Despite being one of the longest-running live-action sitcoms of all time, you don't hear much about "My Three Sons" anymore. The series ran for an impressive 12 seasons beginning in 1960, producing 380 episodes of wholesome sitcom scenarios during a decade of tremendous upheaval. "The real world was quite tumultuous and revolution was in the air," star Barry Livingston told CBS News in a 2009 retrospective, "and we were still eating Uncle Charley's cookies and having milk."
"My Three Sons" doesn't have the enduring legacy of more thought-provoking shows of the '60s and '70s, like "M*A*S*H" and "The Twilight Zone," nor is it typically mentioned in the same breath as all-time-great comedies like "I Love Lucy" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show." Despite the show's absence from most abridged versions of TV history, though, it still connected with audiences in its time: the series about a widower raising three sons as a...

Adding to his awards season accolades, Paul Giamatti was honored with the Cinema Vanguard Award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Wednesday, where he sat down for a conversation about his long career and journey to The Holdovers.
In a 75-minute chat moderated by The Hollywood Reporter‘s Scott Feinberg, Giamatti walked the Santa Barbara audience through his pivot from wanting to study primate anthropology to pursuing acting after his father died. He reflected on early roles in Private Parts, Planet of the Apes (“I was really disappointed I couldn’t play a gorilla. I was like, ‘I can’t be a gorilla, why not?’ They’re like, ‘You look more like an orangutan'”) and eventually American Splendor, where he said, “I remember at the time thinking, this is probably the first and last time I’m gonna lead [a movie] like this.”

Howard Stern has been one of the most controversial – and revered – figures in the history of modern media. With a passion for the field as a child, Stern’s climb to the top of the radio world truly began in the ‘80s. And he did it off of his unique, button-pressing, FCC-clashing brand and humor: the boobs, the prank calls, the Wack Pack, all of it all made Howard Stern one of the most recognizable figures in all of media. And so as his markets grew and his written word topped the charts – but long before his first $500 million contract with Sirius – it was time for Stern to enter the movie business…with something a little more commercially viable than Butt Bongo Fiesta.

One can't say much to defend the clunky script or the bad casting decisions for Tim Burton's 2001 film adaptation of Pierre Boulle's "Planet of the Apes." Not only did Burton's film alter the story of the original novel into something far less poignant, but Mark Wahlberg didn't project the "square-jawed space hero" archetype that his character was clearly written as. Estella Warren and Kris Kristofferson also didn't fare well as put-upon wilderness dwellers, coming across as dainty weekend warriors who had never been camping before.
Where Burton's film excels, however, is the ape design. The makeup effects by Rick Baker are some of the best in cinema history, looking eerily natural on the faces of previously recognizable actors. Additionally, the ape cast went through extensive movement training and their chimpanzee, gorilla, and orangutan body movements are impressive and convincing.
The ape cast also did its job with aplomb.

Porno for Pyros have shared a special new holiday tune, “Pete’s Dad,” about (as the title suggests) guitarist Peter Distefano’s father, who just beat cancer.
While the song’s pitter-patter drums and uncanny acoustic guitars occasionally veer into strange sonic spaces, “Pete’s Dad” is obviously big-hearted, tender, and even a little funny. The first verse finds frontman Perry Farrell, who is Jewish, singing about being welcomed into the Distefano’s family for Christmas, even crooning at one point, “Jews and Italians, they’re very much alike/I like Italian food.

Sam Elliott and Howard Stern might have more in common than you think: They’re both very tall, they’re both known for their distinct voices, and they were considered for the same role in Bradley Cooper‘s A Star Is Born. Cooper was a guest on Monday’s (November 27th) episode of The Howard Stern Show, and the radio host revealed that he declined playing Jackson’s older brother Bobby in the 2018 film before the part went to Elliott.
Via Billboard, the topic of A Star Is Born came up after Stern and Cooper — who are also close friends outside of the biz — discussed Cooper’s new Leonard Bernstein biopic Maestro. Stern began praising Cooper’s musical capabilities, after which the radio personality said he still gets some flack for turning down a role Cooper had offered him in A Star Is Born.

John Stamos faced the intensity of Da Bomb Beyond Insanity sauce on “Hot Ones” hosted by Sean Evans, and the “Full House” alum joked that the sauce killed his late costar Bob Saget.
“This is what killed Saget,” Stamos joked after struggling through the eighth sauce in the gauntlet. “He would do that joke if he was alive to me. He wouldn’t have waited a year and a half either. He would say the worst things.”
Saget died January 2022 of severe blunt head trauma from a fall in a Florida hotel room, though the exact circumstances of his death were never fully made public after his family won the right to keep autopsy details under seal.
Stamos recalled several memories with his “Full House” costar, including a trip to a strip club with the trio of guys — including Dave Coulier, who played Joey — where they were announced immediately upon entering the establishment.

Daniel Goldberg, the co-screenwriter of “Stripes” and producer of feature comedies like “Space Jam,” “Old School” and the “Hangover” trilogy, died Wednesday at age 74.
A frequent collaborator of directors Ivan Reitman and Todd Phillips and actor Bill Murray, who in addition to “Stripes” starred in the Goldberg co-penned “Meatballs,” Goldberg is survived by his wife, fellow Canadian film producer Ilona Herzberg, and his brother, “Deuce Bigalow” screenwriter Harris Goldberg. Per media reports, no cause of death was made public.
In a tribute for Deadline published Wednesday, Ivan Reitman’s son, filmmaker Jason Reitman, remembered Goldberg as “one of the kindest and most gentle souls I’ve ever known.”
Goldberg and Reitman first met in 1966 at McMaster University, where they went on to make several short films together (many of which starred a young “Schitt’s Creek” Emmy winner Eugene Levy) and cofounded a film society — not without kicking up some controversy,...

Director, producer and screenwriter Jason Reitman, son of director Ivan Reitman, is paying tribute to his late father’s dear friend, writer-producer Daniel Goldberg, who died today at 74. Goldberg was a writer and/or producer on several of Ivan Reitman’s films and a father figure to Jason. Here is his first-person remembrance.

Up until a few weeks ago, most people had never heard of “To Leslie,” an indie film about a woman trying to rebuild her life while battling drug addiction and alcoholism. Now, the film’s star Andrea Riseborough is nominated for the Academy Award for best actress in a leading role.
So how did such a small film end up breaking in, seemingly at the last minute? Awards pundits wrongly assumed that the celeb-backed campaign, while noteworthy, was a little too late to make a nomination happen. It came down to support from the film community, Riseborough said Tuesday.
“The idea that you need endless resources, I don’t think that’s necessarily true,” Riseborough told Variety shortly after the Oscar noms were announced Tuesday morning. “The people who made sure of that is our community. It feels like the film community rallied around and made a noise.”

Updated at 8:11 Am from 12:58 Am exclusive with Gavin Polone statement: Anna Faris has claimed that the late director Ivan Reitman inappropriately touched her on the set of their 2006 rom-com My Super Ex Girlfriend.
Speaking on her podcast Unqualified, the actress disclosed that Reitman “slapped my ass” during the production and on her first day “yelled” at her, leaving her feeling “angry, hurt and humiliated.”
During a candid conversation with actress and filmmaker Lena Dunham, Faris said: “One of my hardest film experiences was with Ivan Reitman. I mean, the idea of attempting to make a comedy under this, like, reign of terror, he was a yeller. He would bring down somebody every day…and my first day, it was me.”
During a wide-ranging discussion with Dunham about different behaviors on set, Faris said that she had to fight back tears during her turbulent first interaction with Reitman, who died in February,...

When Ivan Reitman passed away on Feb. 12, 2022 at the age of 75, the Canadian producer, director, and screenwriter was justifiably remembered as one of the driving forces of cinematic comedy for more than four decades. After all, he produced National Lampoon’s Animal House–one of the classic farces of its time–in 1978, before moving on to direct a string of other well-remembered entries in the genre, including Meatballs (1979), Stripes (1981), Twins (1988), Kindergarten Cop (1990), and Dave (1993), while producing films such as Space Jam (1996), Private Parts (1997), and Old School (2003).
Of course Reitman is best remembered for directing Ghostbusters, the seminal 1984 film that spawned a franchise and has influenced an entire subgenre, the horror comedy, ever since its release.
Ghostbusters wasn’t Reitman’s only foray into horror territory, however. His second feature film as a director was a low-budget horror comedy called Cannibal Girls (released in 1973 and starring Eugene Levy and Andrea Martin!

Chicago – He helmed some of the most beloved comedies of the last three decades of the 20th Century, including “Meatballs,” “Stripes,” “Twins” “Kindergarten Cop” and of course “Ghostbusters” (and its sequel). Ivan Reitman passed away on February 12th, 2022. He was age 75.
Reitman was born in Czechoslovakia, and moved with his family to Canada as a child. He graduated from McMasters University (Ontario) with a degree in music, but he also produced and directed several short films while there. After working in television and as a producer for stage he moved into film production. After producing a couple films for director David Cronenberg, he caught his big break as the producer of “Animal House” in 1978.

Most kids wouldn’t want to endure high school twice, although there are some who would no doubt prefer to remain there forever. Brandon Lee chose a third path by re-enrolling when he was 32 years old and getting away with it, at least for a while. How it all happened is whimsically recounted in My Old School, a clever, amusing and rather slight account of a Scottish misfit’s most irregular education. Or, as Woody Allen used to describe himself, it’s “thin but fun.”

Trailblazing director Betty Thomas will receive the DGA’s prestigious Robert B. Aldrich Award for her “extraordinary service to the guild and its members” at the 73rd Annual DGA Awards.
Veteran Upm Brian E. Frankish and longtime CBS operations’ associate director Joyce Thomas will receive special awards for their service to the guild and the industry. The awards show will be held on April 10, but the DGA isn’t saying yet whether it will be virtual or not.
All three recipients have long histories of service to the guild. Betty Thomas serves as the DGA’s secretary-treasurer – the guild’s second-highest elected officer.
“Betty means so much to our guild,” said DGA president Thomas Schlamme. “No matter how busy she’s been throughout her remarkable, ceiling-shattering directing career, she’s always placed service to her fellow members among her highest priorities, fighting for their creative and economic rights. And from the very beginning,...

Mary McCormack is returning to the small screen.
Starz today announced the beloved actress has been cast in the role of Willie in the series Heels.
McCormack’s character is the business partner of Jack Spade (played by Stephen Amell in the series) and logistical brains behind the local wrestling organization who came up in the glory days as Wild Bill’s (Chris Bauer) valet, but grew tired of babysitting and left him just as his career took off.
His return to the local circuit complicates her life, as does the reflection of her younger self that she sees in Crystal (Kelli Berglund).
McCormack is widely known for her four seasons as a regular cast member of The West Wing, as the lead of the critically acclaimed In Plain Sight and for her role opposite Howard Stern in Private Parts.

With readers turning to their home viewing options more than ever, this daily feature provides one new movie each day worth checking out on a major streaming platform.
Long before the immediacy of the internet and its attendant social media platforms, impotent rage and loose-lipped hatred had another home in America: talk radio. While the form itself isn’t dead — look no further than the continued popularity of everyone from Howard Stern to Glenn Beck — the world has many other more enticing outlets for emotional release. But the underlying desire for unfettered, rage-fueled outbursts remains, and Oliver Stone’s searing 1988 drama “Talk Radio” (sandwiched between his better-known hits “Wall Street” and “Born on the Fourth of July”) helps explain the market for unfiltered voices in whatever form they take.

Don Imus, one of the iconic radio morning DJs in New York radio history, died today this at Baylor Scott and White Medical Center in College Station, TX. He was 79 and had been being hospitalized there since Christmas Eve.
For many years, Imus was a towering presence in New York, where he started in 1971 after being hired away from Cleveland, where it was clear he was onto something big. In his heyday, he spearheaded Wnbc and was a thorn in the side of Howard Stern, who put his reminiscences of the bitterness between them in the autobiographical 1997 film Private Parts. Imus defined the “shock jock” period, where certain irascible personalities flourished on the air.
Imus developed a coterie of characters he played, including the Right Reverend Billy Sol Hargus, Blind Mississippi White Boy, Pig Feets Dupree, Senator Edward Kennedy, Scott Muni and others. Imus appealed to the right audience, and...

It’s summertime, and that means a roundup of film-related books must include some lighter fare—hence this column’s inclusion of reads about Star Wars, Game of Thrones, Alien, and Dungeons & Dragons. However, there is also a fascinating exploration of Mike Leigh’s underrated Peterloo and a memoir from the late Chantal Akerman. Plus, Howard Stern returns with a deep dive into his years of stunningly insightful celebrity interviews.
The Making of Alien by J.W. Rinzler (Titan Books)
J.W. Rinzler’s books on the original Star Wars trilogy rank among the finest making-ofs in recent decades. And few films are more befitting of the Rinzler treatment than Ridley Scott’s Alien. This beautifully designed text from Titan Books is bursting with illustrations and behind-the-scenes photos, as well as stories of the difficulties Scott faced making the film. Vying for the heart of Howard Stern co-host Robin Quivers isn’t for the weak. So “American Idol” alum Jackie Tohn, who stars in the Netflix wrestling comedy “Glow,” threw herself into the ring, recruiting Stern song parody veteran Eli Bradon for a pair of parodies that had Stern and his SiriusXM listeners in stitches.
Tohn’s two collaborations with Braden — raunchy love songs to Quivers set to Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s sultry duet of “Shallow” from “A Star is Born,” and a positively filthy take on Cher’s “Believe” — both received big praise from Stern, who said the “Shallow” duet, which encouraged Quivers to try hooking up with girls, gave him “chills.”
“Fred is tearing up right now,” he laughed.
Getting the song on the show, Tohn said, and having Stern give her a big plug was one of the “biggest highlights of my career,” she tells Variety.

On June 6, 2019, award winning actor Paul Giamatti will celebrate his 52nd birthday. He is currently about to finish up his fourth season on the hit Showtime series “Billions” but is even more well known for his film career.
A graduate of the Yale Drama School, Giamatti began his career on the New York stage. He has appeared on Broadway four times in productions from esteemed authors Tom Stoppard, David Hare, Anton Chekov and Eugene O’Neill but surprisingly his rise to fame would come from playing a character named “Pig Vomit” in the movie version of Howard Stern’s book “Private Parts.” Giamatti played the part of an NBC radio executive who constantly battles Stern over obscenity rules and is practically driven mad by his never-ending battles with Stern.

Howard Stern hasn’t released a book in 24 years. Back in those days, he was a guy who didn’t think twice about calling Rosie O’Donnell a “fat pig”; using a giant, rotting fish as a mallet to spank a naked woman on the air; or viciously mocking a member of his “Wack Pack” with Down syndrome he’d dubbed “Gary the Retard.” On the cover of the book Miss America, he dressed as a drag queen, and inside he offered detailed accounts of his private cybersex sessions with fans.

Hulu has released its list of content arriving at the streaming service this June, as well as everything that will no longer be available to watch there after June 30.
At the top of the must-watch list is season three of Hulu Original “The Handmaid’s Tale,” which was notably pushed back to a June premiere date in order to ensure it would “maintain the quality it has,” Craig Erwich, Hulu’s Senior Vice President of Originals, said at the Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour in February. The first three episodes of the new season premiere on Hulu June 5, after which new episodes will be released every Wednesday.
Another Hulu Original of note is “The Weekly” series from The New York Times, coming June 3. Each half-hour episode will feature a Times journalist investigating one of today’s most pressing issues, with new issues being explored each week.

The early ‘70s were really just the hung over ‘60s; idealism had turned to realism as Vietnam marched on and acid dreams turned to lysergic comedowns. And that cutting pall was definitely there in the mainstream culture; TV sitcoms like All in the Family took on bigotry and racism with a sharpened blade and cynical tongue. Meanwhile in the underground, transgressive art was alive and well and still hitting its marks; sordid, seedy, and sprinkled with a devious sense of humor, Paul Bartel’s feature length debut Private Parts (1972) tried to bring that sensibility above ground to an audience not quite ready for its peculiar charms.
Released in September by MGM (!), Private Parts never even received much of a chance to offend mom and pop, as the title prevented it from being advertised in several newspapers and it quickly faded away. Such would be the directorial course of much of Bartel’s career,...

Comedians close to Artie Lange, “MADtv” star and former sidekick on “The Howard Stern Show,” have taken to Twitter to urge the struggling comedian to seek treatment for severe drug addiction.
Stand up comic and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” actor Richard Lewis tweeted a heart wrenching statement Thursday.
“Artie, this is my 1000th request over decades to beg you to surrender to your addictions,” Lewis wrote. “We had the most laughs sober. I love you. You’re beloved and a magnificent comedian cursed with self loathing and fear. Give it up and live.”
Patton Oswalt chimed in with Lewis, replying to the tweet: “What Richard said. Come On, Artie.”

Paul Giamatti watching porn is one of the most wrenchingly human things you’ll see on screen this year. This heart-rending spectacle happens just a few minutes into Tamara Jenkins’ “Private Life,” as Giamatti — playing 47-year-old theater director Richard Grimes — sits alone in a small white room in the Manhattan fertility clinic where he and his wife (Kathryn Hahn) have come in a desperate bid to conceive. His job is to produce a sperm sample. On the TV screen mounted against the far wall, an adult actor can be seen pile-driving his co-star, causing her to moan loud enough for everyone in the crowded waiting area outside to know what Richard is supposed to be doing in there. Jenkins holds on a close-up; exasperation, futility, and shame are written across Giamatti’s face like subtitles. Has it really come to this?
As the scene continues, it’s like a vintage Charlie Chaplin bit in slow-motion.

It comes as little surprise that Lucia Aniello and Paul W. Downs are a lot of fun to be around, laughing easily and finishing each other sentences when it comes to talking about their work. And there’s a lot of work to talk about, particularly their feature film debut, the Sony comedy “Rough Night.” Aniello directed the hard-r female-centric feature from the pair’s screenplay – they’re often splitting duties this way, though Aniello emerged early on as the director – which also features Downs in a supporting role.

Nadia Grace Mejia confidently strutted across the stage in a colorful two-piece bathing suit at the Miss USA pageant Sunday, landing her a spot in the competition's final five. However, Miss California didn't always feel so comfortable in her skin.
