Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Review
Image
Somewhere out there is a man, a singular force of nature upon whom rests the sole responsibility for keeping the entire world from tearing itself to shreds through willpower, an unerring belief in the natural grace of humanity and a supreme willingness to hurl himself from great heights armed with nothing but a smile and the understanding that… somehow… all of this will get figured out in the end.

He could be Ethan Hunt, super spy extraordinaire, tasked with regularly saving the world from secret menaces that could obliterate it with nothing but wits and hope and a laundry list of insane stunts to become, as one character once put it, “the literal manifestation of destiny.”

Or he could be Tom Cruise, the actor and producer who has been playing Hunt for the better part of 30 years trying to save the world of filmmaking from the menaces which could it obliterate it,...

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Review: Tom Cruise Tries To Save The World In This Messy, Intense Sequel
Image
Few modern blockbuster franchises have been as thrilling as "Mission: Impossible." What began as an excellent summer thriller with Brian De Palma's crackerjack "Mission: Impossible" in 1996 evolved into something bigger with each subsequent sequel. Over time, the series became a seemingly unstoppable machine buoyed by the presence of Tom Cruise, a preternatural performer willing to risk life and limb for our entertainment. The "Mission" films weren't just action-adventures — they were stunt showcases, where Cruise, as superspy Ethan Hunt, would continually do his own dangerous stunt work. The results spoke for themselves: in an era where big studio movies have become awash in digital artifice, the "Mission: Impossible" movies were doing something real. Tom Cruise wasn't safe on some studio set in front of a greenscreen, damn it! He was really hanging off the tallest building in the world!

I am an unabashed fan of this series, and I maintain...

‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’ Review: A Tribute to Tom Cruise by Tom Cruise
Image
It never occurred to me while I was watching “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” that when Alec Baldwin declared Tom Cruise — I’m sorry, I mean “Ethan Hunt” — to be “the living manifestation of destiny” that I was watching something subtle. But compared to the endless procession of Cruise-aggrandizing speeches in “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” that’s exactly what it was.

These “Mission: Impossible” movies have always been odd ducks as far as movie franchising goes. The original film introduced a team of memorable characters, just like the show, but killed them off immediately, including the series’ only consistent hero, Jim Phelps. It then declared Jim Phelps to be the real villain, and made a hitherto unknown new character the star. Try getting away with that in a Batman movie sometime and see how far it gets you. All the Bat-Persons and Robins die immediately, some new...

‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’ Review: The Sky’s The Limit In Ethan Hunt’s ‘Last’ Adventure – Cannes Film Festival
Image
When the idea was first mooted at the back-end of the 20th century, making a big-screen adaptation of the hit 1966-73 show Mission: Impossible smacked of studio IP-grab desperation, the kind of lazy thinking that, at around the same time, gave us The Saint (1997), a film now best forgotten and humbly described on Rotten Tomatoes as merely “watchable,” mostly by fans of the late, great Val Kilmer. Production troubles on that first M:i were legendary, since it went into production without a script that anyone could agree on and, more perplexingly, starred Tom Cruise at a time when his stock was rising as a movie star in serious, glossy Oscar-winning movies, not pulpy American TV reboots.

Thirty years later and here we are: Tom Cruise is the biggest Hollywood movie star in the world bar none, the M:i franchise has beaten its primetime namesake’s seven-year winning streak three times over,...

Tom Cruise Hints at Life After ‘Mission’ as He Whips Cannes Into a Frenzy at ‘Final Reckoning’ Premiere
Image
As the world’s leading movie star, Tom Cruise accomplished a pretty easy mission by touching down at the Cannes Film Festival Wednesday night and whipping the city into a frenzy ahead of the Palais premiere of Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning.

Joined by his close friend and franchise collaborator, filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie, Cruise walked the red carpet after signing a slew of autographs and posing for selfies with fans lining the barricades on the Croisette. Fans held Cruise memorabilia, from posters of The Last Samurai to a DVD of Mission: Impossible II. One fan set up a shrine to Val Kilmer, the late co-star of Cruise’s Top Gun.

Cruise and the cast arrived to a musical group performing the famous Mission: Impossible theme. They walked up the carpet, with orchestra players positioned up the red carpet steps of the Palais. McQuarrie took numerous selfies with the cast on an otherwise phone-free carpet.

Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible (1996)
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (2025) Movie Review: A Bloated, yet Heartfelt Closure to an Iconic Action Saga
Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible (1996)
It’s safe to say that the “Mission: Impossible” franchise is the most consistent recurring saga in Hollywood’s recent history, as nearly every installment in the series contains the type of creative storytelling, stylistic flourishes, and inventive spectacle that most blockbusters are devoid of. While John Woo’s “Mission: Impossible II” stood as the only real failure in the series, the franchise took on a more serialized format with the fifth entry, “Mission: Impossible- Rogue Nation,” the first of which to be directed by Christopher McQuarrie. By deepening the character arcs and adding more insight into the psychology of Ethan Hunt, McQuarrie was able to heighten the stakes with each subsequent entry, with the final two installments serving as a grandiose sendoff to the series that began in 1996.

“Mission: Impossible- The Final Reckoning” may have originally been intended to be “Part Two” of 2023’s “Mission: Impossible- Dead Reckoning,” as...

Tom Cruise On Every Mission: Impossible Movie’s Best Action Moment
Image
In every Mission: Impossible movie, there’s a moment where you gasp. Several, most likely. And the majority of those moments involve Tom Cruise himself pulling off some ludicrously dangerous-looking feat, all in the name of our entertainment – creating iconic images and breathtaking sequences that have made Mission one of the most mind-blowing action franchises around. In the run-up to Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Empire spoke to Cruise himself, who looked back on his memories of shooting every single Mission so far, bringing those astonishing moments to life.

This article was originally published in the April 2025 issue of Empire.

Mission: Impossible

(1996, Brian De Palma)

The Langley Heist

For some, it’s still the signature sequence of the Mission: Impossible series, even though it doesn't involve a life-threatening stunt. Ethan Hunt infiltrates the CIA headquarters at Langley, to retrieve vital information from a high-tech, temperature-controlled computer vault that is seemingly impossible to access.

Image
Netflix might have gained popularity as a studio with popular series like Stranger Things, Wednesday, and Bridgerton, but the streamer has also focused on giving a platform to foreign titles. After Squid Game's undeniable success, Netflix further branched out with many new foreign films and TV shows that were extremely popular online.

Netflix non-English language movies have received millions of views in the past year, with Under Paris reaching the top of the charts, and being joined in the Top 10 list by this year's French action movie Ad Vitam and Mexican military film Counterattack. It also found success with titles like Revelations, the Swedish limited series The Glass Dome and the Dutch thriller iHostage. Now, the bilingual German-English action thriller Exterritorial beat Tom Hardy's Havoc to the top of the charts after just one day on the platform, per FlixPatrol.

Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning Tracking For Franchise-Best Opening; Plus Popcorn Bucket & New Photos
Image
With a few weeks to go, the first tracking data for Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning is out and it seems as though his ace Imf agent Ethan Hunt is gearing up to go out with a bang.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, The Final Reckoning is currently looking at an opening in the $72 million to $88 million range, with box office pundits targeting a $80 million domestic launch over the course of the four-day Memorial Day holiday weekend, which would be a franchise-best, topping the $61.2 million three-day launch for Mission: Impossible - Fallout in 2018.

Meanwhile, Disney's Lilo & Stitch is expected to open around $120 million over the four-day holiday, with projections expecting something in the $110 million to $130 million range, so based on these early estimates, it seems like we're in for one of the biggest movie weekends since 2023's Barbenheimer.

If the tracking holds, and if buzz continues...

Havoc, John Woo, and how action cinema crosses cultures and continents
Image
The action cinema of John Wick, Havoc and John Woo’s The Killer has constantly evolved as it’s travelled between filmmakers and eras.

Now on Netflix, writer-director Gareth Evans’ Havoc is an ultra-violent stew of influences. It’s set in a benighted US city, but was shot in Wales; its bullet-strewn action is directly inspired by Hong Kong filmmaker John Woo.

Then again, action cinema has always been a particularly international genre, taking in disparate bits of American westerns, low-key French thrillers and more besides. When John Woo directed A Better Tomorrow, released in 1986, its contemporary gangland setting and ferocious shoot-outs changed the look and feel of action cinema forever. Widely credited with inventing what was later dubbed the ‘heroic bloodshed’ genre, it made a star out of its lead, Chow Yun-fat.

Woo continued to hone his signature style – slow-motion photography, close-quarters action, and his characters’ habit of holding...

‘A Minecraft Movie’ Just Overtook Several Major Action Films at the Global Box Office
Image
Having topped the box office charts every day since its release, A Minecraft Movie has already passed the half-billion mark globally. It's set to enter its third week in theaters worldwide as a bona fide blockbuster. Not only is it the biggest Hollywood release of the year, A Minecraft Movie has now out-grossed a trio of landmark blockbuster films from around two decades ago. Warner Bros. can now heave a sigh of relief after a concerning start to the year, and can brag that A Minecraft Movie has made more at the global box office than Michael Bay's classic Armageddon, which debuted in 1998.

Armageddon grossed $554 million worldwide in its theatrical run, and has since developed a reputation as one of the most beloved (if divisive) big-budget spectacles of the 1990s. With $564 million in the bank so far, A Minecraft Movie has also overtaken the $550 million lifetime global haul of Mission: Impossible 2,...

Mission: Impossible 8 Could Break a Major Franchise Record During Its Opening Weekend
Image
Moviegoers are ready to flock to the theaters to see Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. The upcoming action sequel, which could be Tom Cruise's final for the franchise, has just made a splash on the long-range box office tracking website Quorum.

According to Quorum (via Deadline), The Final Reckoning is set to gross "well north of 2018's Mission: Impossible – Fallout's $61 million," which would be a record three-day opening for the long-running action franchise. If this tracking holds, it would mark a major comeback for the Mission: Impossible franchise after its last installment, 2023's Dead Reckoning, underperformed at the box office, largely due to opening in theaters just before the global sensation Barbenheimer.

Dead Reckoning opened with $54.7 million domestically, a noticeable drop from the $61 million that Fallout made back in 2018. The 2023 movie, the first of a two-part story, currently has the fourth-best opening for the franchise, with...

'Mission: Impossible 8' Will Break Franchise's Opening Weekend Record
Image
The objective movie lovers face, should they choose to accept it, is to fill up theaters across the globe when Tom Cruise returns to cinemas this May in the highly anticipated Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning. Fans appear to be heeding the call, too, if the film’s long-range box office forecast is to be trusted. According to the figures provided by Quorum, director Christopher McQuarrie’s (McQ) latest collaboration with Cruise is eyeing a $100 million opening domestically (three-day), which would mark a record-setting debut for the franchise.

The Final Reckoning will likely do much more than its $100 million forecast predicts, given that the film will have an extra day over the Memorial Day Weekend to draw in sizable audiences, especially if this turns out to be Cruise’s final appearance as Imf agent Ethan Hunt. As far as the franchise goes, none of the other Mission: Impossible entries...

Here’s How Much Tom Cruise Earned for His Severely Underrated Movie “Vanilla Sky”
Image
Vanilla Sky is Cameron Crowe’s divisive remake of Abre los Ojos (Open Your Eyes). A fascinating, nonetheless, heavy film – packed with s*x, violence, and mad amounts of drinking – it asks us a big question: Would you choose a perfect dream over an imperfect reality? The journey to that answer, however, is anything but easy.

Released when Hollywood was still willing to take creative risks in a way that we don’t see pan out today, much like Tom Cruise in this instance, Vanilla Sky feels like a jolt – a relic of a time long gone.

More than twenty years after its release, let’s look into how the film came to life, the paycheck Cruise took home, and why Vanilla Sky continues to resonate decades later, even though critics felt otherwise when it first came out.

"We've Filmed It a Couple of Different Ways": 'Outlander's Caitríona Balfe Doesn't Know How the Series Ends Even After Filming It [Exclusive]
Image
The final season of Outlander just got a colossal update from one of its leading stars. Outlander follows Claire Beauchamp Randall (Caitríona Balfe), a WWII nurse who goes back in time to Scotland in 1743. She meets the dashing Highland warrior Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and falls for him while also landing in the middle of an epic rebellion. Starz confirmed more than two years ago that Outlander would end with Season 8, and the final season even wrapped filming back in September 2024, but it’s still lacking an official premiere date. Caitríona Balfe recently sat down for a chat with Collider’s Steve Weintraub to talk about her upcoming action movie, The Amateur, and she teased an emotional season finale:

“Wrapping Outlander was very emotional. Everybody came to set, which was just very weird because they gave Sam [Heughan] and I a seven-page scene that was just full of dialogue to finish on,...

James Mangold Debunked the Biggest Myth About Tom Cruise’s Stunts That Defy Death Itself
Image
Does Tom Cruise have a death wish—or just a serious addiction to adrenaline? Honestly, the man’s not far off from being a real-life action figure. In an era where Hollywood keeps cranking out lazy sequels and IP cash grabs faster than you can say “box office flop,” Cruise is still out here treating blockbuster cinema like it’s an Olympic sport.

In the next chapter of the Mission: Impossible saga, our favorite Hollywood daredevil is back at it—this time literally hanging off a plane like it’s just another Tuesday. And if you think that’s wild, buckle up.

Netflix's New Devil May Cry Anime Hit Is Inspired by Early 2000s Blockbusters
Image
Devil May Cry's Dante is a creature of the 2000s, and creator Adi Shankar has made sure his new anime series maintains that time period connection.

"I wanted the show to be really dark, very noir, a lot of shadows, like every '90s anime that went too hard," Shankar told Animation Magazine about developing the Netflix series, partnering with South Korea's Studio Mir to bring this new chapter in Dante's demon-hunting world to life. His desired story, however, "didn't really fit that vibe, because I was wanting to tell a story that was very inspired by early-2000s Hollywood blockbusters, before everything started getting preachy and watered-down. Like Mission: Impossible 2, John Woo movies, Replacement Killers, Equilibrium. The overall mood and vibe that I had in my mind was in conflict with the type of story I wanted to tell, so I had to table that for later.

Ron Howard’s paradise thriller, Eden, gets picked up by Vertical for a summer release
Image
Being on an island with Vanessa Kirby, Sydney Sweeney and Ana de Armas? It really must be Eden! Deadline has reported that Ron Howard’s newest thriller will now be a summer movie release. The film was acquired by the studio Vertical for domestic distribution and they are looking to cap off the summer by premiering the movie on August 22.

Howard said in a statement, “Thanks to our partners at AGC Studios, Vertical, and our amazing team at Imagine Entertainment, I’m thrilled to be able to share Eden with audiences in the U.S. This story has been a passion project for me for years, rooted in the incredible true events of three wildly different groups of people who chose to leave modern society behind and recreate themselves on an uninhabited island in the Galapagos. The complexity of the characters and the collision of personalities that resulted are what drew me in,...

Limp Bizkit’s Lawsuit Against Universal Music Rollin’ Ahead As Band Seeks $200M In Royalties
Image
Fred Durst and Limp Bizkit weren’t doing it all for the nookie — they wanted their money also.

The $200 million lawsuit filed by the band over unpaid royalties is rollin’ forward after a judge ruled against Universal Music Group’s motion to dismiss. Filed in October in L.A.’s Central District, the suit says that as of April 2024, the plaintiffs “had not seen a dime in royalties on any Limp Bizkit assets.”

The complaint also accuses Umg of having a “fraudulent” system in place “to conceal artists’ royalties and keep those profits for itself.”

In his 17-page ruling this week (read it here), Judge Percy Anderson wrote: “The Court denies the Motion to Dismiss challenging the sufficiency of the copyright claims. Defendant shall file its Answer to the copyright claims asserted in the 1st AC by no later than April 7, 2025.”

The lawsuit by Durst and the nü metal band...

“I knew I was Irish”: Tom Cruise Found Out His Family Tree Dates Back to 12th Century
Image
Ah, the joys of uncovering your roots—it’s like cracking open a family-sized tin of treasure. Tom Cruise, the Hollywood heartthrob, had one of those moments in Dublin that would make any genealogist break into a celebratory gig.

Here’s the thing: most of us can trace our roots a few generations back, but for Tom Cruise, his family history took a major turn when he uncovered that his Irish ancestry stretches all the way back to the 12th century. Now, that’s what you call a mic-drop moment. And while his Irish accent in Far and Away was a bit of a head-scratcher, this discovery of his roots was the kind of ‘Hollywood twist’ even the Top Gun star couldn’t have scripted better.

Warner Bros Said Thank You to Tom Cruise Even If He Won’t Betray Paramount For a Big Fat Cheque
Image
For decades, Tom Cruise has been the ultimate Hollywood daredevil—jumping off cliffs in Mission: Impossible and pulling off jaw-dropping stunts at the box office. Well, this seems to be the reason why studios have been vying for his attention like fans at red-carpet events. Take for example when Warner Bros. went out of their way to thank Cruise, even when he vowed his loyalty to Paramount.

Now surprisingly, that gratitude call quickly turned into a secret meeting, which led to a shiny new deal. Meanwhile, Paramount, his longtime Hollywood home, wasn’t in the loop of that meeting where Tom Cruise turned Warner Bros. into his new (non-exclusive) playground. But here’s the twist—he’s not ditching Paramount just yet. Talk about Mission: Diplomatic!

Paparazzi have always been a controversial topic in Hollywood, often slammed for their aggressive and intrusive tactics. But despite the criticism, they still very much remain a crucial part of the entertainment ecosystem, making sure that both the industry and its stars stay in the public eye, because at the end of the day, it is a business after all.

Therefore, it is no secret that all celebrities have a market value attached to their name, with their photos fetching different prices based on their relevance at the time. Some might despise the constant camera flashes, but others understand that visibility is part of the game.

Why Oscar-Winning Composer Hans Zimmer Turned Down Marvel
Image
German composer Hans Zimmer began his career playing keyboards for various New Wave bands around Europe. He played with Krakatoa in his native Germany, with The Buggles (of "Video Killed the Radio Star" fame) in England, with Krisma in Italy, and with Mecano in Spain. In the early '80s, he started to produce pop singles as well, overseeing "History of the World, Part 1" for the punk band The Damned. About the same time, he started to write commercial jingles and TV theme tunes, effectively giving him an "in" into film-scoring work. His first film as a composer was 1982's "Moonlighting," one of Jerzy Skolimowski's movies.

For there, Zimmer's output increased exponentially, and he brought his unique, sweeping sensibilities (but with a pinch of New Wave) to over 20 features. He scored Stephen Frears' "My Beautiful Laundrette," (soon to be remade) and Bernard Rose's underrated "Paperhouse." In 1988, he...

When Thandie Newton Opened Up About Her Experience Kissing Tom Cruise In Mission: Impossible 2
Image
Did Thandie Newton have difficulty kissing Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible 2? (Photo Credit – Instagram/Facebook)

In 2000, Thandie Newton played Nyah Nordoff-Hall, a master thief who became Ethan Hunt’s love interest. The sequel was a box office hit but was not so dreamy behind the scenes. Newton later admitted that locking lips with Tom Cruise was anything but glamorous.

Her discomfort wasn’t just about the kiss. In a 2000 Guardian interview, she peeled back the curtain on on-screen intimacy. Between the scrutiny of dozens of crew members and the pressure to make everything look perfect, romance became technical. She said,

“Well, to take away the mystery and magic of what you see in the movie: you’re lying there, you’ve got 30 people around you, prodding all bits of you to ensure that certain things aren’t being seen and others look good. Even when you’re kissing, you...

“I never looked at it as a sequel”: Tom Cruise Refused to Admit His $546 Million Blockbuster Was a Sequel Despite Obvious Signs
Image
By literary definition, a movie that features the same lead character while continuing the same plot and theme from the first film is considered a sequel. But if you explain this to Tom Cruise, he might refuse to admit it, much like he declined to call Mission: Impossible 2 a sequel to his 1996 movie.

According to Tom Cruise’s interview with Vanity Fair, his $546M blockbuster Mission: Impossible 2 is just a different movie with the same guy doing more impossible things. Kind of like saying your second slice of pizza isn’t really part of the whole thing, just because you’ve added a bit of ketchup to it.

Tom Cruise Was Injured While Filming Mission: Impossible 2's Scariest Stunt
Image
John Woo's 2000 film "Mission: Impossible 2" is handily the worst film in the "Mission: Impossible" film series. Its drama is turgid and unconvincing, the romance between Tom Cruise and Thandiwe Newton is only briefly convincing, and the villain, played by Dougray Scott, is generic to the point of being noncorporeal. Woo's ordinarily vivacious and balletic gun violence is supplanted by instantly-dated, "You Wouldn't Steal a Handbag"-style hyper-edited violence, something that feels like a remnant of a now-forgotten era of MTV. The film tried to turn Ethan Hunt from a steely company man into a flippant, sexy, American James Bond. It didn't really work.

The most memorable part of the movie is, like in most of the "Mission: Impossible" movies, the stunts that Cruise performed himself. Woo's film opens with super-spy Ethan Hunt (Cruise) enjoying a rare vacation by himself. He is seen rock climbing on the various rock...
