The Horse Whisperer (1998)
After six decades in show business, Robert Redford announced that 2018's 'The Old Man & the Gun' will be his last performance. The role is a familiar one for the screen legend: a con with conviction. Let's travel "Through the Lens" to explore how Redford developed this character and how this on-screen persona perfectly culminates in his cinematic swan song.

    • Trivia
This was the first movie directed by Robert Redford in which he appeared on-screen. However, he previously served as the narrator of A River Runs Through It (1992).
    • Goofs
Booker is in the corral alone trying to "hook on" with Pilgrim. Just before he squats to remove the lasso from Pilgrim if you look under the horses neck you can see the lower half of a man dressed exactly the same as Booker.
    • Quotes

Tom Booker: There was a boy from the Blackfeet reservation, he used to do some work around here for a while. Sixteen, strong kid, good kid. He and I were really, really good friends. One day he went swimming and dove headfirst into the lake... and right into a rock. And it snapped his neck, paralyzed him. And after the accident I'd look in on him from time to time. But he wasn't there. It was like his mind, his spirit, whatever you want to call it, just disappeared. The only thing left was just anger. Just sort of as if the... the boy I once knew just went somewhere else.

Grace: I know where he goes.

Tom Booker: I know you do. Don't you disappear. You do whatever you have to do to hold on.

    • Alternate versions
The film formats the early scenes at a 1.85: 1 aspect ratio, and the Montana scenes at a wider 2.35: 1 aspect ratio. The Blu-ray release keeps everything at a 2.35: 1 aspect ratio, because if one tried to reproduce both aspect ratios on a Blu-ray, the picture would get smaller during the Montana scenes instead of wider. The screen on an HDTV cannot expand.

    Slow but moving

Yes, I agree the film is slow and, perhaps, overlong. Yes, there appears little in common between the methods presented in the film and documented 'horse whispering'.

However this film needed to show the passage of time, which is, after all, the greatest healer. I found the film to be moving.

I was interested in a comment that there was no 'motivation' for the disfunctionality in the family unit. As one who has witnessed many divorces I feel that I can safely say that in real life these forces can be subtle enough to elude the participants; let alone an audience.

I was greatly relieved that the trite ending I envisaged didn't occur.

Overall if you want a gently paced but powerfully emotive film then it is to be recommended; a liking of horses helps greatly!!
