Leonardo DiCaprio Could Have Been a Superhero—Here’s Why He Turned Down Batman and Spider-Man (Photo Credit – Facebook)
Hollywood’s A-list actor Leonardo DiCaprio has played diversified roles in films ranging from intense dramas like The Revenant and Shutter Islands to his iconic works like Titanic and Inception. Despite his renowned reputation as one of the industry’s most talented actors, DiCaprio never appeared in any DC or Marvel universes, frequently featuring iconic stars like Gal Gadot, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Christian Bale. While he may have rejected several roles in his pursuit of delivering exceptional work, he also has turned down some iconic roles, including a superhero role.
At 19, DiCaprio earned his nomination for an Oscar for his performance in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. After this, he was offered several roles, including Richard Grayson/Robin in 1995 DC and Batman Forever. Unfortunately, the Titanic actor turned down the role.

One cannot exaggerate how popular Leonardo DiCaprio was in the late 1990s. Not only was the handsome young actor acclaimed for his performances in "This Boy's Life" and "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?," but he was also working with interesting directors like Agnieszka Holland (on "Total Eclipse") and Sam Raimi (on "The Quick and the Dead"). He had even became a legit American heartthrob after appearing in the MTV-ready "Romeo + Juliet," a reputation that seemed to become permanent when he starred in James Cameron's 1997 film "Titanic," the then highest-grossing movie of all time.
DiCaprio was deeply beloved by teenage girls everywhere, and one couldn't walk past a magazine rack without seeing Leo's mug. He was the subject of unauthorized video profiles, news stories, and salacious teen magazine spreads. DiCaprio knew about his reputation as a sex symbol and brazenly took advantage; in a 1998 profile in New York Magazine...

Jan A.P. Kaczmarek, the Polish composer who won a Oscar for his score of the 2004 film Finding Neverland, died today in Krakow following a years-long battle with Multiple System Atrophy. He was 71.
His death was announced bythe Polish Music Foundation.
A prolific composer for film and television, Kaczmarek’s credits beginning in the 1980s and building momentum in the 1990s and 2000s. Among the titles: Total Eclipse, Washington Square, Aimee and Jaguar, Unfaithful, Soldier’s Girl, The Visitor, City Island, Get Low and Paul, Apostle of Christ.
But it was his score for Finding Neverland that he’ll perhaps be most remembered for. Nominated for both BAFTA and Golden Globe awards, the score for Marc Forster’s J.M. Barrie 2004 biopic won the Oscar for Best Original Score the following year. The win made Kaczmarek an international presence in cinema.

Polish composer Jan A.P. Kaczmarek, who won a 2004 Oscar for “Finding Neverland,” died Tuesday in Krakow, the Polish Music Foundation announced. He was 71 and had suffered from Multiple System Atrophy (Msa) in recent years.
Also among Kaczmarek’s 50-plus film and television scores, mostly from the 1990s and 2000s, were “Unfaithful,” “Bliss,” “Aimee and Jaguar,” “The Visitor” and “Get Low.” He also scored the lavish four-part French-Italian miniseries of “War and Peace” in 2007.
Kaczmarek had one of the most unusual backgrounds of any film composer of his time. Born in Konin in 1953, he was educated as a lawyer. But he abandoned a planned career as a diplomat to compose music for an experimental theater company, headed by avant-garde theater director Jerzy Grotowski, in Poznan during the 1970s.
He formed his own ensemble, the Orchestra of the Eighth Day, which toured Europe in the late 1970s and early 1980s, releasing an LP,...

Leonardo DiCaprio revealed to E! News that he has thanked Sharon Stone “many times” for paying his acting salary in 1995 when the studio refused to cast him in Sam Raimi’s revisionist Western drama “The Quick and the Dead.” DiCaprio was coming off his Oscar-nominated breakthrough role in “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” at the time, and Stone was quite eager to work with the young star. She was adamant about casting DiCaprio and Russel Crowe in the film, and she was willing to pay for it.
“She said, ‘These are the two actors I want to work with,'” DiCaprio recalled. “It’s incredible. She’s been a huge champion of cinema and giving other actors opportunities, so I’m very thankful.”
“I’ve thanked her many times,” he added. “I don’t know if I sent her an actual, physical thank-you gift, but I cannot thank her enough.”

These days it’s somewhat difficult to fathom there was a time when Leonardo DiCaprio was not recognized as one of the finest actors of his generation. Born with preternaturally good looks, talent, and an obvious degree of taste, DiCaprio has grown onscreen from precocious child actor to heartthrob, to movie star, and finally to revered leading man. At least onscreen.
With that meteoric career-trajectory beginning at the remarkably early age of 18 in the movie This Boy’s Life, DiCaprio has had the rare opportunity to carefully curate and shape his career from virtually the beginning, and in the process has left behind a body of work that is increasingly choosey—and well chosen. But which are the best performances, and which are the ones that didn’t work out? Read on to find out.

A Teacher Fights For Her Job In Katalin Moldovai’s Simmering Indictment of Hungary’s Culture Wars
Agnieszka Holland’s largely forgotten (and quite awful) 1995 biopic Total Eclipse is perhaps best remembered for its lead performance by rising star Leonardo DiCaprio playing famed poet Arthur Rimbaud with a heavy American accent. Yet, nearly thirty years later, the film unexpectedly sets off a scandal in Katalin Moldovai’s captivating and simmering feature debut Without Air in which a high school teacher’s fight to save her job serves as a pointed political indictment of a country so focused on stirring up cultural firestorms that it ignores the real issues that threaten its economic and ecological future.…...

On the surface, it looks like any other teenage love story: Abel, an absent-minded high-school student in Budapest, hopelessly pines for his best friend, Erika, dreamily staring out the classroom window when the teacher calls his name. On the day of his final exam, he draws a blank: Rather than bury his head in his history books, Abel’s had his head in the clouds.
But an off-hand comment by one of his examiners, about the tricolor ribbon pinned to his lapel — a nationalist symbol in Viktor Orbán’s Hungary — sparks a controversy that soon snowballs into a nationwide scandal. For Hungarian filmmaker Gábor Reisz, the director of “Explanation for Everything,” the debate cuts to the heart of a question that has increasingly dominated public discourse in his country since the rise of the right-wing prime minister: “Are you a real Hungarian?”

Director William Nunez describes why he focused on a time when the poet Robert Graves – best known for a memoir Goodbye to All That and historical novel I, Claudius – left his wife and family in pursuit of creativity at any cost
How do you make the life of a poet work on screen? It helps if they had scandalous personal lives. Robert Graves was last seen on the sidelines of Terence Davies’s biopic as the friend of the first world war poet Siegfried Sassoon (Benediction). Now the tables are turned, with a cameo of Sassoon in a film about the early career of the man who would go on to become professor of poetry at Oxford and to win the Queen’s gold medal for poetry.
Graves is an unfashionable figure today, known chiefly through I, Claudius, the TV serialisation of two of his novels, starring Derek Jacobi as the Roman emperor.

In a better time for the world, we’d all be hitting the karaoke bar tonight to mourn the late great Jim Steinman. Introducing a musical performance at the Academy Awards isn’t normally the biggest of deals, but for Chilean newcomer Daniela Vega, it was a landmark opportunity: At the 2018 ceremony, she became the first transgender person ever to present at the Oscars. The film that got her there, meanwhile, had already made history that same night. Sebastián Lelio’s uplifting drama “A Fantastic Woman,” in which Vega gave a luminous performance as a trans woman battling heartbreak and discrimination, won that year’s international feature award — becoming the first film with a transgender lead to win an Oscar in any category.
“Thank you so much for this moment,” Vega said from the stage, before segueing into a tribute to gay Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino’s much-nominated queer romance “Call Me by Your Name”: It was a minute of airtime that contained more global LGBTQ visibility than many a previous broadcast.

In between scoring his first Oscar nomination with “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” (1993) and the career-making releases of “Romeo + Juliet” (1996) and “Titanic” (1997), Leonardo DiCaprio starred in three 1995 releases that shaped his image as a rising actor: “The Basketball Diaries,” “The Quick and the Dead,” and “Total Eclipse.” The middle title starred DiCaprio opposite Sharon Stone in a Sam Raimi-directed revisionist Western about a woman gunslinger (Stone) who visits a frontier town and clashes with its leader (Gene Hackman). Stone was a producer on the project and reveals in her new book, “The Beauty of Living Twice” (via Insider), she paid for DiCaprio’s salary herself after studio TriStar Pictures refused to cast him.

The Tulip is one of the stand-out stars of season 1 of “The Masked Dancer.” She landed a spot in the Top 4 competing on February 10 with her sensational routine last week set to “My Boyfriend’s Back” by the Chiffons. That display of dance skill had the four judges singing her praises. However we are more convinced than ever that the four judges are on the wrong track about the Tulip being Charli D’Amelio, Ariana Grande or Heather Morris.
To solve the mystery of who is hiding inside the Tulip costume, we’ve gone back and watched all of her earlier appearances: “Fergalicious” by Fergie on December 27; “Fields of Gold” by Eva Cassidy on January 20; and “Thank U, Next” by Ariana Grande on January 27. And we’ve taken another look at all of the clues videos for Tulip.

Brat TV announced the renewal of “Attaway General” for Season 2, with filming already underway.
The series, which is known for featuring young talent — including TikTok stars like Dixie D’Amelio — follows a group of teenagers who volunteer at the Attaway General Hospital in hopes of preparing for future medical careers. The first season of “Attaway General” premiered on YouTube but is now available on Hulu.
“Too often, Gen Z audiences have to choose between the talent they follow and the shows they
stream — and Attaway General offers the best of both worlds,” said Brat TV co-founder Rob Fishman in a statement.
Social media stars Madi Monroe, Lauren Kettering and Eric Montanez will return for the second season. D’Amelio, another of the show’s main cast members, will not feature in the series past Season 1, however. The influencer, whose acting career began with “Attaway General,” is unable to take part in...

The opening credits of Ilyssa Goodman’s “Next Level” are, perhaps, the most interesting thing about it. They begin with the credit for the producer — and when was the last time you saw that in a theater? — and then work their way backwards to the cast, crew and director, as if to say that the fact that this movie got made is, itself, the most noteworthy accomplishment of all.
“Next Level” is a song-and-dance drama about a summer camp for teen enthusiasts of this business we call show. The audience is informed, in no uncertain terms, in the movie’s second scene, that this is one of the most prestigious organizations of its kind in the country. But we are informed in literally every other scene that the organization employs only two people and is taking up space in a disused corner of a community-college campus.

Does Leonardo DiCaprio need to start rethinking the way he chooses his film projects? It’s a topic many moviegoers are discussing in the aftermath of a Hollywood Reporter article naming Leonardo DiCaprio the world’s “last movie star.” DiCaprio is one of few stars left in the industry whose name carries serious box office clout, but he hasn’t necessarily leveraged that star power to lift up women and minority directors. Guy Lodge, film critic for The Guardian and Variety, made a viral note on Twitter that DiCaprio has not worked with a female director since 1995.
“This is all well and good, and some fine work has come out of it, but I wouldn’t call his choices adventurous either: huge studio prestige productions with established male directors,” Lodge wrote in reaction to the THR story. “He hasn’t acted in a film with a female director since 1995, which...

Brat, the Gen Z-focused digital studio that works with tween influencers like Annie LeBlanc and Mackenzie Ziegler, is getting into the branded content business.
The company, whose co-founders include Rob Fishman and Darren Lachtman -- who previously founded the Twitter-owned influencer marketing platform Niche -- has just completed its first ad campaign for Happy Death Day 2U, a PG-13 horror feature from Universal. The campaign comprised four custom TV-style spots starring Brat talent that aired as 45-second shorts in front of its YouTube programming, with bonus content distributed on Instagram.
“We spent eighteen months focused singularly on building the brand, and creating our tent-pole shows,” Fishman tells Tubefilter of the company’s foray into branded content. “With big hits like Chicken Girls, Total Eclipse, and Zoe Valentine on our hands, we're now ready to bring advertisers to the table in a meaningful way."

Teen-focused digital studio Brat has tapped a trio of young stars for its latest series, Total Eclipse, including Dance Moms personality Mackenzie Ziegler, vlogger Lauren Orlando (1.1 million subscribers), and actress-model Emily Skinner.
The 11-episode series will juxtapose a high school setting with a “fantasy moon world” that lies in the imagination of Ziegler’s character, according to Variety. A release date has not yet been announced. Ziegler (pictured above, center) plays a dreamy teen who is ditched by her friends, while Orlando's character is a witchy newcomer to town. The series will also star Nadia Turner (pictured above, left) and Musical.ly creator Devenity Perkins. Brat's originals are primarily distributed on YouTube, where the roughly one-year-old media brand counts 1.3 million subscribers.

Polish auteur Agnieszka Holland, once the protégé of Krzysztof Zanussi, is still best remembered for early 90s titles such as Europa Europa (1990) and her Arthur Rimbaud biopic starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Total Eclipse (1993). Her last feature was 2011’s In Darkness, nominated for Best Foreign Language film that year, and she’s been steadily working in television, from the superb mini-series “Burning Bush,” to English language items such as episodes of “House of Cards,” and the t.v. treatment of “Rosemary’s Baby.” She’s been attempting to adapt famed Polish novelist Olga Tokarzuk’s Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead for several years, and phases of filmmaking have commenced on her adaptation, known as Game Count and co-written by Tokarzuk. By Michael Russnow As Oscar voters continue to mark their ballots until this Wednesday, I wonder what goes into their thinking? Do they vote specifically for what they believe is the best achievement of last year, a surprising performance and accomplishment or is it a cumulative assessment of someone’s career? For all these reasons, and not just one, I’m going against the grain of what appears to be the general consensus and strongly suggest that Leonardo DiCaprio deserves the Oscar this year for The Wolf of Wall Street, even more than favorite Matthew McConaughey. This doesn’t in any way diminish McConaughey’s performance in Dallas Buyers Club. It was terrific, and the subject matter of the film made it that much more compelling. However, DiCaprio’s execution, in my view, was even more powerful, in particular as it was a totally different characterization and portrayal than we...

Hotly tipped for a foreign language Oscar for In Darkness, director Agnieszka Holland talks about making films under communist rule – and directing The Wire and The Killing
Agnieszka Holland is the dark horse of the 2012 Oscars, which seems oddly fitting. Her latest film, In Darkness, plays as a begrimed Schindler tale, with its protagonist, Leopold Socha, hiding out in the sewers of Lviv while the Holocaust rages overhead. It has brought the 63-year-old director a nomination in the foreign language category, where she is pitted against the highly fancied A Separation, and marks the latest twist in a career that has taken her from Warsaw to Prague, Paris and La.
"Where is home?" mutters Holland, sipping bottled water in a London club. "Maybe this is." Dressed for purpose with her utilitarian hairdo and resilient, thick-framed glasses, she briskly explains that she made two Holocaust dramas before In Darkness (Angry Harvest; Europa,...

David Cronenberg analyses the pioneering work of Jung and Freud in this engrossing and thought-provoking drama
David Cronenberg has long been recognised as a prime exponent of the psychological thrillers known as body horror movies, stories of terror involving parasites, metamorphoses, diseases, decomposition and physical wounds, such as Shivers, Videodrome, Naked Lunch and his version of The Fly. Now, as he approaches 70, an enfant terrible turned cinematic elder statesman operating from the Canadian fringe of the cultural mainstream, he has stood back from the visceral fray.
His engrossing, admirably acted new film, A Dangerous Method, takes an objective, historical look at the early days of psychoanalysis and the people, notably Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, who provided us with the conceptual framework and language for discussing the phenomena and experiences he has been dramatising over the past 40 years.
Helping him in this enterprise is the British playwright and screenwriter Christopher Hampton,...

It's been a while since we've heard from director David Cronenberg. But he's back, with Viggo Mortensen in tow, with a new film called A Dangerous Method.
A Dangerous Method is a somewhat-speculative historical drama concerning the relationship of famed psychiatrists Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. While this seems like an unusual topic for Cronenberg, as you'll see in the trailer embedded below this flick seems to contain some of Cronenberg's favorite themes: complex human relationships and outré sexuality.
The flick was written by Christopher Hampton and is based on his play The Talking Cure, which was based on John Kerr's book A Most Dangerous Method. Academy Award winner Hampton is well versed in historical dramas, having written Dangerous Liaisons, Mary Reilly, Total Eclipse and Atonement, among others.
This is Mortenson's third film in a row with Cronenberg. Other cast members include Keira Knightly, as the woman who complicates the shrinks' relationship,...

Zac Efron is not willing to take on risky roles. The "High School Musical" star cites "Shutter Island" actor Leonardo DiCaprio as his idol but admitted he would be unwilling to take on risky parts, such as a teen heroin addict in "The Basketball Diaries" and a gay French poet in "Total Eclipse", like Leonardo did.

In the new comedy Diary of a Wimpy Kid, released in the UK on August 25, Zachary Gordon stars as Greg Heffley, who faces the trials and tribulations of starting secondary school and struggling to fit in.
Life is made more interesting by his uncool best friend Rowley Jefferson, played by Robert Capron.
Zachary and director Thor Freudenthal had earlier chatted on the Vancouver set.
Here, the youngster speaks about his role after filming was completed, revealing his own real-life middle school nerves and offering some tips to youngsters facing the same ordeal.
Q: What is the universal appeal of this film?
A: I would say what's great about this movie is how funny and how cool it is because you've never seen a kid like Greg get himself into all these weird situations. He gets tackled by a girl he is wrestling, he gets beaten up by the weirdest kid in school.
