Some actors are just born to play action stars, and Jason Statham is one of them. For the better part of the 2000s, the celebrity was responsible for the resurgence of the tough, no-holes barred action hero in films like The Transporter, The Italian Job, The Mechanic, and many more.

Thanks to his extensive martial arts training, these roles became second nature to him. Interestingly, Statham also had the opportunity to become a serious sportsman in Hollywood when he took up diving professionally. While the star even represented Britain as part of the national team, his greatest disappointment was narrowly missing the golden chance to participate at the Olympics.

Since it takes years for one to actually make it into the film industry, actors famously take jobs outside of their interests while they audition for the next big role. Interestingly enough, Statham’s career before acting was not a side gig, but something he took very seriously. Before starring in mega-hit films, the actor was a professional diver.

The path to being a Hollywood elite isn’t an easy one, and even more so for those who’ve had to build a name for themselves from scratch, like Jason Statham.

The English actor might be considered no less than an action icon in the industry today, but it took him years of toiling away to earn the reputation he now has. That includes a few odd jobs here and there before esteemed filmmaker Guy Ritchie discovered him, and the rest is history.

Filmmaker Guy Ritchie is known for his diverse portfolio, spanning action thrillers, spy tales, and period mysteries over his extensive career. However, the distinct approach is not limited to the movie genres only, as seen in his approach to crafting the script for his debut feature, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

Spoiler alert: the film is not "Swept Away."
Given the filmmaking tear that Guy Ritchie has been on of late, the notion of scribbling out screenplays on napkins isn't terribly wild. Since 2021, he's plopped four movies in theaters, with a fifth on the way in 2025. Okay, guys like Steven Spielberg and Woody Allen have worked at a similarly furious clip for stretches of their careers, but Ritchie's flurry of films is peculiar because they're the kinds of star-studded B-movies that Hollywood doesn't make anymore. And he seems to be having a ball making them ... though audiences aren't exactly turning out in droves to watch them.
While Ritchie, like the vast majority of screenwriters, prefers to bang out his scripts on a computer, there was a time when he employed a less conventional approach. He wasn't as prolific at this point of his career, and there was a very good reason for this.

In “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare,” British Prime Minister Winston Churchill authorizes an illicit mission to undermine Hitler’s fleet of German U-boats during World War II. The plan calls for renegades with little respect for the rules, led by a cocky ex-criminal named Gus March-Phillipps (Henry Cavill), who’s released from prison and called into a top-secret briefing. Oblivious to etiquette, Gus helps himself to a tall glass of Scotch whisky, steals an entire box of cigars and struts over to the desk where a priggish-looking officer sits. Gus swipes his lighter, making a fool of the uptight chap, who identifies himself as “Fleming, Ian Fleming.”
It doesn’t take an intelligence expert to put two and two together: Gus March-Phillipps would later serve as a prototype for Fleming’s James Bond character. Since “No Time to Die,” there’s been much talk about who might fill Daniel Craig’s shoes,...

The Gentlemen is the latest entry into Guy Ritchie‘s chaotic and hilarious world of crime. The Netflix series is created by Ritchie himself and it is set in the world of Ritchie’s 2019 film of the same name. It follows the story of Eddie Horniman, who unexpectedly inherits the title of Duke and his father’s whole estate. Still, he is more surprised as what he doesn’t know is that his father was in cahoots with criminals, who were growing cannabis on their estate. Eddie decides that he wants to rid his family estate of all the weed plants and criminals, but before he can do that he might have to do some criminal things himself first. The Gentlemen stars Theo James in the lead roles with Kaya Scodelario, Daniel Ings, Vinnie Jones, Ruby Sear, Joely Richardson, Giancarlo Esposito, Alexis Rodney, and Harry Goodwins starring in supporting roles.

He’s not the Juggernaut, bitch!
There was one big obstacle to getting Vinnie Jones back into character as Juggernaut in the upcoming Ryan Reynolds–Hugh Jackman film, “Deadpool & Wolverine”: That was Jones himself.
In an interview with Yahoo, the 59-year-old English actor said he’d been approached by director Shawn Levy to reprise the role of the villainous mutant he portrayed in Brett Ratner’s 2006 film “X-Men: The Last Stand.”
“It’s such a drama putting that suit on mentally and physically,” he said. “I mean it had its mental toll as well because you’re in it and you can’t do anything all day, you can only drink through a straw. So we couldn’t strike the deal for ‘Deadpool [& Wolverine.’]”
Jones, whose first substantial role was in Guy Ritchie’s “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” in 2008 can currently be seen in Ritchie’s series “The Gentlemen” on Netflix.

“Deadpool” star Karan Soni (Dopinder) told Variety this week that a ton of surprise cameos were filmed for the upcoming third installment, “Deadpool and Wolverine,” adding: “Let’s just say a lot of people traveled to London [for filming].” One actor who apparently did not make it to London was Vinnie Jones, who debuted as Juggernaut in “X-Men: The Last Stand.” Jones recently told Yahoo Movies UK that he turned down a request to reprise the character in “Deadpool and Wolverine” because getting in his Juggernaut suit isn’t the best experience.
“Funnily enough I just got asked to do ‘Deadpool,’ the new one now, and I spoke to the director and I just said it’s such a drama putting that suit on mentally and physically,” Jones said. “It had its mental toll as well because you’re in it and you can’t do anything all day, you can only drink through a straw.

‘Fountain Of Youth’: John Krasinski & Natalie Portman To Star In Guy Ritchie’s Adventure Heist Movie
And you used to think that Steven Spielberg and Ridley Scott were fast. But is any filmmaker working as quickly and diligently these days as Guy Ritchie? The “Sherlock Holmes” and “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” filmmaker has been on a crazy roll since around 2019. He released two films that year, Disney’s “Aladdin” and his own gangster flick, “The Gentleman.” The pandemic delayed him slightly, but he was back in theaters in 2021 with “Wrath of Man,” and he followed that up with two more films in 2023, the spy comedy “Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre,” and the Jake Gyllenhaal action thriller “The Covenant.” His 2024 film “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” starring Henry Cavill comes out April 19, 2024, via Lionsgate, and oh yeah, one more untitled action film starring Gyllenhaal, Cavill, and Eiza González is in the can and in post-production as we speak.

Sonny Vaccaro knows his basketball. As played with reliable conviction by Matt Damon, the head scout in Nike’s dwindling hoops division has a keen eye for the next great players, attending high school all-star tournaments around the country and scanning for potential endorsements. But Sonny is also a gambler, and on the tail end of his trips he jets over to Las Vegas to lock in a couple parlays, betting on NBA money lines and spreads before throwing all his winnings away at the craps table a minute later. You get the sense this has become his beleaguered ritual. At some point those basketball instincts and his penchant to go for broke will align and finally pay off.

Guy Ritchie announced in a new interview with Newsweek that he is no longer using real guns on his film sets following the October 2021 “Rust” shooting, in which cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed by a prop gun filled with real bullets. Ritchie is a veteran of the action movie genre, with the majority of his films prominently featuring firearms and bombastic shootouts. His latest directorial effort, “The Covenant,” was filmed with Airsoft pellet weapons in place of real guns.
“The Covenant” stars Jake Gyllenhaal as U.S. Army sergeant John Kinley, who returns to Afghanistan in an effort to rescue an interpreter named Ahmed (Dar Salim) from the Taliban. The two men became close years earlier when Ahmed served as John’s interpreter during the height of the War in Agahnistan. Decades after he first broke out with “Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels,” film fans probably think they know what a Guy Ritchie film is going to look and feel like. Well, when you bring Jake Gyllenhaal into the equation, Ritchie throws all of those preconceived notions out of the window, and you end up with “The Covenant,” a no-nonsense war film about a life-altering debt and the lengths someone will go to shed a curse, of sorts.

What can one say about the career of Guy Ritchie? The guy was nearly as essential to the rejuvenation of the British film scene in the ’90s as Danny Boyle. His feature debut Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels and immediate follow-up Snatch endure in the cultural parlance to this day. What followed was a series of unfortunate events. A misbegotten Swept Away remake starring then-wife Madonna. An underseen, overambitious existential gangster epic starring Jason Statham (Revolver). Then a “comeback” movie (RocknRolla) that underwhelmed. Cue a successful rescue by Robert Downey Jr. and Arthur Conan Doyle. Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes films were hits that brought him back into the Hollywood fold. Nowadays the filmmaker is an elder-statesman-of-sorts: equal parts independent director and company man, he offers up an Aladdin for every Wrath of Man.

For 25 years, I have never been much of a Guy Ritchie fan. I found the in-your-face-and-over-the-top crime dramas that made his reputation — “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels,” “Snatch,” “Revolver,” and “RocknRolla” — to be empty-flashy exercises in the too-muchness of genre kinetics, overly infatuated with their post-Tarantino cutthroat cool. It was clear that Ritchie had talent, but the way just about every shot in his movies was designed to remind you of that turned the films into layer cakes that were more frosting than cake. After a while, he dropped the badass glitz and settled into a more conventional career, and some of those movies were okay. I confess that I enjoyed his remake of “Swept Away”, and he had fun applying what was left of his high-froth Add style to the Robert Downey Jr. “Sherlock Holmes” franchise. Yet I could never escape the feeling that Guy Ritchie had...

With its list of new releases for March 2023, Amazon Prime Video might be rolling out its most impressive monthly lineup yet.
We know that sounds like something straight out of a press release but in this case, it’s actually true! Prime Video, bless it, has some excellent original titles like The Boys and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, but its monthly release updates have often been less inspiring than its TV peers. That’s certainly not the case with March 2023 though.
Prime Video gets its streaming party started early by premiering the first three episodes of Daisy Jones & The Six on March 3. This series, based on a book of the same name, tells the fictional Behind the Music-esque story of an equally fictional band. Then, on March 17, Amazon’s partnership with Donald Glover bears its first fruit with the series about obsessive fandom called Swarm. Reggie Jackson documentary Reggie premieres...

March is still winter, no matter which animal you ask, which means it’s still completely acceptable to cancel all plans and curl up under a blanket in front of the TV. Prime Video’s movie library updates throughout the month, with most of its new additions on March 1 — including the “Rocky” saga, multiple “Carrie” adaptations, “12 Angry Men,” and more.
For Prime users who love books and TV, March means the highly-anticipated premiere of “Daisy Jones & the Six,” based on the best-selling novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid. The eponymous Daisy (Riley Keough) and Billy Dunne’s band (Sam Claflin) make a mean match, starting with a hit single and leading to what seems like endless fame and glory. But where there is success there is peril, and both the band’s rise and an electric connection with Daisy threaten Billy’s marriage and everyone’s personal lives. James Ponsoldt,...

Aubrey Plaza isn’t Jason Statham’s best employee in Guy Ritchie’s latest spy action movie.
“Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre” follows super spy Orson Fortune (Statham) who is tasked with tracking down a billionaire arms broker (Hugh Grant) who is behind deadly new weapon technology. Orson enlists the help of international operatives, played by Aubrey Plaza, Cary Elwes, Bugzy Malone, plus movie star Danny Francesco (Josh Hartnett) to save the world.
Lionsgate is set to release the Miramax film in theaters, directed by Ritchie and co-written by Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies. Ritchie, Atkinson, and Bill Block produce “Operation Fortune,” which marks Miramax’s third film collaboration with Ritchie behind “The Gentleman” and “Wrath of Man.” Lionsgate is also set to distribute Ritchie’s upcoming “Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” film.

Directed by Guy Ritchie, the action comedy film Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre was filmed in 2021 and boasts a cast that includes Jason Statham, Hugh Grant, Aubrey Plaza, Cary Elwes, Bugzy Malone, and Josh Hartnett. And getting U.S. distribution for this film is proving to be unexpectedly difficult. Tired of waiting for the U.S. side of things to get worked out, international distributors have gone ahead and released Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre to theatres in some countries this week, with the premiere taking place in Dubai last night.
Operation Fortune was originally supposed to receive a theatrical release from STX Entertainment in January of last year. But it was delayed while STX merged with Eros International plc., and was later bought out by Najafi Companies – after Lionsgate considered buying the company, but then dropped out of the running. Lionsgate had also considered releasing Operation Fortune in U.

“Snatch” and “Sherlock Holmes” director Guy Ritchie picked up the Gold Yusr Honorary Award for his contribution to cinema at the Red Sea Film Festival in Jeddah. “They’re a funny thing, awards,” Ritchie tells Variety the morning after the awards ceremony that opened the festival. “It’s best to be grateful about them. Methinks.”
Ritchie first burst onto the British cinema scene with the Cool Britannia crime caper “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” (1998) almost a quarter of a century ago. It was a debut that was helped along by some high-powered fans, Ritchie told a sold out audience at his In Conversation masterclass, telling how A-listers like Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt championed the film. Pitt went on to appear in his next film “Snatch” (2000) as an incomprehensible bare-knuckle fighter, a decision – Ritchie explained to the audience – made because they were worried about Pitt’s accent.

Speaking from the Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah, Guy Ritchie revealed Friday that his thriller “The Interpreter” is now titled “The Covenant.”
“Names, as it transpires, is about the most challenging aspect of filmmaking,” Ritchie told Variety. “The last few films I’ve done, the trickiest decision to make has been the name of the movie. As of today, it’s called ‘The Covenant.'”
The thriller sees Gyllenhaal’s army sergeant in Afghanistan rescued by his Afghan interpreter, played by Fahim Fazli, and having to traverse hostile territory towards safety. Written by Ritchie and his regular collaborators Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies, the film was completed “literally in the last few days,” said Ritchie.
It is only one of a packed lineup of projects for the “Sherlock Holmes” director. Next to shoot in February is “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.” “Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre” is also...

Guy Ritchie is keeping pretty busy these days. In addition to his role directing the live-action and somehow TikTok-inspired adaptation of Disney's "Hercules," he's also set to start production on the series spin-off of his film "The Gentlemen" for Netflix. In the 2019 film, Matthew McConaughey starred as Mickey Pearson, an American living in England who oversees a massive marijuana empire hidden in the estates of members of the British aristocracy in need of some fast cash. We called "The Gentlemen" a "stylish but empty Guy Ritchie gangster romp" in our own review of the film, but the box office success of the action-comedy crime film was enough to constitute a follow-up series. The film is set in the same world as "The Gentlemen," but as reported by Variety, promises to be a story all its own. Here's everything we know about the series so far.

The cast of The Gentlemen series is growing like a weed. See what I did there? After casting actor Theo James as the show’s star, Guy Ritchie’s Netflix series adaptation welcomes more stars to the cast. Joining James for the anticipated crime comedy are Vinnie Jones, Kaya Scodalerio, Giancarlo Esposito, Daniel Ings, Joely Richardson, and Peter Serafinowicz.
According to reports, Jones will star as Geoff Seacombe, the estate’s groundskeeper; Scodalerio will play Susie Glass, a compliment to Eddie Halstead (Theo James), who oversees Mickey Pearson’s drug business. Meanwhile, Ings will play Freddy Halstead, Eddie’s older sibling who owes dangerous people a lot of money; Richardson will play Lady Sabrina, Eddie and Freddy’s mother. Lastly, James plays the project’s lead character, Eddie Halstead, who inherits his father’s substantial estate and discovers he’s in charge of a marijuana empire owned by the notorious Mickey Pearson.

Guy Ritchie is going Zero to Hero and will direct the live-action “Hercules” movie at Disney, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Ritchie previously directed Disney’s live-action “Aladdin,” the 2019 blockbusters that surpassed 1 billion at the global box office. The “Hercules” live-action movie has “Avengers” directors Anthony and Joe Russo producing the film through their Agbo banner.
Dave Callaham (“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”) wrote the first draft of the script adapting the animated “Hercules” film, and Disney is now looking for writers for the project.

It's been 20 years now since the release of "The Transporter," the 2002 film that put Jason Statham on the map as an action movie star. Statham's breakout roles as an actor had already come in a couple of crime films, both directed by Guy Ritchie: namely, "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" and "Snatch," released in 1998 and 2000. However, those films saw Statham walking around in a trench coat, and it wasn't until he stripped off his shirt and showed off his muscles in an oil fight in "The Transporter" that he truly arrived as an action icon.

Guy Ritchie, the filmmaker behind “Snatch” and “Sherlock Holmes,” has signed with WME for representation in all areas.
Ritchie, who made his feature debut in 1998 with the gangster film “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels,” has become renowned for his unique visual style and character driven stories. He most recently shot an untitled action-thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal, which STX sold to MGM/Amazon. Ritchie serves as director and producer on the project.
Previously, the British filmmaker wrote, directed and executive produced STX’s “Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre,” which is set for release later this year. The action film stars Jason Statham and Aubrey Plaza as two spies attempting to track down and stop the sale of a dangerous new weapons technology wielded by a billionaire arms broker played by Hugh Grant. Ritchie also wrote, produced and directed MGM and Miramax’s 2021 action thriller “Wrath of Man” starring Statham.

The Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels filmmaker has inked with WME.
In the wake of making his feature directorial debut in 1998 with that gangster film, Guy Ritchie made a fast name onscreen with his kinetic, whiplash style. While he continued on to make tentpole fare for the Hollywood studios, he’s continued to return to the genre which he’s made his name in.
Recently, Ritchie shot an untitled action-thriller, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, which STX sold to MGM and Amazon. His next theatrical release, STX’s Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre, which he wrote, directed and executive produced, reps another reteam for the filmmaker with Jason Statham. That collaboration began on Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and continued in such crime action pics as Snatch, Revolver and Wrath of Man.

It’s been 23 years since director Guy Ritchie and Jason Statham kicked off their working relationship with “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” (1998), which co-starred the latter. Statham gradually evolved into the mold of yesteryear’s action antiheroes, relying on quick fists, feet, a precise trigger finger, and wisecracks to tussle his way through snappy projects, a few directed by Ritchie. After “Lock, Stock” came “Snatch” (2000), “Revolver” (2005), and, earlier this year, the pair reunited for the stylish revenge-thriller “Wrath of Man” (2021), which was a modest success. The partnership continues to bear fruit with a fifth collaboration on the way titled “Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre,” an action comedy from STXfilms.

And exhale.
The movie business is breathing a little easier after Paramount’s “A Quiet Place Part II” roared to $57 million over the Memorial Day Weekend. It’s a sign that cinemas are back after more than a year of pandemic era closures, capacity restrictions, and skittish customers.
But the public health situation is changing dramatically, at least in this country, and that’s fueling optimism among exhibitors and studios. More than 60% of U.S. adults have had a least one shot of the vaccine and there is even some research that suggests 70% of Americans could be vaccinated by the summer. Last week, AMC, Regal and Cinemark announced that they will no longer require fully vaccinated guests to wear face masks.
What makes “A Quiet Place Part II’s” results particularly notable is that they are roughly in line with what the movie was projected to make prior to the pandemic.

We’ll say this with cautious optimism: the summer movie season is…back? After the coronavirus pandemic upended the 2020 release calendar, pushing back some of the year’s most hyped films and inspiring new avenues of distribution for others, the summer of 2021 is shaping up as platform for blockbusters (from the latest “Fast and Furious” to the post-apocalyptic survival of the “A Quiet Place” installment all the way through a seventh “Conjuring” film) and rife with discoveries (including some festival hits that date all the way back to 2019).
Of course, the distribution landscape has changed radically over the past year, and not every anticipated summer movie will simply head to the multiplex. This season’s lineup includes a wide variety of viewing options that go beyond the brick and mortar theater. It’s a summer defined by options — not only in terms of what you see, but how you choose to see it.

Guy Ritchie’s “Wrath of Man” will debut in China on May 10, three days after its U.S. release. The film’s star, Jason Statham, will also hit screens in “Fast & Furious 9” less than two weeks later on May 21.
The unusual Monday release may help the battalion of 19 local blockbusters, opening over the prior Labor Day holiday weekend, keep up their box office momentum.
Produced by MGM, the film is a remake of the 2004 French movie “Cash Truck” from director Nicolas Boukhrief. It will mark Ritchie’s fourth collaboration with Statham, after “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels,” “Snatch” and “Revolver.” Statham plays H, a cash truck security guard who seeks to foil an attempted robbery and also hunt down the bad guys who murdered his son.

Theaters are opening, vaccine distribution is pouring in, and distributors are starting to reshuffle and ready their release slates for 2021 — and that includes the glut of titles bottlenecked last year, and even earlier this year, by the pandemic. One such film is director Guy Ritchie’s “Wrath of Man,” produced by MGM and Miramax, and releasing from United Artists on May 7. It’s the latest, and fourth, collaboration between the English filmmaker and action icon Jason Statham.
“Wrath of Man” is written by Ritchie, Ivan Atkinson, and Marn Davies and is a reimagining of Nicolas Boukhrief’s 2004 French heist thriller “Le Convoyeur.” The new film follows a mysterious and wild-eyed cash truck security guard (Statham), known only as H, who surprises his co-workers during a heist in which he unexpectedly unleashes precision skills. The crew is left wondering who he is and where he came from. Soon, the marksman’s...

“What we want to do is expand Marv studios beyond the typically very successful one film a year.”
Zygi Kamasa, the newly appointed group CEO of Matthew Vaughn’s London-based film and TV outfit Marv has outlined the company’s commitment to UK production and raised the possibility Marv might eventually set up its own distribution arm.
“What we want to do is expand Marv studios beyond the typically very successful one film a year,” said Kamasa. “Part of that expansion is to look at more opportunities in British film and expanding into British television.”
Marv plans to make two to four films a year.

"You guys shot the wrong man, didn't you?!" Dark Star Films has debuted a new official US trailer for the New Zealand dark comedy called Lowdown Dirty Criminals, made by filmmaker Paul Murphy (Second Hand Wedding and Love Birds). This already opened in New Zealand & Australia a few months ago, and should make its way to America sooner than later. Two wannabe gangsters find themselves in a hilariously off-kilter predicament when a botched job leaves them the target of the underworld’s finest. It's closest in tone and style to Guy Ritchie's 1998 film Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, with a Kiwi edge. The film's ensemble cast includes James Rolleston, Samuel Austin, Scott Wills, Min Kim, Cohen Holloway, Robbie Magasiva, and Rebecca Gibney as "uber gangster The Upholsterer". A crime caper that tells the tale of two naïve young men searching for a better life... through crime. Ha ha.

Jason Statham might be one of the biggest action stars in the world right now, most recently squaring off with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in the mega-blockbuster “Hobbs & Shaw.” However, years before, he was an unknown that was chosen to star in the film, “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels,” by filmmaker Guy Ritchie, who then turned the non-actor into a star.
