Fans on Facebook have been speculating on what a hypothetical Flubber 2 would starring Adam Sandler would look like, leading to a concept poster making the rounds.
The poster seems to be referring to the 1997 Flubber movie starring Robin Williams, but that was not the only time the story of a professor and his "flying rubber" was told on screen.
Disney released the first Flubber movie, The Absent-Minded Professor starring Fred MacMurray, in 1961, and a sequel, Son of Flubber, in 1963. 1988 saw a remake of the original movie, also called The Absent-Minded Professor, this time starring Harry Anderson (and available to watch on YouTube).

If you’re like me, you spend a lot of August yelling “Summer is over!” to your nearest and dearest — and they don’t take kindly to that. Summer TV is in its twilight, while fall premieres loom on the horizon after the Emmy Awards on September 15.
But summer is not over, and there’s plenty of new titles to stream in the Disney bundle. Disney+ will premiere new Star Wars and “Winnie the Pooh” titles for kids, as well as the original series “Are You Sure?!” following BTS’s Jimin and Jung Kook. Hulu will become home to “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” “The Woman King,” “Smile,” and more movie titles, as well as the home for FX series — this month: “The New York Times Presents: Lie to Fly: Documentary Premiere.” Hulu originals “Solar Opposites” returns on August 12, and “Reasonable Doubt” for its second season starting August...

It was an act of rebellion. That’s how Steve “Spaz” Williams saw it in the early ‘90s, and that’s how he reflects on it even more clearly now. The choice to not-so-subtly sneak the moving image of a computer generated Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton into Kathleen Kennedy’s line of vision was something he was warned not to do; something that was out-of-bounds since Steven Spielberg’s then developing Jurassic Park was already committed to relying almost exclusively on stop motion animation and animatronics. It was something that never should’ve happened.
And yet, when Kennedy, a producer on Jurassic Park, toured Ilm studios alongside Frank Marshall, there it was “in the background” on one of Spaz’s computer screens: a fully digital T. Rex walking with a fluidity hitherto unseen in giant monster movies. The industry would never be the same.

Given its subject matter, it’s fitting that Scott Leberecht’s documentary “Spaz” is so committed to throwing a middle finger to the filmmaking establishment, but in wielding awkward narrative tools, Leberecht undermines his own film’s idiosyncratic subject. The film follows Steve “Spaz” Williams, the revolutionary and rebellious visual effects designer behind “Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” “Jurassic Park,” “The Mask,” and so forth, to build out
“I had it all,” Williams laments in the film’s opening voiceover, clumsily calling up the wide variety of films that open with the similarly toned (and now meme’d to death) “you’re probably wondering how I got here?” query. The framing is cliche, setting up an unnecessary narrative artificiality to what’s clearly a real heartache. But once Leberecht throws the narrative back into his engaging subject’s hands to recount his turbulent life, from childhood to his time at Lucasfilm...

Prop Store's auctions are always a treat for genre fans, because they're able to offer some of the very best props and costumes. HollywoodIn #WatchWithTNM, we look back at this film about Kevin, a boy who wishes one night that he never has to see his family again.Nikhita VenugopalYears ago, when I was definitely old enough to know better, I woke up on an airplane still sitting on the tarmac and found that I was alone. My parents were almost certainly sitting next to me when I fell asleep, but now, the two seats next to me were empty. For about two minutes, I grappled with the only possible answer to my situation: They had left me. Turns out they hadn’t left me, and had just moved a few rows away to some empty seats. But for a few minutes, I got to imagine what I would do if I was totally and completely alone. In theory, it’s every kid’s dream to be left alone. No one to tell you what to do,...

Disney bucked box office tradition this year, opting for the first time since 2014 not to release a movie the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.
But that doesn’t mean the studio won’t still gobble up the competition around Turkey Day. Disney unveiled “Frozen 2,” which debuted to a stellar $130 million in North America, a week earlier than the traditional holiday release. It’s a strategic move that Lionsgate and Warner Bros. previously deployed with “Hunger Games: Catching Fire” and “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” two of the highest-grossing Thanksgiving releases ever.
Like those offerings, “Frozen 2” should power an impressive sophomore outing during a time when young kids are out of school and parents are off from work.
“Hunger Games: Catching Fire” still holds the record for the biggest Thanksgiving haul for its second weekend in theaters, when it generated $109 million between Wednesday and Sunday in 2013. But since then, Disney has slowly...

For the 12th time in recorded Thanksgiving box office history (since 1982), Disney will own the holiday stretch again as their sequel Ralph Breaks the Internet looks to hit a five-day of $70M, a number far exceeding the previous five-day of 2012’s Wreck-It Ralph even though it launched on a three-day weekend during the first weekend of November clearly a Fss of $49M, Friday through Tuesday of $56.7M. Disney sees Ralph Breaks the Internet in the high $60Ms range.
Fandango reports that Ralph Breaks the Internet is outpacing the advance ticket sales of Disney’s previous two Thanksgiving launches at this point in time, Coco ($72.9M)and Moana ($82M), and of course Wreck-It Ralph. John Hughes was, by his own admission, a very ordinary, non-exceptional kid. He didn’t even have a particularly noteworthy high school life, which is somewhat ironic given how effortlessly he managed to convey it in his film work.
He may not have been the kid he portrayed in his movies, but he related to them and wanted to show the world they weren’t as bad as other films routinely made them out to be. One of Hughes’ defining characteristics was his ability to see teenagers not as kids or as young adults, but as people. This, in turn, ensured that his films connected with a sizeable audience.
But Hughes wasn’t just about love triangles, prom nights and cliques – he was so multi-layered and moved away from the teen films that brought him so much success, writing side-splitting comedies and romantic dramas, replacing the teens with twenty somethings and families.
John Hughes was, by his own admission, a very ordinary, non-exceptional kid. He didn’t even have a particularly noteworthy high school life, which is somewhat ironic given how effortlessly he managed to convey it in his film work.

It was August 11, 2014. The theater was full with an advance screening of The Giver starring Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep. The red carpet event was live-streamed prior to the showing as stars from the film flooded in and entered the New York City party while we, in Knoxville, Tenn., gazed at the screen.
I checked my phone for the time and came across a message on the screen.
“Actor Robin Williams found dead at his home. He was 63.”
A friend put it best when he said that hearing the news of Williams’s passing surprised him with grief.
It did the same for me.
Now, to this point, Robin Williams was just another face (or voice) on the screen to me. An actor who had given life to Genie in Aladdin, the main character of Flubber, and was Mrs. Doubtfire. Nothing of note, but fun most of the time.

A life-long fan of Robin Williams has scored a viral hit with his impersonations of the late actor.
Jamie Costa - a young actor with a resemblance to Williams - has passed 2 million hits in just four days on YouTube.
In the video, he channels Williams's performances in films like Flubber, Mrs Doubtfire and Good Morning, Vietnam.
Costa wrote underneath the video: "My tribute to the man whose spark ignited my passion. Rip Robin Williams."
He also performs a scene from Good Will Hunting, the film which earned Williams an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
Costa isn't just a Williams impressionist, and has posted videos of himself impersonating Indiana Jones, Owen Wilson and Matthew McConaughey.
It recently emerged that Williams made plans to restrict the use of his image after his death.

Robin Williams died in August, but his spirit is very much alive in the heart of actor Jamie Costa, who is garnering online acclaim for nailing spot-on impersonations of 18 characters Williams played over the course of his career. The South Carolina-based performer not only sounds just like Williams as he channels Peter Pan from “Hook,” Euphegenia Doubtfire from “Mrs. Doubtfire” and Professor Philip Brainard from “Flubber” (to name a few), he looks just like the late actor, from the hair to the facial expressions. Costa’s YouTube video “Never Had a Friend Like Him” has attracted over 1.3 million views since being published.

It is something of a tragedy that the last role anyone gets to see of Robin Williams is in the inferior Night At The Museum sequel that has just hit cinemas (he’s actually in Terry Jones’ Absolutely Anything but in a vocal performance only next year), but it’s not entirely unfitting. The actor and comedian was a brilliant talent, not only as a stand-up but also as a genuine straight actor, and his career was typified by some serious highs; unfortunately, it was also blighted by some terrible lows, painting a picture of contradiction that was ultimately the most bewildered reaction to his suicide.
Because sanctifying departed heroes is foolish, it remains important to look at Williams’ career as a whole: the greatest tragedy of his professional life was not that he wasn’t offered the opportunity to truly show his ability, it was that...

For one reason or another, be it a creative led decision or simply not being able to gain the rights to using certain real products, film and TV is almost as stocked with as many fictional consumer products as we have here on the bulging shelves of the real world.
We’ve all walked past a shop window and thought “I need one of those” or “i need to eat that immediately” but what if those products that tantalise us are something that we can never tinker with, or wear or taste? Nothing can be as alluring as something desirable that you cannot have. Ironically this fact isn’t lost upon those people in the real world who want to market desirable products to us, as in this day and age even fictional products that don’t adhere to the laws of physics in our world can cross over...

I was pretty young when Robin Williams first rose to stardom as Mork from Ork, but I was a dedicated fan. I bought a pair of official Mork suspenders and wore them all the time.

"Suicide is a permanent solution to temporary problems." - Robin Williams, "World's Greatest Dad" This is a very emotional "Ask Drew." This is, I would suspect, the closest you're ever going to see to me losing it on camera completely. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised when there was a Robin Williams question, since it's still so fresh and so raw for so many people, but I couldn't have known just how hard it would be to talk about him. I mean, I have stared at the blinking cursor on my blank document page for almost two days now, grappling with one question: how in the hell do you even remotely begin to sum up someone as huge as Robin Williams? We could start from the personal angle. I could tell you about the occasional e-mails I got from him when I was at Ain't It Cool, or the...

William' publicist released a statement: "Robin Williams passed away this morning. He has been battling severe depression of late. This is a tragic and sudden loss. I had to stop and think about it. When was the first time I encountered Robin Williams? I'm pretty sure it was reruns of "Mork & Mindy" at a young age, if not the boisterous Oscar-nominated performance he gave in Barry Levinson's "Good Morning, Vietnam." By then he had already dazzled countless audiences in "The World According to Garp." Whatever it was, like so many, it was the start of, as his widow noted in a release, "countless moments of joy and laughter" he would deliver for the next three decades of my life. And now, he's gone. It soon became erratic late night appearances with David Letterman and the like, as the movies flowed in. Terry Gilliam's "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen," for instance, or another, much more timid Oscar-nominated performance in Peter Weir's "Dead Poets Society." He continued to spotlight range and versatility in Penny Marshall...

You don’t get extra life points for never having walked out of a movie; just like you don’t get any for having walked out on one. So for the movie aficionados who dare not leave the cinema before the closing curtain, calm down, this won’t hurt you. What I do have though from my experiences as a young movie dodger are a few anecdotes of when and why I walked out. I adore movies and have made a life from that, I can’t see myself walking out of a movie anymore. I have become desensitized to the garbage that unfortunately finds its way in front of my eyes sometimes.
I’m more critical in where my time and money goes at the theater, so I’d have no one to blame but myself for seeing a bad movie these days. It’s all about choices, and these were bad ones.

For a movie who’s most famous tag line is “there can be only one,” there are sure a ton of Highlander sequels, TV spinoffs (live action and animated), novels, comic books, and reboots. But that should come as no surprise; this is Hollywood, and the immortal Scottish swordsman epic is one of the most indelible franchises of the past 30 years.
The original Highlander arrived in 1986, and is easily the most hallowed of all Highlander properties, featuring the holy triumvirate of genre stars: Christopher Lambert (NCIS: La, Greystoke: The Legend Of Tarzan, Lord Of The Apes, Mortal Kombat), Sean Connery (The James Bond, Dr. Jones, The Rock, The Untouchables, The Hunt For Red October), and Clancy Brown (The Shawshank Redemption, Starship Troopers, ER, Flubber, Pet Sematary II, John Dies At The End, and ubiquitous voice actor). Just a silly comedy? There might be more to Mrs Doubtfire than it's given credit for...
This article contains spoilers for Mrs Doubtfire.
If you dig through the box office takings for the films of Robin Williams, then - taking aside his supporting performance in Night At The Museum - his most lucrative film at the Us box office remains 1993's Mrs Doubtfire. Inflation-adjusted, it tops the list.
The film was released in the aftermath of Disney's record-breaking Aladdin (and followed the fascinatingly flawed Toys), and in the years that followed, Williams would enjoy a bunch of further hits, including the likes of Jumanji, The Birdcage (two films that, fact-fans, passed $100m at the Us box office on the same weekend), Patch Adams and Flubber. He'd nab an Oscar in the midst of that run for Good Will Hunting, too. This was Robin Williams...

Generally, screenwriting is reserved for a thankless group of nerds who spend most of their waking hours making "Star Wars" references and lamenting their low position on the Hollywood totem pole.
But once in a while, the ladies and gentlemen behind the scripts end up becoming household name ... or move on from other successful careers to take a stab at screenwriting. And whether it's to make a buck, help out a buddy or take on a new challenge, these scribes sometimes end up scoring some pretty unexpected gigs.
So, upon the revelation that titan of twist M. Night Shyamalan was allegedly though perhaps wasn't after all involved in writing "She's All That" (1999), a movie about how beautiful women become even more beautiful when they take off their glasses and wear their hair down, we've assembled a list of some other well-known writers whose names are attached to some surprising projects.

“The whole thing is irredeemably dreadful” cries the Guardian. “It’s a shamelessly broad, deliberately lowest-common-denominator sitcom” it continues, barely unable to contain their vitriolic anger. “It should be thrown on a pile of dung and set ablaze with a thousand gypsy women dancing and singing folk songs of yore around it” it doesn’t add. But it should. Then again that’s probably why I don’t write for the Guardian. And what is the target of this focused fury and bile?
Ben Elton’s new sitcom; The Wright Way.
I do think it’s pretty funny that we live in a society where unbridled anger can be unleashed so masterfully at a mass market sitcom. But it is anger from a place of regret at what this once dynamic comic has become. This man who was once the staple of 80’s political satire is now reduced to BBC...

Herbie Rides Again
Written by Bill Walsh, based on the novel Car, Boy, Girl by Gordon Buford
Directed by Robert Stevenson
USA, 1974, imdb

*****
“The first rule of all drive-in sequels: make the same damn movie you made the first time!”
-Joe Bob Briggs
Herbie Rides Again stands proudly alongside Halloween III: Season of the Witch as the two films that most deliberately break the sequel rule. It is debatable which is more cruel. Halloween III has no Michael Myers (and for that matter no witches) but never explains why. No doubt many in the audience when it was first released must have been wondering when Michael Myers was going to show, right up until the moment the film ended.
While discarding most of what made the first film work: Dean Jones as racer Jim Douglas,...

Robin Williams has spent the better part of the past decade confusing the hell out of audiences with his movie choices – "Rv," anyone? – but it seems as though things may be on the upswing for the funnyman.
The actor may be injecting some fabulous back into his career in the not-too-distant future with a sequel to his 1996 hit "The Birdcage."
Williams tells Movie Hole that he may reprise his role as South Beach drag club owner Armand Goldman if the powers that be can work out a script. "They're trying to figure out which [story] to write for that," says Williams. "We will see what happens."
While the prospect of seeing Williams back in his gold chain and salmon pants has our hearts skipping a beat, we can't imagine the movie working without the original star-studded cast. If the producers can get Gene Hackman, Dianne Wiest, Dan Futterman, Calista Flockheart together...

With Apollo 18 offering up a horror experience on the Moon, James explores other possible reasons why visits to our nearest neighbour have ceased…
Recent release Apollo 18 is a horror movie set on the Moon. Even if the whole basis of the film being leaked footage from a secret mission is bogus, the concept is brilliant. Whoever decided to pick the Earth’s sole satellite as the setting for their scary story deserves a gold star and a Milky Bar for this stroke of inspired genius.
Indeed, the Big Black beyond the stratosphere is anxiety-inducing as an infinite unknown with terrifying potential. As the Alien poster put it, “In space, no one can hear you scream” so the void is the perfect backdrop on which to build a sci-fi chiller.
With it being Earth’s nearest neighbour rather than a far-flung or fictional destination, the Moon feels more real and relevant,...
