Tom Rothman Reups As Sony Pictures Motion Group Chairman & CEO In Multi-Year Contract
Image
It’s official: Tom Rothman has signed a multi-year extension of his contract as Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures’ Motion Picture Group. The deal will currently make Rothman the longest serving film chief in Hollywood, and that includes his run at 20th Century Fox.

Some have wondered whether Rothman would ever retire, and the fact of the matter is that he loves the movie business a tremendous amount. This is seen in him being a steadfast proponent of theatrical, and a believer in its future longevity, not just in franchises, but original movies as well. For Rothman, cinema is about the big swings. If theatrical is going to survive, originality must prevail, and sometimes that means co-financing some projects ensuring that they hit the screen.

The news comes as Sony is expected to have a big summer with Karate Kid: Legends on May 30 and Oscar winner Danny Boyle’s...

‘Practical Magic 2’ Sets Early Fall 2026 Release
Image
Warner Bros just announced on social that the Nicole Kidman-Sandra Bullock sequel, Practical Magic 2, is hitting cinemas on Sept. 18, 2026.

Note that’s not the post Labor Day weekend slot which Warners typically reserves for spooky movies; currently their DC title Clayface is occupying that date, Sept. 11, 2026.

Practical Magic 2 will go head-to-head with Sony’s Zach Cregger take on Resident Evil on Sept. 18. Warners always had the date on hold for an untitled movie.

Susanne Bier is directing the sequel which is penned by Akiva Goldsman. Bullock, Kidman and Denise Dinovi are producing.

The original 1998 movie, which was directed by Griffin Dunne and grossed more than $47 million stateside, followed two witch sisters, raised by their eccentric aunts in a small town, who are faced with closed-minded prejudice and a curse that threatens to prevent them from finding lasting love.

Bier’s directed Bullock’s big Netflix thriller,...

‘Practical Magic 2,’ Starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, Sets Fall 2026 Release Date
Image
“Practical Magic 2,” a follow-up to the 1998 fantasy comedy, will cast a theatrical spell next fall. The witchy sequel, starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, is set to debut on Sept. 18, 2026.

Bullock and Kidman are reprising their roles as sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, who descend from a long line of witches. In the original movie, based on the novel by Alice Hoffman, they find themselves fighting off a curse that kills the men they fall in love with. It’s unclear where the second film will pick up, though the story is reportedly based on a later installment in Hoffman’s “Practical Magic” book series.

Warner Bros. released a short, text-only teaser with a voiceover from Bullock and Kidman, who chant the following incantation: “Tooth of wolf and morning dew. Something old and something new. Let the spell begin to mix. Sept. 18, 2026.” On its current release date, “Practical Magic 2...

‘Event Horizon’ Prequel Comic Series ‘Dark Descent’ Launches in August from Idw
Image
Event Horizon was considered a critical and commercial failure upon its release in 1997, but the cosmic horror film has since developed a cult following large enough to warrant a comic book prequel series.

Variety reports that Event Horizon: Dark Descent will launch its first of five issues releasing on August 20 via Idw Publishing.

Taking place prior to the film’s 2047 setting, the comic will uncover what really happened to Captain Kilpack and the first Event Horizon crew as their ship journeyed across a nightmarish realm of torments beyond imagining.

At the helm are writer Christian Ward (Batman: City of Madness), artist Tristan Jones (Aliens: Defiance), and colorist Pip Martin (That Texas Blood).

Issue #1 features a primary cover by Jeffrey Alan Love, variant covers by Ward, Martin Simmonds, and Joshua Hixson, a foil art variant of Ward’s cover, and a sketch cover.

‘Until Dawn’ Overtakes Big Blumhouse Bomb at Global Box Office After Recovering Reported Budget
Image
Has the horror movie curse finally been lifted? With Sinners doing so well and The Monkey emerging as the second-biggest hit in Neon’s history, an argument can be made. But the sort of bread-and-butter horror titles that would routinely do well at the box office still seem to be struggling. Before the pandemic, films like Until Dawn would’ve quietly cracked the $100 million mark. Think: the Resident Evil franchise. But after two weeks in theaters worldwide, the movie has only made it past the $30 million milestone so far. Directed by David F. Sandberg, the video game adaptation has reason to celebrate this weekend; it’s finally in the black.

The rule of thumb says that a movie must make twice its reported budget at the box office to break even, seeing as half the revenue goes to exhibitors. Until Dawn, which was produced on a reported budget of $15 million,...

Sinners Box Office Crosses Major Global Milestone That Justifies The Ryan Coogler Horror Movie's Huge Budget
Image
Sinners has passed a crucial milestone at the worldwide box office. The new horror movie, which follows twins Smoke and Stack (both played by Michael B. Jordan) facing a sinister evil after returning to their Mississippi hometown in the 1930s, was directed by Black Panther and Creed's Ryan Coogler. The Sinners box office has set multiple records, including earning the best Easter opening weekend ever for an R-rated movie and having the second-best week 2 drop ever for an R-rated horror movie.

Per Variety, as of Sunday morning, Sinners is projected to close its third weekend in theaters by hitting a cumulative domestic total of $181 million. When combined with the $57 million that it is projected to have earned overseas by the end of Sunday, this brings its cumulative global box office total to $236 million. That total sees it passing the $225 million milestone, which is most likely its break-even point, because its...

Survival horror newcomer Midnight Special points and clicks its way into early access
Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez in Resident Evil (2002)
Though Aaa darlings like Resident Evil and Silent Hill sometimes hog the spotlight, Clock Tower casts a shadow just as long. Even on the Super Famicom, harrowing chase sequences created narrative tension like nails on a chalkboard. The result? An anxiety-inducing horror experience that still looms in the minds of many a '90s gamer. The newest product of Clock Tower's legacy? Midnight Special, which is set to release in early access on Steam on May 8.

A point-and-click survival horror game from Scared Stupid Inc., Midnight Special knows how to twist a familiar formula. Babysitting for a pair of twins in a creepy manor? It's a horror premise that would be equally at home in a Goosebumps novel or Dario Argento film. That's the first sign that Midnight Special is, well, special. From this simple start, we get mysteries, murders, and moderate puzzling. If anyone needed a reason to believe in Giallo games,...

Watch the trailer for new season of Resident Alien, and for other things
Linda Hamilton, Alan Tudyk, Elizabeth Bowen, Meredith Garretson, Corey Reynolds, Sara Tomko, Levi Fiehler, Alice Wetterlund, and Judah Prehn in Resident Alien (2021)
We're almost halfway through the year, and 2025 still has a lot of interesting TV yet to give us. It's time for us to throw a trailer party.

First up, SyFy's sturdy sitcom Resident Alien is returning for a fourth season, with the hard-working Alan Tudyk back for another round as the extraterrestrial who killed a small town Colorado doctor and then took his face, and who then learned he kinda liked humans despite how awkward he was around them. I gotta give it up for any sitcom that lasts this long, especially one with so wild a premise.

The new season begins with Harry (Tudyk) having been replaced by another, more sinister alien, but based on the trailer above, it looks like that plotline gets resolved pretty quickly. There are other hijinks to get to. Resident Evil season 4 premieres on SyFy on June 6.

Ruby Sunday returns in this week's...

Matthew Lillard May Join Mike Flanagan's 'Carrie' Amazon TV Series
Image
Horror triple-threat Mike Flanagan's TV series adaptation of a Stephen King classic continues to gain momentum. After casting relative newcomer Summer H. Howell in the titular role, it has been revealed that Scream icon Matthew Lillard is now in talks to join the Carrie fold as well, joining Howell and Netflix's Resident Evil star Siena Agudong in the pivotal role of Sue Snell. It's another vote of confidence for the King debut novel-turned-film-turned-tv-series from Amazon's Prime Video, the planned home for the new show.

Lillard's purported role has not been revealed in the new report from Deadline, but it continues apace with the current career resurgence the actor is experiencing, thanks to roles in Five Nights at Freddy's, Scream 7, and the forthcoming second season of Daredevil: Born Again. The Scooby-Doo actor has worked extremely consistently over the past twenty years, thanks to supporting roles in a multitude...

Matthew Lillard is circling a role in Mike Flanagan's Carrie series
Image
Scream star Matthew Lillard is considering a role in the upcoming Carrie television series in development from Mike Flanagan for Amazon.

Deadline reports that the star has been considering teaming up with Flanagan again for the show, which is based on Stephen King's iconic horror novel. Lillard has previously worked with Flanagan on The Life of Chuck, an acclaimed film based on a King novella that will premiere this June. Flanagan frequently works with actors more than once, so this casting would make sense.

Per the outlet, there hasn't been any update on who Lillard would be playing in the series, but there aren't that many adult male options in the story. It seems likely that he would play the school's principal or maybe a teacher. Either way, I'm guessing Lillard's part will be somewhat small since Carrie's biggest parts are dedicated to Carrie herself, her mother, Carrie's teen tormentors,...

Matthew Lillard in Talks to Join Mike Flanagan’s ‘Carrie’ TV Series
Image
Matthew Lillard is back in the horror genre in a big way, first starring in the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie and now returning to the Scream franchise next year. Lillard is also re-entering the world of Stephen King, with Deadline reporting today that he’s in talks to star in the upcoming Amazon series adaptation of King’s Carrie from creator Mike Flanagan!

Matthew Lillard will next be seen in Neon’s The Life of Chuck, also directed by Mike Flanagan and also based on a Stephen King story. That movie, however, is not a horror movie.

Prime Video recently confirmed a series green light for “Carrie,” an eight-episode adaptation of Stephen King‘s classic 1974 horror novel produced by Amazon MGM Studios.

Mike Flanagan serves as writer and showrunner in addition to directing select episodes.

Summer H. Howell (Curse of Chucky) has landed the leading role of Carrie White for the Flanagan series,...

Matthew Lillard Might Be Taking a Stab at Mike Flanagan’s ‘Carrie’ Reboot
Image
The Scream King continues his reign. Matthew Lillard has officially secured his next takeover in a horror project, with Deadline revealing that the Scream actor is in talks to star in Mike Flanagan’s series adaptation of Carrie. The project would mark a reunion for the pair, who worked alongside one another on the upcoming The Life of Chuck, which, like Carrie, is also a Stephen King adaptation. It’s incredibly exciting news for audiences who have loved watching Lillard take over the genre since his standout role as psychotic killer Stu Macher in Wes Craven’s iconic, franchise-starting 1996 film, Scream — a role that he’s set to reprise in 2026’s Kevin Williamson-helmed Scream 7.

As of right now, no specific details surrounding Lillard’s Carrie character have been confirmed. However, we know that the actor woulld join a lineup of talent that also includes new-to-the-scene Summer H. Howell,...

Zombieland: What Happened to this classic zom-com?
Image
Having experienced the Covid-19 pandemic, the world has had a small taste of navigating a widespread outbreak of disease, seclusion, and an alarming decrease in the availability of toilet paper. When compared to the conditions of a zombie apocalypse, similarities surface, exposing the disturbing flaws of human nature and, on a more positive note, our inclination to establish a found family and form connections in unlikely places. Our desire to survive while also maintaining what’s left of our humanity becomes paramount to salvaging our sanity while increasing the possibility of finding solace in a world gone to shit. Here’s the thing, though. To survive, you’ve got to follow the rules. Without order, chaos reigns. Without precaution, you’re likely to end up as a screaming pile of zombie chow instead of living in a fortified lap of luxury, sleeping atop a bed of Twinkies. Ruben Fleischer, the director of 2009’s Zombieland,...

All 28 Live-Action Horror Movies Based on a Video Game, Ranked
Image
Video game movies do not have a great reputation, but their reputation is getting better. As modern filmmakers do a better job of understanding and cracking the source material, adapting it faithfully and effectively for the silver screen, the overall stats for video game adaptations seem to be on the rise, with better and better movie versions coming out all the time.

Still, the history of video game movies remains littered with cheap cash-ins and well-intentioned disappointments, and you can really tell from looking at all the live-action horror movies that have come out in the last few decades. Scary video games are incredibly immersive, but many of the movies based on those games have fallen prey to unconvincing production values, amateurish writing/directing/acting, and bizarre and ridiculous tones that weren’t necessarily in the games to begin with.

Let’s take a look at every horror movie based...

Weapons Trailer: Missing Children Fuel the Fear Behind Zach Cregger’s New Horror Movie
Image
The new trailer for Zach Cregger’s Weapons, told from the point of view of a child, sets up an eerie tale about a small community thrown into turmoil after 17 schoolchildren from a single class go missing one night. No one knows what happened, or who’s to blame — though their teacher Miss Gandy (Julia Garner) is immediately under suspicion.

Cregger (who got his start as a founding member of the Whitest Kids U’ Know comedy troupe) madea big splash with the critically acclaimed Barbarian — in his review for Consequence, Clint Worthington declared it “your new bonkers horror favorite of 2022.” According to Deadline, the competition around acquiring Weapons was so intense that when Jordan Peele’s production company lost the bidding, Peele fired his long-time management team. Cregger, meanwhile, will be moving onto a new take on Resident Evil with his next movie, due out in 2026.

With a cast also including Josh Brolin,...

Weapons trailer | Julia Garner looks for missing kids in Zach Cregger’s new horror film
Zach Cregger
A full class of kids go missing in Zach Cregger’s next movie and we have a trailer to prove it. More on Weapons below.

Ever since Barbarian premiered, all eyes have been on Zach Cregger and what the director might do next. He was linked to a new Clue film for a while, but has seemingly now swapped that out Resident Evil.

But before Cregger heads to the world of video game adaptations, he’s treating us to another original horror film, titled Weapons. With the film release date only a couple months away, Warner Bros. has just released a new trailer to tie us over.

Take a look below:

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Weapons looks absolutely terrifying. Cregger isn’t the first to utilise creepy kids in his film to elicit terror, but if Barbarian is anything to go by, audiences are in for another wholly unique horror trip.

‘Weapons’ Trailer: Julia Garner Tries to Convince Josh Brolin That She’s Innocent in Zach Cregger’s Twisted Horror Epic
Image
Julia Garner is caught in Zach Cregger’s twisted trap of a horror film, “Weapons.” The

“Fantastic Four: First Steps” actress plays an elementary school teacher whose entire class, sans one student, is missing under eerie circumstances. While the kids appear to have run away on their own volition, there might be a possessed force at play…

Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan co-star in “Barbarian” director Cregger’s latest horror/thriller. The logline reads: “’Weapons’ is a horror film that follows an entire classroom of children who get out of their beds and disappear one night without a trace. When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance.”

New Line Cinema chief Richard Brenner has described the film as being “batshit insane.

The 17 Best Video Game Movies of All Time, from ‘Mortal Kombat’ to ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’
Image
[Editor’s note: this list was originally published in October 2023. It has been updated to coincide with the theatrical release of “Until Dawn.”]

Every year, gamers ask themselves: Is this the year video game movies finally gain some respect? And the answer in the year 2025, is, unequivocally, yes.

The sea change in video game movies’ respectability at the box office kickstarted in 2023, which saw three films based on existing games release in theaters. None were outright critical successes. Quite the opposite, actually: critics saw “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” as unremarkable and mediocre, “Gran Turismo” as a glorified advertisement, and “Five Nights as Freddy’s” as a complete borefest. But the movies all performed respectably at the box office, with “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” becoming the second-highest grossing film of the year, and “Five Nights at Freddy’s” smashing expectations to become one of 2023’s biggest horror movies.

These successes foreshadowed the slow rise of video game films as a dominant trend in franchise cinema. 2024 saw “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” release to $491.9 million,...

One more member of the Scream family is set to make their return for the seventh installment in the slasher franchise. With universe creator, Kevin Williamson, standing at the helm, another behind-the-scenes face from early on in the beloved film series will be lending his unique vision to the production, with composer Marco Beltrami officially confirming his return. Now, audiences can expect to hear many of the same themes that helped to set the tone during the first four Wes Craven-directed features. Taking to Instagram to confirm the news, Beltrami responded to a comment on a post from 2023, telling one follower “don’t worry, I am” when he was asked to return to his position for Scream...

Besides video games and live-action movies, the Resident Evil franchise also has its fair share of animated entries. Sadly, the latest of these "anime" movies will soon be voted off the proverbial streaming island.

Released two years ago in Asian theaters, Resident Evil: Death Island is the newest animated CGI movie in the franchise. Currently streaming on Netflix, it's one of multiple entries in the property on the streaming platform. For those who want to catch up on the series' canon, they have less than a month to do so by watching the movie.

The Newest Resident Evil Animated Movie Is Soon Leaving Netflix Image via Tms Entertainment

Produced by Tms Entertainment, Resident Evil: Death Island was the latest of the CGI Resident Evil "anime" movies. These are treated as being canon with the video games, with Death Island set in 2015 (two years before the events of Resident Evil 7:...

Why ‘Until Dawn’ Video Game Writers Aren’t Credited on the Movie
Image
When the credits roll on Until Dawn this weekend, hundreds of people who contributed to Hollywood’s latest video game movie will be acknowledged for their work, from director David F. Sandberg all the way down to the assistants and the caterer. But two notable names will not be among them: Larry Fessenden and Graham Reznick, the duo who wrote the 2015 hit video game that launched the franchise.

While comic book writers and artists often complain about skimpy payments or lack of ample credit for the work that inspires movies, they generally are given a special thanks in the credits of those films. But as sources who spoke with The Hollywood Reporter note, that’s generally not true in the world of video game adaptations, where the company behind a game — not the game’s creators — are credited.

It’s something video game writers are now thinking about more and more,...

‘Until Dawn’ Review: The Interactive Survival Horror Video Game Becomes a Grab Bag of a Slasher Movie in Which Nothing’s at Stake
Image
As indicated by the recent announcement that there’s going to be a “John Wick 5,” death in the movies simply isn’t what it used to be. There’s no longer anything final about it; increasingly, it’s not anything at all. At the end of “John Wick 4,” John Wick didn’t just get killed — he seemed really dead, as in let’s-put-a-fork-in-the-franchise dead. But, of course, the moment you had that thought, and the word “franchise” entered your brain, you just knew it couldn’t be. It would leave too much money on the table. The awesome death of John Wick needed to be rendered null and void so that Keanu Reeves could come back.

“Until Dawn” is a gimcrack horror-movie hodpepodge that reflects the very same attitude towards death. (It doesn’t matter! Just push reset!) But the film doesn’t pull that cheap trick at the...

16 Years Ago, Sony Released a PlayStation-Exclusive That Made Me Feel Like a Superhero – And Then Forgot About It Altogether
Image
Sixteen years ago, Sony released a game that gave me the rare experience of feeling like a true superhero. It wasn’t just about flashy powers or saving the day, it was about being immersed in a world where my decisions had consequences and my actions truly mattered. That game was Infamous.

As Cole MacGrath, I could scale buildings, unleash lightning, and make choices that shaped the fate of a city. For the first time, I felt like I was more than just a player; I was the hero, and the game made sure I felt every bit of that power.

However, ever since the PS4 title: Infamous Second Son in 2014, the franchise has been left behind by Sony, and I’ve been waiting ever since for it to return.

Sony’s missed opportunity with Infamous‘s legacy

You still remember, or not? I still do. Back in 2009, Infamous was...

Weapons: Eerie First Teaser Trailer For Barbarian Director Zach Cregger's Next Horror Movie Released
Image
The creepy first teaser for Barbarian Zack Cregger's next horror film, Weapons, has been released online.

Up until details from the full trailer were disclosed following a recent CinemaCon screening, the only information we had been given about the movie is that it was developed as “a multi and inter-related story horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia, the 1999 actor-crammed showcase from filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson.”

Warner Bros. has also released an official synopsis, but it doesn't really give us much more to go on: "When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance."

In the trailer, we see the children rushing out of their homes at 2:17 am, as a voiceover tells the father of one of the missing kids, Mr. Graff, that he understands his frustration,...

‘Weapons’ Trailer Teases Children Vanishing in Horror Film From ‘Barbarian’ Director Zach Cregger
Image
The teaser trailer for Weapons shows a number of children fleeing their homes in writer-director Zach Cregger’s horror feature.

Warner Bros. releases the film in theaters Aug. 8. The cast includes Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Benedict Wong and Amy Madigan.

The multi-story narrative for Weapons centers on a small town where children have been disappearing late at night. “Those kids walked out of the homes,” a character says somberly via voiceover in the trailer. “No one pulled them out. No one forced them.”

Cregger, Roy Lee, J.D. Lifshitz, Raphael Margules and Miri Yoon serve as producers.

In early 2023, The Hollywood Reporter reported that New Line won a fierce bidding war for Cregger’s spec script for Weapons, with the filmmaker landing eight figures to write and direct. Led by Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgard and Justin Long, Barbarian hit theaters in 2022 and became a cult hit,...

‘Weapons’ Teaser: Josh Brolin Investigates the Disappearance of Julia Garner’s Entire Class of Kids in Zach Cregger’s Latest Nightmare
Image
Zach Cregger is building out his “Barbarian” cinematic universe with the highly-anticipated “Weapons.” While little is known about Cregger’s latest horror/thriller, New Line Cinema chief Richard Brenner described the film as being “batshit insane.”

Julia Garner stars as a teacher whose entire classroom of kids goes missing in the middle of the night. Josh Brolin is one of the many parents demanding answers. Did Garner’s character lure them away? Is this supernatural? And who is orchestrating a slew of murders in town…could it be the children?

The logline reads: “Weapons” is a “horror film that follows an entire classroom of children who get out of their beds and disappear one night without a trace. When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance.

‘Devil May Cry’ Could Solve All Its Problems If It Just Admits Its Fatal Flaw
Image
All that glitters isn’t gold, and the same can be said for Netflix’s Devil May Cry. The teaser and promotional videos looked promising, but fans aren’t happy with how it turned out. So far, it has received mixed reviews, but that is not all.

The marketing and hype garnered traction and views. This is true for the background score, the album, and impeccable animation. Studio Mir did a great job executing the action sequences. However, it has a glaring flaw that needs to be addressed and admitted.

In other words, the visionaries need to highlight and work on the major pitfalls associated with the series. This is crucial for the franchise, as most fans respond to the announcement of Season 2. But what exactly is the flaw that made fans flip the tables? Let’s unpack this.

Netflix gears up for Devil May Cry season 2

Five Horror Movies Based on Video Games to Stream This Week
Image
With season two of “The Last of Us” now underway and director David F. Sandberg‘s adaptation of Until Dawn arriving in theaters this Friday, horror video game adaptations are having a moment. That doesn’t even touch on the box office juggernaut that is Minecraft, or sequels Mortal Kombat 2 and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 arriving later this year.

It doesn’t appear that the horror video game adaptation trend will slow down any time soon, with Barbarian director Zach Cregger gearing up to take on Resident Evil and André Øvredal (The Last Voyage of the Demeter) attached to direct Bendy and the Ink Machine.

All of this to say that movies based on video games have come a very long way since 1993’s Super Mario Bros., especially in the genre space. This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to horror video game adaptations. Here’s where to stream these five horror movies.

‘Minecraft Movie’ Envy Puts Gen Z Video Game Adaptations Front and Center
Image
Everyone involved in “A Minecraft Movie” was hoping their adaptation of the beloved video game, which debuted in 2011 and still has more than 175 million monthly active users (as in right now), would be a success. But after over 10 years of development, a rotating creative team and a precarious theatrical landscape, no one anticipated Jared Hess’ movie would be quite as big as it is.

“I will say that myself, Legendary and the filmmakers behind ‘Minecraft’ believed in the potential for it,” Cate Adams, senior vice president of production at Warner Bros. Pictures, told TheWrap. “But did I expect people to be jumping on each other’s shoulders and screaming ‘Chicken jockey’ and filming it on Tiktok? No, I don’t think I expected that.”

As of Sunday, “A Minecraft Movie” has amassed a global total of $720.8 million, comprised of $344.6 million domestically and $376.2 million internationally, putting it on track to be...

The Last of Us: The 6 different levels of infected on HBO and PlayStation
Image
Other than Joel and Ellie, the thing people know about The Last of Us is the infected. They’re zombie-like, except they aren’t undead. Their minds have been taken over by cordyceps, causing them to act violently and somewhat animalistically. The other difference is that there are levels of infection. Different versions of zombies appear in movies and games like Resident Evil, but the ones in The Last of Us aren’t called by that name.

This article will break down the five kinds of infected that you’ll typically see in The Last of Us and end with the anomaly that’s only been seen once. Let’s start with the most common on the HBO show and the video game.

The Last of Us Runners

Runners are the most common of the infected because they’re the first stage. They’re also the most basic. There isn...

Alex Garland Reveals the Inspiration Behind '28 Days Later's Sprinting Zombies
Image
Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later, starring Cillian Murphy, changed the zombie/horror genre when it was first released back in 2002. As well as making a star out of the Irish actor, 28 Days Later also gave fans nightmares for years by introducing fast zombies (known as "Rage Zombies" in the film). For decades, the genre had seen humanity plagued by undead creatures that walked slower than your grandma. But Alex Garland, who wrote the screenplay for 28 Days Later, was frustrated with that convention, and the inspiration behind the movie's iconic sprinting zombies came from a very nerdy place.

During a recent interview with GQ to break down his incredibly impressive filmography, Alex Garland reflected on the creation of 28 Days Later's rage zombies. As well as being a screenwriter, director, and a novelist, Garland is also a very keen gamer, having lent his authorial skills to Dmc: Devil May Cry.

28 Years Later Trailer Reveals More Of The Monstrously Mutated Zombies
Image
Boy, good thing there's absolutely nothing topical about a pandemic movie in which hordes of brainless humans have overrun an entire country and are making things a living hell for the rest of us just trying to survive. Nope, nothing at all! We haven't had to resort to carrying bows and arrows to fight off those infected drones just yet but, well, maybe it's only a matter of time.

That time has come and gone in the world of "28 Years Later," the long-awaited sequel to Danny Boyle's post-apocalyptic thriller "28 Days Later" and the 2007 follow-up film "28 Weeks Later." Our first look at the official trailer from late last year is still seared into our brains, chronicling the continued downfall of humanity almost three full decades after the rage virus first infected our friends across the pond -- the hapless inhabitants of the UK. The original film followed Cillian Murphy's Jim,...

Mikey Madison passes on role in Shawn Levy’s Star Wars movie
Image
After winning the Academy Award for Best Actress for Anora, Mikey Madison has her pick of projects, and for a brief moment, one of those was Star Wars. According to The InSneider, Madison was rumoured to be in early talks to join the cast of Shawn Levy’s upcoming Star Wars movie, but Variety has now reported that the actress has passed on the role.

In addition to Star Wars, Sneider said that Madison was also considering an offer to star in Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie. Now that she’s passed on Star Wars, perhaps Resident Evil could be her next project.

Sneider added that Levy’s Star Wars movie is “currently casting the lead role, which is a 15-year-old boy, as well as the boy’s mother, plus two villains.” There’s another significant female character in the mix, which is the role Madison was being eyed for.

Night Shift slasher video game gets the film adaptation treatment
Image
The company Puppet Combo has been doing their best to horrify video gamers for years, making retro-style games with “a gritty VHS feel and low poly stylization.” As they say, “fans of Resident Evil, Silent Hill and Texas Chainsaw Massacre will warm right up to their games… or rather, their blood will run

cold.” Back in 2018, they brought the world a slasher video game called Night Shift, which has players tending to a desolate convenience store while a masked killer lurks somewhere in the shadows. Now, Puppet Combo is giving Night Shift the film adaptation treatment – and they’ve shot the movie on 16mm film, aiming to “stay true to Puppet Combo’s signature VHS-style aesthetic and obsessive attention to detail for a true ’80s slasher style experience.” A trailer for the video game can be seen in the embed above.

Written and directed by Puppet Combo creator Ben Cocuzza,...

‘Home Sweet Home: Rebirth’ Review – Horror Movie Adaptation Won’t Please Fans of the Video Game
Image
Approximations of the title Home Sweet Home are very commonplace in media. There’s a 1981 Thanksgiving-themed slasher that goes by the name, as well as a rom-com from a few years back that (according to its IMDb page) revolves around a coffee shop barista wooing the man of her dreams by pretending to be devoutly Christian. Should you drop the first “Home” from the title, then you’ve also got a South Korean apocalyptic TV show added into the mix, alongside a Capcom classic that is widely considered to be the forefather of Resident Evil.

The point is that it can be hard to google Home Sweet Home with any real specificity, and even filtering by the word “horror” won’t narrow the search down as much as you might think. For the uninitiated, it can therefore be a little confusing trying to discern what Home Sweet Home: Rebirth is...

Grew up with these video games? The movie versions totally deliver

Some of these movies made billions, others just nailed the vibe. Either way, they’re all worth a watch.

I’m seeing “A Minecraft Movie” this week — it’s already crushing it at the box office with over $550 million in just 10 days — and it got me thinking: video game movies have actually come a long way. DreamWorks Animation Dates ‘Forgotten Island’ For Fall 2026
Image
Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation have dated the original animated feature Forgotten Island for Sept. 25, 2026. Pic is directed and written by Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado.

Details are being kept secret, but the project is billed as a broad party comedy adventure that transports its characters to a long-forgotten, magical island rooted in Philippine mythology. The film will also mark the directorial debut for Mercado, who also served as co-director on Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and head of story for Crawford on The Croods: A New Age.

Forgotten Island will be produced by Crawford’s longtime collaborator Mark Swift. Most recently, the pair received Academy Award, BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations for the critically acclaimed 2022 film Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. Forgotten Island marks their third collaboration.
