Back in the soap opera glory days of the 1980s, I remember well Demi Moore‘s short stint on the popular “General Hospital.” With her distinctive gravelly voice, movie star beauty and strong personality, it was obvious that the small screen couldn’t contain her, and that she would go on to bigger things.
Demi Gene Guynes was born on November 11 in 1962 in Roswell, New Mexico. Following a difficult childhood, she left school her junior year and did some modeling before meeting and marrying musician Freddy Moore, with whom she co-wrote three songs. She had a couple of small film roles before landing the “General Hospital” gig in 1983. Then a series of popular films beginning with “Blame It On Rio” in 1984 led to an impressive string of blockbuster films throughout the 1980s and 1990s, making her one of the biggest stars of the era.

Critics are calling Demi Moore‘s turn in “The Substance” a career-best performance as Elisabeth Sparkle, a former A-lister past her prime and drawn to the opportunity presented by a mysterious new drug. All it takes is one injection and she is reborn – temporarily – as the gorgeous, twentysomething Sue (Margaret Qualley). The only rule? Time needs to be split: exactly one week in one body, then one week in the other. No exceptions. Easy, right?
The satirical horror film was written, directed and co-produced by Coralie Fargeat, and is now Mubi’s biggest box office hit ever, grossing over $10 million stateside and nearly $20 million worldwide. Those numbers may sound like chump change after pundits referred to “Joker: Folie à Deux’s” $37 million opening as “a flop,” but the indie movie from Mubi had a much smaller budget and puts the distributor on the map like never before.
IndieWire calls it “An instant horror classic.

Jennifer Garner was introduced to a few new experiences playing the superhero Elektra. Not only did she end up headlining her own superhero movie, but she kissed another woman for the first time onscreen. And it was an experience she never forgot.

Garner played the Marvel character Elektra twice in the 2000s. She was first seen in the role in the 2004 Daredevil. Afterwards, Garner reprised the superhero in her titular feature Elektra, which would follow her character’s own independent journey. But perhaps one of the film’s most memorable moments to some was seeing Garner make out with Elektra co-star Natassia Malthe. She reflected on the experience in an interview with Pride Source. According to the Alias alum, it was a moment that many on set were eager to see.

The Cannes Film Festival is nearing its conclusion, with plenty of films making a splash on the starry Croisette on the French Riviera. However, one studio executive tells Variety, “There aren’t many Oscar-buzzy titles to be excited about, not even in the international feature space.”

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today we speak to Nancy Savoca, the great filmmaker whose sophomore feature Dogfight is now available via Criterion. The digitally-restored, director-approved Blu-Ray includes new commentary from Savoca and producer Richard Guay, a new interview with Savoca and actor Lili Taylor conducted by filmmaker Mary Harron, and a great essay by film critic Christina Newland, among other features.
We speak with Savoca about Missing Movies, her mentors John Sayles and Maggie Renzi, her first film True Love, directing singular performers like River Phoenix and Lili Taylor, and the HBO creativity boom of the mid-to-late ‘90s (including Carl Franklin’s Laurel Avenue and Cher and Savoca’s If These Walls Could Talk), and lesser-seen gems of Savoca’s that...

Scott Stapp has just released his new solo album, Higher Power, and with it comes a music video for the moving ballad “If These Walls Could Talk” featuring Dorothy.
The single features the Creed singer and Dorothy trading verses as they sing about battling demons, with poignant lyrics like, “They’ve seen me pick the bottle up and put the bible down/ They’ve heard me crying out more times than I can count.” The song slowly builds into a powerful climax showcasing each singer’s impressive vocal range.
Heavy Consequence recently caught up with Stapp, and he told us, “[Dorothy] is a real powerhouse vocalist. Just in terms of what she’s capable of doing vocally, it just blows my mind. She has such an iconic, big, soulful voice. And it’s so dynamic — she can do so much, from rock to incredible gospel-esque melodies, all the way to having opera training.

When Babe Paley meets Truman Capote for the first time in 1955 in the FX anthology series “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans,” it is the story of Ann Woodward that the famous writer tells in order to captivate her and her luminous friends. As Tom Hollander relishes one of Capote’s many rich monologues, we see Demi Moore as Woodward playing out two versions of the gruesome tale of the death of her husband – one in which she mistakenly shoots him, thinking he’s a burglar, the other in which she commits an act of intention homicide.
When, by the end of the premiere episode, Capote publishes his infamous excerpt from the unfinished novel “Answered Prayers” in “Esquire” in 1975, it is Woodward who takes her own life. While not one of the most prominent characters in the show, Woodward and her demise demonstrate the stakes of the feud at the heart of the series’ title.

With the actor’s strike finally over, Matthew Lillard can finally talk about the plum role he has in Five Nights at Freddy’s. In a recent THR interview, Lillard mentioned being thrilled about how fans have reacted to the film, noting:
“Being 53 years old — and being around the block a couple times — I have a much deeper sense of appreciation in this moment than I probably have ever had because I didn’t expect it. I realize that these opportunities don’t come around that often. It’s been a really rich, joyful moment because I can sort of sit back and appreciate it on a deeper level.”
Lillard’s character, who has a rich mythology in the game, could well wind-up being a recurring presence in the Five Nights at Freddy’s world, especially with the film such a huge hit in theaters and on Peacock. But, it turns...

Scott Stapp has announced his fourth solo album, Higher Power, arriving March 15th via Napalm Records.
The Creed singer also shared the new single “What I Deserve,” which follows up the previously released title track. The new song features guitarist Yiannis Papadopoulos, and touts emotional high and lows, drifting from brooding balladry to heavy, big-chord choruses. The tune comes with a shred solo from Papadopoulos, along with lyrics that ponder the intricacies of a relationship.
“We all want back what we give,” Stapp commented in a press release. “‘What I Deserve’ is about two people understanding who they are individually and coming to a place where they can express exactly what they each want, need, and deserve. The duality in the song is that both sides are expressing the same thing and coming to an understanding of the faults of the other.”

The Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade has given new poignancy to If These Walls Could Talk, HBO’s 1996 anthology film about three women in different eras — the 1950s, the 1970s and the 1990s — and their experiences with abortion.
Demi Moore, Sissy Spacek and Cher each starred in a segment, with Cher directing her portion. Cher and Moore also served as executive producers on the project. Co-writer and co-director Nancy Savoca recalls how the film broke new ground but was also met with backlash.

A statement released late Thursday gave the grim and upsetting news that Anne Heche is not expected to survive the injuries she sustained from an auto accident last week. The 53-year-old actress is currently in a coma at a burn center in West Hills Hospital, near Los Angeles.
“Unfortunately, due to her accident, Anne Heche suffered a severe anoxic brain injury and remains in a coma, in critical condition. She is not expected to survive,” the statement read. “It has long been her choice to donate her organs and she is being kept on life support to determine if any are viable.”
On August 5, Heche crashed her blue Mini Cooper, which had been traveling at what authorities called “a high rate of speed” in the residential Mar Vista area of Los Angeles. She then crashed into a home, igniting a fire that took firefighters roughly one hour to extinguish. A...

Cher‘s got you, Flint.
The 70-year-old Oscar winner has tapped her next project — a Lifetime original movie about the water-contamination crisis in Flint, Michigan.
The upcoming film, titled Flint, examines the politics and poor management that lead to the poisoning of the Michigan water, Deadline reports — and the residents whose voices and suffering were ignored.

It’s a fitting role for the actress and singer. She’s been outspoken on social media about the crisis, donating bottled water to the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan in the thousands.

If These Walls Could Catcall: Khoo’s Sex Omnibus Fails to Tantalize
Singaporean auteur Eric Khoo returns with his latest feature, In the Room, a decades spanning, multi-character chamber piece revolving around the inhabitants of a single hotel room and the private moments of love and intimacy that transpire there. Less titillating than the sum of its parts, documenting various acts across a range of orientations with a sort of unhurried inevitability, only the aural cues of creaky bed springs manage to wrench any tactile examination of humankind’s basic physical co-mingling.
Conservative, even rather rigid in its visual purveyance of sexual practices and traditional interactions, in Khoo’s preferred universe of multiple storylines, perhaps this time around he casts too many stories into the pool (unlike his celebrated 2005 title Be With Me, which consists of three separate stories), since despite the use of a unifying thread, the film’s...

If these walls could talk… Lindsay Lohan shared a glimpse of her bedroom on her site Monday morning. The boudoir is perfectly decorated with beige and pink tones and has a vintage-inspired theme. And while we first were struck by the large painting in the right corner, as well as the small pink vanity, but what most caught our attention was the dresser on the right. We're not saying it's from Ikea or anything, but lord help us if that doesn't look like a mirror image of an old Hemnes side table that we spent hours tirelessly putting together in our college days. But aside from that, LiLo's possibly-antique dresser and shag rug look equal parts cozy and stylish and we...

That old phrase "If these walls could talk" is actually pretty terrifying if you really think about it (especially if they can see and hear and don't just blather on about what they've done today), but the intended idea that some houses and estates have seen a lot of history is a valid one, especially in Europe. ("...where the history comes from" - Eddie Izzard) This explains the rationale behind PBS's "Secrets of..." series which tours historically famous abodes with one of its famous, living residents giving us the rundown on the location's storied past. Two recent releases in that series include Henry VIII's Palace and Althorp (home of the Spencers, the family of Princess Diana), and while the factoids prove interesting and the hosts charming, the series requires a strong interest in the two homes, because otherwise the presentations are quite dry.

If you listen to Jada Pinkett Smith, the pursuit of marital happiness just might be interpreted as looking the other way. When asked about the seemingly never-ending gossip that she and her A-list hubby of 15 years, Will Smith, have an open marriage, the If These Walls Could Talk star didn't necessarily deny the rumors as she explained her views on what keeps their relationship going strong. "I've always told Will, 'You can do whatever you want as long as you can look at yourself in the mirror and be Ok,'" she told HuffPost Live recently. "Because at the end of the day, Will is his own man. I'm here as his partner, but he is his own man. He has to decide who he wants to be and...

Catherine Keener is teaming with Charlie Kaufman for a new HBO series. According to Deadline.com, the new half-hour show will follow one day in a woman's life.
The untitled project, which Kenner will produce, will explore how events leading up to that day can affect the reality she lives in. Kaufman is executive producing, writing and directing.
Kaufman and Keener have worked together in the past on films including "Synecdoche, New York," "Being John Malkovich" and the upcoming "Frank Or Francis."
Over the course of her career, Keener has only made a handful of TV appearances. She appeared in the short-lived TV series "Ohara," did an episode of "Seinfeld" and a few TV movies including "If These Walls Could Talk."
If the Keener/Kaufman project makes it to series, it would join HBO's growing line-up of female-fronted comedies. The network currently has "Veep" starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, "Girls" from Lena Dunham...

Stone And Vergara To Get Hot And Heavy As Bisexual Lovers
Sharon Stone and sexy Colombian actress Sofia Vergara are set to heat up the big screen as bisexual lovers in a new comedy.
The Oscar winner will play a dermatologist who enjoys a threesome with Modern Family beauty Vergara and John Turturro's escort character in Fading Gigolo.
A source tells Life & Style magazine, "Sharon thinks it's going to be a lot of fun playing the lover of one of the hottest actresses out there. The scenes will be steamy!"
Legendary filmmaker Woody Allen has been cast as The Big Lebowski actor's pimp.
The movie will begin shooting in New York in April with Turturro also serving as director.

When Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk's American Horror Story premiered on FX two weeks ago, many of us wondered if the experiment in graphic and twisted terror could sustain itself after the frenetic and boundary-pushing first episode. And while the show has gradually eased off of some of the tricks and gimmicks it threw our way right out of the gate, I'm very pleased to say that three episodes in it is still every bit as creepy, weird, and alive. More alive than most of its characters, in fact - but we'll get to that in a minute.
Seriously - wow. This episode grounded the show like a fresh cement foundation under a gazebo, didn't it? We had the resolution of a few storylines, the beginnings of a few new ones, and the entwining of several seemingly disparate threads. But more than anything, it had an emotional depth that...

That's right, folks - I hope you haven't taken your daily potassium supplement yet because American Horror Story is back with more Bananas. In the second episode of FX's aggressively kooky horror show the action was a bit more focused (instead of 10 storylines we only had about 7) but it was no less intense than the Certified Batsh*t premiere. Plus, this week they added a new ingredient to the mix: Axe murder!
Yes, Ep 2 decided to do a little redecorating by splashing buckets of blood on the wainscoted walls of the Harmon House. Grab your paint chips and let's see if we can match it!
As with the premiere, we begin with a flashback - this time to 1968. I'm already loving the idea that we could bounce around to any time period and see what the house was up to - the possibilities are endless, really. It's like If These Walls Could Talk,...

Lifetime's made-for-television movie "Five," airing Monday, could be an Emmy contender next year. The film about five women battling breast cancer includes segments directed by Emmy nominees Patty Jenkins ("The Killing"), Demi Moore (producer of "If These Walls Could Talk") and previous acting champ Jennifer Aniston ("Friends"). John Griffiths of Us Weekly called the flick "mostly maudlin," but applauded Aniston for eliciting, "a glowing turn from Patricia Clarkson as a feisty survivor-type." Clarkson is already a two-time Emmy winner for guest appearances on "Six Feet Under" and she could compete for "Five." In 2003, she earned a supporting Oscar nod as a cancer patient in "Pieces of April." Other stars of "Five" include Emmy nominees Jeanne Tripplehorn ("Grey Gardens"), Bob Newhart ("Newhart"), Jeffrey Tambor ("Arrested Develo...

If these walls could talk... Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have listed their ocean-view Malibu home for $13.75 million. A barely divorced Pitt purchased the home in 2005 for $8.41 million, but six years of A-list living has apparently put quite the premium on the place. So, what sort of bang for the buck are Brad and Angelina offering? Aside from the sweeping view of the Southern California coast, the recently renovated (you know Pitt and his thing for architecture) Mid-Century modern home boasts four bedroom suites (Omg, the six kids shared?!), four bathrooms, bamboo flooring, glass walls to let the outside in, a top-of-the-line kitchen with a walk-in refrigerator/freezer, three fireplaces...

J.P. had a night out on the town with Ames, while Ashley spent the evening watching ‘Bachelor Pad’ with her girls. Should J.P. be spending time with Ashley’s ex-boyfriend?
Bachelorette Ashley Hebert and J.P. Rosenbaum seem to be falling more and more in love every day. Ashley’s even moving to NYC to live with J.P. But while it seems the happy couple is living a beautiful fairytale, J.P. decided to hang out with Ashley’s ex-boyfriend Ames Brown — who Ashley said goodbye to during the hometown dates on The Bachelorette — on Aug. 22. Is it a bad idea for J.P. to spending time with Ames, especially when J.P. got jealous of Ashley’s relationships with the other guys while filming the show?
“Had to dvr #BachelorPad cause I’m out with @AmesBrown,” J.P. tweeted Aug. 22. “Good times last night with @AmesBrown. Great seeing u! Def going back to #eataly soon!

The 8th annual Big Sky Documentary Film Festival is all set to run for ten days this Feb. 11-20 in Missoula, Montana. This year, the fest will have a whopping 140 film programs, a growth that necessitates an expansion from its regular home at the Historic Wilma Theatre — where it will occupy two screens — to also feature screenings at the former Pipestone Mountaineering store.
Special events at the fest include a free opening night screening of How to Die in Oregon sponsored by HBO Documentary Films. The film, directed by Peter D. Richardson, examines the impact the legalization of physician-assisted suicide has had on the state. (In 1994, Oregon was the first state to legalize the practice.)
Also, indie rock band Yo La Tengo will perform their acclaimed live score of the films of pioneering French underwater documentary film director Jean Painlevé, something they have done for other film festivals all over the world.

Academy Award-winning actress Mira Sorvino is once again trying to break away from her role of Romy in the hit 1997 movie ‘Romy And Michele’s High School Reunion’ by agreeing to star in the new film ‘Union Square’. The movie is being helmed by indie director Nancy Savoca, who rose to fame with her hit HBO movie ‘If These Walls Could Talk.’ Sorvino will star alongside Emmy winner Tammy Blanchard. The two will play two sisters who reluctantly reunite as one prepares to get married, and the other is on the brink of having a nervous breakdown. There’s no word yet when ‘Union Square’ will begin filming, or what kind of [...]...

Is it weird Mira Sorvino won an Oscar and people still think of her as Romy from Romy And Michele.s High School Reunion? I don.t think so, but then again, to me, Paul Newman will always be Reg from Slap Shot. You can.t change how people perceive you. That being said, you can continue to take risky, challenging movies and hope your work will stand for itself. According to Deadline, the former Woody Allen muse has agreed to star in indie director Nancy Savoca.s upcoming Union Square. You may remember Savoca as a force behind the made for HBO movie If These Walls Could Talk that saw Demi Moore play a 1950s woman trying to get an abortion. Union Square will follow two sisters, played by Sorvino and Emmy winner Tammy Blanchard, who reluctantly get together. One is ready to marry and one is ready for...

When ABC Family began airing promos for Pretty Little Liars, we thought it was going to be a silly summer diversion, something to carry us through the dog days until Gossip Girl returned— but boy, were we wrong. Not only did the show pull in monstrous ratings, it received glowing praise from critics (including us!). It was so well-received, in fact, that ABC Family ordered a full season and decided to split it into two cycles.
The driving force behind Pretty Little Liars success is creator/showrunner/executive producer/writer Marlene King, who conceived the original idea to adapt Sara Shepherd's young adult novels into a television series. You might remember Marlene as the writer of Now and Then, If These Walls Could Talk, and Just My Luck. These days, though, you can find her on the Warner Brothers back lot in Burbank, moving between the writers room and the set of Rosewood,...

"Dinner for Schmucks" may have officially been based on the French film "The Dinner Game," but when I first heard about the plot, I immediately thought of "Dogfight." The 1991 drama, directed by Nancy Savoca ("If These Walls Could Talk"), stars River Phoenix in one of his last major roles and Lili Taylor. Like "Dinner for Schmucks," it's about a game in which a group of terrible people compete to see who can find the most contemptible person. And in both films the protagonist ends up feeling bad about the game and starts to like and respect their victim. In…...

Ah, cruel fate! Lindsay Lohan probably wanted to spend her jail time in quiet contemplation. Maybe she’d carve herself a chess set, or take a class to learn how to read good. But her stint in the clink just got more interesting. According to People, Lindsay Lohan’s cell is right next to the cell occupied by Alexis Neiers, a member of the infamous “Bling Ring” that burglarized several celebrity homes…including, allegedly, the home of Lindsay Lohan. (To make things more surreal, Neiers’ cell was once occupied by Paris Hilton. If these walls could talk…they’d probably vom.
