Image
A Kevin Costner sports flick from over a decade ago just pulled the ultimate comeback, blitzing its way to the top of Netflix’s trending charts. Co-starring Jennifer Garner, this long-forgotten football drama didn’t exactly light up theaters back in the day. But now, it’s Netflix’s new Mvp.

Packed with front-office drama, game-day tension, and a surprising emotional punch, the film’s sudden rise proves that some plays just age better on the streaming field.

Hollywood Stars Who Lost Money Starring in Their Films: From Brad Pitt to Kevin Costner and More

Hollywood stars don't always make a fortune doing a movie, even when it's a hit. MEGAPatricia Arquette – 'Boyhood' Movieclips/YouTube

How much would you shell out to win an Oscar? Just ask Patricia Arquette, who was paid peanuts to do the 2014 flick and walked away with a golden statue.

She explained: "It's important to me as an actor to be able to make a living, but I'm going to tell you something — I paid more money to my babysitter and my dog walker than I made to be in Boyhood."

Taking a $1 million salary for the musical fantasy comedy, which Jack Black split with band member Kyle Gass, instead of his normal $12 million to bring his movie to theaters, the film Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny made $13.9 million and cost $20 million.

35 Years Ago, Kevin Costner's Masterpiece Quietly Changed Western Cinema Forever
Image
Anyone who knows Western cinema knows the history of the popular cinema genre and its evolution over the last hundred or so years. What's most fascinating about the genre is how it has affected audiences and audience appeal throughout the different eras of cinema. It seems there are multiple watershed films that either flip the script on the entire genre, pushing it in a different direction, or stand on their own as staples of the genre at any given time. From the classical era that influenced all Westerns to the stylized Italian "Spaghetti Westerns" and the contemporary revisionist Westerns, the genre has a plethora of important films to experience. Although they are not made as often in modern cinema, Westerns remain an important cultural cornerstone of cinematic storytelling.

Occasionally, a Western will come along that cements its place among the best in the genre, because the film knows exactly how...

“A lot of it was ego”: Kevin Costner Learned the Hard Way That He Was No Tom Cruise in His $80M Disaster That Won Worst Picture
Image
The acting genius of Kevin Costner knows no bounds, as evident from his John Dutton role in the Yellowstone universe. But while he may be one of the most respected actors in Hollywood, even his credibility cannot always guarantee box office success. He learned this the hard way when one of his $80 million projects crashed at the box office.

Not only that, but it also earned the title of Worst Picture, serving as a startling reminder that he wasn’t exactly in Tom Cruise’s league when it came to big-budget blockbusters.

Kevin Costner’s passion project that bombed at the box-office

In Hollywood, many actors have taken on the challenge of both directing and starring in the same project. But while some manage to handle this effortlessly, for others, it becomes a major task, especially when they don’t want any help from others.

‘Megalopolis’ director Francis Ford Coppola ‘accepts’ Razzie by slamming ‘gutless’ industry
Image
Francis Ford Coppola "won" Worst Director at the Razzie Awards for his ambitious, self-financed epic Megalopolis. And he actually accepted the "honor," letting the Razzies and Hollywood know what he thinks about them in an unfiltered social media post. "I am thrilled to accept the Razzie Award," he stated, "when so few have the courage to go against the prevailing trends of contemporary moviemaking!"

Coppola, a five-time Oscar winner, continued, "In this wreck of a world today, where Art is given scores as if it were professional wrestling, I chose to Not follow the gutless rules laid down by an industry so terrified of risk that despite the enormous pool of young talent at its disposal, may not create pictures that will be relevant and alive 50 years from now." He said it was an honor to "stand alongside a great and courageous filmmaker like Jacques Tati who impoverished himself completely...

What Happened To The Cast Of The 1994 Wyatt Earp Movie?
Image
"Tombstone," from 1993, is the Wyatt Earp movie most people remember from the '90s, but it's hardly the only star-studded spectacle about the legendary marshal. A year later, "Wyatt Earp" came out, reuniting actor Kevin Costner with filmmaker Lawrence Kasdan, the director who first made him a charismatic cowboy in 1985's "Silverado." A love of the old west clearly stuck with Costner, who made his directorial debut with "Dances With Wolves," an epic about a Union Army Lieutenant (Costner) who goes native. If you haven't seen it, you've probably at least heard the plot of "Avatar" compared (unfavorably) to it. It won seven Oscars, including Best Picture and another for Costner as Best Director.

Covering more of Earp's life than just the famous gunfight at the O.K. Corral, "Wyatt Earp" came loaded with actors both familiar and new, as one would expect of an old Hollywood epic biopic. It...

What Is The Oscars Curse – And Is It Real?
Image
For those with Hollywood dreams, whether it's acting in films or directing them, their biggest aspiration may be to win an Oscar. "Academy Award winner" would be forever attached to their name, and presumably, doors would open in their careers that had never opened before.

While the Oscars certainly recognize performers and filmmakers for their exceptional talents and place them in a class above the rest, they also bring high expectations. After winning, there will always be pressure to live up to that title, which may be impossible to achieve again. This is part of the dreaded "Oscar curse." What happens after you've achieved the biggest honor in Hollywood?

Oscar campaigns and wins can be just as much of a story as the movies themselves. Hollywood's publicity machine spins a specific narrative to help an artist win the coveted award — the higher the stakes or the more cultural impact, the better.

The John Wayne Western That Changed Kevin Costner's Life
Image
If you're ever fortunate enough to interview a great filmmaker, or simply find yourself occupying the same space as one and want to make the moment meaningful before it passes, you'll always get a genuine answer when you ask them to name the movie that made them fall in love with the medium. This may not be true in years to come, when creators who grew up during the downtick in theatrical exhibition and the explosion of TikTok craft art meant to be digested in 30-second morsels on your smartphone, but right now it is a near certainty that your favorite director got bit by the cinema bug while sitting in a darkened theater — and that's a memory they can access as fast as their first kiss (do not ask them about that).

Steven Spielberg can tell you all about Cecil B. DeMille's "The Greatest Show on Earth," while...

Kevin Costner Wanted '90s Fitness Guru Susan Powter for 'Waterworld''
Image
If you grew up in the 1990s, then the name Susan Powter might seem familiar to you. She was the fitness guru with short, spikey blonde hair that became famous for her weight-loss infomercials where her catchphrase, "Stop the insanity," became a cultural phenomenon. These days, she's an Uber Eats driver living in Las Vegas, but back then, she was one of the most recognizable faces in the world and, according to her, was once courted by Kevin Costner to star in his box office flop, Waterworld.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Powter – who was once so famous she was given her own talk show – says she received a phone call from Costner at the height of her popularity. The call came whilst she was in the middle of a beauty appointment in L.A., and, as she remembers it, Costner was understanding when she turned him down.

"He was about to shoot that movie.

The 15 Best Asian Documentaries of 2024
Image
As we have mentioned many times before, the documentary is currently experiencing one of its golden periods, with the fact that reality goes beyond any script becoming quite obvious throughout the plethora of entries we have been seeing during that last few years. Furthermore, as a number of courageous filmmakers shed light to issues that are dangerous to depict (to say the least) or even hard to watch, the quality of the category continues to improve. Add to that the biographical ones, the ones that present real but relatively unknown sides of each country’s society and you have the majority of reasons for what we mentioned in the beginning.

Without further ado, here are the 15 Best Asian Documentaries of 2024, in reverse order. Some may have premiered in 2023, but since they mostly circulated in 2024, we decided to include them.

Kevin Costner’s Box Office Failure, ‘Horizon,’ Is Picking Up Steam on Streaming
Image
Kevin Costner has built a long career both as an actor and director, earning two Oscars for his 1990 epic Dances with Wolves. He’s been part of major hits like Field of Dreams, The Bodyguard, and Bull Durham. Critics and audiences alike have praised his work, with films like Hidden Figures scoring 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.

But not everything he’s touched has turned to gold. Costner has had his share of failures, too. His 2002 movie Dragonfly sits at the bottom of his Rotten Tomatoes list with just 7%. Even The Postman, now considered a cult classic, was a disaster at the box office, grossing $17 million against an $80 million budget and scoring only 14% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The challenges continued with his 2024 film Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1. This Western, released in June, earned $38.2 million worldwide on a massive $100 million budget. Critics weren’t impressed either, giving it a 51% Tomatometer score.

Kevin Costner’s 2024 Western Is Trending On Netflix After Box Office Failure Derailed Franchise Plan
Image
Kevin Costner has a deep history both in front of and behind the camera. He has won two Oscars, including for Best Director and Best Picture for his 1990 historical epic Dances with Wolves. The actor has also been a part of other iconic projects, including Field of Dreams, The Bodyguard, and The Postman. Many of his works have been critically acclaimed, including Bull Durham and Hidden Figures, which have 97% and 93% Rotten Tomatoes scores, respectively.

While many of these films have been well-received, not all of Costner's films have been so lucky. Through all his successes, the actor has also had flops both critically and commercially. His lowest-rated film on Rotten Tomatoes was Dragonfly, a 2002 film that managed only a 7% approval rating. Even The Postman, which has become a staple film in his career, was a critical and box office bomb, scoring a 14% Tomatometer and making just over $17 million on an estimated $80 million budget.

How A $80 Million Post-Apocalyptic Epic Became One Of Hollywood’s Biggest Box Office Flops!
Image
Post-apocalyptic Movie Disaster (Photo Credit – Prime Video)

In 1997, Kevin Costner’s The Postman flopped hard. An $80M gamble, it pulled in just $20M, leaving Costner and Warner Bros. nursing a box office wound no plot twist could heal.

The Postman was set in a world ravaged by the collapse of civilization. Costner played a drifter who stumbles upon a skeleton in a mail truck, takes up the mailman’s mantle, and starts delivering letters for a “new government” he just made up. It’s a classic case of the lie becoming reality, with people believing that Broadway’s Phantom of the Opera was still showing in post-apocalyptic New York while they scrounged for food in a “three-year winter.” What could possibly go wrong? Well, everything.

The film’s lackluster box office performance wasn’t the only problem. There were giant leaps in time that would’ve made any viewer scratch their head.

Kevin Costner's 'Horizon: Chapter 1' is Now Streaming on Netflix
Image
The saga of Kevin Costner’s poorly received Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 is proving to have more twists and turns off-screen than in the slow, meandering plot of the film itself. After the movie failed to spark at the box office, it was released as a Max-exclusive title…but even that has not lasted very long, as Horizon – Chapter 1 has unexpectedly joined the Netflix library. As you would expect, this has put the divisive first part of Costner’s quadrilogy of planned movies in front of a whole new global audience.

Horizon: An American Saga is set against a troubled backdrop of the American West during an era of upheaval in the country. Costner has a large canvas to fill, and plans on doing so across four movies. However, despite the scope of the project and the actor/director’s previous standing at the helm of Western classics...

What’s going to happen to Horizon: Chapter 2?
Image
One of the biggest gambles of 2024 was, without a doubt, Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga. This is Costner’s passion project, with him having worked on the script since 1988. He even named his youngest son Hayes after the character he was gearing up to play in the films. But, westerns have never been the easiest movies to get financed. While Costner’s Dances With Wolves made hundreds of millions and won Costner a couple of Oscars, his follow-up western, Wyatt Earp, was an expensive misfire. However, Open Range made money, given that it was a relatively thrifty production. While 1997’s The Postman deeply impacted Costner’s career for many years, the mammoth success of Yellowstone put him back on top. Still eager to get the saga made, which would eventually grow to five chapters, he bet on himself and largely financed the first two Horizon movies himself.

Indeed,...

Why The Man Of Steel Script Initially Left Kevin Costner Disappointed
Image
Despite the odd colossal, almost career-ending box office flop, Kevin Costner has had a remarkably consistent career. Even when he wasn't matching the high of winning Best Picture for his celebrated Western epic "Dances With Wolves," which he both directed and starred in, Costner was consistently working, cementing his status as one of Hollywood's most enduring movie stars. Despite a few missteps, Costner's best films, such as "Bull Durham" and "Field of Dreams," showcased his remarkable talent and established his reputation as a serious actor — a reputation that has withstood such blunders as 1997's "The Postman."

This was part of the reason Zack Snyder cast Costner as Superman's dad in 2013's "Man of Steel." The actor played Kal-El's earthly father, Jonathan Kent, alongside Diane Lane as Martha Kent in the blockbuster Superman reboot. Snyder explained his decision to cast the pair to Gizmodo:

"I think the thing you realize...

‘Dune: Prophecy’: How Olivia Williams & Emily Watson’s Longtime Friendship Led To “Powerful And Damaged” Sister Roles In “A Really Tasty Plot”
Image
Since their early 20s, Emily Watson and Olivia Williams’ careers have run on parallel tracks. Born one year apart, they first got to know each other by pondering their futures together on a patch of grass outside The Black Swan pub in Stratford-upon-Avon. “We met at the Royal Shakespeare Company, in the early ’90s, where we were in different plays in different seasons,” says Williams. The two never ended up on stage together. “Partly because there aren’t that many scripts around for two leading ladies of the same age,” adds Watson.

Their paths would soon cross again, as Williams made her foray into Hollywood, with Kevin Costner’s The Postman and Wes Anderson’s Rushmore, around the same time as Watson was leveraging her breakout success in Lars von Trier’s Breaking the Waves. “I was staying at the Four Seasons and we had a cosmopolitan, as was the fashion then,...

The Six Triple Eight review – Tyler Perry’s war movie is another bomb
Kerry Washington
Kerry Washington hams it up in the writer-director’s stodgy ode to a battalion of women in the second world war who deserve far better

You have to hand it to film-maker, Netflix content provider and general entertainment impresario Tyler Perry: even within his self-created empire, he’s still capable of making an unexpected turn. Often, he cranks out his inimitably strange brand of broad comedies, histrionic melodramas and combinations of the two at a hasty clip. But sometimes, he decides that he wants to revive the inspirational spirit of mail delivery seen in Kevin Costner’s The Postman.

That’s admittedly a glib way of describing The Six Triple Eight, the story of a real-life second world war battalion composed entirely of Black women – the only such group to serve in Europe during the war. Perry’s third 2024 release (although maybe there’s still time for a fourth...

The Only Actress To Win An Oscar And Razzie In The Same Year
Image
The nominations for the 2010 Academy Awards, recognizing the films that were released in 2009, were announced on February 2 at 5:38 a.m. I remember because I got up early to watch them. That year saw Sandra Bullock nominated for Best Actress (for "The Blind Side") alongside Helen Mirren ("The Last Station"), Gabourey Sidibe ("Precious"), Carey Mulligan ("An Education"), and Meryl Streep ("Julie & Julia").

The night before the Oscar announcements, however, the notorious Golden Raspberry awards, a.k.a. the Razzies, announced their nominees for the worst films of 2009. The Razzies are, of course, a hotly contested tradition, and it has many critics who point out the mean-spiritedness of the awards as well as its tendency to pick on pop movies and already hated performers. The nominees for Worst Actress that year were Sandra Bullock ("All About Steve"), Beyoncé ("Obsessed"), Miley Cyrus ("The Hannah Montana Movie"), Sarah Jessica Parker ("Did You Hear About the Morgans?...

Quick Links What is Bull Durham About? Oscar-Worthy Performances From Hollywood Legends Bull Durham and Challengers Strangely Works As A Double Feature

The modern idea of Kevin Costner is vastly different from what it was back in the 1980s. Kevin Costner might be most known today for his long-form vanity projects, like Yellowstone and the four-part Horizon: An American Saga, but he was at one point an adaptable Swiss army knife of an actor and filmmaker. He dabbled in everything from disaster films to mob thrillers, all the way to classic comedies, but since the beginning, hes been particularly involved with two specific subgenres. He made his interest in Western epics known from the very beginning, with Dances With Wolves, JFK, and The Postman, but he also found a second niche that he managed to make entirely his own.

Kevin Costner is synonymous with the baseball movie, and for good reason.

Olivia Williams on ‘Dune: Prophecy,’ Her “Own ‘Lost in Translation’ Moment,” and Her Flirt With Hollywood Stardom
Image
“It’s so nice to talk to The Hollywood Reporter,” Olivia Williams says, as we start our interview, “because I really had that Hollywood experience. I went from living in a damp basement flat in Camden Town to, in a matter of days, flying in a private jet to go on set of a huge Hollywood movie.”

Over the course of a single year, from 1997 to 1998, Williams (before then a jobbing British theater actress, doing commercials for Dove shower cream — “they asked me to audition in a bikini…I felt like giving up”) starred in three studio films: Kevin Costner’s The Postman, Wes Anderson’s Rushmore and M. Night Shyamalan’s The Sixth Sense. The Postman was a legendary flop. Rushmore an indie breakout. The Sixth Sense a gargantuan, global hit. Williams, it appeared, had arrived.

Warning: contains spoilers for Huge Detective #1-3!

Huge Detective, from Titan Comics, does what many thought impossible: successfully mix the noir genre with kaijus. These two seemingly disparate genres actually share a few things in common, and Huge Detective brings these winding threads together beautifully. Huge Detectives unique blend of the noir/thriller genre and giant monsters makes it one of this years most memorable crime comics.

Huge Detective is written by Adam Rose and drawn by Magenta King. In the near future, giant monsters emerge from the underground, threatening to overrun humanity. The monsters, called Huges, are intelligent, and eventually they and humanity come to a planet-sharing agreement: the Huges get the Australian continent, which is then rechristened BrobDingNag. The Worst Kevin Costner Movie, According To Rotten Tomatoes
Image
If you grew up on such films as "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective," "The Nutty Professor," and "Liar Liar," you likely know the name Tom Shadyac. The writer/director made a name for himself with these now beloved family comedies. You might remember his first detour from such fare with the critically-panned but commercially successful "Patch Adams," but chances are you've never heard of his follow-up.

Shadyac's 2002 supernatural thriller "Dragonfly" was every bit as maudlin as "Patch Adams" but it also had the distinction of being a bona fide box office dud, making $52 million on a $60 million budget. Trying something different is often to be commended, but the guy who directed "Ace Ventura" helming a film about a widowed doctor whose dead wife contacts him through patients doesn't seem like the most well-advised career move. Still, if you've got Kevin Costner fronting your bizarre drama, you might be in with a chance of making something half-decent.

Kevin Costner's Lowest-Rated Movie Confirms A Surprising Career Trend
Image
Kevin Costner has been a Hollywood stalwart for over four decades. In that time, he has featured in some of the industry's biggest hits, including fan favorites like Field of Dreams and award winners such as Dances With Wolves. However, while these movies and others like them constitute some high-profile successes for Costner, his involvement hasn't always guaranteed a good return.

While Kevin Costner's career has had multiple highs, there have also been lows. Prominent examples include notorious bombs like Waterworld and The Postman, but even more recent projects have fluctuated between box office and critical acclaim and mediocrity. Examples like Horizon prove how fickle fortunes can be in the filmmaking business. However, while almost every actor has their share of failures, something about Costner's disappointments stands out. As demonstrated by the actor's worst-reviewed film of all time, the 2002 thriller Dragonfly, even when his movies underwhelm, they often prove surprisingly popular with viewers.

The Colossal Box Office Flop That Almost Ended Kevin Costner's Career
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Kevin Costner has had a long, fruitful career in Hollywood that spans more than four decades dating back to his early roles in films like "The Big Chill" and "Silverado." That career has included some wildly high highs, including his Best Picture winning Western epic "Dances With Wolves," which is still regarded as one of his best films. "Dances With Wolves" also started Costner's career as a director, kicking off his time behind the camera on a high note. Unfortunately, his follow-up -- which came in the form of 1997's "The Postman" -- didn't go nearly as well.

With a big budget, heralded source material and the world on his side, Costner's "The Postman" seemed destined for success. Instead, it became a box office bomb that derailed his career for years and was arguably an even bigger Costner-led flop than...

Kevin Costner Was Massively Upstaged in the Action Epic Waterworld
Image
With his award-winning performance in Yellowstone and supporting roles in films such as Man of Steel, Kevin Costner appears to be experiencing something of a career renaissance. The entertainment industry can sometimes be fickle, especially regarding box-office disappointments that arrive on the heels of critical and commercial successes. Through the 1990s, Costner was one of the biggest stars in Hollywood and one who also achieved notable success as a director, receiving two Academy Awards for Dances with Wolves. Despite the rising star power that Costner had generated early on in his career, two major disappointments, Waterworld and The Postman, saw it plummet almost as quickly.

In theory, Waterworld appeared like it could have been a huge success. One of many summer blockbusters that cater to the desire for action on a large scale and is set in a dystopian future where the fears of climate change have become manifest, with...

Kevin Costner in Rumor Has It... (2005)
The Postman: Revisiting Kevin Costner’s biggest flop
Kevin Costner in Rumor Has It... (2005)
Back in 1994, everyone expected Kevin Costner’s Waterworld to be one of the biggest box office disasters of all time. The press was labeling it “Fishtar” (after the infamous flop Ishtar) or “Kevin’s Gate”, but to the surprise of everyone, it actually did fine at the box office and turned a small profit. However, Costner did indeed have a massive box office disaster just a few years later when he opted to make another post-apocalyptic action movie, The Postman (which he also directed), which opened opposite James Cameron’s Titanic and laid a massive egg in theatres.

Reviews were harsh, with his take of a nomadic drifter posing as the world’s last postman widely mocked for its mix of action and over-the-top sentiment. It swept the Razzies, but even worse was the fact that it only grossed $30 million worldwide, which was disastrous, and ended up torpedoing Costner’s...

Kevin Costner's Reason For Continuing To Make Westerns Is More Relatable Than You'd Think
Image
Kevin Costner's most recent directorial effort was the expansive American history epic "Horizon: An American Saga - Part 1." The film, running 181 minutes unto itself, was meant to be the first of four equally expansive epics that would chronicle the phenomenon of Arizona boomtowns in the 1860s. The cast included Sam Worthington, Sienna Miller, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Jena Malone, Luke Wilson, Will Patton, and dozens of others. Costner himself played Hays Ellison, a horse trader with a past.

The critical response to "Horizon Part 1" was lukewarm, with critics citing the film's expansiveness as a weakness that robs it of a vital narrative throughline. The photography is beautiful, but "Horizon" is lugubrious and unfocused. The first two parts were filmed back-to-back and reported cost $100 million to make, with Costner contributing $39 million of his own money. When the first "Horizon" film only made $29 million domestically, New Line Cinema pulled "Part 2" from its release schedule.

Dune: Prophecy is set 30 years after the book 'Sisterhood of Dune'
Image
Earlier this year, Denis Villeneuve released the masterpiece Dune: Part Two and blew us all away with his stunning vision of the desert planet Arrakis, the sandworms that live there, and the rise of unwilling space messiah Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet). But that's not the only Dune thing that'll be coming to our screens this year. Believe it or not, we're but a few short months away from the release of Dune: Prophecy, a brand new spinoff series coming to Max.

Dune: Prophecy is set 10,000 years before the Dune story covered in Denis Villeneuve's movies, which adapt the seminal 1965 novel by Frank Herbert. This new series is all about the founding of the Bene Gesserit sisterhood of space witches, who manipulate the levers of power in the galaxy from the shadows. By Paul's time, they're one of the most powerful factions around. But in Dune: Prophecy, they're just beginning to find their footing.

Kevin Costner explains why his movies are so long
Image
Looking at Kevin Costner’s filmography as a director, one thing is apparent: the guy loves his epics. His debut, 1990’s Dances with Wolves, clocked in at just over three hours, while his 1997 follow-up, The Postman, ran just under that. After practically making a short film with Open Range (139 minutes), he took a two-decade break before diving into his next: the multi-part Horizon, with its first two parts surpassing the six-hour mark. So what drives Kevin Costner to make such lengthy movies? It comes down to the classics.

At History Channel’s recent History Talks event (via Deadline), Kevin Costner said it was seeing movies of an epic scale that not only captured his curiosity for film but also subconsciously made him lean towards movies of such lengthy runtimes. In particular, he cited 1962’s How the West Was Won, which credits three directors – Henry Hathaway, John Ford and George Marshall...

One of Kevin Costners Best Westerns Isnt One He Directed
Image
Quick Links Kevin Costner Is Known for His Directing Silverado Was a Notable Exception for Costner The Critical Response To Silverado Many of Costner's Best Projects Came Without His Direction

Silverado is still remembered as one of Kevin Costner's best Westerns, and it happens to be one that he never actually directed. Costner is a legendary actor who made his name in the Western genre, having directed Dances with Wolves in 1990. The actor went on to become a skilled director, but he has always maintained his talents in the traditional on-screen acting style that he is known for.

While one of his earliest performances has been overlooked in recent years, Silverado has still secured its place in the Western genre that dominated the 20th century. It tells the story of a group of people who struggle to stand against various enemy forces while balancing action-packed scenes with relationships. In essence,...

34 Years After Dances With Wolves, Its Time To Accept The Harsh Reality Of Kevin Costners Career
Image
34 years after his Oscar-winning epic Western, Dances With Wolves, arrived in theaters, it's time for audiences to accept an uncomfortable truth about screen legend Kevin Costner's career. An actor, writer, and director with an impressive pedigree, Costner ranks as one of the industry's biggest stars, having featured in multiple award-winning projects and box office successes. One of the most remarkable things about Costner's rise has been his supposed command of all aspects of the movie-making process. However, closer inspection reveals that this particular reputation is not necessarily warranted.

Kevin Costner's acting career began in the 1980s, where he rapidly established himself as a compelling screen presence. After a series of minor roles, he secured the lead role of Eliot Ness in The Untouchables. This preceded a number of hit releases, such as the sports movies Field of Dreams and Bill Durham. It was this success that led to his...

The Postman Was Kevin Costner's Worst Western Flop, Not Horizon
Image
Quick Links The Postman Plot and Cast The Postman Was a Flop at the Box Office Is The Postman Worth a Watch?

It has undoubtedly been a rough go for Kevin Costner in 2024. His most recent project, Horizon: An American Saga, struggled at the box office before making its way to streaming with mixed reviews from viewers and critics. Some may even say the discourse around the film has been rather harsh for Costner, whose career as an actor and director has seen equal successes as horrible failures.

Still, out of all the movies that Costner has directed, one stands out as his biggest flop, and we are not talking about Waterworld, which he starred in. 1997's The Postman was such a financial and critical failure that it had an irreplicable effect on Costner's career that few other actors have experienced. We will examine just how badly The Postman did in the theaters,...

Kevin Costner's Open Range 2003 Western is the Perfect Depiction of Cowboys, According to Expert
Image
A historical cowboy expert says Kevin Costner's Western drama of 2003, Open Range, is one of the best cowboy movies ever made. While no one ever denied it was a great execution of the genre with visible mastery in its set pieces, Old West historian and cowboy culture authority, Michael Grauer, has praised Open Range above other Western movies because of its fine attention to detail and historical accuracy.

Open Range was Costner's gamble on the Western genre during the 2000s. After the lackluster response to The Postman, a film he directed and starred in and which was panned by critics, Costner decided to take some time out, staying away from the director's chair. However, because of his passion for Westerns, he said yes to the big-screen adaptation of The Open Range Men by Lauran Paine. Produced by Touchstone Pictures, the film was a hit with audiences and critics, who...

Image
Kevin Costner has been reeling in from the failure of his magnum opus Horizon: An American Saga. The first chapter of the two-part saga reportedly fell short of expectations and bombed at the box office. The second chapter was pulled from its release date and postponed indefinitely.

While Costner has not commented on its failure, the actor seems to be ready to shoot the third chapter of the saga. However, the one regret that the actor seemed to have in his filmography is when his other Western Wyatt Earp bombed at the box office. He said that he regretted the timing of the release, as it came out six months after Val Kilmer’s Tombstone.

Kevin Costner’s Costly Regret Involved Val Kilmer’s Epic Western Val Kilmer in Tombstone | Credits: Hollywood Pictures/Cinergi Pictures

Kevin Costner's New Western Avoided A Horrible Box Office Record Despite $25 Million Performance
Image
Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 avoided being Kevin Costner's lowest-grossing movie at the box office. Costner's passion project fell short of expectations with only $23.4 million in earnings so far. Despite facing tough competition, Horizon failed to generate much excitement from audiences.

Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 has failed to become a hit at the box office, but it still managed to avoid a horrible Kevin Costner record. The first of four planned Westerns in an epic saga came out in theaters in July 2024 to a tepid reception. Despite Costner left Yellowstone to make the passion project that took decades and millions of his own money to become real, Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1's release failed to generate much excitement from general audiences.

Is Kevin Costner's Horizon: An American Saga a Box Office Flop?
Image
Kevin Costner invested $38 million in Horizon: An American Saga, facing financial risks and mixed reviews. Chapter 1's box-office performance was disappointing, needing a streaming deal for potential recovery. Yellowstone's audience didn't show significant enthusiasm for Horizon, impacting its success.

Kevin Costner began developing Horizon: An American Saga as a film series in 1988 before he revitalized the Western genre in Hollywood with his feature directorial debut, the epic 1990 Western film Dances with Wolves, which brought him two Academy Awards and made Costner arguably the most powerful star in Hollywood.

Since Dances with Wolves, his relationship with the Western genre, in which he had his breakthrough career role in the 1985 Western film Silverado, has mirrored the erratic nature of his overall career. The actor's second feature directorial outing, the 1997 post-apocalyptic neo-Western film The Postman, was a commercial and critical disaster, while his third directorial outing, the acclaimed 2003 revisionist Western film Open Range,...

Kevin Costner Dropped Out of Django Unchained for a Surprising Reason
Image
There are few icons of the film industry whose rise to stardom, fall from grace, and subsequent comeback are quite as interesting as Kevin Costners career trajectory. There was a period in the early 1990s when Costner was arguably one of the biggest movie stars on the planet, but a few major box office bombs like The Postman soon ended that. Costner is the only one laughing now, as the success of Yellowstone in the last few years gave him the subsequent clout to direct his four-part passion project Horizon: An American Saga. Although luck has proven to be on his side, Costner briefly considered joining the cast of Quentin Tarantinos Academy Award-winning revisionist Western, Django Unchained.

Kevin Costner Breaks Silence On Shocking Drug Use
Image
Kevin Costner may be best known to modern audiences for his turn as John Dutton in the hit series, Yellowstone, however, the actor recently opened up about his shocking drug use while filming one of his films from a few years ago. So, what did the actor have to say?

Kevin Costner Is A Hollywood Legend

Kevin Coster is a certified Hollywood legend. He may be best known for many of his hit Westerns, however, the actor is never out of his depth, no matter what role comes his way. He is in his element in a cowboy hat and boots as much as he is in a suit and tie, and that kind of versatility is why he has built such a successful Hollywood career.

In addition to being in front of the camera, Kevin Costner has had his share of hits as a director as well. So, he...

Kevin Costner in Rumor Has It... (2005)
With Horizon Poised to Flop, Should Kevin Costner Have Stuck With Yellowstone?
Kevin Costner in Rumor Has It... (2005)
Some of our younger readers might not remember this, but in the early 1990s, Kevin Costner was objectively the biggest thing in Hollywood.

The impressive streak of Field of Dreams, Dances With Wolves, JFK, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and The Bodyguard cemented Costner's place as one of the most bankable box office draws of his generation.

The fact that Costner wrote, directed, and starred in Wolves -- which went on to win several Oscars, including Best Picture -- had many industry scribes drawing comparisons to a young Orson Welles.

A Walking Cautionary Tale

But even the brightest stars can be eclipsed by a string of historic flops, and by the end of the decade, Costner's name was synonymous with "box office poison."

1995's Waterworld and 1997's The Postman -- both written, directed by, and starring Costner -- were such colossal (and colossally expensive) failures that they combined to make...

Everything That Went Wrong During the Cursed Production of Kevin Costner's 'The Postman'
Image
Kevin Costner and the Western seem to go hand in hand. His directorial debut, Dances With Wolves, nabbed seven Oscars and cemented him as a rising filmmaker, while Yellowstone revitalized his career. Now Costner looks to repeat the process with Horizon: An American Saga, the first of four films in his Western epic series. But Costner has had his fair share of film flameouts, and the biggest might be The Postman. Based on the novel of the same name by David Brin, The Postman takes place in a post-apocalyptic America. Costner's titular Postman ends up traveling the country and spreading a message of hope, all while wearing a postman's uniform. But if The Postman carried a positive message, Costner's actions behind the scenes were anything but peaceful.

“It’s a ridiculous theme for me”: Kevin Costner’s Career Has Been Haunted By One Harsh Truth He Still Cannot Escape After Over 30 Years
Image
Kevin Costner has poured his heart and soul into bringing Horizon: An American Saga to life, dedicating countless hours and his hard-earned money over many years. This ambitious project marks the beginning of a four-part film series, with the second installment scheduled for release in August. Parts three and four are currently in development.

Kevin Costner in Hoizon (image credit: Warner Brothers)

In a significant return to directing after more than two decades, Costner leads a talented ensemble cast through a sweeping narrative spanning 15 years of American history, from pre- to post-Civil War expansion. From his earlier directorial successes like Dances with Wolves and Open Range, Costner has taken on the challenge of not only directing but also financing a substantial portion of these epic films. And this is what he feels is a little ridiculous about big old Hollywood.
