So and so film. But not a lot of action..

When the bullet hits the bone.. Hmm? Well, this film is not as exciting as I expected it to be..

Basically, it tells the story of a doctor (Jeff Wincott) who witnesses a harassment involving a man and a woman..

Somehow he interferes and tries to help the woman (Michelle Johnson) out of it, but then gets shot..

Whilst recovering he realizes that the man who shot him is working for a drug dealer Nicholas Turner.

Determined to help the woman Lisa, he goes and grabs a briefcase which has names of all the people involved in the drug syndicate. Soon the doctor decides to settle the score against Turner once and for all..

In all, this film is watchable but I'm afraid there's not a lot of action to this one. I know Jeff Wincott is one of those martial arts kind of hero. I thought he would show off more kicks and that but in this one, he's just trying to prove his acting ability is more than up to scratch..

If you want to see this film, by all means do so, especially on a rainy day..

    Questions & Answers

In the early 90's, the action genre really blew up and nowhere could this be felt more than dtv. A lot of low level stars emerged including Canadian actor Jeff Wincott. After five seasons of appearing on the well received tv cop show 'Night Heat', he'd start doing karate or shoot 'em up flicks of the low budget variety. 'When The Bullet Hits The Bone' is one of the latter.

Jack Davies (Wincott) is an emergency room doctor who's grown tired of seeing all the drug related deaths, suffering, all the lives he couldn't save. Helping Lisa (Michelle Johnson) being accosted in an alley gets him two bullets, a trip to the hospital and bad people on his trail who want to make sure he's silenced permanently so he can't mess up their business with crooked politicians.

The first three minutes effectively make you feel for the doctor and the uphill nature of the job. Good atmosphere that gives away to a cliche corruption storyline. The doc inserts himself to stop the flow of drugs. The action is alright at times, but the editing needs work and the end shootout is poor. Wincott comes off fine throughout and dials it up during scenes of being tortured. Douglas O'Keefe is sufficient as the head bad guy, but Roy Lewis as his right hand with a habit of asking victims trivia questions before he shoots them is a step up.

'When The Bullet Hits The Bone' has a great title and a good moment or two, but nothing that elevates it from standing out in a sea of dtv titles of it's type that were coming out in droves during the 90's. Takes place in New York, but filmed in Toronto and has a ending that can't be taken seriously. As a whole it feels weak.

When rescuing Lisa, Jeff made two mistakes that were too dumb for his character. He left the fourth guy behind in the room with the guns when he went to her. Then he left the thugs with all their guns to come after them when he could have tossed or taken them.

Daemon: The 13th president of the United States. Who was that?

      Dr. Jack Davies: Grant!

      Daemon: [shoots him] Wrong.

    • Alternate versions
The German DVD version, which is titled Bullet in the Dark, is heavily cut and is only 76 minutes. The versions available in USA are 82 minutes. The longest version of the film is the VHS release in Netherlands which runs 88 minutes. As running times on PAL videos are shorter than on NTSC videos, it means that the US version is cut.
