Don Cheadle has enjoyed an interesting and varied career encompassing success in both film and television.
He first started acting in the mid-1980s with such films as “Hamburger Hill” and “Colors.” His career took a different direction when he was cast in the spinoff series “The Golden Palace” followed by “Picket Fences.” Around this time, he also had the movie “Devil with a Blue Dress” garner him some awards attention and make nearly grab him an Oscar nomination.
Cheadle won a Golden Globe in 1999 for his role in the film “The Rat Pack,” in which he played Sammy Davis Jr. He would later go on to appear in the remake of one of Davis’ films, “Ocean’s Eleven.”
He would win a second Golden Globe in 2013 for the TV series “House of Lies” which had a multi-year run on Showtime. The series would earn him three Golden Globe nominations and four Emmy nominations,...

In the 54 years since Diahann Carroll (“Julia”) blazed a trail as the first Black female recipient of a TV Golden Globe, the list of small screen Black actresses who have won the favor of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has grown to include 12 more names, including 2023 comedic and dramatic champs Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”) and Zendaya (“Euphoria”). While this roster has long since covered TV movies and both continuing program genres, no Black woman has yet been awarded a Golden Globe for a limited series performance. There is a decent chance of that soon changing, however, given the winning potential of possible 2024 Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress contenders Uzo Aduba (“Painkiller”) and Dominique Fishback (“Swarm”).
Possible Golden Globes newcomer Fishback stars on Amazon Prime Video’s “Swarm” as Dre Greene, a mentally unstable young woman whose unhealthy obsession with a Beyoncé-esque pop star drives a wedge between her and her foster sister,...

When the 2022 Primetime Emmy nominations were revealed, Rhea Seehorn and Sydney Sweeney both had the honor of seeing their names come up twice. In addition to landing slots in the Best Drama Supporting Actress lineup for “Better Call Saul” and “Euphoria,” respectively, Seehorn (“Cooper’s Bar”) also competed for Best Short Form Actress while Sweeney (“The White Lotus”) was included among the Best Limited Series/TV Movie Supporting Actress contenders. Since neither of them had been recognized by the TV academy before, they became part of a group of 24 doubly-nominated Emmy first-timers.
Neither Seehorn nor Sweeney succeeded on either of her bids, but that isn’t surprising given the fact that only six of this group’s two dozen members have actually pulled off wins. The first such victor was Robert Cummings, who also originally established the club back in 1955. He received what would now be considered the Best Limited/Movie...

Home to films like “Lady Bird,” “Eighth Grade” and “Mid90s,” A24 is synonymous with a certain brand of indie, auteur-driven coming-of-age story. The company’s latest is “Funny Pages,” the debut feature film from writer-director Owen Kline (who you might recognize as Frank from “The Squid and the Whale”). Set in the suburbs of New Jersey, “Funny Pages” follows Robert (Daniel Zolghadri), a talented high schooler determined to make his way as a cartoonist. When his beloved teacher suddenly passes away, he rebels against his upper-middle class upbringing and abandons future plans to attend art school.
Robert’s decision to drop out of school, rent sketchy (i.e. illegal) lodgings in a boiler room and take a low-paying assistant job bring him into the path of Wallace (Matthew Maher), a former employee at one of the comic magazines Robert idolizes. With the singular goal of getting Wallace to mentor him,...

Some screen actors sneak up on you over the course of multiple memorable supporting roles, while others jar your consciousness like a crack of lightning. The latter was my experience with Ray Liotta, in a movie I walked into not even knowing his character would be part of the plot.
The film in question was Jonathan Demme’s 1986 “Something Wild,” which starts as a kooky urban comedy about bad girl (or is she?) Audrey, played by Melanie Griffith, who convinces Jeff Daniels’ upright businessman (or is he?) to go further and further out of his comfort zone. The movie switches from screwball to thriller with the appearance of Liotta as Audrey’s ex Ray, a recently-released convict who will go to any lengths to get her back.
It’s one of those performances that benefit from a new face in the role; without the comfort of familiarity, viewers don’t...

Though you may not realize it, Don Cheadle has accrued 10 Emmy nominations throughout his career, receiving bids in the comedy, drama and limited series/TV movie categories. The versatile actor, who currently stars on Showtime’s dark comedy “Black Monday” as Maurice “Mo” Monroe, has already earned two consecutive nominations for Best Comedy Actor for his performance. And although the show is ineligible for this year’s Emmys, Cheadle still has an opportunity to earn his 11th Emmy nom come July, this time in the Best Drama Guest Actor category.

While Catherine O’Hara appears on track to win a Golden Globe for “Schitt’s Creek,” Eugene Levy must face the “Ted Lasso” express. And star Jason Sudeikis has the ticket. Apple TV Plus is doing a tremendous job promoting “Ted Lasso” as a top awards contender, and in many ways it’s this year’s feel good vehicle in the way that “Schitt’s Creek” was during the last awards cycle. As the heart of “Ted Lasso,” Sudeikis may be hard to beat — especially if, again, the HFPA wants to get in and honor him before the Emmys. (Levy will have his Emmy from September to give him plenty of solace.

Ramy Youssef had one of the biggest surprises at last year’s Golden Globes when he picked up the first award of the evening for his self-titled Hulu series “Ramy.” He was clearly shocked and remarked, “I know you guys haven’t seen my show. Everyone’s like, ‘Is this an editor?'” Now Youssef returns this year looking to capture his second trophy.
Youssef is facing off against four strong competitors for Best TV Comedy Actor: Don Cheadle (“Black Monday”), Nicholas Hoult (“The Great”), Eugene Levy (“Schitt’s Creek”) and Jason Sudeikis (“Ted Lasso”). This is Cheadle’s sixth career nomination, and he’s won twice: Best TV Supporting Actor for “The Rat Pack” in 1998 and Best TV Comedy Actor in 2012 for “House of Lies.”

Is Ted Lasso destined for a big win? Can Don Cheadle do it again? The actor just received a Golden Globe nomination for the Showtime comedy “Black Monday.” The first time he was nominated for TV Comedy Actor was in 2012 for the Showtime laffer “House of Lies.” That year he went on to win. He was then nominated the next two years. For “Black Monday” the actor wants similar success for a two time Emmy nominated performance. “The Rat Pack? Hasn’t that topic been done to death?”
That is the question I was asked by some skeptical fellow writers when I mentioned I was working with author Lon Davis on Deconstructing the Rat Pack, our new book, published by Prestige Cinema Press.
It’s true: there have been a stack of books on the myth that surrounds Rat Pack members Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop, and Peter Lawford. But the fact is, myths are what have most often been printed. It reminds me of the line in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance: “When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.” Lon and I subscribe to a different belief: print the facts. PR reports of the time will lead one to believe that the Rat Pack came about organically, that their...

Emmy voters continue to prove that overdue narratives don’t factor into their decisions when picking winners. Just ask actors like Martin Sheen (“The West Wing”), Amy Poehler (“Parks and Recreation”) and last year’s Lena Headey (“Game of Thrones”), who were never able to win Emmys for their respective iconic performances. Not everyone can be as lucky as Jon Hamm (“Mad Men”), one of the rare cases of an overdue actor actually being given the Emmy for the final season of their show.
This year, while voters did finally reward overdue favorites like Maya Rudolph and Kerry Washington for the first time, there were numerous actors at the 2020 Emmys who weren’t quite as lucky. Below is a list of the nine Emmy nominees who have now racked up at least five losses from the TV academy.

“Black Monday” returned for its second season this past March. The financial industry satire follows the Jammer Group, a fictional Wall Street trading firm at the center of the real-life title event: the sudden stock market crash that took place on October 19, 1987. This year the show explored the aftermath of that crash. Scroll down for our exclusive video interviews with top Emmy contenders from the show.

The Emmys are a notoriously unsentimental bunch, as we saw last week with the guest categories, passing over overdue favorites Phylicia Rashad and Adam Sandler. Several actors went into Sunday’s Emmy telecast with numerous losses under their belt, hoping this may finally be their time to go from bridesmaid to bride. Would Sandra Oh finally find herself wielding an Emmy statuette? Could actors on the last seasons of their shows get a farewell hug, like Lena Headey? (See full list of Emmy winners.)

After racking up big box office for nearly three decades, funnyman Jim Carrey could crack the Emmy race this year with his starring role in the new Showtime series “Kidding.” Carrey has already earned a Golden Globe nomination for his series, which casts him as a popular children’s puppet show host trying to piece his life back together after the sudden death of his son. That was his seventh career bid from the HFPA; he previously won prizes for his dramatic performances in “The Truman Show” and “Man on the Moon” and competed for his comedic roles in “The Mask,” “Liar Liar,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.”

Still Eligible: Yes.
Hot Streak: Showtime has the longest nominations streak of any network in this category, with eight years in a row earning at least one slot. Spread across three actors, 13 nominations, and dating back through 2011, William H. However, a Showtime actor has never won the Emmy for Best Actor in a Comedy Series.
Fun Fact: John Goodman (“Roseanne”), Matt LeBlanc (“Friends” and “Episodes”), and Hal Linden (“Barney Miller”) have the most nominations without ever winning an Emmy in the category. Don Cheadle celebrates his 54th birthday on November 29, 2018. The actor has had an interesting and varied career encompassing success in both film and television.
Cheadle first started acting in the mid-1980s with such films as “Hamburger Hill” and “Colors.” His career took a different direction when he was cast in the spinoff series “The Golden Palace” followed by “Picket Fences.” Around this time, he also had the movie “Devil with a Blue Dress” garner him some awards attention and make nearly grab him an Oscar nomination.

The Venice Film Festival begins August 29 and possibly the most anticipated American entry is the world premiere of “A Star Is Born” starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, who also directed the film. This is at least the fourth telling of this tale. The stars change, the style of music changes, but the story apparently has something that is evergreen — the title, coincidentally, of Barbra Streisand’s Oscar-winning song in the 1976 version.
The latest big-screen reboot of “Charlie’s Angels” was announced earlier this summer, and as we speak, Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner are prepping a reimagining of “West Side Story.” It might make sense to attempt a new take on a great idea that didn’t work the first time. (The Rat Pack’s “Oceans 11” became the much better George Clooney version.) But for an iconic musical that won 10 Oscars?

Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s Eleven – a slick remake of The Rat Pack‘s 1960 film – kick started a trilogy that would dominate the early millennium on the big screen. Amassing a star-laden cast list collective, the Ocean’s trilogy remains fondly recalled by many as top notch Hollywood escapism and, flaws notwithstanding, an example of confident, classy, big budget, filmmaking. Since its finale in 2007, many pondered whether we would see an Ocean’s Fourteen but a few were caught by surprise by the announcement of not only a lower digit titled spin-off/sequel but one led by an all female cast.

It’s difficult to find an aspect of popular culture that Hugh Hefner didn’t influence during his long, remarkable life. Spanning journalism, television, film, fashion and, of course, sexuality, his impact on music is one of the least heralded aspects of his legacy. Over the course of two seasons, Hefner used his weekly syndicated variety show, Playboy After Dark, as a platform for a broad spectrum of artists.

Here's yet another of those classic "what if" scenarios that movie lovers often talk about. What the heck would the Fast and Furious franchise look like with Justified star Timothy Olyphant playing Dominic Toretto instead of Vin Diesel? I'm shocked that this was even up for discussion, but producer Neil Moritz revealed the piece of trivia on Bill Simmons' podcast (via Uproxx):
“I had been working with Paul Walker on another movie, Skulls, and I gave him the script [for The Fast and the Furious],” Moritz said. “Rob Cohen, who I had made The Rat Pack with, we gave him the script. The two of them liked the idea. And then we had to look for Dom Toretto. The studio said, ‘If you can get Timothy Olyphant to play that role we will greenlight the movie… The luckiest thing that ever happened to us is Tim Olyphant turned us down. He’s a great actor.

If there is a reliable truism that can coexist alongside the American film industry’s dance of death with economically insane budgets that now routinely soar north of $200 million, it is that (most) critics and potential ticket-buyers can be counted on to review bad buzz and publicized woes of dollars and production instead of the actual movie once it finally finds its way to a screen. And it may in fact be true that the drama behind the scenes often outstrips the quality of the wide-screen finished product, though certainly this is not always the case. The reception of big-budget box-office flops like John Carter, The Lone Ranger, Jupiter Ascending and Oliver Stone’s Alexander are but some late examples of our number-crunching obsession with pop culture minutiae and the fascination of a behemoth’s preordained fall. Most who trudged out to see any of these films during their theatrical...

Chicago – Like improvisational jazz, the performance career of Don Cheadle has many moods, directions and shadings. For his latest film, he takes on the titles of co-writer and director, along with the lead role of music legend Miles Davis. This all comes together is the aptly titled “Miles Ahead.”
Cheadle applies a different kind of music biography spin, with a centerpiece story about Davis that operates as a mythical framework for the musician’s life story, told in a loose flashback format. The cinematic structure is jazzy and kinetic, and it moves forward with an energy all of its own, driven by the frenetic soundtrack of the man himself. As a director, Cheadle has crafted something outside the norm, a visual blend that could be at home within the florid sweep of a Miles Davis composition.

The good news is that Timeless Video is releasing multiple films in one DVD package. The bad news is that one of these releases, although featuring two highly-watchable leading men, presents two stinkers. Love and Bullets is a 1979 Charles Bronson starrer that Roger Ebert appropriately described at the time as "an assemblyline potboiler". The film initially showed promise. Originally titled Love and Bullets, Charlie, the movie had John Huston as its director. However, Huston left after "creative differences" about the concept of the story and its execution on screen. The absurdity of losing a director as esteemed as Huston might have been understandable if the resulting flick wasn't such a mess. However, one suspects that, whatever the conceptual vision Huston had for the movie may have been, it must have been superior to what ultimately emerged. Stuart Rosenberg, the competent director of Cool Hand Luke took over...

When most wrestling fans think of New Orleans these days, they think of WrestleMania 30, coming up on April 6 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
What many younger fans may not realize is that New Orleans was one of the hottest cities in the old Mid-South territory back in the early ’80s, with Ted Dibiase, “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan, Junkyard Dog, King Kong Bundy, Jake “The Snake” Roberts, Kamala, Steve “Dr. Death” Williams, and announcer Jim Ross being among the prominent names who left an indelible mark on professional wrestling.
With athletic, bruising matches orchestrated by no-nonsense promoter “Cowboy” Bill Watt, Mid-South garnered national attention for its evocative storytelling and Superdome Extravaganzas, featuring the Road Warriors, the Midnight Express, the Von Erichs, Ric Flair, Dusty Rhodes, and Andre the Giant.
In recent years, WWE purchased the Mid-South Wrestling video library — more than 1,200 hours of TV programming from...
