Director David Leland Dies, Aged 82
Image
David Leland, a director of stage and screen whose filmmaking CV includes films such as Wish You Were Here, Personal Services and Land Girls, has died. He was 82.

Born in 1941 in Cambridge, Leland initially trained as an actor at the Central Speech of School and Drama and had many stage credits before moving into direction at the Crucible Theatre. That began his collaboration with Alan Clarke in 1981. He wrote Made In Britain, which Clarke directed and featured the first screen role of Tim Roth. In 1986, Leland and director Neil Jordan co-wrote the screenplay for Mona Lisa, which starred Bob Hoskins.

Leland then wrote Personal Services, which was directed by Terry Jones and followed the true-life story of Cynthia Payne, who ran a private brothel.

Payne was also the subject of Leland's next film his directorial debut, Wish You Were Here, which chronicled her teenage years, starring Emily Lloyd.

While his next two films,...

Aasif Mandvi, Katja Herbers, and Mike Colter in Evil (2019)
Evil Season 3 Review: Another Doomscrolling Delight
Aasif Mandvi, Katja Herbers, and Mike Colter in Evil (2019)
This Evil review is based on the first three episodes of season 3. It contains no spoilers but does allude to upcoming cases and plots.

Evil season 3 exchanges the Pop-Up Book of Terrifying Things Mmxxi for The Pop-Up Book of Contemporary Demons but continues the same old story. Newly ordained Father David Acosta (Mike Colter) and his skeptical colleagues, Dr. Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers), and Ben Shakir (Aasif Mandvi), weigh proof against belief to measure miraculous delusions.

Season 3 picks up in the aftermath of the season 2 finale, when Kristen confessed to David that she murdered Orson LeRoux (Darren Pettie), the serial killer who was threatening her family, and got away with it. She and David share a kiss for absolution. What happens next is anyone’s guess, as reality is not always what it seems on Evil. The series has a knack for painting itself into a corner with season closures,...

The Full Episode Of The Animated Better Call Saul Spin-Off Slippin' Jimmy Is Free Online Now
Bryan Cranston in Breaking Bad (2008)
Back when "Breaking Bad" was drawing to a close, who would've thought that we'd be here less than 10 years later and excitedly waiting for the concluding stretch of episodes that will bring its spin-off/prequel series, "Better Call Saul," to a similarly memorable end? The Bob Odenkirk-starring series, centered on the misadventures of the criminal lawyer formerly known as Jimmy McGill (who now goes by the Saul Goodman moniker), recently aired its most shocking and characteristically brutal episode yet with its mid-season finale fittingly titled "Plan And Execution."

But as bittersweet as it is to be nearing the end of...

NCIS: Hawai'i Recap: War and Love — Grade Season 1 and the Finale
Image
NCIS: Hawai’i closed out Season 1 on Monday night with Part 2 of its freshman finale, in which Captain Milius worked again with Special Agent Tennant’s team to find out who sabotaged a prisoner exchange between the United States and Eastern Europe.

At the close of Part 1, the American journalist that was being returned to the States began violently seizing and foaming at the mouth — and as Part 2 opened, he died not long after, aboard the Coast Guard jet Jane had secured. It was then discovered that the exact same grim fate befell the Russian spy that had been handed over at the swap.

In the latest TV show ratings, CBS is reporting that NCIS: Los Angeles — which started nearly an hour late due to golf overrun — ended Season 13 with just shy of 4 million total viewers, which marks a series low; TVLine readers gave the crowd-pleasing closer an average grade of “A.”

S.W.A.T. (3.2 mil) similarly slipped with the first half hour of its own delayed finale, which marked the farewell for an original cast member.

Colbert on Kimmel Getting Covid: ‘This Is a Broadcast Emergency. TV Is Down a Jimmy!’
Stephen Colbert
Stephen Colbert made his return to CBS’ “The Late Show” on Monday night after recovering from Covid, and he was concerned to hear that another late night host — Jimmy Kimmel — has now contracted the virus.

But first, he explained that not only is he, “back, baby,” but he is doing well following his own illness.

“Now, you may have read in the New England Journal of Hot Goss that I had the Covid, and I’m very grateful that I am fully vaxxed and boosted. Feeling fine … Thank you science,” Colbert said. “But still, like I say, Covid is no fun. The first three days sucked and by day 6, I was testing negative, and now, on day 12 I’m back with a serious head cold, so go figure.”

He then quickly addressed the news that broke earlier on Monday that Kimmel was stepping back from his late night show, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!...

Image
Exclusive: The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon is making some executive changes.

Deadline understands that showrunner Jamie Granet-Bederman is stepping down and will be replaced by The Drew Barrymore Show exec producer Chris Miller.

Granet-Bederman, who has worked with Fallon for 13 years, is transitioning to develop a number of new projects with the late-night host, who has been ramping up his non-Tonight Show projects such as musical gameshow That’s My Jam via his Electric Hot Dog shingle.

Granet-Bederman has been running the NBC show since November 2020, when she took over from Gavin Purcell.

“These last 13 years working with Jimmy have been such a gift. ‘Under the Influence’ Review: An Absorbing, Unsettling Documentary Portrait of the YouTube Star David Dobrik
Image
David Dobrik, the 25-year-old YouTube superstar, has a grin that speaks a thousand words. Dobrik is the quintessence of cute — eager and baby-faced, with big dark puppy eyes and floppy brown hair combed so that it never seems combed. Clad in sweatshirts that he wears like pajamas, he looks like the comic-strip character Dondi crossed with Mark Wahlberg in 1995 crossed with the world’s smarmiest frat-house douche. When Dobrik grins, his face lights up, but he’s a self-contained firecracker. That grin is a smirk, a freeze-frame guffaw, and a snicker of contempt all at the same time. It’s the look of a class clown, of a kid who can’t believe what he’s getting away with, or of the nicest, most polite office colleague who is also, in case you weren’t looking, the worst corporate backstabber.

David Dobrik, in short, is a dude who looks a lot like America.

‘Bob’s Burgers’ Actor Jay Johnston Benched Over Alleged Participation In Capitol Riot
Image
Jay Johnston, who voiced Bob Belcher’s (H. Jon Benjamin) business rival Jimmy Pesto in 43 episodes of Bob’s Burgers, has been sidelined from the Fox animated series due to his alleged involvement in the January 6 Capitol Riot.

The Daily Beast reported Friday about Johnston’s indefinite hiatus from the series. While any possible involvement of Johnston in the events of the 6th is unclear, he’s allegedly seen in multiple photos captured at the scene last year by the FBI. Thus far, the actor has been neither arrested nor charged in connection to the riot.

Sources confirm to Deadline that Johnston, who had been recurring on Bob’s Burgers, has not been brought back to do an episode since Jan. 6, 2021, and there are no plans for his character to be featured in the foreseeable future. Reps for Fox and 20th Television Animation, which produces the series, had no comment.

The Greatest Soccer Movies
Image
The beautiful game has not been embraced by the seventh art in quite the same way as its American equivalent. Yet Soccer, or Football as we have it here, has a simplicity which makes for a thrilling and uncomplicated conflict, and yet few filmmakers centre their stories around it. Baseball is well served with A League of Their Own, Field of Dreams, The Natural, and many more, capturing the passion and drama of the game. The American variant of football has too, with Friday Night Lights, The Waterboy and Any Given Sunday showing off the variety of stories that can be told around the game. But Football (‘Soccer’) trails behind in the cinematic stakes.

That’s not to say that there aren’t some cracking films that have used football to build their dramatic stories. There is an inbuilt connection to the game, an understanding by osmosis of the importance...

‘Deception’ Review: Arnaud Desplechin Takes on Philip Roth With Unmoored, Unstable But Not Uninteresting Results
Image
You have to feel for Léa Seydoux, the star who was slated to be the all-but-official face of this year’s Cannes Film Festival, with four vehicles in the official selection. Covid intervened, preventing her representing any of them in person. But the one she’s best in was also the lowest-profile.

Placed out of competition in the new Premieres sidebar, Arnaud Desplechin’s “Deception” is a strange, stifling but frequently intriguing attempt to find a cinematic match for the literary voice of Philip Roth, from his autofictional 1990 novel of the same name. It often succeeds, which is to say the filmmaking often appropriates the self-aggrandizing indulgences and knowingly oppressive masculinity of a work that isn’t among the author’s finest. But it’s Seydoux’s sly, bright presence, as an obscure object of desire who gradually places the protagonist’s failings in relief, that keeps us involved.

Kimmel Is a Bit Weirded Out by Report That Trump Wanted the Justice Department to Investigate Him (Video)
Saturday Night Live (1975)
On Tuesday’s episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Kimmel was pretty unnerved by the report that back in 2019, President Donald Trump wanted to sic government agencies on him and other late-night Trump critics. But the ABC host still offered to send the disgraced former president a complimentary sweater.

Kimmel was referencing a report from The Daily Beast on Tuesday, which said in part: “According to two people familiar with the matter, Trump asked advisers and lawyers in early 2019 about what the Federal Communications Commission, the court system, and—most confusingly to some Trump lieutenants—the Department of Justice could do to probe or mitigate ‘SNL,’ Jimmy Kimmel, and other late-night comedy mischief-makers.”

“I’m glad you’re excited about it. I don’t know – I don’t want him probing me,” Kimmel joked. “Can you imagine that? President Snowflake asked to send the authorities in — to stop us from making fun of him.

Sean Bean and Emily Lloyd in When Saturday Comes (1996)
Watch: 7-Minute Horror Short 'Meet Jimmy' About a Deadly Podcast
Sean Bean and Emily Lloyd in When Saturday Comes (1996)
"Welcome to the serial killer podcast. Today we have something very exclusive." Holy hell this is insanely scary. Meet Jimmy is an excellent 7-minute horror short from Dutch filmmaker David-Jan Bronsgeest. It originally premiered in 2018 at the Nederlands Film Festival and it's finally available to watch online via Short of the Week. Jennifer is obsessed with a podcast about serial killer Jimmy Twofingers. As she's tuning in to listen to his confessions while she waits for her laundry, she realizes that the killer can hear her, too. Jimmy starts talking to her and warns her: if she stops listening, she will meet him in person. Now this is a much better modern reinvention of Ringu than any remake or sequel, playing with evil podcasts instead of VHS tapes. Starring Sem de Vlieger as Jennifer, and Jord Knotter as the voice of Jimmy. Luckily this already caught the eye of Hollywood,...

Oscars: Academy Reveals List Of Films Eligible For Best Picture Race
Image
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday revealed the 366 feature films that are eligible for consideration at the 93rd Oscars, which are set to air April 25 live on ABC.

The total number of films is up from last year’s 344 films in contention.

This year’s list was compiled based on tweaked eligibility rules implemented because of the coronavirus pandemic, which has pushed the ceremony to its latest date ever. For this year, feature films had to open by February 28 in a commercial motion picture theater for a seven-day qualifying run in at least one of six metro areas: Los Angeles County, New York City, the Bay Area, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta. Drive-in theaters open nightly were included as qualifying venues, as were films intended for theatrical release but because of the lockdown made available first via streaming, VOD service or other broadcast.

When it comes to world-building, it’s one of the few advantages the medium of television has over movies, as TV shows have dozens of hours to build on exciting characters’ backstories and to go into more depth about the world’s social economy. Few shows go into as much detail as Breaking Bad, as it seems like even people and places that are just mentioned in passing have more of a backstory than some other shows’ main characters.

The criminal underworld of Albuquerque has been delicately put together and has now been explored at length in a spin-off prequel and a movie. However, there are other series that have an evil criminal underbelly that are just as screwed up as Breaking Bad’s, and they all bring something original to the table.

Watch Death Cab for Cutie’s Socially Distanced ‘Waterfalls’ Cover

Death Cab for Cutie hit Jimmy Kimmel Live Tuesday night to perform a cover of TLC’s “Waterfalls,” a cut from their Georgia EP. The record is a collection of covers by artists from the titular state in celebration and support of the Democrats’ victory in the Georgia runoffs.

The band performed the 1994 song from their respective homes, turning the R&b jam into a more indie-fied track. Before you ask, Ben Gibbard does not attempt Left Eye’s legendary rap.

The band initially dropped the new EP in December...

The 10 Best Scenes In El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, Ranked
Bryan Cranston in Breaking Bad (2008)
As if Jesse driving off into the sunset in the finale of Breaking Bad just wasn’t enough for fans, it was only a matter of time until Vince Gilligan dreamed up an ingenious way to suitably tie up the show’s one loose end. With there being so many fascinating and beloved characters in the series—albeit many of them having been killed off—the announcement of the movie had people guessing about who was going to show up and how they were going to show up.

The 5 Best Recurring Characters In Breaking Bad (& The 5 Worst)
Bryan Cranston in Breaking Bad (2008)
With there being so many absurd characters crawling around Albuquerque, the population of Breaking Bad is part of what made the show quickly become the gold standard of television. Thankfully, with the spin-off, Better Call Saul, many of the recurring characters can live on, as not all of them were given the screen time they deserved the first time around.

Between drug addicts doing anything they possibly can to score, old friends of Walt’s who are way too condescending, and well-meaning friends of Jesse’s who went down the wrong path, there’s so much depth to even the smallest of recurring characters. But not all of them are as lovable as Skinny Pete.

George C. Wolfe at an event for Cadillac Records (2008)
‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ Film Review: Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis Lead an Explosive Cast in Stagey Adaptation
George C. Wolfe at an event for Cadillac Records (2008)
Legendary theatrical director George C. Wolfe launched his screen career with adaptations of plays for PBS series like “Great Performances” and “American Playhouse,” and he brings that same politely reverential energy to August Wilson’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” But even if this version never shakes off its stage roots, it does act as a stately jewel box that houses an extraordinary ensemble of performances.

Viola Davis and the late Chadwick Boseman get the meatiest roles here — and make the most of absolutely every second they’re on camera — but this Netflix feature is just as much a showcase for the talents of the always-brilliant Colman Domingo and the legendary Glynn Turman. Wolfe not only guides his top-flight cast to greatness, but he also keeps the plays themes of art vs. commerce and representation vs. exploitation front and center.

It’s 1927 Chicago, and legendary blues singer Ma Rainey (Davis) and...

Beabadoobee Rips Through ‘Care’ on ‘Kimmel’
Image
Rising indie rocker Beabadoobee turned in a performance of her song “Care” on Jimmy Kimmel Live Wednesday, November 19th.

Frontwoman Bea Kristi and her band kept things to the point as they ripped through the vintage-sounding track, which is packed with plenty of big guitar crunch that Kristi offset with her sweet vocal croon: “I don’t want your sympathy,” she sings before the final blow-out chorus, “I guess I’ve had it rough/But you don’t really/Care, care, care.”

“Care” appears on Beabadoobee’s debut album, Fake It Flowers,...

Film Review: 1970s Music Weekend! On-Air Reviews of ‘I Am Woman’ & Jimmy Carter Rock Doc
Image
Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm on September 10th, 2020, reviewing the new films “I Am Woman” (VOD and theaters) and “Jimmy Carter: Rock & Roll President” (virtual and actual theaters).

Rating: 3.5/5.0

I Am Woman As you would guess, this film is about Helen Reddy, and the journey to her signature song. Fellow Australian Tilda Cobham-Hervey distinctly portrays Reddy, who won a contest to record a record in the U.S. in the 1960s … only to travel here with her daughter and find out the prize didn’t exist. She stayed and eventually met agent and future husband Jeff Wald (Evan Peters) who took her on a rocky path to her 1970s hit making period. 3.5/5 stars.

‘Jimmy Carter Rock & Roll President’ Review: A Nice Reminder of a President with Good Taste
Image
“Jimmy Carter Rock & Roll President” returns to the same point over and over again — the 39th President of the United States had great taste in music, and was not afraid to use it. The charming, lightweight celebration of Carter’s affinity for the likes of the Allman Brothers and Bob Dylan is loaded with endearing testimony from many of the musicians who helped Carter secure the youth vote, though the title is something of a misnomer: The Georgia peanut farmer who stormed the White House liked gospel, jazz, and country, too. His eclectic interests spoke to the complexity of a leader who remains under-appreciated in those terms, and as the movie salutes the warmth and creativity of Carter’s mind through the music, it’s .

Anyone looking for profound insights into Carter’s post-presidency life won’t find them here, but Jonathan Demme already provided that more sophisticated look at...
