XXX: The Return of Xander Cage – Did this sequel happen way too late?
Image
The summer of 2002 kicked off a whole new era in spy movies, but not in the way Hollywood expected. You see, three spy movies were coming out that year, and only one of them was predicted to be a hit. They were the Ben Affleck Jack Ryan flick, The Sum of All Fears, his pal Matt Damon’s The Bourne Identity, and Vin Diesel’s XXX. In fact, all three of them made money, but The Bourne Identity, a notoriously delayed and troubled production at the time, became a classic. The movie everyone expected to be a hit, XXX, did fine, making $142 million, which was a tidy sum. Still, given that it was expected to be the biggest hit of the summer, Hollywood insiders considered the film a disappointment. The end of the film promised that Xander Cage would return, but the time XXX: State of the Union hit theaters three years later,...

'Riddick 4' Update "Incoming..." Vin Diesel Teases
Image
Action movie superstar Vin Diesel has teased an imminent, and long-awaited, update regarding his highly anticipated science fiction sequel, Riddick 4. Officially titled Riddick: Furya, the sci-fi action follow-up will explore the mysterious origins of Diesel’s title character, who started life as a mysterious convict way, way back in the 2000 action sci-fi outing Pitch Black. Since then, Riddick has become so much more, with the lore being expanded in a pair of sequels, The Chronicles of Riddick and Riddick, with Diesel hoping (and teasing) that the world of Riddick will become his next major franchise following the conclusion of the Fast and Furious series.

Diesel has now taken to social media to share an image of Riddick showing off his shiny eyeballs, teasing that something is “Incoming...” While that’s all he’s offered for now, with Riddick: Furya having commenced filming back in August last year, it stands...

Vin Diesel Teases News on 'Riddick: Furya' Is "Incoming"
Image
While fans love Vin Diesel for playing Dom Toretto in the Fast and Furious franchise, his other character, Riddick is one they are longing for. The actor knows what fans want and has been teasing steadily the next entry in the franchise, Riddick: Furya. The movie started production last year, and we have seen the behind-the-scenes images already. Now the actor is teasing that some sort of announcement on the way.

The actor took to Instagram and shared an image of himself in character with a simple caption, “Incoming…” Fans are going gaga in his comments section and the hype is real around the project. The film has been in production for some time, so we might be in for a treat as a teaser might be on its way.

What to Expect From ‘Riddick: Furya’?

While the plot details are kept tightly under wraps for Riddick: Furya writer-director David Twohy,...

Top 5 Netflix shows and movies won viewers over even as critics panned some
Image
With Tudum now updated, it’s time to take a closer look at the top five most-viewed movies and shows on Netflix. The two lists have several surprises from last week, showing us what has been popular with viewers. They've clearly not been listening to the critics when they made their choices from the many new additions from Netflix each week.

The movie list includes a couple of films where the 'never mind the critics' element applies. That's a great approach. Watching what you like, not what you're told to like, is a good plan. That is balanced out by two strong family viewing movies that likely had an added attraction over Easter. And for a twist and touch of variety, there’s also a disturbing documentary film in there.

Critics also come into play on the shows. Although in this instance, they may be right, as one new series could struggle.

Forgotten Action-Horror Gem Starring Vin Deasel is Now Yours to Stream for Free
Image
Action-horror is such an interesting subgenre. The Terminator and Aliens (both Cameron) are classics, adeptly balancing the scope of the action with more intimate, terrifying moments, though they’re more outliers than the norm. Often, especially in the 2010s, action-horror hybrids were costly, star-studded vehicles with fantastical presences and incredulous PG-13 ratings. Remember the two different attempts to launch a Dark Universe with Dracula Untold and The Mummy? Yeah. Well, they didn’t have Vin Deasel.

Remember the Nicolas Cage vehicle Season of the Witch from 2011? What about the adaptation of Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant that hurts me to this day? Honestly, I’m not sure it’s ever been profitable enough to dump a bunch of money into an action-horror epic, but studios keep doing it. At least one has defied the odds. You likely don’t remember Breck Eisner’s The Last Witch Hunter, but audiences on Tubi do.

The 15 Worst Movie Sequels Ever
Image
If you think sequels are bad now, you should have seen them a couple decades ago. Today, franchises are so ubiquitous that the studios take time to get them as right as possible, securing the original stars and trying to write stories that equal their predecessors. At the dawn of the blockbuster era, however, sequels were seen as cheap cash cows to be rushed out as quickly as possible while people still remembered the original. Nowadays, we know that nostalgia can overcome most of that and keep some properties around forever.

If you're wondering why your least favorite "Star Wars, "Star Trek," or "Superman" isn't on this list, it's simple: when you have an actor associated with an iconic character who continues to commit to the role, it elevates even "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace." It's hard to hate a movie that has Christopher Reeve in the tights, or Leonard Nimoy in pointy ears,...

XXX: State of the Union – Why Did Vin Diesel Quit This Sequel?
Image
Back in the summer of 2002, everyone thought XXX was going to be the next blockbuster action sensation. Vin Diesel, based on the success of The Fast and the Furious, was a newly minted megastar, and it was set to be the movie that would not only turn him into the next Arnold Schwarzenegger or Sylvester Stallone, but it was also going to make the James Bond series irrelevant. While a box office hit, it wasn’t the worldwide smash Sony’s home studio was expecting. In fact, it made about $200 million less than the next James Bond movie, Die Another Day, which came out the same year. A new spy movie Did come out that year that would fundamentally alter the James Bond series, but it was The Bourne Identity, not XXX. Nevertheless, the movie made enough money to merit a sequel. Plans for a follow-up existed before XXX ever hit theaters,...

Vin Diesel’s Sci-Fi Action Movie 'Babylon A.D.' Is Streaming Free
Image
Action icon Vin Diesel may now be known for the hugely successful Fast and Furious franchise, but there was a time when his name alone was not enough to sell an action picture. Transporting you back to 2008, Diesel led the science fiction action outing Babylon A.D., which sees the actor take on the role of a mercenary and a former Marine who is tasked with escorting a young woman across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. And this largely forgotten action outing is all set to stream for free.

Directed and co-written by Mathieu Kassovitz, and based on the 1999 novel “Babylon Babies” by Maurice Georges Dantec, Babylon A.D. stars Vin Diesel alongside Mélanie Thierry, Michelle Yeoh, Lambert Wilson, Mark Strong, Jérôme Le Banner, Charlotte Rampling, and Gérard Depardieu. The sci-fi action flick is set to hit free streaming platform Tubi on April 1, and you can check out the official synopsis below.

In a post-apocalyptic wasteland,...

Vin Diesel Quietly Reveals First Footage From 'Riddick: Furya'
Image
Action star Vin Diesel has quietly revealed the first footage from his upcoming (and long-awaited) sequel, Riddick 4. Officially titled Riddick: Furya, the sci-fi action follow-up will explore the mysterious origins of Diesel’s title character, who started life as a mysterious intergalactic convict way back in 2000’s Pitch Black. The lore has since greatly expanded, with Riddick: Furya expected to bring back on of Diesel’s best characters for a cinematic epic.

While the footage doesn’t show too much (you can check it out below), it does find Diesel back in the black goggles and sporting the kind of look of repressed rage that the character is known for. Set to be written and directed once again by David Twohy alongside creators Jim and Ken Wheat, the sci-fi action sequel not only finds Diesel as the lead but also as a producer on the project. As well as this brief glimpse,...

How Star Trek creators could gain new audiences by embracing horror/thriller themed stories
Image
Audiences have been wildly fascinated with the horror/thriller genre in sci-fi settings since director Ridley Scott's groundbreaking Alien (1979), starring Sigourney Weaver. 7 years later, Weaver earned her first Oscar nomination for the sequel Aliens (1986) for Best Actress, further legitimizing the horror/thriller genre in sci-fi themed storytelling in space.

Today, with total box office receipts of over $800M in 2024, this genre could be a way for Star Trek creators to attract new horror fans seeking novel ways to be frightened! We love to be scared out of our seats, and Hollywood has fueled our fascination with feeding our fears for decades. Star Trek has in the past dabbled in this horror/thriller genre with varying degrees of success; however, a consideration for new stories in this genre is surely worth expanding.

As a superfan of Star Trek and the sci-fi genre with a mash-up of horror - I was...

XXX: Vin Diesel’s 007-clone wasn’t the threat to the franchise everyone thought
Image
In the summer of 2001, Vin Diesel became a household name. The Fast and the Furious, which was designed as little more than a modestly budgeted action programmer, became the breakout hit of that summer, capturing the cultural zeitgeist in a way that’s hard to reverse engineer. It was a major hit with the youth market. Diesel, with his bald head, muscular physique and unforgettable voice became the decade’s first icon, with audiences fascinated by his macho vibe, ambiguous ethnicity, and signature look. Studios didn’t waste any time building a star vehicle around him, with Sony making him the lead of a new super spy franchise they hoped would give James Bond some serious competition. The film, XXX, was among the most hyped films of the decade, with many thinking it would be such a phenomenon that it would make the Bond franchise irrelevant. That didn’t quite happen,...

Vin Diesel Knew His Early Chances For ‘Pitch Black’ Were Riddick-ulously Low
Pitch Black (2000)
Image Source: Universal Pictures Home Entertainment Released 25 years ago, the movie Pitch Black that first introduced audiences to Richard B. Riddick, who has since been featured in two sequels — The Chronicles of Riddick and Riddick — and will be seen once again in Riddick: Furya, which started filming last summer. Aside from the Fast & Furious franchise, it’s the live-action role Vin Diesel has played the most, and it’s also one of the roles that’s been the most meaningful to him. When he was cast in Pitch Black, he wasn’t yet a Hollywood superstar; at the time the film was released, he told us he understood he probably wasn’t anybody’s first choice for the film, so he had to fight hard for it. Vin Diesel’s Sci-Fi Action Movie 'Pitch Black' Is Now Streaming on Prime Video
Image
The divisive sci-fi movie that made Vin Diesel an action hero has now found a new streaming home. Released back in 2000, Pitch Black features a star-making turn from Diesel, and launched the now fan-favorite Riddick franchise, introducing Diesel as the mysterious Richard B. Riddick, a former soldier-turned-mercenary-turned-criminal who finds himself crash landing on an alien planet inhabited by monsters who thrive in the dark. Oh, and an eclipse is coming.

Directed by David Twohy and co-written by Twohy and brothers Ken and Jim Wheat, Pitch Black features Radha Mitchell, Cole Hauser, Claudia Black, and Keith David as some of the other crew members who come to rely on Diesel’s untrustworthy antihero to get them off the planet alive. Which he may just be able to do thanks to his “shine jobbed” eyes, which enable him to see in the dark. Pitch Black is now available to stream on Prime Video in the U.

Taking Poor ‘Carrie’ To Prom in De Palma’s 1976 Classic [Horror Queers Podcast]
Sophia Takal in Gabi on the Roof in July (2010)
Everything’s Coming Up Carrie!

January proved to be a busy, varied month on Horror Queers. We kicked off 2025 with a look at Sophia Takal’s examination of toxic friendships in Into the Dark: “New Year, New You” (listen), tackled Quentin Tarantino’s half of the Grindhouse double feature with Death Proof (listen), revisited George Waggner’s 1941 classic The Wolf Man (listen), then begged for Aylmer’s juice in Frank Henenlotter’s Brain Damage (listen).

To wrap up January, we’re taking Carrie White to prom in Brian De Palma‘s adaptation of Stephen King‘s debut novel, Carrie. The classic film about telekinesis follows timid, bullied Carrie (Sissy Spacek) struggling to fit in at high school and get out from under the thumb of her overbearing religious mother (Piper Laurie).

Unexpected kindness arrives courtesy of popular girl Sue Snell (Amy Irving), who volunteers her boyfriend Tommy (William Katt) to take Carrie to prom.

Why Steven Spielberg Is Disappointed With Vin Diesel
Image
Vin Diesel was bitten by the acting bug very early in his life, having acted in a New York stage production of "Dinosaur Door" at the age of seven. The way Diesel came to be involved in "Dinosaur Door" was kismet. It seems that he and a few buddies had broken into the theater to vandalize it, but were caught by the theater manager. Rather than calling the police, Diesel and friends were offered parts in the play, which they accepted. Diesel ended up studying writing and filmmaking in college.

Diesel made his motion picture debut in 1990, playing an unnamed orderly in the Robin Williams/Robert De Niro drama "Awakenings." He was 23. Also a burgeoning filmmaker, Diesel also wrote and directed the short film "Multi-Facial" in 1995, a film about his own multiracial background. In 1997, Diesel wrote, directed, and starred in the character-based crime movie "Strays," a film that played at the Sundance Film Festival.

This Underrated, Almost Forgotten Vin Diesel Sci-Fi Creature Feature Proves the Importance of Good World Building
Image
There are few movie stars as synonymous with 2000s action cinema as Vin Diesel. While his tenure as Dominic Toretto will soon come to a doubtlessly glorious close in the eleventh and (supposedly) final installment of the Fast and Furious franchise, the world would be remiss to forget his pre-Fast turn in the Riddick films. Pitch Black, the first of three to feature the character, gave Diesel and writer/director David Twohy a gritty and dusty sandbox to play in.

Vin Diesel “Hit vs Flop” Ratio: Has Dominic Toretto Tasted Any Box-Office Success Except Fast and Furious Franchise?

The face of fast cars, thrilling chases, and best family speeches that hit home, Vin Diesel has it all. Largely in thanks to Fast & Furious, Diesel became synonymous to action-packed cinema, “ride or die” philosophy, and heart-racing stunts. Vin Diesel Reveals New Image from ‘Riddick: Furya’ and It Looks Amazing!

If you actually give it some thought, The Chronicles of Riddick is a truly fascinating science fiction series. The Chronicles of Riddick trilogy has a strong fan base and undoubtedly helped its main actor, Vin Diesel, establish himself as a proper action star. However, it never became a mainstream hit, although it has, throughout the years, become a cult classic.

The stories of the 28th-century antihero Riddick are at the heart of the series, which was developed by brothers Ken and Jim Wheat. Three full-length films and one animated short have been released since the series debut in 2000, and while many thought that the franchise was over, we are soon going to return to the world of Riddick.

As you probably remember, we have recently reported on the production of Riddick: Furya, the upcoming fourth live-action movie in the franchise, having received some new information and images. In this report,...

10 Movie Franchises That Ended With the Worst Possible Film
Image
Hollywood has made sequels a core part of the success of key movie franchises since the film industry's beginning, with movies like Jaws, Star Wars, and Die Hard earning numerous continuations. Movie series go through rough spots, with genres like horror particularly experiencing incredibly weak entries, despite continuing on years after. Some franchises have the unfortunate distinction of ending on their worst entry, whether a planned trilogy that disappointed audiences with their finale or films so bad they tanked a series' future.

Seeing a franchise end on its weakest entry isn't always unexpected, and audiences have unfortunately been trained to lower expectations for the average sequel. These films can lose the respect of audiences for a variety of reasons, from losing their main cast and abandoning a core premise to bad direction and simply failing to deliver a satisfying ending to a saga. While no franchise is ever truly dead,...

And, yet, that's not the character from his filmography that he holds closest to his heart. It's actually Richard B. Riddick, the scene-stealing role in 2000's Pitch Black, which was released one year before the first Fast and the Furious movie had even sped onto the big screen.

After catching Stephen Spielberg's attention with 1997's Strays, Diesel got his first big-budget movie role in Saving Private Ryan. Then, he voiced the title character in The Iron Giant and co-starred with Giovanni Ribisi in Boiler Room. But Pitch Black, which still had Diesel as a supporting actor, allowed him to dive into a truly unique, layered character and make him his own.

Yellowstone Star Cole Hauser's Forgotten 2004 Thriller Made Him The Lead Over Matthew McConaughey & Mel Gibson
Image
A forgotten revenge thriller from 2004 made Yellowstone's Cole Hauser the lead over co-stars like Matthew McConaughey and Chris Rock. Cole Hauser's movie CV is a long and storied one, with the star having first made an impression in the likes of Dazed and Confused and Good Will Hunting. It was the shock success of 2000's Pitch Black that was his real breakout, alongside co-star Vin Diesel. Hauser has rarely stopped working since, but his most famous role is easilyYellowstone's Rip Wheeler.

Rip is the eternally loyal right-hand man of John Dutton (Kevin Costner) in the modern Western saga and is willing to go to any lengths to protect his adopted family. With Costner's highly publicized exit from the Taylor Sheridan series, it appears Hauser will become even more important to Yellowstone's future moving forward too. Hauser still works on the occasional film project too, including 2022's The Minute You Wake Up Dead...

Vin Diesel Teases an 'Expanding' Riddick Universe
Image
What does action movie star Vin Diesel have planned for the world of The Chronicles of Riddick? With his other major franchise, The Fast and Furious, reportedly set to end with the upcoming 11th outing, Diesel has now teased big plans for the future of the Riddick franchise, taking to social media to share an image of himself as Richard B. Riddick alongside the caption...

The Riddick universe is expanding so cool. Inspired.

Now, its not entirely clear what Diesel is referring to here, but with modern blockbuster moviemaking now dominated by sequels, prequels, and shared universes, it is certainly possible (even likely) that the Fast and Furious lead is planning to expand the world of Riddick with further installments and spin-off projects. After all, as fans of Riddick will know, there is plenty of lore still to be mined in the name of a "Riddick Cinematic Universe."

Dominic Toretto's Superhero Powers Totally Changed How I See This Other Vin Diesel Character
Image
Now that Vin Diesel has pretty much turned Fast & Furious Dominic Toretto into a full-blown superhero, Im less excited about his true sci-fi hero, Riddick. Diesel is currently hard at work on a fourth Riddick movie, Riddick: Furya, which has been in various stages of development for over a decade now. David Twohy, the writer-director behind the first three films, has once again penned the script and will once again direct the project. Theres no confirmed release date for Riddick: Furya, but Diesel has teased that itll explore Riddicks origin story.

Ive always thought it was really cool that Diesel leveraged Universals desire to have him make a cameo appearance in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift to score the rights to the Riddick character. This has meant that Diesel has complete ownership of the Riddick franchise and, as a result, complete creative control of his big-screen outings.

Vin Diesel shares behind-the-scenes images as Riddick: Furya heads into production
Image
Although eleven years have passed since the release of the third film in the Riddick franchise, star Vin Diesel has always kept hope alive that he would someday be re-teaming with franchise mastermind David Twohy on another Riddick adventure. Back in May, we learned that Riddick: Furya was scheduled to start filming on August 26th – and during the build-up to the start of production, Diesel has been sharing behind-the-scenes images and video on social media that show him getting back into character as Riddick. You can check them out at the bottom of this article.

Riddick: Furya will be a continuation of the sci-fi action franchise that began with the creature feature Pitch Black back in 2000. That was followed by the epic The Chronicles of Riddick, which underperformed at the box office in 2004, so they reduced the scope for the third film, Riddick, which was released in 2013. The franchise also...

'The Chronicles of Riddick' Isn't a Bad Sci-Fi Action Film It's Brilliant Camp
Image
Vin Diesel may have had one of the strangest career trajectories out of the most significant action stars working today. Diesel was never anyones idea of a leading man, but he managed to succeed with smaller roles in films like Saving Private Ryan and Boiler Room, indicating that he may have some room to grow. Although it would be The Fast and the Furious that would turn Diesel from being a character actor to an all-out action star in his own right, he managed to kick-start another franchise when he appeared as the outer space criminal Richard B. Riddick in the surprise 2000 hit science fiction horror thriller Pitch Black. Although Pitch Black was a moderately successful cult hit that filled the space horror void that had been left vacant by the original Alien, its sequel, The Chronicles of Riddick, is an absurdly ambitious space opera that verges on being completely campy.

“Which is boring and subpar writing compared to previous episodes”: Even Yellowstone Fans Will Agree Taylor Sheridan ‘Lost His Edge’ With a Fan-Favorite Character and There’s Only One Remedy
Image
Cole Hauser, a hidden gem in Hollywood’s treasure chest, may have flown under the radar for a good decade, but has anyone really taken the time to appraise the facets of his career? From his breakout role in 1992’s School Ties to his magnetic draw in Yellowstone, it’s evident this actor carries a Midas touch, albeit one that’s been somewhat veiled from the A-list spotlight.

His acting journey continued through the ebbs and flows of Hollywood, where he plunged into the depths of genre classics like Pitch Black and took the wheel in action-packed 2 Fast 2 Furious. Despite a stint in the movies, Hauser has firmly established himself as the fan-favorite ranch foreman Rip Wheeler in Taylor Sheridan’s acclaimed Western TV show.

All The Riddick Movies In Chronological Order
Image
The Riddick movies may not have been critically acclaimed, but they gained a loyal fanbase and became cult classics in their own right. Each Riddick movie has its own strengths and builds a compelling world within the story's universe. While the Riddick movies can be enjoyed as standalone adventures, they are best experienced in the order in which they were released.

The Riddick movie franchise was a major stepping stone in Vin Diesel's career, but without consistency in the titling of the three installments, their viewing order is not immediately clear. Starting in the year 2000 with the sci-fi/horror film Pitch Black, the series quickly found its star in the form of its antihero, Richard Riddick (Diesel), and the franchise continued with additional movies. Though the Riddick movies have received mixed critical reactions, the series gained a loyal fanbase and its films became cult classics in their own right.

Riddick: Furya - Cast, Story & Everything We Know

Quick Links The Latest Riddick: Furya News Riddick: Furya is Confirmed Riddick: Furya Cast Riddick: Furya Story Details Riddick 4: Furya - Further News & Info

Riddick: Furya is officially happening, with development on the long awaited Vin Diesel sci-fi sequel well underway. The first three movies in the Riddick franchise, Pitch Black (2000), The Chronicles of Riddick (2004), and Riddick (2013), have accumulated a cult following. Riddick was introduced as a lethal criminal en route an off-world prison in Pitch Black. When the transport crash lands on a monster-infested planet, Riddick uses his unique abilities to survive until daylight.

The Riddick franchise remains one of Vin Diesel's most celebrated properties, thanks in part to his partnership with writer and directer David Twohy across the entire trilogy. Both are returning for Riddick: Furya, and the details revealed by the pair so far hint that the wait will have been...

Vin Diesel starts the engine of Fast X: Part 2 with a BTS video from the high-octane sequel
Image
Vin Diesel is eager to get back behind the wheel for Fast X: Part 2, and to mark the occasion, he’s sharing a new video on social media that gives Fast fans a peek behind the curtain at the latest film in the franchise. Instead of teasing a new cast member, Diesel’s video previews an intriguing “setting” for the high-octane action film to take place. The location looks like something between Mad Max, Blade Runner, and Pitch Black, with dust billowing around a desolate terrain. The muted orange landscape includes a curious-looking structure with neon pink lighting. It’s a bizarre backdrop for a Fast & Furious film. Color me confused. Are the Fast family finally going to space? Like, more so than they did in F9: The Fast Saga.

Long before Vin Diesel shot to international stardom with the Fast & Furious franchise in 2001, the actor got a bizarre but memorable recruitment call from Steven Spielberg. Following his prolific work in the 1995 short drama Multi-Facial, and the 1997 feature film Strays, the actor surprisingly came under the radar of Hollywood’s most acclaimed filmmaker in 1998.

According to Vin Diesel’s interview with Yahoo Movies, the actor recalled how he was notified by his agent about his role in Steven Spielberg’s 1998 war film Saving Private Ryan.
