Prank calls are like a right of passage for children of the 80s and 90s. The ritual of hanging out at a friend’s house on a Saturday night when you’re a kid usually included at least one or two calls to unsuspecting households with immature and entertaining interactions. Harmless enough? Well… Mostly. What if the person you prank called turned out to be a sadistic serial killer with limited patience for practical jokes, and even less patience for unruly young people who waste his time and give him the dreaded… blue balls. Movies can be much more than a two-hour, action-packed break from reality. From the importance of strategic thinking and skill to determination and experience, these movies are as educating as they are entertaining. Martin Landau is the Oscar-winning thespian who enjoyed one of the greatest late career renaissances in cinema history, hitting his stride in his 60’s and remaining active until his death in 2017. Let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1928 in Brooklyn, New York, Landau first came to the attention of movie audiences with a villainous role in Alfred Hitchcock‘s “North by Northwest” (1959). He became a television star playing Rollin Hand on “Mission: Impossible,” for which he received three consecutive Emmy nominations as Best Drama Actor (1967-1968) and a Golden Globe victory in 1968.
After decades of bit roles in B-movies and guest spots on TV (including playing a bad guy on “Columbo”), Landau enjoyed a major career comeback thanks to Francis Ford Coppola‘s “Tucker: The Man and His Dream” (1988), for which he won the Golden Globe and earned his first...

Screenwriter, filmmaker, and podcaster Brian Koppelman is a very open guy, and on his The Moment With Brian Koppelman podcast, he does AMAs (ask me anything), where he answers mailbag questions. But, for a while there, the writer/director/showrunner used to add something to the effect of, just don’t ask me questions about “Rounders 2.”

Hollywood’s depiction of the gambling world is typically polarizing, showing either the glittering Las Vegas casinos or the squalor of a gambler who has lost it all.
A significant gain might be a high point, while threats from loan sharks can be low. Films in this genre typically feature high levels of tension, excitement, and, at times, hopelessness.
However, some filmmakers can see the humor in this way of life, and their films on poker and other gambling-related activities will have you grinning and eager to try your hand at it on your next visit to Texas.
For those looking to play poker, Texas Holdem is your best bet. You can also play at the best real money Texas hold’em online casinos and stand a chance to get good rewards.
Let’s look at the five greatest poker movies to watch at home.

Famke Janssen, who played Bond girl Xenia Onatopp in 1995’s GoldenEye, has opened up about the negative effects the role has played as far as her place in the media.
“The Bond movie dictated a lot of my relationship with the press…after GoldenEye I felt like I was thrown to the wolves,” Famke Janssen told The Independent. “It was just an onslaught of attention, good and bad and everything in between. I realize every actor in the world thinks they can control the press, but ultimately the press always wins. I decided I’d rather be less famous and do things on my terms…Fame comes at a price, and it wasn’t one that I was willing to pay.”

There is something about casino movies that just captures our attention. Maybe it is the glitz and glamour of the Las Vegas strip, or the suspense and excitement of watching someone risk it all on a single hand of blackjack. Maybe it is the appeal that Macau has for Asian gamblers who wish to experience some of the best and most authentic casino experiences possible.
Whatever the reason, casino movies have been a staple of cinema for decades and this does not appear to be changing anytime soon, even if things are a little different nowadays given the advent of the internet and the continued development of technology. For instance, those who live in Pa are able to access the very best Pennsylvania online casinos around if they are unable to get to a traditional establishment or wish to choose from a variety of different games where they are able...

Screenwriters, directors, showrunners, and filmmakers Brian Koppelman and David Levien like to look at the world around them for inspiration. For their Showtime series, “Billions,” they looked at the cutthroat world of finance, hedge fund managers, and the real-life prosecutions of financial crime by federal authorities that have made major headlines worldwide. Before that, they famously looked at the world of poker and gambling for “Rounders,” the film that launched their career and made them go-to writers for people like Steven Soderbergh, John Dahl.

The gambling industry and TV and movies have always worked well together, from action-packed franchises to comedies like The Hangover.
They also have a positive impact on each other; casino stories of mobsters make hit movies, and those hit movies see an influx of new players. As the saying goes, it is life imitating art, imitating life.
Movies depicting casinos and gambling on TV shows aren’t just glamorous. They span across a range of different genres. Some are high-octane movies like James Bond, while others depict the highs and lows of casinos like The Gambler.
You can compare sports movies to casino movies. Some almost feel like warning stories about what can go wrong, like the film Green Street Hooligans, and the positive but often difficult such as The Blindside.
While it is certainly likely that when you see people win millions by playing poker in a movie, you...

Ben Affleck is an accomplished actor, producer, writer and director, proven by his two Academy Awards. So why does social media chatter generally refer to each of his new and effective outings worthy of Oscars consideration as a “comeback?”
In the middle of his newest film “The Last Duel,” it dawned on me. Nothing regarding his interpretation of Count Pierre d’Alençon should work with his sensibilities as an actor. Yet he completely steals the show in one of three segments designed to belong to Jacques Le Gris (played by Adam Driver). Unfortunately, the Hollywood machine, critics and consumers have taken his abilities for granted. Perhaps it was the paparazzi’s focus on Bennifer or his openness regarding his struggles with sobriety. Either way, he’s shown himself, on multiple occasions, an uncommonly invigorating actor when placed in the right hands.

Mal Z. Lawrence, whose defiantly old-school Borscht Belt stand-up comedy delighted audiences and happily surprised critics when the Catskills on Broadway revue became a hit in 1991, died Monday at a hospice facility in Delray Beach, Florida. He was 88.

I’m a sucker for card-sharp movies, and I’m not alone. The allure of films like “The Cincinnati Kid” or “California Split” or “Rounders” is that the poker games have the quality of athletic showdowns: the kind of hand-to-hand, eyeball-to-eyeball aggression we associate with a contest taking place in a gladiatorial arena. But in a card movie, it’s all done sitting in chairs, with mental acuity (and fate!) as the only weapon. Great poker scenes, in their slyly civilized cards-close-to-the-vest way, formalize the desire to destroy your opponent, but they’re also layered with a drive to psych him out that most combat scenes don’t have. To me, the single greatest movie card sequence is the Texas hold ’em tournament at the center of “Casino Royale.” It’s a little movie unto itself, and the currents of strategy and malevolence and sheer nimble play that pass between...

“No Sudden Move” (July 1): Directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Don Cheadle, Benicio Del Toro, David Harbour, Kieran Culkin, Jon Hamm, Ray Liotta, and “Uncut Gems” breakout Julia Fox, among others, the heist thriller is set in 1950s Detroit and “enters on a group of small-time criminals who are hired to steal what they think is a simple document. For any movie to be popular, it’s essential to have an intriguing and exciting storyline. While the best can turn dull stories into something gripping, most use a naturally engaging topic, like gambling. Which helps create a sense of drama, glamour, or even risk, tension, or shattered dreams.
Another great thing about casino scenes is that they’re really versatile and are usable in any movie. Here is a selection of some of the best casino scenes in movies.
Perhaps one of the most well-known movie series which consistently features casinos is the iconic James Bond. Just some places featured include Las Vegas, Monte Carlo, and Macau over the years.
In Thunderball, the agent plays cards with criminal Emilio Largo in a high stakes game. In Diamonds are Forever the fictional casino Whyte House is featured. In The Man with the Golden Gun, a floating casino is featured – the Macau Palace.

High roller casinos are defined as those that allow players to make larger than usual bets. There is no specific definition of what constitutes a high roller, although typically casinos would class those that wager around £100 or more per hand as high rollers. There are various perks offered to high rollers by casinos to tempt them to return. People who regularly bet large sums of money in one particular casino can expect to receive a number of perks, which might include free luxury accommodation, transport to the casino by private jet and complimentary food and drink throughout the stay.
The higher the amounts being gambled, the better the perks are likely to be. People love to watch high rollers play – the thrill of watching someone risking thousands of dollars on a single have of cards cannot be beaten. Many filmmakers tap into this desire to watch high rollers by featuring casino scenes in movies,...

Edward Norton has laid his cards on the table – he hates what President Donald Trump is doing in refusing to concede the election.
In a tweetstorm rant on Friday, the 51-year-old actor and filmmaker used gambling metaphors to describe his outrage. Norton was part of the cast with Matt Damon in the1998 cult classic Rounders, which explored the underground of high-stakes poker. A “rounder” is a person who travels from city to city seeking such games.
Norton began on Twitter by noting that he is “no political pundit,” but claimed his father’s work as a federal prosecutor and his own poker background allows him insight into what he believes Trump is doing.
“I do not think Trump is trying to ‘make his base happy’ or ‘laying the groundwork for his own network’ or that ‘chaos is what he loves,'” Norton tweeted. “The core of it is that he knows he’s in deep,...

In a world where film actors are highly paid to characterize and technically bluff their way convincingly on camera, many performers, in their spare time, are also highly skilled, professional gamblers:
Charlie Sheen
According to Denise Richards, ex-wife of actor Charlie Sheen, her former husband had a particular fondness for sports betting. Richards openly claimed Sheen gambled every day, spending up to $200,000 a week on betting and casinos. There are probably lessons to be learned from Sheen's life extremes, and one of them would be, to be careful if you catch casino fever, and to never take your gambling as far as the actor has done on numerous occasions.
Tobey Maguire
"With great power comes great responsibility," says actor Tobey Maguire as 'Peter Parker' in director Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" (2002). Maguire also believes that with great opportunities comes great money, as the performer is also a big stakes tournament-winning, poker player.

There’s always been something about gambling that has been of huge appeal to filmmakers. Ever since the first Westerns, with the poker action played out in smoky bars, it’s been at the heart of some of the tensest moments ever in cinema. The reason for this is simple: whenever characters are playing for money, viewers are invested in seeing whether they’re going to win or lose. What’s more, the stakes involved can often be high and even sometimes a matter of life or death.
In some films it’s all about the gambling while, in others, it only plays a minor, but significant, part. But however central it is to the action, it’s certain to make a big impact – as these five examples show only too well.

When it comes to gambling, we all immediately think of roulette. This term is so deeply imprinted in our subconscious that our imagination provides the right images. The reason is easy to explain: Roulette plays a prominent role in many Hollywood films and series. The depiction of roulette has led new users to try the game at online casinos also where users can use free spins on registration no deposit and some other bonuses. You can apply the strategies used from your gambling movies while playing online.
There are, for example, a wide variety of James Bond films that occasionally venture into the casino. Casino Royale is of course the figurehead when we think of James Bond and Roulette. But the Bond film “Specter” is also about gambling. The casino scene with the Bond actor is always a must. What fits better than a game of roulette, a graceful young beauty,...

As the 'gaming' world continues to evolve into the digital realm, we are still waiting to see movies about online casinos. Although someone looking down at their smart phone or iPad wouldn't make for a very exciting feature, we did find more 'gambling' films streaming on Netflix:
With the Netflix TV drama series "Narcos" now an online game, new online casino platforms continue to develop, offering access to state-of-the-art CG slots, with perks not available at land-based equivalents, including free spin rounds, skill-based mini-games and opportunities to win multiple progressive jackpots.
Gambling movies now streaming on Netflix include:
"Win It All"
The eccentric comedy "Win It All" (2017), written, directed by 'mumblecore' pioneer Joe Swanberg and released by Netflix, stars Jake Johnson as 'Eddie Garrett' who agrees to watch a duffel bag for an acquaintance who is heading to prison.

Streaming giant Netflix is proving to be an ideal place to watch quality TV and movies. But as the company focuses more on original series, their movie catalog has become smaller. Still, the service offers at least 3500+ movies and hidden in that vast collection are some riveting films that involve casinos and gambling:
2020 is turning out to be a year of 'social distancing' and quarantines. Everything is affected, from Marvel movies, to TV series, Vegas Casinos, and all major sports leagues.
But if you can't visit your favorite casino due to lockdown restrictions, why not enjoy the same atmosphere and gambling action from the comfort of your own home?
"Casino"
From director Martin Scorsese, "Casino" is based on the life of 'Frank Rosenthal', a professional gambler and casino executive with deep connections to the mob in the 1950's and '60's.
Robert De Niro's character 'Sam Rothstein', was based on Rosenthal's life.

The movie industry’s fascination with casinos and gambling is already well-known. There is just something about luxurious Las Vegas casinos that pins the audience to their seats and transports them into an otherwise inaccessible world. Not all of us afford to be professional gamblers, but we can all sit back and gaze at the adventures of our heroes as they make their way through money, luxury and adventure.
It seems there is a recipe that guarantees success for all casino movies: drama. Nobody likes to watch a gambler being cautious, calculating their every move and stepping back once they felt they earned enough for the night. We need the thrill of the fight; we need to see our heroes putting themselves in perilous situations and then wonder how they will manage to get out alive.

"You know, Joe, there ain't no roadmap to being a daddy. We're just doing the best we can..." Quiver Distr. has debuted an official trailer for a southern drama titled Walkaway Joe, marking the feature directorial debut of actor Tom Wright. The trailer makes it seem like a billiards hustling film similar to Rounders, with some interesting characters dealing with their own demons in this. Walkaway Joe is the story of an unlikely friendship between a young boy searching for his father in pool halls across the country, and a wandering loner hiding from his past. In their encounter with each other they experience the power of a second chance, and a shot at redemption. Starring David Strathairn, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Julian Feder, with Julie Ann Emery, David Jensen, and Susan Gallagher. Looks a bit cliche, but still maybe worthwhile. Netflix has announced the television shows and movies that will be leaving their streaming service in April 2020.
Some of the biggest titles departing include 90’s mega-hits like The Shawshank Redemption and Goodfellas, popular comedies such as Step Brothers and The Hangover, and Nicolas Cage’s adventure flick National Treasure. Perhaps most unfortunate for many families will be the loss of the Looney Toons and basketball mashup Space Jam, which has recently been one of Netflix’s most watched films.
With so many people being forced inside during the Covid-19 coronavirus outbreak, it’s a shame any titles have to leave the service at all. But it should be noted that many of these could return in the future since Netflix has a tendency to add and remove the same movies and shows as licensing rights get purchased, expired, and renewed. Showtime is taking on the story of Uber, putting in development an untitled limited series based on Mike Isaac’s bestselling book Super Pumped: The Battle For Uber, from Billions co-creators Brian Koppelman and David Levien.
The book, published by W.W. & Company, Inc. on September 3, chronicles the founding of Uber through its 2019 initial public offering.
Pivoting on Travis Kalanick, Uber’s hard-charging CEO who was ultimately ousted in a boardroom coup, Showtime says the limited series will depict the roller-coaster ride of the upstart transportation company, embodying the highs and lows of Silicon Valley. Even amid the radical upheaval generated within the global tech capital, Uber stands out as both a marvel and a cautionary tale, featuring internal and external battles that ripple with unpredictable consequences.
Koppelman and Levien will executive produce and write the series as part of their overall deal with Showtime, which will produce. Isaac will co-executive produce the project.

Actor Josh Pais is proud to be “that guy.” Over the last 30-plus years, you’ve likely seen his work in Rounders, Scream 3, Ray Donovan or his 90 other roles. If his face doesn’t register, then perhaps his voice will ring a bell since he played Raphael in 1990’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Either way, Pais is a card-carrying member of Hollywood’s select “That Guy” club, and even if you can’t quite place him, such a distinction is a badge of honor since Pais has worked consistently enough since 1988 to become ...

More than 80 years later, Marvel’s Blade Movie will show that casinos have a special place in the hearts of Hollywood film directors.
Actually The Matrix Slot is based on one of the most popular movies, but not all gambling movies are the same, though. In fact, most of them focus not on casino gaming itself, but rather on its glamour and magnificence – which is great, but we believe there is something even greater.
