Early next year, Universal and Blumhouse will continue their reanimation of the Universal Monsters with the release of director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man. Whannell, who also directed Insidious 3 and Upgrade for Blumhouse, was the man responsible for bringing The Invisible Man back to life in 2020. He did so with a modern twist on the character that turned out to be more than just a moderate success. The Invisible Man raked in $144 million on a $7 million budget, receiving mostly positive reviews.
With horror doing better than ever at the box office and Whannell arguably without a miss on his directing resume, hopes are high for Wolf Man, howling into theaters on January 17, 2025.
But this isn’t the first time a modern Wolf Man project sounded good on paper…

Chris Cooper is an Oscar-winning actor who has brought his laconic, folksy presence to dozens of movies, many of which have become modern classics. Let’s take a look back at 17 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1951 in Kansas City, Missouri, Cooper cut his teeth in theater before making his film debut at the age of 36 with a lead role in John Sayles‘ “Matewan” (1987). The movie kicked off a decades long collaboration between the actor and director, with the two pairing up for such titles as “City of Hope” (1991), “Lone Star” (1996), “Silver City” (2004) and “Amigo” (2010).
He hit the Oscar jackpot with his supporting turn in Spike Jonze‘s “Adaptation” (2002), a self-reflective comedy about screenwriter Charlie Kaufman‘s (Nicolas Cage) struggles to adapt Susan Orlean‘s (Meryl Streep) nonfiction book “The Orchid Thief.” Cooper played John Laroche, the eccentric, swampy horticulturalist at the center of Orlean’s story.

When it was released in January of 2001, Richard Kelly's bleak time-travel psychological drama "Donnie Darko" caused a notable stir. The title character, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, is a teen struggling with schizophrenia in 1988, a time when Reagan's great Conservative revolution was drawing to a close and adults clung to suburban conformity as it crumbled under them. Donnie is obsessed with time-travel and regularly hallucinates a vicious, strange anthropomorphic rabbit monster named Frank (all while attempting to socialize at school and foster a romance with a classmate played by Jena Malone). Patrick Swayze appears as a cheesy self-self guru, Drew Barrymore plays one of Donnie's teachers, and Maggie Gyllenhaal plays Donnie's sister.
By turns psychedelic and weirdly moving (in a Goth sort of way), "Donnie Darko" quickly became a cult hit and rotated directly into the local midnight movie circuit, attracting a wide swath of misfits and night people.

Jake Gyllenhaal is arguably one of the bravest actors of his generation, venturing into different genres and attempting risky projects throughout his career. As a child actor, he gained prominence in the role of Homer Hickam in 1999’s October Sky. The young actor would go on to star in one of the most influential films of the 2000s Donnie Darko.
Jake Gyllenhaal as Homer Hickam in 1999’s October Sky
The complex psychological thriller was directed by Richard Kelly with Gyllenhaal playing the titular role. Most people were blown away by the film’s ambition and were left thinking about the complicated narrative and the ambiguous nature of its ending. Gyllenhaal considers this the biggest achievement of the film which has led to its resonance to this day.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Flamin’ Hot, the script from Lewis Colick and Gentefied creator Linda Yvette Chávez that became Eva Longoria’s feature directorial debut.
The rags-to-riches story of Richard Montañez, the Frito-Lay janitor (played by Jesse Garcia) who becomes the marketing godfather of the spicy-chip revolution, hit the spot right away with audiences. The pic from Searchlight Pictures won the Headliners section’s audience award after its world premiere at SXSW, after which it became the first film to debut simultaneously on Hulu and Disney+ when it premiered in June.
Longoria told Deadline earlier this year that after sparking to the original script by Colick (October Sky and Charlie St. Cloud) and coming aboard, her first suggestion was that the story’s point of view needed to be Montañez’s.
“This is his version of what happened,” she said.

She's the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs. She can outrun Imperial starships. She's fast. She is the Millennium Falcon, and while she may not look like much, she's got it where it counts. As for why she looks like, per Luke Skywalker, "a piece of junk," that's a surprisingly convoluted story born out of Joe Johnston's literal kitchen sink.
It's also a reminder of why George Lucas' "Star Wars" became a zeitgeist-capturing blockbuster the likes of which hadn't been seen since "Gone with the Wind." Lucas combined his love of Westerns, Akira Kurosawa's samurai films, and hot rods to make a sci-fi fantasy with a lived-in aesthetic. He wasn't trying to blow audiences away with sleek, futuristic design work. He wanted his space opera to feel like a world ravaged by conflict. This meant his spacecraft had to look beaten to crap.

Hollywood star Jake Gyllenhaal is determined to star in another Broadway musical. “There are so many musicals I love so deeply,” Gyllenhaal, who starred in a revival of “Sunday in the Park With George” with Annaleigh Ashford in 2017, told Variety at the Los Angeles premiere of his new action drama “The Covenant” on Monday evening, reports ‘Variety’.
“At some point, I’ve always loved ‘Fiddler on the Roof.’ I’d love to do that.”
Gyllenhaal’s godmother, Jamie Lee Curtis, was at ‘The Covenant’ premiere and recalled how the actor was supposed to star as Tevye in a school production of ‘Fiddler’ when he was a high school senior.
He left the show when he was offered the lead in the 1999 drama ‘October Sky’.
“I knew then how committed he was to being an actor because most people wouldn’t give up that high school slot for a little indie movie.

Robert Dalva, the film editor who earned an Oscar nomination for his work on the touching family adventure The Black Stallion and collaborated with director Joe Johnston on five films, including Jumanji and Captain America: The First Avenger, has died. He was 80.
Dalva died Jan. 27 of lymphoma in Marin County, California, his son Matthew Dalva told The Hollywood Reporter.
Dalva attended USC film school in the same class with George Lucas, and he went to work with him and Francis Ford Coppola in 1969 as the pair launched their innovative American Zoetrope production company in San Francisco.
The relationship paid off when Lucas hired Dalva to handle second-unit photography — he shot the land speeder going across the desert — on the original Star Wars (1977).

Richard Kelly, who was only 25 while directing his genre-hybrid, deliciously ominous "Donnie Darko," had been inspired to pen the screenplay after hearing a news report while growing up in Richmond, Virginia. Per this news report, a chunk of ice had fallen off a plane and crashed into a boy's bedroom. This image haunted Kelly for years, as the incident could symbolize myriad things for the boy who had evaded near death, including questions about the meaning of existence and the concept of deus ex machina. These speculations took shape in the story of Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal), a troubled boy who narrowly evades death, and goes on to unlock the powers of time travel to prevent the collapse of the primary universe. While being mired in teenage angst and existential dread, Donnie is plagued by visions of a man in a rabbit suit, who plays a seminal role in Donnie's heartbreaking journey.

Donnie Darko is your typical moody teenage boy. He also happens to frequently converse with a giant bunny rabbit named Frank (James Duval) and thinks the world is going to end in approximately 28 days — just read his forearm! He is also pretty sure that time travel is real, and that the crazy old lady who the neighborhood kids have nicknamed "Grandma Death" (Patience Cleveland) somehow holds the key to understanding all of this.
As the main character of Richard Kelly's 2001 film "Donnie Darko," Donnie's psyche is on full display as viewers watch him struggle to understand his true purpose in life after a gigantic jet engine falls off a plane and smashes into his room one night while he's out sleepwalking. When it was first released, the movie bombed at the box office — it only made a little over 500,000 against a 4 million budget (ouch) — but it has gone on...

How can Amazon Prime Video followup the first season finale of its biggest series ever in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power? The answer lies in its list of new releases for November 2022.
Understandably, Prime Video is probably pretty tired and won’t be opting for any more Middle-earth spectacle for awhile. In its place, however, are a couple of still intriguing Amazon Original series. British Western drama series The English is set to arrive on Nov. 11 to both Prime Video and BBC Two. Emily Blunt stars as a woman who heads to the American West in 1890 looking for revenge on the man she sees as responsible for the death of her son. Cool! Speaking of the English, the James Corden-starring Mammals also premieres on Nov. 11.

Having premiered at Sundance back in 2001, it was released to theatres via a small company called Newmarket Films, and given that it opened in the wake of 9/11, it came and went with nary a trace. In fact, the company came close to sending it direct-to-video, but in the end, Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas, who had made Memento for the company, pushed them to give it a release. While it barely made any money in theaters, something interesting happened once it hit VHS/DVD – it started to sell – a lot. People would rent the movie, lured in by the intriguing cover art and the presence of Drew Barrymore and Jake Gyllenhaal (then best known for October Sky and Bubble Boy), and watch it over and over. Indeed, word began to spread through college campuses and online about this weird sci-fi flick set in the 80s,...

Done Dirt Cheap: Charaf Chafes at Exploited Migrants in Scanty Drama
For his sophomore film, Dirty Difficult Dangerous, Lebanese/French director Wissam Charaf presents an indictment against the demeaned reality of migrant workers in the changing landscape of Beirut. Named for the wage related neologism (sometimes called the 3Ds) encompassing the reality of labor performed by migrant workers, Charaf foregoes the comedic element which graced his 2016 debut Tombe du Ciel for an allegorically tinged love story between an Ethiopian maid and a Syrian refugee whose body is transforming into something inorganic.…...

Movie fans will undoubtedly remember director Joe Johnston's most cherished efforts, like "The Rocketeer," "October Sky" (starring a baby-faced Jake Gyllenhaal), or the delightfully retro "Captain America: The First Avenger" But one particular movie from his filmography remains somewhat buried, releasing soon after "October Sky" but before the Viggo Mortensen-starring "Hidalgo." Not only that, but this movie maintains a certain redheaded stepchild energy within the larger franchise that it's a part of. That movie, naturally, is "Jurassic Park III." No sequel to Steven...

Lady Gaga is a big “Donnie Darko” fan, and she made sure to let Jake Gyllenhaal know when the two sat down to interview each other as part of Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series, presented by Amazon Studios. Gaga named “Donnie Darko” as a movie that inspired her when she was growing up.
“I don’t want to lie and tell you I haven’t seen it so many times,” Gaga told Gyllenhaal. “In the world of music, but in fashion as well, ‘Donnie Darko,’ it’s religion. It really is. And if you know your shit, you know ‘Donnie Darko.'”
“Donnie Darko” stars Gyllenhaal as a troubled teenager who has visions of a rabbit that tells him the world is going to end in just 28 days. The film, directed by Richard Kelly, was a box office bomb at the time of its 2001 release, but went on to become an enduring cult classic.

Update: PepsiCo has issued a new statement defending Richard Montañez, in which it says the Flamin’ Hot Cheetos controversy has caused “strain” in its relationship with the Latino community. The company also claims its previous statements have been “misconstrued.”
The screenwriter of an upcoming film about Flamin’ Hot Cheetos defended the project on Tuesday, after the Los Angeles Times report challenged Montañez’s claim to have invented the snack product.
Lewis Colick argued that Montañez, the hero of “Flamin’ Hot,” still has an inspiring story to tell of rising through the corporate ranks at Frito-Lay.
“I think enough of the story is true,” Colick said. “The heart and soul and spirit of the story is true. He is a guy who should remain the face of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.”

Eva Longoria’s prestige project “Flamin’ Hot,” about the inventor of the spicy Cheetos snack, has found its stars in actors Jesse Garcia and Annie Gonzalez.
An award-winning actor and prolific TV director, Longoria is ramping up to a feature directorial era with the Searchlight project, which tells the inspirational story of Richard Montañez. A janitor at Frito Lay, Montañez took inspiration from his Mexican American heritage to create the wildly popular snack Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.
Garcia will play Montañez and Gonzalez will portray his wife Judy. Additionally, Linda Yvette Chavez has taken a pass on the script from writer Lewis Colick (“October Sky”). Chavez is the acclaimed creator of the Netflix original series “Gentefied,” and also adapted the upcoming directorial debut from America Ferrera, the Netflix original “I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter.”
Longoria said it has been “my biggest priority to make sure we are telling Richard Montañez’s story authentically.

The Hindi-language film industry, popularly known as Bollywood, is displaying its resilience after being hit by yet another Covid-enforced pause.
India is currently in the throes of the pandemic with 330,000 new Covid-19 cases everyday, with upward of 2,200 daily deaths. The western Indian state of Maharashtra, home to Mumbai and Bollywood, is amongst the worst hit with more than 67,000 new daily cases and 568 deaths. Of these, Mumbai accounts for some 7,410 cases and 75 deaths. The state is operating under severe movement restrictions, a lockdown in all but name, and Bollywood productions have paused.
Though the intensity of the pandemic is higher during this wave, compared to last year, there is one major difference – the industry has been through a year of hardship and is now better equipped to deal with the crisis, once the Maharashtra government lifts restrictions.
The restrictions are currently due to be lifted on May 1, unless the pandemic takes a turn for the worse.

There are a lot of popular streaming platforms to choose from, but Hulu has always stood alongside Netflix as one of the two essentials for households looking for diversity in content. In the past, they’ve been known for focusing more heavily on newer television content, while Netflix has always offered a larger selection of sought-after films. But now, it looks like Hulu’s June lineup is only going to continue the service’s recent trend of providing high quality movies to bring itself in line with their competitor.

June 2020 is set to be a big month for the whole streaming Disney family. Not only will ESPN+ have the entirety of The Last Dance on its servers for late-adopting sports fans to catch up with, but Disney+ will be premiering its long-awaited Artemis Fowl film. Over on its biggest streaming service in Hulu, however, Disney is taking things a bit more slowly.
This month finds only three major original releases for Hulu. Animated medieval comedy Crossing Swords premieres on June 12, then Ya love story Love Victor and cooking show Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi both arrive on June 19. All in all, that’s not a bad haul for originals for the typically slow summer months.
June 1 sees a pretty impressive crop of movies coming to Hulu’s library as well. October Sky, The X-Files (1998), and Casino will all be ready to stream at the beginning of the month.

Variety first reported in February, 2018, that Searchlight and DeVon Franklin were set to produce the film “Flamin’ Hot,” which will tell the true story of Richard Montanez, who rose from humble beginnings to being a wildly successful businessman when he created a food phenomenon — Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.
The film will follow Montanez, the son of an immigrant, who grew up as a migrant farm worker picking grapes in the fields of Southern California before becoming a janitor at Frito-Lay. While working at the company, Montanez came up with the idea to create Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, transforming the Frito-Lay brand into a pop culture phenomenon and creating a wildly popular category of crunchy snacks.

Chris Cooper celebrates his 68th birthday on July 9, 2019. The Oscar-winning actor has leant his laconic, folksy presence to dozens of movies, many of which have become modern classics. In honor of his birthday, let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.

Joe Johnston has signed on as co-director of The Nutcracker and the Four Realms alongside Lasse Hallström. Disney’s live-action adaptation of the E.T.A. Hoffmann’s 1816 holiday classic is set to hit domestic theaters November 2.
“I watched an early cut of The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, and I saw something unique and fresh,” Johnston said in a statement. “When I was asked to direct the remaining elements, I saw an opportunity to complete Lasse’s wonderful and wildly inventive vision. I know we’ll both be proud of the end result.”
Deadline hears that Hallström asked Johnston to take the gig, and he accepted.
“It was an absolute blessing to have Joe Johnston step in when it became clear that I wouldn’t be available for reshoots,” added Hallström. “Joe is the ultimate expert in visual effects, and I enjoyed collaborating with him on this film.”

Laura Dern returns to HBO this weekend with her film “The Tale,” a big hit in early 2018 at the Sundance Film Festival where the premium network purchased it. Dern’s last collaboration with HBO proved quite successful for both of them. “Big Little Lies” was a major winner during at the 2017 Emmy Awards (her first trophy) and 2018 Golden Globes.
Dern began her career as a teenager more than 30 years ago. Dern seemed to initially aspire to a more normal life but her attempts to finish her college degree at the University of Southern California were continually interrupted by obtaining plum film roles. That she’d eventually settled into an acting career isn’t surprising since her father Bruce Dern is a two time Oscar nominee and her mother Diane Ladd a three time nominee.

If you love Flamin' Hot Cheetos with a passion, here's a movie you might be interested in. Fox Searchlight is producing a film called Flamin' Hot, with will tell the story of Richard Montanez, the man who rose from humble beginnings to a successful businessman when he created Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. Until today, I knew nothing about this guy or the history of how Famin' Hot Cheetos came to be.
The story for the film follows Montanez, "the son of an immigrant, who grew up as a migrant farm worker picking grapes in the fields of Southern California before becoming a janitor at Frito-Lay. It was while working at the company that Montanez came up with the idea to create Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, transforming the Frito-Lay brand into a pop culture phenomenon and disrupting the entire food industry in the process. Director Joe Johnston recently attended Comic Con Paris to talk about his upcoming film, The Silver Chair, which is an adaptation of C.S. Lewis' fourth book in the Chronicles of Narnia series.
It was there that the filmmaker announced that this will be his final film that he will retire when it's complete. For the most part, I'm a big fan of the films that Johnston has made in his career and it's kind of sad that he won't make any more movies after he makes The Silver Chair.
Some of Johnston's most well-known films include Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, The Rocketeer, Jumanji, Jurassic Park III, The Wolfman, and Captain America: The First Avenger. In my opinion, the best film he made in his career, though, was a little movie called October Sky, which stars a young Jake Gyllenhaal. That's actually one of my favorite movies of all time.
