For the last three decades, the multi-hyphenate Lisa Ann Walter, who began her career in stand-up comedy, made her mark as a character actor in films such as Bruce Almighty, Eddie and Shall We Dance? However, for most millennials, Walter is best known for playing Chessy, the beloved nanny in Nancy Meyer’s The Parent Trap. These days, nearly a quarter of a century later, Walter has emerged in the spotlight on ABC’s award-winning mockumentary Abbott Elementary, where she plays the Italian-American spitfire Melissa Schemmenti, a second and third-grade teacher at an underfunded Philadelphia public school. Here, she discusses the joys of playing the elementary school teacher and her own educational upbringing.
Deadline: You’ve returned to doing stand-up recently. How has it been going back on stage versus being behind the camera on Abbott Elementary?
Lisa Ann Walter: I was a stage actress first in musicals and plays.

After the heartbreaking events of 9-1-1 Season 7 Episode 9, there was no telling what the fallout would be for Eddie and Christopher.
Eddie has made a host of mistakes regarding the Kim situation, and it looks like it is time for him to face the consequences of his actions.
In this clip from 9-1-1 Season 7 Episode 10, exclusive to TV Fanatic, Eddie pleads with Buck to help him reach Christopher, as his son has effectively cut him out after witnessing That surreal scene in his home.
Coming home and thinking you’d seen your deceased mother in the flesh embracing your father would be devastating to anyone, and poor Christopher has already endured such loss in his life.
Earlier this season, Christopher had lamented to Buck that he was starting to forget what Shannon’s voice sounded like, and to suddenly be hit with the feeling that she’d come back,...

“Oppenheimer” got a big boost in its bid for Best Editing at the Oscars with a win at the Ace Golden Eddie Awards on March 3. It prevailed in the drama race at these awards bestowed by American Cinema Editors over two of its Oscar rivals –“Anatomy of a Fall” and “Killers of the Flower Moon ” — as well as “Maestro” and “Past Lives.”
Another of the Oscar nominees, “The Holdovers ” won the comedy/musical category over the fifth Oscar contender, “Poor Things,” plus “Air”, “American Fiction” and “Barbie.”
Since 1990, the film that came up with one of the ACEs went on to win the top prize at the Academy Awards 19 times, including the 2023 winner for best comedy/musical editing, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and the 2020 winner for best drama editing, “Parasite.” And in 10 of the 14 years when the Ace barometer was wrong, at least one of the Eddie champs was a contender for Best Picture.

“Oppenheimer” has been way ahead in the Oscars race this season. That lead has widened after the latest two rounds of our 35 boxes theory for making Oscar predicitons.
This test tracks a movie’s popularity across the entire awards season as various guilds and awards groups including the Golden Globes, the Critics Choice Awards, the BAFTAs, SAGs, DGAs, and PGAs. Some boxes represent key nominations and others represent vital wins that an Oscar Best Picture hopeful typically needs to win. The more boxes a film ticks off, the more popular it is across the film industry, and the greater its chances of winning Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
For example, in 2019, “Green Book” won 23 of these 35 boxes before winning Best Picture at the Oscars. Conversely, “Roma” filled in only 19 boxes while both “BlacKkKlansman” and “The Favourite” were at 20. Each of the three previous Best Picture winners prior to “Green Book...

Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong has shared the story of meeting one of his heroes, Eddie Van Halen, revealing that the guitar legend “started crying” during their backstage encounter.
During an appearance on The Howard Stern Show on Wednesday (January 17th), Stern brought up the fact that the first concert Armstrong attended was a Van Halen show. “When I saw Van Halen in ’84, I was 12, and they were my favorite band, and I cried,” began the Green Day singer-guitarist. “It’s like his guitar playing came from a different place. He reinvented how to play guitar. But they also wrote great songs, that’s the main thing that I took away from Van Halen. The songs were just so fucking great.”
When Stern asked if Armstrong ever got to meet Eddie, the punk frontman shared the story of his one and only meeting with the guitar icon. “I [met him] one time,...

At 5’2, Mickey Rooney may have been small in stature, but he had a huge personality and was one of the biggest stars in the heyday of the Golden Era of Hollywood. He had one of the longest careers of any entertainer, with a body of work that spans nine decades in the industry, including vaudeville, films, television, radio and the stage.
Rooney was born Joe Yule, Jr. on September 23, 1920, in Brooklyn, New York. At 17 months old, he made his stage debut in his parent’s vaudeville act, and made his motion picture debut in 1926. The Hollywood Double Strike and the subsequent exodus of studios and stars from San Diego Comic-Con 2023 didn’t cause fans to stay away — huge crowds lined up outside the Convention Center on Thursday morning before the convention floor opened, and once the doors were pulled back, things were as packed as ever.
But for Hall H, normally the site of Comic-Con’s biggest panels (and largest crowd), it was a very different story.
The Room seats 6500 people and in a normal year, it’s at full capacity well before the first panel begins, leaving thousands of fans still waiting in line outside, hoping that enough people leave to make room for them to get in before the day ends.
That was not the case on Thursday.

According to a Comic-Con security staffer, as late as 30 minutes before the panel began the room had maybe 1500 people inside.

Chris Evans saved the world (and even the universe) multiple times as Captain America. But in his latest Apple TV+ action film “Ghosted,” it’s Ana de Armas who’s doing the rescuing.
“It was great. I mean, we’ve all seen Ana be badass; she was so good in [‘No Time to Die’],” Evans told Variety at the New York premiere of “Ghosted” on Tuesday night. “It was nice to be the damsel in distress. It was nice to need saving — primarily because I didn’t have to sweat during the action sequences.”
Directed by Dexter Fletcher, “Ghosted” follows hopelessly romantic Cole (Evans), who falls head over heels for the enigmatic Sadie (de Armas).
When Sadie seemingly ghosts him, Cole follows her to London as a romantic gesture, only to discover that the girl of his dreams is a CIA agent on assignment.

Three months after Julia Misley filed a lawsuit against Steven Tyler in a Los Angeles court, the Aerosmith singer has denied all allegations of sexually assaulting her as a minor.
According to Rolling Stone, Tyler’s response was filed last week in Los Angeles County Superior Court and outlined a lengthy set of defense claims requesting the lawsuit be dismissed. Specifically, Tyler insists that the plaintiff consented to their sexual relationship and that Tyler had immunity as her legal guardian at the time the allegations occurred.Misley, who was known as Julia Holcomb at the time of the alleged assault, accused Tyler of sexual assault and battery in the 1970s when she was still a minor. Misley’s suit claims that Tyler convinced her mother to grant him legal guardianship over her when she was 16 and that they were involved in a sexual relationship for about three years. Tyler James Williams Says ‘Everybody Hates Chris’ Producer Told Him He’d ‘Probably Never Work Again’
Tyler James Williams, who landed the lead role in “Everybody Hates Chris” at age 12 in 2005, revealed in a new interview that a producer on the series told him he’d “probably never work again” after the series, which was based on Chris Rock’s teen years.
Williams, who won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Emmy for playing Gregory Eddie on ABC hit “Abbott Elementary,” told GQ that an unnamed producer once said to him, “I’ll never see you as anything else and you’ll probably never work again.”
The now 30-year-old actor recalled, “I was like, ‘Holy s—t you really just looked at me and said that.'” Although he thinks the producer probably meant it as a joke, the comment still stung.

Ace Eddies: ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ ‘Everything Everywhere’ win over Oscar rivals for Best Film Editing
“Top Gun: Maverick” got a big boost in its bid for Best Editing at the Oscars with a win at the Ace Golden Eddie Awards on March 5. It prevailed in the drama race at these awards bestowed by American Cinema Editors over two of its Oscar rivals –“Elvis” and “Tár ” — as well as “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “The Woman King.”
Another of the Oscar nominees, “Everything Everywhere All at Once ” won the comedy/musical category over the fifth Oscar contender, “The Banshees of Inisherin,” plus “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”, “The Menu” and “Triangle of Sadness.”
Since 1990, the film that came up with one of the ACEs went on to win the top prize at the Academy Awards 18 times, including the 2020 winner for best drama editing, “Parasite.” And in 10 of the 14 years when the Ace barometer was wrong, at least one of the Eddie champs was a contender for Best Picture.

The Oscars are now just a week away and Sunday provided three guild award ceremonies to provide hints at who may take away Hollywood’s most prestigious prizes. The Daniels’ “Everything Everywhere All At Once” continued its winning streak at the Ace Eddie Awards for editing and the WGA Award for screenplay, but they didn’t complete the trifecta at the ASC Awards. That’s because they never made the cut with the American Society of Cinematographers in the first place (and Larkin Seiple didn’t earn an Oscar nomination either).

From the very start, Blue Bloods has unabashedly been a New York cop show. After all, nearly the entire cast of characters work in law enforcement. But the show also puts a spotlight on New York City itself, with the Reagan family mostly residing across the city. However, fans have been wondering exactly where in New York Jamie (Will Estes) and Eddie (Vanessa Ray) now live?

The primary setting for so many of the character moments and interactions in Blue Bloods is the Brooklyn home of patriarch Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck). The interior scenes — including the show’s iconic family dinners — are shot on a set. The success of any horror-comedy can be measured by the number of laughs and screams it elicits. If it coaxes them simultaneously, so much the better.
By that measure, “Cocaine Bear” is a bloody marvel, an extrapolation of a one-line “weird news” story — bear dies by stuffing itself with cocaine tossed from a smuggler’s plane — into a brilliant comedy of errors and terrors.
Cocaine itself has, of course, been responsible for the creation of countless terrible screenplays, but as an inciting incident, mixed with the jaws-and-claws of a fearsome black bear, it provides a distinguished ensemble the opportunity to be (depending on the character) brave, cowardly, heroic, venal, crafty, panicky or, ultimately, dinner.

Rihanna returned to the live stage for a performance at the 2023 Super Bowl Halftime Show, and boy, was it worth the wait.
The Barbados-born pop singer didn’t hold back one bit during her career-spanning set, playing some of her biggest hits — “Umbrella,” “We Found Love,” and “Diamonds” — alongside standout features on “All of the Lights” and “Run This Town.” Making the breathtaking performance even more impressive is the fact she did so while pregnant. A baby bump was visible throughout her performance, and afterwards a representative for the singer confirmed that she is indeed expecting her second child.
Clad in a red jumpsuit, Rihanna showed no fear as she was lowered down to the stage on a floating platform to open the performance. Choreographed dancers surrounded Rihanna when she touched down, and though the superstar obviously wasn’t able to move as freely as she would otherwise, she still held her own.

Will Smith was supposed to appear in the star-studded Grammys performance that celebrated the 50th anniversary of hip hop.
The actor, who was one of the biggest rappers in the ’90s a.k.a the Fresh Prince, was forced to step away from the gig last minute due to a scheduling conflict.
“I’ll give the spoiler alert away. Will Smith was apart of the festivities tonight, but they started shooting ‘Bad Boys 4’ this week,” Questlove, who coordinated the tribute, told Variety on Sunday night during a red carpet interview. “There were a lot of preliminary shots that he had to do, so we had to lose Will.”

The award-winning musician and record producer added that attempting to get Smith for the 14-minute-long performance was “a shot in the dark” because he is “always shooting movies.

The nominations for the 2023 Ace Eddie Awards announced on Wednesday (Feb. 1) include our Oscar frontrunner for Best Film Editing, “Top Gun: Maverick,” along with the other four films contending in that race: “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Elvis,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Tar.”
The Ace Eddie Awards divide their prizes for editing between dramas and comedies/musicals.
“Elvis,” “Tar” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” contend here in the drama race, which is rounded out by “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “The Woman King.”
Facing off against “The Banshees of Inisherin” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” on the comedy side are “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” “The Menu” and “Triangle of Sadness.”
In 1992, the Eddies went from three to five nominees (matching that of the Oscars) and in 2000 it split the award in two, with five nominees for each of drama and comedy/musical. Over the past 30 years,...

The title “The Accidental Getaway Driver” says it all: A down-on-his-luck driver picks up felons in his vehicle and unwittingly gets mixed up in their criminal acts. This “Collateral”-esque proposition propels renowned music video director Sing J. Lee’s minor-key and frustratingly one-note crime-drama, inspired by the true story of a Southern California driver of Vietnamese descent held hostage by three Orange County prison runaways — an incident told in a 2017 GQ article by Paul Kix.
The premise immediately screams “cinematic thriller,” and Lee’s polished, neo-noir-adjacent nighttime sequences (captured stylishly by Dp Michael Cambio Fernandez with lush neon colors and deep contrasting blacks) does right by the idea in the visual department. Unfortunately, the script — co-written by Lee and Christopher Chen — leaves a lot to be desired, squandering the old-school appeal of the true-crime drama for a dull and overlong mood piece in which nothing much happens and no...

Let's face it: For the most part, basketball movies are bad. It's such a beautiful game, filled with such balletic human athleticism, that it seems like a natural fit for cinema. And yet, there are only a handful of great basketball films, and only one real masterpiece.
The reason for the relatively low quality, even compared to football films, seems to be that most serious directors aren't big fans of the game. Spike Lee is the only notable exception. Basketball is otherwise largely a backdrop for mediocre comedies, like Billy Crystal's "Forget Paris," or Whoopi Goldberg's even more forgettable "Eddie." Even Will Ferrell couldn't make the game all that amusing in his ode to the funky pre-nba-merger era, "Semi-Pro."

Warner Bros. sports drama King Richard took the top Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) honor Saturday to cap the American Cinema Editors’ 72nd annual Ace Eddie Awards.
Pamela Martin edited the pic, which sees Will Smith portraying the father to tennis sensations Venus (Saniyya Sidney) and Serena Williams (Demi Singleton), who had a plan that would take the young tennis players from the streets of Compton to the global stage. The win puts Martin and the film in frontrunner status in the Best Film Editing Oscar race, where it is competing against fellow nominees Don’t Look Up, Dune, The Power of the Dog and Tick, Tick…Boom!. Twenty-two of the past 30 Ace winners for best edited dramatic film and 11 of the past 16 have gone on to score the Oscar, but Ford v. The American Cinema Editors guild, which hands out its awards on March 5, has a good track record as a preview of the Oscar winner for Best Picture (18 out of the last 31) and a great one for forecasting who will win the Film Editing Oscar (22 of the last 31). Not surprisingly, it is also fairly prescient when it comes to predicting the five Film Editing Oscar slots.
All of this year’s nominees for that Oscar also contend for this cutting prize. The Ace Eddie Awards are divided between dramas and comedies/musicals. The Academy is staying away from both Super Bowl Lvi on February 13 as well as the Winter Olympics in Beijing (February 4 through February 20), while leaving plenty of time for Oscar-show planning after the nominations announcement on February 8. And as theaters reopen, with many movies postponed from last year, including rival New York musicals from Jon M. Chu (“In the Heights”) and Steven Spielberg (“West Side Story”), the Academy is staying flexible about eligibility requirements.

The nominations for the 2022 Ace Eddie Awards announced on Thursday (Jan. 27) include our Oscar frontrunner for Best Film Editing, “Dune,” along with three of the other four films we’re predicting to reap bids in that race: “Belfast,” “Don’t Look Up” and “The Power of the Dog.” While “West Side Story” was snubbed by the American Cinema Editors we expect it to be the fifth Academy Awards contender.
The Ace Eddie Awards divide their prizes for editing between dramas and comedies/musicals.
“Belfast,” “Dune” and “The Power of the Dog” contend here in the drama race, which is rounded out by “King Richard” and“No Time to Die.”
Facing off against “Don’t Look Up” on the comedy side are “Cruella,” “The French Dispatch,” “Licorice Pizza” and “tick, tick…Boom!”
In 1992, the Eddies went from three to five nominees (matching that of the Oscars) and in 2000 it split the award in two,...

“Belfast,” “Dune,” “King Richard,” “No Time to Die” and “The Power of the Dog” have been nominated as the best dramatic film editing of 2021 by the American Cinema Editors, which announced the nominees for the 72nd annual Ace Eddie Awards on Thursday.
Those five films will compete in the Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) category, while the field in Best Edited Feature Film (Comedy) will consist of “Cruella,” “Don’t Look Up,” “The French Dispatch,” “Licorice Pizza” and “tick, tick…Boom!”
The most surprising omission was probably “West Side Story,” while Ace Eddie voters also bypassed “Nightmare Alley,” “Coda” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”
Nominations for the editing of animated features went to the same five animated films that have also been nominated by the Cinema Audio Society, Motion Picture Sound Editors, Visual Effects Society and Art Directors Guild: “Encanto,” “Luca,” “The Mitchells vs. the Machines,” “Raya and the Last Dragon” and “Sing 2.

Some new chapters will begin for some of the gang when the series returns.
However, as evident by A Million Little Things Season 4 Episode 8, there are always some open-ended chapters that were incomplete, and they're rearing their heads, too.
It was mostly an understated midseason finale for this series, but the hour had notable heartfelt moments.
It's starting to wear on the series that they've opted to limit large group interactions among the cast and characters. When you have a series that always relied on the majority interacting at once, it becomes more noticeable whenever they stray from that.
It was an installment where you were more aware than usual that many of the storylines are insular. Most of them don't overlap and connect anymore. And, of course, they'll rotate featuring characters in installments, so when a midseason finale happens, it's more apparent than ever when the entirety of the cast isn't prominent in it.

Finally, we know what happened on the night of Peter's attack, and it's not good.
Gary has made a mess for himself on A Million Little Things Season 4 Episode 2, and he'll blow everything apart trying to crawl out of it, assuming he can.
In the interim, Eddie and Katherine have both found some new friends that are good for them.
Is there any way Gary can get out of this? While he didn't do the worst deeds on the night of Peter's attack, things aren't looking good for him right now.
He's the only one that Detective Saunders is even looking at, and the man is keen to get to the bottom of what happened to Peter.
In many ways, it's frustrating that this detective appears to show more interest in what happened to a suspected sexual offender than his victims.
Saunders didn't show this much dedication or interest when he looked into Sophie's case.
