Rosie O’Donnell’s documentary special “Unleashing Hope: The Power of Service Dogs for Children With Autism” will begin streaming Tuesday, April 22 on Hulu. April is Autism Awareness Month.
“Unleashing Hope” spotlights the Guide Dogs of America’s (Gda) service dog program for children on the autism spectrum and takes viewers on a personal journey, showcasing how a service dog named Kuma transformed the lives of O’Donnell and her child with autism, Clay.
“My child is completely different because of the dog. They saved my child’s life. The healing started,” O’Donnell told Variety’s Marc Malkin exclusively when production on the documentary started last fall. Clay, who identifies as nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns, was diagnosed with autism when they were two years old. “They have calmed down. They have a sense of connection. I was in shock. At the end of the year, they were getting most improved student at school.

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS), the organization behind the Daytime Emmy Awards, has announced some key changes that will impact “The 52nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards” and ceremonies thereafter, including the addition of the previously announced Emerging Talent category, elimination of the Original Song category, and when to expect an announcement on nominations for this year’s awards ceremony.
First things first: Nominations for the “The 52nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards” are set to be announced in late June/early July, with an official date yet to be determined.
The timeline makes sense, considering the ceremony was moved to October after previously taking place in June. The News & Doc Emmy Awards replaces the Daytime Emmy Awards on the June date, starting with the “The 46th Annual News & Doc Emmy Awards.”
Despite the move, the eligibility window for contention remains January 1, 2024 – December 31, 2024, with the judging period to start Thursday,...

With the loss of multi-talented instrumentalist Roy Ayers, who died on Wednesday at the age of 84, the hip-hop world is honoring one of its greatest inspirations and sample sources. Hip-hop production stalwarts such as J. Dilla, Dr. Dre, DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Q-Tip, Madlib, and others have sampled from his six-decade-spanning catalog of jazz and funk-laced compositions. He’s got an Oscar, played Albert Einstein, and even shared a flat with Mel Gibson. Now, the Australian actor is here to answer your questions
It’s not all that often you get the chance to put your questions to an honest-to-goodness best actor Oscar winner, but that’s what we’ve got coming down the pipe. Geoffrey Rush won the big one back in 1997 for his role as pianist David Helfgott in Shine, and he’s won a ton of others, including Baftas, Golden Globes, an Emmy, a Tony and four Screen Actors Guild awards. In fact it’s easier to ask what award hasn’t he won?
Now, Australia has produced more than its fair share of premium acting talent, from Cate Blanchett and Hugh Jackman to Nicole Kidman and Guy Pearce, but Rush is definitely up there with the best of them. Aside from Shine, he...

Is there a kernel of truth to the notion that "popcorn stars" don't win Oscars? It certainly felt that way to fans hoping to see Demi Moore pull off a Best Actress victory at the 2025 Oscars. Her daring performance as Elisabeth Sparkle in The Substance had earned her a Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and SAG Award, putting her in frontrunner position as she arrived at the 97th Academy Awards on March 2. But suddenly, those hopes were dashed when Emma Stone read out the winner: Mikey Madison in Anora.
It wasn't unfamiliar to see one of the biggest box-office draws from decades past lose the big one. Perhaps the Academy couldn't see past what Moore had once been told she was — a popcorn actress. She addressed the demeaning title in her Golden Globes acceptance speech nearly two months prior, stating that a producer called her a “popcorn actress” 30 years ago, which...

Once Geoffrey Rush hit his mid-60s, he was offered more and more roles where his age was the focal point. Yet when he read the script for “The Rule of Jenny Pen,” the nursing home-set horror film offered a different angle.
Rush plays Stefan Mortensen, a tough-talking judge who suffers a stroke and must live in an assisted living facility. Unfortunately, one of the other wards is Dave Crealy (John Lithgow), who terrorizes the residents in increasingly sinister ways — along with the help of his hand puppet, Jenny Pen. As Dave gets more emboldened to do terrible things in the nursing home, Stefan loses more and more of his faculties, having to take down his nemesis as his motor skills fade.
“I’ve had quite a few scripts sent my way in the last eight years that felt like treading water,” the 73-year-old actor says. “But in this, his brain deteriorates — actually,...

There should be some sort of moratorium on streaming while we figure out what on earth is going on with our viewing habits. Just recently, a forgotten Owen Wilson and Zach Galifianakis movie found a second life on Prime Video despite bearing a miserable 8% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Now, a new streaming hit has Wilson and Galifianakis beat in that regard, having climbed the Netflix charts with an even lower score.

The Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown was recently nominated for eight Academy Awards. But just think of how many more nominations it would have gotten had the filmmakers included a scene in which Dylan shares a bed with the future star of Caddyshack.
As odd as it may sound, this scene wasn’t totally off the table, seeing as how Chase once claimed to have spent the night with the legendary musician.
During an episode of the short-lived Netflix talk show Norm Macdonald Has a Show, the late comedian, and Bob Dylan superfan, asked Chase if he had any good Dylan stories. His response was more than a little surprising: “I slept with him.”
Chase went on to explain that he was attending Bard College at the time, just across the river from his hometown of Woodstock, New York. “He comes over, and he’s trying to teach himself the piano,...

Exclusive: HanWay Films has expanded its classics library after being appointed to represent The Cohen Film Collection.
The library of Cohen Media Group’s founder, Charles S. Cohen, comprises more than one hundred restored classic titles spanning from the silent era to the present day, including The Buster Keaton Collection and The Merchant Ivory Collection.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed and Cohen Media Group is the owner of HanWay, having acquired the company in 2022.
Late last year Charles Cohen’s media group hit choppy waters when the company was forced to sell multiple assets including British arthouse exhibitor and distributor Curzon to Fortress Investment Group. The company was acquired in a foreclosure auction involving multiple Cohen assets, including the Landmark cinema chain. Fortress had lent Cohen $534M but sued him last year for default. Cohen acquired Curzon in late 2019 amid a buying spree by the U.S. real estate developer.

Scott Hicks' 2001 supernatural drama "Hearts in Atlantis" should have been a big hit. Based on a novel by Stephen King, the movie blended the author's bent for 1950s and 1960s nostalgia with his knack for mysterious fantasy. Told in flashback, "Hearts" tells the story of a 12-year-old named Bobby (played by eventual "Star Trek" actor Anton Yelchin) who is largely neglected by his self-absorbed mother (Hope Davis) and who spends his idle summer days with his two best friends, Carol (Meeka Boorem) and Sully (Will Rothhaar). To make ends meet, Bobby's mom takes on a lodger named Ted Brautigan (Anthony Hopkins) and Bobby soon learns that Ted has some kind of psychic power. He can read minds, and make objects float.
Ted explains calmly to Bobby that he has to keep the powers secret, as he is being pursued by people he calls "Low Men." Unusually, Ted's superpowers aren't the center of the film's plot,...

Don’t worry, nothing to see here. That’s the sentiment one Marvel insider is spreading amid a new rumor connected to the highly anticipated closing chapter to Sony’s Spider-Verse franchise which suggests the final film in the trilogy has hit a major setback.
Earlier this week, a new rumor began circulating online that suggested Sony’s Beyond the Spider-Verse was undergoing some serious setbacks that could result in a severe delay in the film’s release. Gifted children (or prodigy) movies are driven by an intriguing paradox: what if they don’t realize their full potential if not adequately challenged? But what if the pursuit of intense challenges inculcates within them a fear of failure which can adversely impact their childhood and beyond? In a world where individuals can be casually stigmatized for being ‘different’, extraordinary intellect can’t always be a gift. Movies like A Beautiful Mind (2001), Shine (1996), Good Will Hunting (1997), The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), The End of the Tour (2015), The Man Who Knew Infinity (2016) dealt with super-smart people burdened with mental or emotional problems. The films mentioned below grapple with such problems or quandary (of kids & teens), some with unflinching profundity and some hide its relevant messages beneath saccharine narrative layers.

Ryan Reynolds thinks one of Eddie Murphy's comedic performances was overlooked by the Academy. During a recent appearance on Variety's Awards Circuit podcast, the Deadpool & Wolverine actor shared that Murphy not receiving an Oscar nod for his multi-character work on The Nutty Professor is one of the "greatest, most, greatest injustices." When asked what he considered the greatest Oscars snub of all time, Reynolds shared:
"One of the greatest, most, greatest injustices is that Eddie Murphy doesn't have an Oscar for 'The Nutty Professor.'"
The Murphy-led comedy is a remake of the 1963 movie of the same name that starred Jerry Lewis. Directed by Tom Shadyac, the 1996 version sees Murphy tackle seven different roles, including Professor Sherman Klump and his charming but devious alter ego Buddy Love. The film earned mostly positive reviews from critics (and currently holds a 66% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), who praised Murphy for his hilarious portrayals.

There is always a shortlist of actors deserving of an Academy Award. Ralph Fiennes is one of them. He earned a Supporting Actor nomination in 1994 for “Schindler’s List,” but lost out to Martin Landeau for “Ed Wood.” He landed a Best Actor nod in 1997 for “The English Patient,” but Geoffrey Rush had that one in the bag for “Shine.” And in the almost three decades since, he’s been overlooked for incredible work in films such as “The End of the Affair,” “The Constant Gardner,” “Coriolanus,” and “The Grand Budapest Hotel.” That may change with his celebrated performance as Cardinal Thomas Lawrence in Edward Berger’s adaptation of Robert Harris‘ novel, “Conclave.”

The fact Fiennes is not synonymous with the Oscars is sort of head-scratching.

Sharing playlists is a love language for music supervisor Tiffany Anders. Same goes for Beef showrunner Lee Sung Jin (aka “Sonny”), who had a lengthy compilation of tracks on hand when crafting the musical tone for his black dramedy. “I started one, too, where I had Built to Spill and My Bloody Valentine and other more indie ’90s rock stuff on there,” Anders tells Tudum. “It was really fun being able to send our music — just as music fans — back and forth to each other.”

Fans are not too happy that Jophielle Love is exiting General Hospital. They’ve watched her grow as Violet over the years and have become attached to the highly talented youngster who seems wise beyond her years. Because Violet’s on-screen dad Finn, played by Michael Easton, has moved to Seattle, it was a bittersweet farewell. Violet was happy to rejoin her father but sad to leave everyone in Port Charles behind.
The Future Looks Bright
“I am excited to see what happens [next],” was what Love told Soap Opera Digest about life beyond Gh. In discussing her run as Violet Finn, which she began in 2019 at age five, Love pointed out that now that she’s leaving the show at age ten, she’s spent half of her life working on it. But she learned a lot during that time, praising the soap, which “pretty much taught me everything about...

The Killer's Game has a great soundtrack filled with music from different genres and notable artists like Dolly Parton and James Brown. Dave Bautista's 2024 action movie takes cues from many films that came before it to mix in hard-hitting fight sequences and action scenes with a few memorable needle drops. The movie does not overload the narrative or action sequences with songs that are overbearing or needlessly distracting, with director J.J. Perry instead using the music to enhance what those watching The Killer's Game experience.
While most action movies include hip-hop, rap, or rock songs to pair with its action sequences, The Killer's Game takes a slightly different approach to its music selections. The movie includes a song from Dolly Parton as part of its romantic journey after she is namedropped, while there is even plenty of international music included thanks to the widespread nature of the assassins who...

Exclusive: Rise and Shine World Sales has acquired sales rights to the documentary A Sisters’ Tale ahead of its international premiere Tuesday at the Toronto International Film Festival.
In the documentary, Iranian filmmaker Leila Amini trains a lens on her sister Nasreen, a gifted singer-songwriter who hopes for nothing more than to share her music with audiences. But Nasreen’s dream collides with bitter reality in Iran where the country’s Islamist rulers have decreed that women cannot perform in public.
A Sisters’ Tale premiered last month at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, an event attended by Rise and Shine co-founders Stefan Kloos and Anja Dziersk.
“We saw the film at the world premiere in Locarno and were spellbound,” Kloos and Dziersk said in a statement. “It is a delicate, yet really powerful voice out of Iran by an Iranian female filmmaker who lets us witness the restrictions that women are suffering from.

Pinhead Gunpowder, the band featuring Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong and touring guitarist Jason White, have announced a new album titled Unt. In advance of its October 18th release, the punk outfit has unveiled the title track, its first new song in 16 years.

The band issued the following statement regarding their long hiatus and the new album:

“Slow Horses” star Gary Oldman is the frontrunner to win Best Drama Actor at the upcoming Emmys. Oldman earned his first and only Oscar six years ago for his portrayal of World War II-era British prime minister Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour.” That win was sandwiched between two other lead bids for “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” (2012) and “Mank” (2021). His sole Emmy nomination to date came in 2001 for his guest appearance in the two-part seventh season finale of “Friends”; he lost to Derek Jacobi (“Frasier”).
On Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses,” which is based on a series of novels by Mick Herron, Oldman plays Jackson Lamb, a particularly uncouth MI5 officer saddled with the responsibility of supervising a group of service rejects. This constitutes his very first regular role on a continuing series and his first live action TV performance at all in over two decades.

Can Tom Cruise, who has spent the last decade dominating the box office with explosive hits like the Mission: Impossible series and Top Gun: Maverick, finally snag that elusive Oscar? The odds are looking better than ever, thanks to a new film venture under the acclaimed director Alejandro G. Iñárritu—the genius who steered Leonardo DiCaprio to his first ‘Best Actor’ Oscar for The Revenant after five previous nominations.

Recent reports suggest that the cast for Iñárritu’s next cinematic escapade reads like a who’s who of Hollywood talent, including Riz Ahmed, Sophie Wilde, Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, and Michael Stuhlbarg.
The screenplay, a brainchild of Iñárritu along with Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris, and Nicolas Giacobone, tells the tale of a man with untold power who’s caused a colossal mess but must convince humanity that he’s their knight in shining armor.

Writers/Directors Spenser Cohen & Anna Halberg keep it simple with the PG-13 horror movie Tarot. Instead of a cold open to hook audiences on the horror, Tarot launches straight into introducing the group of seven friends partaking in a party weekend at an isolated manor.
It’s there that they dabble with things they shouldn’t, setting in motion a curse that will pick them off one by one, slasher style. With an equal group of monsters to match, Tarot has the makings of a breezy gateway horror movie perfect for sleepovers, though it’s undermined by surface-level characters and storytelling.
The moment the beer runs dry, forcing the friends to seek entertainment elsewhere, birthday girl Elise (Larsen Thompson) insists that Haley (Harriet Slater) puts her tarot knowledge to good use when they find a mysterious deck within the house. Haley warns that it’s extremely bad luck to borrow...

The ongoing Motörhead live recording series, The Löst Tapes, is being collected on a new eight-disc CD box set arriving February 23rd. In addition, a fifth volume in the series, Live at Donington Download Fest ’08, has been announced as part the box set and as a standalone vinyl release.
The Motörhead camp launched The Löst Tapes series in 2021, restoring previously unreleased Motörhead concert recordings sourced from cassette tapes discovered in the archives of the late Lemmy Kilmister.
“[Cassettes] were a standard part of every tour … Motörhead were certainly no exception, recording show after show,” read the press release for the box set. “They contain gold, pure aural gold, and had for many years sat hundreds of feet underground in a small cave Lemmy owned, guarded by small, hairy centurions in Roman armor with small spears and bad attitudes. Only the magic password would release them, and thankfully, Lem had scribbled it...

At sixty-one years old, Tom Cruise is now approximately the same age as the late Paul Newman was when a younger Cruise co-starred with Newman in the 1986 drama film The Color of Money, which brought Newman his first and only competitive Academy Award win after seven previous unsuccessful nominations. However, while The Color of Money reveals a Newman who had embraced the old man persona, with gray hair, prescription glasses, and a tired body, Cruise doesn’t seem ready to make such a transition.
Indeed, as Cruise seems to be intent on maintaining the action hero persona that Cruise first cultivated in 1986 with Top Gun, which was released just several months prior to Color of Money, it’s as if Cruise exists in a time warp, and as Newman appears old beyond his years in The Color of Money, Cruise presently doesn’t appear to be a day over fifty.
