Rosie O’Donnell Wrote a New Stand-Up Special Purely to Spite Ellen DeGeneres
Image
While her Koosh ball-firing days may be behind her, Rosie O’Donnell seems to be quite busy lately. In addition to joining the cast of the Sex and the City spin-off And Just Like That…, she has reportedly written a new hour of stand-up material for a forthcoming comedy special. Why? To make Ellen DeGeneres look even worse than she already does.

According to In Touch Weekly, the same journalistic outlet that just cracked the case of Jessica Simpson’s weight loss, O’Donnell is “secretly finalizing a deal” for a new comedy special and is “vowing to outshine her longtime rival” Ellen DeGeneres. The outlet spoke with an anonymous insider who claims that O'Donnell's new hour will be “a lot like Ellen’s special, except it’s funny!”

They went on to say that “Rosie still has a swagger and still has real comedy chops, and thankfully, in her new material...

How Rosie O' Donnell Became A Big Sister Figure To The Menedez Brothers
Image
Rosie O'Donnell has been a longtime advocate for Lyle and Erik Menendez, who shot their parents dead in 1989. Long before the "TikTok Movement," Rosie was already a "big sister" to the incarcerated brothers after they had bonded over the similar abuse that they'd suffered at home.

Now, Lyle and Erik's murder case is up for review for possible resentencing following Ryan Murphy's Netflix drama series, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. Kim Kardashian has also penned an essay urging authorities to reconsider their life sentences after visiting them in prison alongside Cooper Koch, the actor who played Erik in the hit show.

There are even rumors about them getting offers to do reality TV if they ever get out. The Menendez brothers have been locked up for almost 35 years. During those years, they also got acquainted with O.J. Simpson amid his infamous murder trial. Here's why Rosie has...

Robert Smigel Reveals The Lost Chris Farley Sketch That Called Out ‘SNL’ And Lorne Michaels for All the Fat Jokes
Image
Despite his assigned role as the resident fat guy on Saturday Night Live, Chris Farley was a lot more than just a walking, talking, cartwheeling visual gag.

In the decades since Farley died of a drug overdose on December 18, 1997, the comedy legend’s contemporaries have had plenty of time to examine Farley’s oeuvre and come to their own conclusions about what his immaculate work on SNL meant for him as an artist and as a person. During Farley’s heyday in the 1990s, the greater comedy community still had a callous sense of humor when it came to performers of Farley’s size, and SNL cast members and writers from Farley’s era have since fiercely criticized the show for placing Farley in a compulsory position as the literal butt of the joke in sketches such as the enduringly popular but currently controversial “Chippendales Audition.”

Specifically, Bob Odenkirk has...

‘Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution’ Review: Trailblazing Queer Comics Get Their Due in Entertaining Netflix Doc
Image
In the opening section of Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution, you might be forgiven for thinking this is an extended Pride Month promo to breathe new life into Netflix’s 2022 special, Stand Out: An LGBTQ+ Celebration. But in a Q&a following the rousingly received opening-night screening at the Provincetown Film Festival, director Page Hurwitz clarified the chicken-and-the-egg situation, explaining that she produced the event at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, which assembled 22 prominent queer comics on the same bill, as a foundational building block for this documentary surveying the rich history of LGBTQ+ comedians.

At a time when a new generation of queer comics from across the sexual and gender identity spectrum has emerged into what appears to be a thriving scene, this is an invaluable primer on the many performers who kicked down resistant doors to make today’s greater representation possible.

Even if it only served as...

Could Danny Masterson's Arrest Derail That '90s Show?
Image
Those following entertainment news in recent weeks will likely have heard about the Danny Masterson case. In September 2023, the former That '70s Show star was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison on assault charges. Investigations into Masterson first began in 2017, leading to the effective end of his career. He was formally charged with three counts of assault in 2020, with the trial beginning in late 2022. After the jury deadlocked, a new trial began in April 2023, with Masterson convicted on two counts in May.

Masterson's actions have shed new light on other problematic actions by his '70s Show costars. With all this negative publicity, it doesn't seem like an ideal time to reboot the series. But that's exactly what Netflix did with That '90s Show. The show's first season dropped in January, and a second is set to go into production when the WGA and SAG strikes conclude. But is this really the best idea?...

Danny Masterson Accuser Calls Out Ashton Kutcher & Mila Kunis: 'Just as Sick'
Image
Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis haven't been able to catch a break ever since their letters in support of their former That '70s Show co-star Danny Masterson went viral, and now Chrissie Carnell Bixler, one of the accusers, is bashing them as well.

Despite all the character letters his friends and family sent to Judge Olmedo, Masterson, best known for his role as Hyde in That '70s Show, has been sentenced to 30 years to life in prison for raping two women in 2003. Even though over 50 people have shown support to Masterson in the letter form, Kutcher and Kunis currently seem to be the main targets of online backlash. Following their apology, Bixler called out the two actors on her Instagram Stories and shared a few cryptic details about the stars' involvement in decades-old incidents (via X).

Mila Kunis Once Said Danny Masterson Bet Ashton Kutcher $10 to French Kiss Her on ‘That ’70s Show’ Set: ‘I Was a 14-Year-Old Little Girl’
Image
Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis’ 2002 interview on “The Rosie O’Donnell Show” resurfaced on social media after the two actors apologized for writing letters of support for Danny Masterson ahead of his sentencing for rape. In the viral clip, Kunis reveals that Masterson once bet Kutcher $10 to French kiss her while filming an episode of their Fox sitcom “That ’70s Show.” The actors are in good spirits about the incident, but the clip has amassed over four million views and counting in the days after Masterson was sentenced to 30 years to life for rape.

“She was 14 when we started the show. I was 19,” Kutcher says in the 2002 interview. “And they were like, ‘You guys are going to be making out in this scene.’ And I’m thinking, ‘Wait, this is slightly illegal.'”

“I’ve never kissed a guy,” Kunis adds. “I was a 14-year-old little girl and I was extremely scared for my life.

Danny Masterson Victim Shares Clip of Ashton Kutcher Talking About Kissing 14-Year-Old Mila Kunis (Video)
Chrissie Bixler outed herself as one of Danny Masterson’s victims in November 2017. She joined actress Bobette Riales and two anonymous women in filing a lawsuit against Masterson and the Church of Scientology in 2019, and on Saturday posted a series of interviews with Ashton Kutcher in which he revealed Masterson bet him $10 to French kiss a then-14-year-old Mila Kunis when Kutcher was 19.

By the time the first episode of “That ’70s Show” aired, putting together Kutcher and Kunis as then-fictional love interests, Kutcher was 20.

One of the clips is from a 2002 episode of “The Rosie O’Donnell Show,” where Kutcher and Kunis appeared together. Kutcher admitted to O’Donnell that he and Kunis were told they would be kissing a lot, and he wondered if “this is slightly illegal” due to Kunis’ age.

The actress then revealed that Masterson bet Kutcher $10 if he French kissed her when the pair had their...

The Season 2 premiere of “And Just Like That” opens with a montage with the three main characters — Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) — engaged in intimate acts with their respective lovers. And while the latter two appear in states of complete undress, Carrie does not.

Parker has talked openly about her “no nudity” stance in her career which dates back to her breakout role on “And Just Like That” predecessor “Sex and the City.” Davis, Nixon and Kim Cattrall all appeared nude on the show — which ran from the late ’90s to early ’00s on HBO — but Parker never did.

Rosie O’Donnell Admits She Hasn’t Trusted Ellen DeGeneres Since She ‘Really Hurt’ Her Feelings With ‘Mean’ Comment
Image
Rosie O’Donnell still isn’t in a great place with Ellen DeGeneres after the latter denied being friends with her.

O’Donnell told The Hollywood Reporter how the pair were among the young entertainers in Hollywood going to parties together all those years ago, so it was weird when DeGeneres said they weren’t pally.

The comedian shared of what the dynamic was like between her and DeGeneres as “two rising comics in the scene,” “It was a good relationship. We were friends. We supported each other. Which is why when she came on my show, I said, ‘Let me not have you standing there by yourself. Let’s get a joke in there.’ And we sat down and came up with that, ‘Oh my God, I love Casey Kasem. Maybe I’m Lebanese.’ It became a big thing.”

What Happened To Mara Wilson After Matilda
Image
Mara Wilson disappeared from the public eye not long after 1996's Matilda. Wilson is one of the most memorable child actors from the 1990s, thanks in large part to roles in Mrs. Doubtfire and the 1994 Miracle On 34th Street remake. But of course, the role that stands out the most in Wilson's acting career is that of the titular character in Matilda.

As a child, Wilson was working with industry legends like Martin Short, Danny DeVito, and Robin Williams. She won a Young Artist Award in 1996 for her role in 1996's Matilda movie and another a year later for A Simple Wish. The star also appeared at the 1995 Academy Awards on the red carpet and as a presenter with Tim Curry. During a 1997 interview on The Rosie O'Donnell Show, the host praised Wilson for having so many acting roles under her belt at only 10 years old. But while this was...

Kevin Fortson, the Executive Vice President of Production & Administration for Warner Bros. Unscripted Television, will retire this summer after three decades with the studio.

“For the past 30 years, Kevin has been an indelible part of Warner Bros,” said Mike Darnell, President, Warner Bros. Unscripted Television. “His name has literally become synonymous with the company and the lot itself. Personally, I will miss him for his counsel, his friendship and his endless string of dad jokes. He truly is one in a million … although he would probably try to cut that budget down! He is as important to the studio as any movie or television show ever produced here, and if I had the power to do it, there would be a stage with his name on it, right next to Friends and The Big Bang Theory. He is known as the unofficial Mayor of the lot, and his constituents will miss him dearly…...

Rosie O’Donnell Reveals Why She Never Appeared on ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ (Video)
Rosie O'Donnell
It’s hard to believe that over the 19 years The Ellen DeGeneres Show was on the air, Rosie O’Donnell was never a guest. (Jennifer Aniston was on 20 times! Justin Bieber a whopping 27!) So why was it that the comedian-actress never made her way to Ellen’s couch? The two have a lot in common as veterans of daytime television, with O’Donnell hosting The Rosie O’Donnell Show from 1996-2002, and as fellow openly gay comedians. So it’s a bit odd to consider O’Donnell never joining DeGeneres as a guest, and we found out exactly why when O’Donnell was a guest on Watch What Happens Live! with Andy Cohen this week. When Cohen read a fan-submitted question asking why O’Donnell never appeared on Ellen show, the American Gigolo star revealed that, years ago, DeGeneres hurt her feelings. “We had a little bit of a weird thing, and...

Rosie O’Donnell says Ellen DeGeneres once ‘hurt her feelings’: ‘I never really got over it’
Rosie O'Donnell
Rosie O’Donnell has explained why she was never really friends with Ellen DeGeneres after the presenter “hurt her feelings”.

DeGeneres famously appeared on The Rosie O’Donnell Show in 1996, where she alluded to rumours that she was a lesbian before publicly coming out on Ellen.

Appearing on Watch What Happens Live on Thursday (15 September), host Andy Cohen asked O’Donnell why she was never asked to appear on The Ellen DeGeneres Show herself.

“We had a little bit of a weird thing, after my show went off the air and hers was coming on the air,” O’Donnell explained.

“Larry King was on with Ellen and he said, ‘What ever happened to Rosie O’Donnell? Her show went down the tubes! She came out as a lesbian and disappeared!’”

She continued: “And Ellen said, and I’m quoting, ‘I don’t know Rosie. We’re not friends.’”

O’Donnell said that...

Rosie O'Donnell Says She Was "Hurt" By Ellen DeGeneres' Past Comments About Her
Rosie O'Donnell
Rosie O'Donnell is clearing the air about her strained relationship with Ellen DeGeneres. During the Sept. 15 episode of Watch What Happens Live, the American Gigolo actress—who hosted The Rosie O'Donnell Show from 1996 to 2002 and later fronted The Rosie Show before it got canceled in 2012 after one season due to low ratings—discussed why she never appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres Show and why she and Ellen are not close friends today. "After my show went off the air, and hers was coming on the air, Larry King was on with Ellen and he said, 'Whatever happened to Rosie O'Donnell? Her show went down the tubes. Rosie O’Donnell revealed why she’d never been on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” in its 20-year run as she chatted to Andy Cohen on Thursday’s “Watch What Happens Live”.

Rosie O’Donnell opened up about her feelings over the recently deceased Anne Heche, with whom she seemingly had a misunderstanding.

Can Kelly Clarkson Save Daytime? The Host on Taking Over Ellen’s Spot, Touring Again and Broadway Dreams
Image
“I’m so sweaty. I’m gonna roll these Spanx off,” Kelly Clarkson exclaims in front of a live audience at Lincoln Center, having just belted out Mary J. Blige’s “Just Fine” — a song she learned only hours before. The crowd cheers her on and laughs as she announces, mid-performance, “I have to pee, so I’m gonna have an extra pep in my step.”

This is not a concert.

On this rainy, humid morning in August, Clarkson is on set for Season 4 of “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” which has relocated to New York City from L.A. for a week to pre-tape shows for its fall premiere. And things need to be more than ”just fine,” as this is not your ordinary season launch: The daytime star has been thrust into the lucrative 4 p.m. time slot, where Ellen DeGeneres built her empire. Now, NBC-owned stations and...

‘I Get Knocked Down’ Review: Singer Thumps a Tub for Life After Chumbawamba’s Lone Hit
Image
It’s one thing to grapple with having been a one-hit wonder, and another when that singular smash may have given the world a wrong impression of what you were all about … or just represented a moment in which selling out was quickly succeeded by flaming out. These are some of the matters troubling former Chumbawamba frontman Dunstan Bruce’s mind in “I Get Knocked Down,” wherein the singer takes part as narrator, co-director, primary subject and putative conscience of a swept-aside alt-rock generation. His intention with the film is to beat himself up a little and find some redemption, proceeding from the assumption that having been responsible for 1997’s globally massive “Tubthumping” is not its own eternal reward.

“I Get Knocked Down” — named for a line in the chorus of “Tubthumping,” which will be instantly familiar to just about anyone sentient in the late ’90s — quickly emerges out of...

Arthur Forrest, Director on ‘Whose Line Is It Anyway?’ and ‘The Dick Cavett Show,’ Dies at 95
Image
Arthur Forrest, a television legend with a 75-year career that covered long-running hits such as “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” and “That’s Incredible!,” died on Oct. 25. He was 95.

Marcy Forrest, Arthur’s wife, confirmed the death to Variety.

Born in 1926 in Brooklyn and raised in the Bronx as a first-generation American, Forrest completed his education at NYU and landed a job at DuMont Network’s studio as a janitor. After learning the business, Forrest went from janitor to page, from page to studio assistant, all the way up to the cameraman on “The Honeymooners” and “Captain Video.”

After leaving DuMont and working for New York’s Channel 5, Forrest directed the popular children’s show, “Wonderama,” and stayed at the station until 1973, when he left to direct the late night “Dick Cavett Show.”

Moving to Los Angeles in 1975, Forrest established himself in the world of live television, finding success with...

Original ‘Blue’s Clues’ Host Steve Burns Finally Addresses His Sudden Departure in Viral Twitter Clip
Image
Original “Blue’s Clues” host Steve Burns has finally clued the world into why he left the popular children’s show in 2002. In a viral clip posted to Nick Jr.’s Twitter account, Burns explained that he decided to go to college.

Big news, I’m leaving. Here’s my brother Joe, he’s your new best friend,’ and then I got on a bus and I left and we didn’t see each other for like a really long time? Can we just talk about that? Rosie O’Donnell Addresses Her Infamous Spoiling of ‘Fight Club’: ‘I Had No Idea I Had Even Done It’
Image
Having gone 10 rounds and then some against Donald Trump, Rosie O’Donnell isn’t afraid of Brad Pitt and Edward Norton. The former daytime talk show host notoriously spoiled the ending of “Fight Club” during an episode of “The Rosie O’Donnell Show” back in 1999, when the David Fincher film was newly released in theaters. Though the Tyler Durden twist is now infamous, once upon a time a person could walk into a movie theater and be completely surprised by the ending.

During an interview with “The Jess Cagle Show” on Sirius Xm radio, O’Donnell finally addressed the snafu, though she stopped short of an actual apology.

“I was just talking because I didn’t think [‘Fight Club’] was good and the ‘Sixth Sense’ was out. I don’t know. It annoyed me, the movie,” she said. “So I was saying — ‘the ‘Sixth Sense’ makes sense, but this one doesn’t...

Will Kelly Clarkson be the next great talk show dynasty at the Daytime Emmys?
Image
Kelly Clarkson won Best Entertainment Talk Show Host at the 2020 Daytime Emmys for “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” and this year the series took off with eight bids in the first round of nominations, which were announced on May 25. Not only is she likely to win for hosting again according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users so far, she’s favored to take Best Entertainment Talk Show as well. With “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” ending its run in 2022, is this the start of a new talk show dynasty in daytime?

Over the years the Daytime Emmys have usually been dominated by one talk show personality or another. “Donahue” won six times in nine years between 1978 and 1986. Then “The Oprah Winfrey Show” came along and prevailed nine times between 1987 and 1997, losing only twice during that period. “Oprah” remained on the air for more than a decade after that but Winfrey...

Warner Bros. Communications Executive Scott Rowe to Exit After 27 Years
Image
Scott Rowe, a longtime communications executive for Warner Bros. TV Group, is exiting the studio after nearly 30 years.

Rowe’s post as senior VP of communications and domestic market has been eliminated as part of the broader restructuring and downsizing that has transformed the storied studio and its WarnerMedia parent company. The depth of the changes at Warner Bros., once Hollywood’s undisputed leader in film and TV production, have been jarring to entertainment industry veterans.

Rowe joined Warner Bros. in early 1994 after seven years with Fox, starting out as manager of publicity for the Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution syndication unit. He steadily rose through the ranks and added marketing duties in addition to PR and communications on behalf of various Wbtv units. He worked closely with longtime Wbtv marketing chief Lisa Gregorian, whose departure amid the restructuring was confirmed Monday.

Among the many Wbtv shows that Rowe worked...

Andrew Cuomo’s Daily Press Conferences Became Must-See Daytime TV (Opinion)
Image
In a year when all of entertainment was turned upside down, nobody saw it coming: The hottest property in daytime TV as America went on lockdown was a 62-year-old career politician holding court in Albany, N.Y.

On March 2, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo conducted a media briefing in an effort to spread vital news and information about the coronavirus outbreak that was just starting to be recognized as a massive public health threat. With fear across the country spiking, Cuomo’s briefing was carried live by New York’s local TV stations — and nationally on CNN and other news outlets.

That 12-minute introduction, part of a 34-minute session with other state leaders, was the first of 111 consecutive daily briefings for New Yorkers and the wider world about the grim progress of the worst pandemic to hit the U.S. in a century. Cuomo became the most unlikely TV star...

Image
The Actors Fund has distributed a record-breaking $10.5 million over the past eight weeks to provide emergency financial assistance for performing arts and entertainment workers in need due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the Fund reported today. The figure reflects more than five times the amount typically distributed by the Fund in an entire year.

Brian Stokes Mitchell, actor and Chairman of the Board of The Actors Fund, said, “Looking at a number – even one as large as 10 million – doesn’t begin to tell the whole story. In an instant, our friends and supporters, people like Rosie O’Donnell, Seth Rudetsky & James Wesley and others, began dreaming of entirely new fundraising models that would prove to be nothing short of lifesaving. In all my years working with The Fund, I’ve never been so moved, so inspired, or so grateful.”

Which ‘I Know This Much is True’ actress will the Emmys nominate?
Mark Ruffalo in I Know This Much Is True (2020)
The trailers for upcoming HBO miniseries “I Know This Much is True” advertise, “Academy Award nominee Mark Ruffalo, Academy Award winner Melissa Leo, Emmy winner Rosie O’Donnell, Emmy winner Archie Panjabi, with Academy Award nominee Juliette Lewis and Emmy winner Kathryn Hahn.” With such a deep bench and Ruffalo the Best Movie/Limited Actor front-runner for his dual role as twins Dominick and Thomas Birdsey, “I Know This Much is True” is a formidable contender for a Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actress nomination, but for which star?

SEEour rundown on the “Mrs. America” supporting actresses.

Honorable mention: Juliette Lewis as Nedra Frank

Nedra is a scholar whom Dominic hires to translate an Italian manuscript for an autobiography by his late grandfather. Anyone who tunes into the premiere might want to nominate Lewis, who is unhinged and unpredictable in an uncomfortable nine-minute scene when she shows up unexpectedly at Dominic’s door one night.

Bww Review: Rosie O'Donnell Helps the Show Go On for One Night Only
Rosie O'Donnell in The Rosie O'Donnell Show (1996)
When all this is over, one of the enduring cultural moments of the coronavirus pandemic will be the memories of the music. Across the world, people have been turning to music for comfort and community. Clips have gone viral of Italians holding nightly singalongs from their balconies and Spaniards jamming out together from a distance. And here in America, the performing arts community has been coming together to produce all sorts of remote content. The most high-profile of these to date is the one-off 'revival' of The Rosie O'Donnell Show, which streamed live on Sunday, Mar. 22. It was a testament to the power of community and the humor of technical problems.

Rosie O’Donnell Talks About Relaunching Her Talk Show Full Time After Coronavirus Benefit (Exclusive)
Rosie O'Donnell
We haven’t seen the last of Rosie O’Donnell — as a talk show host, that is.

The funny lady tells Variety that the one-night-only return of “The Rosie O’Donnell Show” on Sunday may have just been the beginning of her talk show comeback.

The stand-alone show, broadcast on Broadway.com and the website’s YouTube channel, raised $600,000 for The Actors Fund. Produced by “Madam Secretary” star Erich Bergen, the event featured dozes of guests including Patti LuPone, Ben Platt, Kristin Chenoweth, Billy Porter, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Chita Rivera, Darren Criss and many more.

Variety caught up with O’Donnell on Monday afternoon to talk about her return, why she wasn’t bothered by the show’s audio problems and the possibility of more fundraising shows with guests like Barbra Streisand.

Congrats on a great show. You raised more than $600,000.

It was so fun. We raised so much money. I’m so glad it all worked out.

Alan Menken at an event for Tangled (2010)
