In real estate, location is everything, and that’s equally true of the TV business, where tax incentives, production costs and travel logistics can make the difference between whether a series set in Boston is actually shot in Boston or on a Paramount Studios soundstage. There was a time, in fact, when Los Angeles and New York were dueling hubs for small-screen productions, when if you wanted to carve out a career in TV you had to live in either city. There were no filming locations, no post-production houses. Then came cities including Vancouver and Toronto. And then Chicago, where such series as “Shameless,” “Suits,” “The Chi” and “Empire” shoot, adding an aesthetic authenticity to the storyline and poetic pulse of each show. More recently, similar up-and-coming hubs have been formed in places from coast to coast.

Nearly 20 years after directing his debut feature, Southie, veteran actor John Shea (Agent X, An Invisible Sign) steps behind the camera again. Once more focusing on the insidious influence of Boston's criminal underworld, Shea assembles many of the requisite elements of a contemporary crime drama, but orchestrates them so chaotically that audiences may be put off by the film's unwelcome onslaught of stale genre techniques.
Shea knows well enough to lead off with an action sequence, as Boston police detective James Doyle (Eric Dane) responds to a 911 call reporting a hostage situation. Along with his partner (and girlfriend) Maggie...

The polarising, foul-mouthed teddy is back, and wants to become a father. Cue semen slapstick, some slightly uncomfortable equal-rights comparisons – and cinema’s first Charlie Hebdo gag
It’s undeniably funny. The cute babyish face, the way he sounds like a grown-up when he curses, that absurd dirtbag Southie accent. But enough about Mark Wahlberg – let’s talk about his co-star, the animated stuffed animal Ted that, if you recall, came to life in Seth MacFarlane’s 2012 hit comedy. It’s a one-note joke, but it’s a good one: a cuddly living bear with a simple, expressive face that’s mostly a raging id arsehole, but occasionally a voice of reason. He may sound a lot like Peter Griffin, star of MacFarlane’s Family Guy for 13 (13?!!) seasons, but at times he’s more like the sage dog, Brian. As with all sentient toys in film, he just wants love,...

Martin Scorsese is one of the most iconic directors of all time. He created such groundbreaking films like Taxi Driver and Gangs of New York. Yet it took him eight Oscar nominations, five Best Director nominations alone, until he finally received the Best Director Academy Award in 2006 for the film The Departed. Let's look back at the film that finally landed Scorese the gold.
Scorsese is one of those directors that has been creating for generations. He's the known for creating and depicting the worst antiheroes that you can't help but like and can't stop watching. You follow them on their twisted journeys and sometimes untimely demises, all while that same Rolling Stone song (“Gimme Shelter”) plays in the background. Your parents loved him, you love him, and I'm sure your children will or already do love him. There's always one particular movie of his that you discover that makes...

It's rare when a film adaptation lives up the book it was based on so with that in mind I have compiled a list of 40 books that have been adapted for the big screen that we can expect to see in theaters this year. This includes two books from Gillian Flynn, young adult adaptations of work by Veronica Roth, Suzanne Collins and James Dashner, a short story from Dennis Lehane, a Nick Hornby adaptation, and an adaptation written by Nick Hornby, a new John le Carre adaptation and a prequel to the stories written by Tom Clancy as well as a couple comics and graphic novel adaptations from the likes of Frank Miller and Hiroshi Sakurazaka and Alexander O. Smith. I've added everything I could think of and while I'm sure I missed a few, please forgive me and hopefully you'll find something that appeals to your taste on the list.

In the grand scheme of Martin Scorsese's career, "The Departed" occupies a strange place in the director's filmography. It's the one he won for, definitely not his best — and if you ask some people — far from his best. The director's remake of the Hong Kong crime thriller "Infernal Affairs," despite winning Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay, Editing, and Director at the 2007 Academy Awards, has failed, in many ways, to earn respect on its own merits.
One of the more ironic achievements of "The Departed" actually occurred in the year's following its release. The success of the Boston-set crime drama kicked off a wave of similar movies set in Massachusetts, many of which also starred Mark Wahlberg. "The Departed" essentially created the Boston crime drama, the genre that would employ Afflecks and Wahlbergs for years to come, but the Scorsese film is the best of the bunch.

A bodybuilding movie starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has been a long, long time coming, and Your Mother's Favorite Southie Mark Wahlberg beefing up for the Michael Bay flick should only be icing on the cake. The new trailer for Pain and Gain is out, and what else would you expect in the 2-minute first look? Muscles, cars, danger, action, suspense, and shirtlessness. Check the badassery out below:
It'll be interesting to see how a, um, smaller film looks through the eyes of Michael Bay: currently in between Transformer films, this movie is surely a small fry, reportedly costing a tenth of what Transformers: Dark of the Moon needed to function. It'll be even more interesting to see if The Rock is still a bankable star: while Mark Wahlberg is arguably still safe with the massive success of Ted, it's been a while since we've see Johnson front and center.

Perhaps after having heard about Jersey Shore producer SallyAnn Salsanno's Southie Pride, and its plans to explore South Boston's august heritage of hitting people who use words like "august heritage," Mark Wahlberg is stepping in with his own show about tough Boston women lobbing harsh vowel sounds at each other, because who the fuck is Sally Salsanno? When contemplating the idea of a Mark Wahlberg–stuffed-bear buddy comedy directed by Seth MacFarlane, as Ted has been described, the average movie viewer probably imagined a Wilfred–Family Guy mash-up — a wise-cracking anthropomorphic bear, an emotionally arrested man-child, dick jokes. All of these elements (plus extra fart jokes and Mila Kunis) are present in the first Ted trailer, which, we should point out now, is Nsfw, but Mark Wahlberg fans will notice another cinematic influence at work in the two minutes below. The special pronunciation of the word fahck, the soundtrack — can you feel The Fighter magic all around you? If you are not convinced, wait until the 2:15 mark, when Wahlberg's character starts listing "white trash names" in a Southie accent and actually includes "Sharlene" (Amy Adams's character) in the list. If someone could have convinced Christian Bale to wear a mo-cap suit, we wouldn't even need...

David O. Russell's The Fighter is based on the true story of Micky Ward, a stepping-stone boxer, and his older brother Dick Eklund, whose claim to fame was dropping Sugar Ray Leonard several years and many crackpipe hits long ago. Because it's beholden to the framework of Ward's technical boxing style and the fights he fought, the story has a tendency to lag and meander. But what elevates it to championship status is the acting, because it's kind of ecstatically horrifying to watch Christian Bale and Melissa Leo tear themselves and everyone else apart. Ultimately, the family dynamic and the bitter squabble of this destructive family is what makes The Fighter worth watching.
A documentary crew is filming Dick Eklund (Christian Bale) for his supposed comeback. Meanwhile, he's training his kid half-brother Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg), a slugger with a fierce hook who most promoters book to boost their more promising fighters.

Bryan Singer, he of The Usual Supsects and the first two X-Men movies, is eyeing the upcoming Mark Wahlberg vigilante movie, The Prisoners. The script, according to Entertainment Weekly, "has been compared to The Silence of the Lambs and Se7en," but that's probably only because everyone in Hollywood likes to have something to compare everything to. And the better it is, the better the comparisons.
Still, it is definitely shaping up to be a big project, with Wahlberg in the role of a father who goes all Chuck Bronson on some bad guys after they kidnap his daughter. It's essentially a Southie version of Taken, near as we can tell, but that doesn't mean it's going to be bad, just familiar.

Things really shift into high gear this week when a bumper crop of award season heavy-hitters and indies stream into theaters, as well as a cadre of movie stars doing what they do best - whether that's Keanu Reeves acting alien, Clint Eastwood brandishing his trademark scowl, or Benicio Del Toro doing his own brand of mumblecore while waging war against fascists.

Rose McGowan Gears Up For Hooker Role
Charmed star Rose McGowan is set to make a return to movie screens - as a high-priced hooker. The sexy actress, who once dated outrageous rocker Marilyn Manson, will star in actor and director John Shea's The Junkie Priest, alongside former New Kids On The Block star Donnie Wahlberg - who will play a monk. Shea, who wrote the screenplay, says of the brunette beauty, "She has all the superficial glamour that a high-priced hooker has, but she also has all the vulnerability the role requires." He adds of the film, "It's a dark biography of a Franciscan Monk who, in the early '60s, was the first to start a halfway house for hookers on the streets of New York. The monks were forbidden to work with women back then, so he broke rules trying to save these lives." The project will be a re-teaming for Wahlberg and McGowan, who co-starred in Shea's 1998 award-winning indie flick Southie.
