," says Eva Mendes, "tell him Mendes really wants him. And I do a good cockney." So I did. Or, rather, I emailed his agent. Mendes had already done the heavy lifting. "I sent him a note maybe like eight years ago," she says, a little giddy, "and I'm sure he had no idea who I was. And then I ran into him and he was lovely. So I just hope these last eight years I've maybe done something that he's liked or could see potential in, so we could possibly work together." His films are magical, she says; they move her to tears. "I come from...

The Battle Of Algiers: The Criterion Collection (1966)
Synopsis: One of the most influential political films in history, The Battle of Algiers, by Gillo Pontecorvo, vividly re-creates a key year in the tumultuous Algerian struggle for independence from the occupying French in the 1950s. As violence escalates on both sides, children shoot soldiers at point-blank range, women plant bombs in cafe’s, and French soldiers resort to torture to break the will of the insurgents. Shot on the streets of Algiers in documentary style, the film is a case study in modern warfare, with its terrorist attacks and the brutal techniques used to combat them. Pontecorvo’s tour de force has astonishing relevance today. (criterion.com)
Special Features:
High-definition digital transfer, supervised by director of photography Marcello Gatti (with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition). Gillo Pontecorvo: The Dictatorship of Truth,...

I can’t think of anything more vapid than watching Sarah Connor and the dude from thirtysomething driving around cornfields for the good chunk of the running time of 1984′s Children of the Corn. I’m sorry but Malachai (Courtney Gains) yelling “Outlander!” doesn’t make fine art. Astonishingly, a majority of the sequels in the series have been pretty damn entertaining and a gas to watch. One of them being Ethan Wiley’s Children of the Corn V: Fields of Terror, which was his first directing assignment since House II: The Second Story.
Jason Bene: Personally, I felt Children of the Corn was tepid and overrated. It is one of the few series’ where most of the sequels outshine the original. When Tom McLoughlin sat down to write and director Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, he watched all the prior films to see what worked and what didn’t.

Unbelievably, Dimension Extreme is getting ready to release a ninth "Children of the Corn" title in August, 2011! For those of you keeping track, there has been Children of the Corn (1984), Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice (1992), Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest (1995), Children of the Corn: The Gathering (1996), Children of the Corn V: Fields of Terror (1998), Children of the Corn 666: Isaac's Return (1999) and the list goes on and on and on! All of these films are very loosely based on a short story from Stephen King's horror anthology The Night Shift (1979). Since then, there have been hours and hours of films, including a television movie, dedicated to these maize loving characters. Now, Dimension will try to capitalize on a theme that surely must be losing steam with Children of the Corn: Genesis, which will go straight to DVD. As well, the title seems to state...

With the announcement of Echo Bridge Entertainment bringing Dimension flicks to Blu-ray, we knew that there would be a parade of sequels headed our way. The only question was when. Now we know.
According to Blu-ray.com on May 10th Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest, Dracula 2000, Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers and Hellraiser: Bloodline will be making their high definition debut.
Then, a couple of days later on May 15th, Echo Bridge will be dropping a bunch of double feature Blu-rays on us in the forms of Children of the Corn V: Fields of Terror/Children of the Corn 666: Isacc's Return, From Dusk Till Dawn/From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money, Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers/Halloween: H20 and Hellraiser: Bloodline/Hellraiser: Inferno.
It's a pretty safe bet that either the packages will be bare bones or extras from the DVD's will port over.

Horror fanatics are still buzzing like chainsaws over the Academy Awards’ genre montage. Anywhere there could be a conversation about it online, there was one. Many were upset over the Twilight ‘tweens’ participation, as if their mere presence sent a message about the state of scary in Hollyweird, USA.
A few seemed happy, though, to just get a glimpse of their beloved Evil Dead and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 if only for a few seconds. But many called the selections generic and thoughtless, demanding the likes of Demons and TerrorVision instead (well, maybe not TerrorVision; that was just me).
How about Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer? Re-Animator? It’s Alive? Tombs of the Blind Dead? Coffin Joe? No list is perfect, but with a bit more care and a phone call to any one of us, the Oscars could have elevated that section into a real scream. Or maybe they...
