That Christmas begins with a familiar dilemma: It’s Christmas Eve and Santa must navigate treacherous weather while delivering his highly anticipated gifts.
We meet the benevolent legend, voiced here by Brian Cox, as he rides through a nasty winter storm of strong winds and low visibility. A terrible illness has left him with only one reindeer (Guz Khan) to pull the sleigh. Tensions between the two are so high that Santa, at one point, threatens to get a self-driving vehicle next winter. But while the odds are not in our hero’s favor, the happiness of children around the world — and especially those in the fictional English coastal town in which the narrative is set — depends on him overcoming them.
Premiering at the BFI London Film Festival, That Christmas is a charming animation from Locksmith (Ron’s Gone Wrong) that’s well-poised to become a classic. It can be...

Lifetime’s Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce-inspired holiday movie has released its first look.
Lifetime announced its full holiday schedule Tuesday, and it includes Christmas in the Spotlight, starring Jessica Lord, Laith Wallschleger, Jeannie Mai and Haley Kalil. Though the film may not be officially inspired by Swift and Kelce, the story similarity is uncanny. The film centers on a pop star named Bowyn (Lord) who hasn’t found Mr. Right, until she meets a professional football player (Wallschleger) backstage at one of her shows. After Drew publicly declares he has a crush on Bowyn, they begin dating.
“With each passing day they spend together, their feelings grow stronger … but can it last in the limelight, especially when they both have such hectic schedules? With people questioning if their feelings for each other are real or just for show, the pressure mounts from the press, paparazzi, their fans and even their family,...

George Clooney dodged a bullet by bailing on a role in one of the worst movies in Will Smith’s career. Clooney was initially cast as Artemus Gordon, one of the two protagonists, in Barry Sonnenfeld’s Wild Wild West. While the movie turned out to be bad, Clooney had essentially walked out of a film from the director of hits films like The Addams Family, Get Shorty, and Men in Black.

However, Sonnenfeld’s reputation wasn’t enough to save the film as the script had several issues and Clooney didn’t like the rewrites of the script. Once the Batman & Robin star bailed from the movie, he went on to join director David O. Russell’s Three Kings. While it was a critically acclaimed film, Clooney’s experience with the director was horrible.

Outside of established IP, there are few sure things in Hollywood filmmaking. There was a time when John Wayne astride a horse was a license to print money, ditto Clint Eastwood (who also packed 'em in whilst brandishing a shield and a hand cannon). And there was that remarkable decade-long run where Rob Reiner standing behind the camera meant guaranteed critical, if not full-on commercial success.
Hot streaks don't just happen like this, so when it looks like a shooter is heating up, studios line up to place the heaviest of bets on their next roll. Such was the case with the team of star Will Smith and director Barry Sonnenfeld after the blockbuster breakthrough of 1997's "Men in Black." This was Smith's first smash outside of an ensemble (one he almost turned down), and Sonnenfeld's fourth box office hit after "The Addams Family,...

George Clooney expressed his distaste for plastic surgeries and other invasive procedures that make a person look younger. The actor, known for his roles in Ocean’s Eleven and Gravity, remains one of the most in-demand leading men in Hollywood and he fully embraces his aging physicality.

Two of Hollywood’s biggest stars, George Clooney and Brad Pitt have teamed up to star in an upcoming action comedy titled, Wolfs. The actors would be portraying professional fixers hired to cover up a major crime, forcing the two lone wolves to work together. Several news outlets have started releasing rumors about the new movie, but one statement caused the actor himself to respond.
The movie premiered out of competition at the Venice Film Festival, and Clooney utilized the platform to address one viral rumor about the film. Referring to the absurd claim of the lead actors receiving $35 million each as salary, the Insomnia actor stated it was exaggerated. He claimed their actual pay was way less, and the rumor could cause serious harm to show business.

Director David O. Russell has faced renewed scrutiny over his reputation for unruly conduct on film sets. Actor George Clooney recently criticized Russell during an interview, calling the director a “miserable f***” and saying it was not worthwhile to work with him.
Clooney’s remarks stem from his experience filming “Three Kings” in 1999. He claims Russell verbally attacked crew members and engaged in a physical confrontation with Clooney himself. Clooney described the production as “the worst experience of my life.” However, Clooney is just one of many who have alleged improper behavior by Russell.
Numerous other actors and crew have told of Russell’s erratic conduct over two decades. According to a leaked video, Lily Tomlin was loudly berated by Russell while filming “I Heart Huckabees” in 2004. Christian Bale reportedly had to intervene on behalf of Amy Adams during “American Hustle,” as she struggled with Russell. Other incidents involved Russell...

David O. Russell is in the news again, but not for a new project. The director, who's brought audiences such eclectic films as "Spanking the Monkey," "American Hustle," and "Silver Linings Playbook," has built a reputation as one of the most chaotic filmmakers working today, and on more than one occasion, firsthand accounts have emerged alleging that the chaos tends to veer into verbal abuse -- or worse.
Russell still seems to have support in the industry: In 2022, more than two decades after the first reports of Russell's alleged on-set bullying and violence emerged, the filmmaker released "Amsterdam," a star-studded film featuring the likes of such beloved famous folks as Margot Robbie, Anya-Taylor Joy, John David Washington, Robert De Niro, Michael Shannon, Timothy Olyphant, and even Taylor Swift. The movie starred Christian Bale, a frequent Russell collaborator who extolled the virtues of the controversial filmmaker while doing press for the movie.

Throughout his many career ups-and-downs, five-time Oscar-nominated director David O. Russell has carved out a place for himself with a series of singularly eccentric, screwy films. Let’s take a look back at all eight of his films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1958, Russell made his filmmaking debut with the incest comedy “Spanking the Monkey” (1994), which won the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival and brought his Best First Feature and Best First Screenplay victories at the Independent Spirit Awards. The screwball farce “Flirting with Disaster” (1996) quickly followed, which earned him additional writing and directing bids at the Indie Spirits. He achieved a huge critical and commercial success with the Gulf War satire “Three Kings” (1999), for which he competed at the Writers Guild of America in Best Original Screenplay.

Is there anything as heartwarming as a story about a jerk in Hollywood getting their comeuppance? Perhaps a jerk in Hollywood getting his comeuppance courtesy of one of the biggest movie stars in the world. This is exactly what happened to David O. Russell when the notorious (yet somehow still regularly employed) director worked with George Clooney on the film "Three Kings" back in the late '90s.
A dark military comedy set in the aftermath of the Gulf War, "Three Kings" was the third feature film by Russell. The filmmaker also got script credit on the film's screenplay, though outlets including Entertainment Weekly reported at the time that John Ridley actually wrote it. "Three Kings" starred Clooney, Ice Cube, Mark Wahlberg, and Spike Jonze, and it received near-universal acclaim upon release. It was nominated for a Critics Choice Award and a WGA Award, and it no doubt opened doors for Russell,...

George Clooney might forever wear the dubious crown of Worst Batman, but when it comes to real-life heroics, he just might have Christian Bale beat. Clooney’s stint as the Caped Crusader was a misfire, but his off-screen actions? Pure vigilante justice. Years ago, Clooney famously called out Three Kings director David O. Russell for his abusive on-set behavior—something Bale only did behind closed doors. Clooney didn’t just protect Gotham; he stood up for the little guys in Hollywood.

George Clooney has once again voiced his disdain for working with director David O. Russell, reigniting a long-standing feud that dates back to their collaboration on the 1999 film Three Kings.
In a recent joint interview with Brad Pitt for GQ, Clooney brought up the topic unprompted while discussing time management in his career. The 62-year-old actor emphasized that spending five months on a project is significant at his age, especially if it involves working with someone like Russell.
“It’s not just about doing a good film,” Clooney said. “It’s about avoiding a miserable experience with someone making everyone’s life hell on set.”

George Clooney is reflecting on his career and revealed that he doesn’t want to work with David O. Russell again.
In a joint interview with Brad Pitt, the pair discussed “time allotment” and deciding who they want to spend time with while working.
“The older you get, time allotment is very different,” Clooney told GQ. “Five months out of your life is a lot.”
Russell is not someone Clooney would like to spend five months of his life filming with.
“And so it’s not just like, ‘Oh, I’m going to go do a really good film, like Three Kings, and I’m going to have a miserable f*** like David O Russell making my life hell. At a certain point in your life — hopefully sooner rather than later — you realize working with (or for) needlessly angry people just isn’t worth it. Life is short. That’s something George Clooney is all too aware of after he famously clashed with director David O. Russell on the set of Three Kings. In a recent GQ cover story, Clooney said he isn’t going to repeat that experience anytime soon.

Five months out of your life is a lot,” Clooney said. “And so it’s not just like, ‘Oh, I’m going to go do a really good film, like Three Kings, and I’m going to have a miserable f**k like David O Russell making my life hell. George Clooney is 63 years old and approaching things differently when it comes to acting. In a joint cover story for GQ magazine alongside his “Wolfs” co-star Brad Pitt, the Oscar winner called “time allotment” a huge deciding factor in the projects he takes on at this stage in his career. If he’s going to go away for half the year to act, then he’s not going to put himself through hell. Clooney said he only wants to work with “people who like what they do.”

They might have played brothers almost 30 years ago on the set of From Dusk Till Dawn, but it’s fair to say the sun has gone down on George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino’s camaraderie. Clooney’s shots across Tarantino’s bow are making the rounds, too, after the actor sat down with his frequent co-star Brad Pitt for a GQ cover story interview.

Acclaimed director David O. Russell has developed a reputation for alienating most of the actors in his movies. The director who once got into a fistfight with George Clooney on the set of “Three Kings” once also put Christopher Nolan in a headlock after Jude Law dropped out of Russell’s film I Heart Huckabees for a role offered by Christopher Nolan.
David O. Russell’s 2004 existential comedy I Heart Huckabees featured Dustin Hoffman and Lily Tomlin as a pair of “existential detectives” hired by various clients to explore the purpose of their pointless lives. The actors included Jude Law, among others.
Pre-production for the film was derailed after several cast members who were tapped to star in it dropped out. According to the New York Times, Gwyneth Paltrow was the first to drop out, followed by Jude Law.

Martin Scorsese’s one of those rare directors who’ve made so many masterpieces that all too many of his films wind up being underrated just because maybe they don’t quite set the world on fire when they first come out. One such film is Bringing Out the Dead, starring Nicolas Cage as a New York City paramedic on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Hyped as a kind of companion piece to Taxi Driver, with it being written by that film’s Paul Schrader, it was rather coolly received in ’99. Why? Well, let’s not forget that year is one of the strongest in recent memory, and it got a bit overshadowed by movies like Fight Club, Three Kings, Magnolia, The Matrix, Being John Malkovich and a whole bunch of others as far as the cultural zeitgeist went.
However, looking back at the movie twenty-five years later, it...

Mark Wahlberg is a Dorchester, Massachusetts native who has brought to life, in the past two decades, a wide variety of characters that have gone far beyond fighting CG robots in the “Transformers” movies.
Wahlberg got his start as a rapper, as the frontman for the group Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, but it was his good looks rather than musical ability that brought him notoriety as the premier Calvin Klein underwear model in the 1990s. From there it was a quick jump to movies, with the young actor getting his big break as the lead in Paul Thomas Anderson‘s “Boogie Nights” in 1997.
Since then Wahlberg has been working steadily with such A-list directors as Martin Scorsese, Peter Jackson (“The Lovely Bones”), Tim Burton (“Planet of the Apes”), Ridley Scott (“All the Money in the World”) and David O. Russell.

1999 was an amazing year for movies. But, among all the classics like The Matrix, Fight Club, Being John Malkovich, Magnolia, Go, Three Kings, and so many more, one that often gets overlooked is The Mummy. Originally, the summer of ’99 was supposed to be all about Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, but a few weeks before that movie opened, The Mummy turned out to be an unexpected smash for Universal Pictures, with it spawning two sequels, a spin-off movie, and (less cool), a reboot.
With the movie turning twenty-five, the film’s director Stephen Sommers, revisited the film during an extended sit-down with THR. For those who may not be aware of his career, Sommers made a whole slew of super-fun adventure movies in the 90s, including a really solid re-imagining of The Jungle Book for Disney and the creature feature Deep Rising. If you’d have to guess, you would not probably get closer to the movie that terrified George Clooney. Of course, in our heads, Batman & Robin would pop up to be the scariest movie in his career but it was far from it.
George Clooney as Batman
Certainly, Clooney would hate to talk about his disastrous 1997 DC movie playing Batman against Arnold Schwarzenegger’s supervillain Mr. Freeze. However, the decorated Hollywood actor has opened up about the movie that sent shivers down his spine.

With his victory on Monday at the Critics’ Circle Theatre awards, Andrew Scott has made history. The Irish performer, recognized as best actor for his one-man West End show, “Vanya,” previously was named best actor at the 2024 Critics’ Circle Film Awards for his performance in “All of Us Strangers.” He’s the first person to win lead actor Critics’ Circle prizes in both film and television in the same year.
“It’s a thrilling delight,” Scott says. “I’ve been involved with both film and theater ever since I started acting when I was 17 years old. I’ve always worked between the two mediums. So to have these two projects, which were very dear to me, be recognized is more than I could have wished for.”
In the case of “Vanya,” Simon Stephens’ adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s “Uncle Vanya,” Scott played all of the show’s eight roles. That was a herculean task,...

David O. Russell doesn’t have a perfect track record when it comes to dealing with people, and he certainly isn’t known as a people pleaser. Over the years, many Hollywood actors have spoken out about their experiences with the director, and George Clooney is no exception. When the two worked together on Three Kings, Clooney described the experience as “truly, without exception, the worst experience of my life.” Here’s why.

George Clooney’s Experience Working with David O. Russell
Considering David O. Russell‘s track record, the director, as he often does, managed to rub George Clooney the wrong way too. There were some instances on set that were truly unbearable for both of them, as well as for those around them in the crew, but there was one occasion where things went a bit too far.

David O. Russell is once again in the conversation for his controversial approach towards fellow Hollywood associates. And this time, a Sony executive found himself on the receiving end of a blow from the filmmaker, as reports suggest that Russell punched the executive at an Oscar party following an accidental trip over him.

It is always heartwarming to hear stories about siblings helping one another, especially in the entertainment industry, where competition can be fierce. Donnie Wahlberg, the elder brother of Hollywood star Mark Wahlberg, recently revealed that he invested around $500,000 in the Ted star’s music career in the early 1990s.
The Fear star’s music career took off thanks in part to his elder brother’s investment, which also kept the former “out of the streets”. Yes, it may come as no surprise to some that Mark Wahlberg has a lengthy and diverse résumé. And no, we are not discussing his crimes in movies. In January of 1999, two teen movies opened back to back and kicked off what would be one of the most extraordinary years for youth-oriented movies in the history of Hollywood. Both were No. 1 at the box office their first weekend. Both boasted remarkable casts of rising stars — they even shared a star in Paul Walker. And both whipped ancient genre conventions into new combinations that made them fresh and new. Yet for all their similarities, “Varsity Blues” and “She’s All That” couldn’t have been more different: one an R-rated sports drama that tempered its inspirational coming-of-age drama with surprisingly harsh depictions of misogyny and physical and mental abuse, the other a sweet, good-natured romantic comedy nearly as innocent as a Mickey Rooney-Judy Garland vehicle from the 1940s. In their similarities and differences lies the key to why 1999 was such a great year for movies of their type — the 1939 of teen movies.

The Alex Garland movie, set in the near future as the United States breaks out into violent conflict, has a runtime of 109 minutes, despite reports to the contrary. While IMDb incorrectly lists a runtime of 3 hours and 15 minutes, A24 confirmed to Variety that the film is under two hours long.
Starring Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Sonoya Mizuno, Jesse Plemons and Nick Offerman, the movie puts viewers in the heat of a new American civil war. The trailer opens with scenes of destruction across the country, along with news reports that “19 states have seceded.”

The live-action adaptation of Yu Yu Hakusho is off to a strong start on Netflix. With only five episodes under its belt, there’s still more source material for the series to adapt. Netflix has yet to renew the series for a second season, but early signs suggest a renewal could soon be coming.

The series was led by Alice in Borderland producer Kazutaka Sakamoto. Akira Morii (Assassination Classroom) served as producer on the project, and Ryo Sakaguchi (Game of Thrones) is SFX’s supervisor. Netflix’s internal studio, Scanline VFX, worked on the visual effects. Yutaka Yamada (Vinland Saga) composed the series.

Christian Bale has worked alongside controversial filmmaker David O. Russell on a couple of projects. But because of their strong personalities, the pair couldn’t help clash every now and then behind the scenes.
Christian Bale and David O. Russell were used to butting heads
Russell is known for his hot temper almost as much as he’s known for his filmmaking. The director has even thrown tantrums with the actors he’s worked with. His American Hustle co-star Amy Adams once confided that she ended up crying because of Russell’s attitude towards her. Clooney, who worked with Russell on Three Kings, also had a physical altercation with the director because of his behavior.
On occasion, he’s even found himself fighting with his frequent collaborator Christian Bale. But Bale confided their conflict only helped strengthen their projects.

Mark Wahlberg was better known for his Calvin Klein underwear ads and his Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch music career than for his acting (“Fear”) when he accepted the role of aspiring porn star Dirk Diggler in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Boogie Nights.” The 1997 drama made Wahlberg a bonafide movie star, but he wasn’t immediately sold on the role. Speaking to Cigar Aficionado magazine, Wahlberg admitted he feared “Boogie Nights” might exploit him.
“When I first heard about the film, the subject matter was not appealing to me,” Wahlberg said. “I came from the whole Marky Mark thing, pulling down my pants, Calvin Klein underwear — I didn’t know if this was just the next level of exploiting me and now all of a sudden we have to lose the underwear.”
Wahlberg continued, “My agents kept pushing me. So I read the first 25, 30 pages, and I kind of put it down.

Harmony Korine, the director of cult classics like “Spring Breakers” and “Gummo”, has teamed up with rapper Travis Scott for a new film that was shot entirely in infrared. The film, titled “Aggro Dr1ft”, is produced by A24 and will premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September 2023.
“Aggro Dr1ft” is described as an action-oriented film that stars Scott and Spanish actor Jordi Mollà, who has appeared in films like “Bad Boys II” and “Riddick”. The plot of the 80-minute film is still unknown, but the first production still released by Venice shows Scott and Mollà wearing masks, body armor, and guns in a dark and surreal setting.

Growing up in the UK in the '80s and '90s, Channel 4 was an exciting new alternative to the staid safe havens of our other three terrestrial channels. Not only did it offer daring and sometimes controversial content that the BBC and ITV wouldn't touch, it also gave an exotic taster of global sport to our screens. We were introduced to the delights of Mongolian Yak Polo and Irish hurling on "Trans World Sport," while "Gazetta Football Italia" brought us a sexy European version of soccer after the success of the World Cup in 1990.
Then there was coverage of American Football. Channel 4 hooked many British viewers with the sport in the year it went live in 1982. From that moment, NFL grew in popularity as an alternative to our hooligan-blighted national game. By the time I first tuned in to see what all the fuss was about, they were done with explaining the rules.

It’s hard to imagine that the unforgettable on-screen connection between Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper in Silver Linings Playbook, including their iconic dance sequence, was almost derailed.
The main roles in the comedy-drama were first offered to Anne Hathaway and Mark Wahlberg, who were set to play Tiffany and Pat, respectively. But after Hathaway dropped out of the project, director David O. Russell cast Cooper instead of his good friend, Wahlberg, who reportedly wanted a special clause in the event that Hathaway backed out.

Early in their careers, Mark Wahlberg and David O. Russell formed a lasting partnership, working together on numerous projects. Russell gave Wahlberg early acting roles, and in turn, Wahlberg brought Russell on board for The Fighter, a critically acclaimed film that propelled both of their careers.

Joel Schumacher was an immensely talented filmmaker whose slick visual style earned him loads of high-profile assignments during the 1980s and '90s. He could deliver the sensuous perfume commercial aesthetic of A-listers like Alan Parker, Ridley Scott, and Adrian Lyne sans the auteurist demand for total creative control. He possessed the crowd-pleasing instincts of Tony Scott. He worked with the biggest movie stars of the day: Julia Roberts, Michael Douglas, Jim Carrey, Matthew McConaughey, and Mr. T. He discovered Colin Farrell with 2000's "Tigerland." He both saved and killed the "Batman" franchise.
That Schumacher had any kind of career is something of a miracle. He survived a wild youth that included a near-fatal meth addiction, and by his own admission, thousands of sexual partners as the 1980s AIDS epidemic took hold. This experience gave him valuable insight as he landed major studio assignments packed with volatile young talent. On "St. Elmo's Fire,...
