Twenty years after its release, Pride & Prejudice director Joe Wright is reflecting on the continued presence of his first feature film—a period romance that has found a renewed audience through social media and a theatrical rerelease. As Focus Features brings the 2005 adaptation back to theaters, Wright and the original creative team are revisiting the choices, performances, and artistic methods that gave the film its enduring character.
The film’s unexpected online popularity surprised Wright. “Strange,” “extraordinary,” and “very gratifying” were the words he used to describe seeing his work turned into memes, TikToks, and even iced onto cakes. One of the most widely quoted lines comes from Claudie Blakley’s Charlotte Lucas: “I’m 27 years old. I’ve no money and no prospects. I’m already a burden to my parents. And I’m frightened.” The scene was never in the script. Wright credits Emma Thompson, who...

On the heels of the 20th anniversary of Oscar-nominated Pride & Prejudice, helmer Joe Wright reflected on his Austenian adaptation’s second life in the internet era, calling it “strange” and “kind of extraordinary,” as well as ultimately “very nice, very gratifying.” Particularly, the filmmaker revealed that among the most-discussed and much-memed speeches in the period drama — delivered by Claudie Blakley’s Charlotte Lucas — was improvised by writer Emma Thompson.
Speaking with Mashable, he said, “Deborah Moggach wrote the screenplay and did an amazing, amazing job. And then we asked Emma Thompson to help with a little bit of the dialogue. And I went round to her house, very nervous, with my little briefcase and we walked up onto Hampstead Heath onto a hill. And she said, ‘Sit down, take out your notebook and take notes.’ So as she improvised scenes, I wrote them down. And that was one of...

Joe Wright’s 2005 Pride & Prejudice adaptation is a cinematic gem, weaving Jane Austen’s wit with visceral emotion. Among its standout moments is Charlotte Lucas’ raw, unforgettable speech to Elizabeth Bennet, where she defends her pragmatic engagement to the cringeworthy Mr. Collins with the searing line, cutting deep into a common woman’s heart.
The heartfelt line emphasizes that not everyone has the luxury of chasing romance or sticking to a list of criteria when choosing a life partner. It beautifully contrasts the characters of Charlotte and Elizabeth, showcasing their differing perspectives. Emma Thompson, the talented Oscar-winning writer and actress who enhanced the script, brought a unique flair to the dialogue, largely improvising those iconic moments that resonate so deeply..

Given the vast accolades that have been heaped upon Ang Lee over the course of his decades-long career, it would be difficult to classify the Taiwanese filmmaker as “underrated.” Two Academy Awards for directing; two Golden Lions from the Venice Film Festival; two Golden Bears from Berlin (the only director to do so); and historical status as an ambassador of the late-century crossover of the Taiwanese New Wave into American film culture.
And yet, in the periodic conversations arguing the best filmmakers in the business today, Lee’s name is one rarely, if ever, mentioned. Now maybe that’s because the man hasn’t made anything in a good while (capping off the previous decade with easily his worst film), but Lee’s status as a bold craftsman with a penchant for tender nuance shouldn’t be disregarded; with nearly every film, Lee is a director who pushes himself in...

Emma Thompson is the two-time Oscar-winning multi-hyphenate who has left her indelible mark as an actress and a writer for more than 30 years. Let's take a look back at 18 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born on April 15, 1959, in Paddington, London, England, Thompson broke through with American audiences thanks to her Oscar-winning lead turn in the sumptuous Merchant-Ivory production "Howards End" (1992). She reunited with the filmmakers - along with her costar Anthony Hopkins - for "The Remains of the Day" (1993), which brought her a second Best Actress bid. That same year, she competed in the supporting category for "In the Name of the Father," pulling off the rare feat of snagging two acting nominations in the same year. She returned to the Oscar race both as a performer and as a writer for the Jane Austin adaptation "Sense and Sensibility" (1995), for which she earned a Best Actress...

Amazon is going all-in on Sony Pictures Television's adaptation of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The new series, based on the Crane-Iron Series by novelist Wang Dulu (which was famously turned into an Ang Lee film back in 2000), will be created and produced by Lucifer and Mrs. Davis writer Jason Ning as well as the prolific and acclaimed executive producer of Outlander and Battlestar Galactica fame, Ronald D. Moore.
The series has been in the works since 2023, with Moore hopping aboard Ning's vision sometime last year, according to Deadline's exclusive reporting. Both Moore and Ning have overall deals with Sony Pictures Television, and worked together on the epic science fiction series The Expanse back in 2016. Since then, Moore has gone on to create series like For All Mankind, and Ning wrote several episodes of Mrs. Davis and was a co-executive producer on The Brothers Sun. The history of any important film festival is the history of the films and filmmakers they’ve showcased and championed: what’s their tally of breakthrough filmmakers and esteemed auteurs who have defined the past century of cinema?
This is why Berlin, Cannes and Venice, after nearly a century of annual unspoolings (as Variety likes to call them) retain their reputations and the vitality of their programming and festival operations.
There is a parallel history as well, one that charts the important fests’ cultural and economic impacts upon the communities and countries where they’re held.
The French film industry is a primary European powerhouse of collaborative private and public financing and film promotion, and it has coordinated beautifully for decades with the Cannes Film Festival. To the good fortunes of both.

The Regency period drama genre continues to have a chokehold on viewers in the year 2025. Between anxiously waiting for more news from Bridgerton Season 4 to the availability of period pieces being available on streaming, fans have an endless stream of the genre at their fingertips through their preferred streaming providers. Now, based on the novel by Gill Hornby, we're getting a fresh entry into the genre: Miss Austen. The Masterpiece on PBS miniseries stars Keeley Hawes as Cassandra Austen, older sister to the famous author, Jane Austen who gave us famous works: Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Persuasion, and more. The trailer seems to follow dual timelines, one of Cassandra in the present, played by Hawes, sometime after Jane Austen's death in 1817 and also when Jane was still alive, and the sisters were young women. Patsy Ferran plays Jane and Synnøve Karlsen plays a young Cassandra. The logline is...

Selena Gomez's chances at earning her first acting nomination at the Oscars could now be ruined. Although she is perhaps best known as a pop star and businesswoman, Gomez has also been an actor since she was a child. After being cast on Barney & Friends in the early 2000s, she went on to play roles in a variety of prominent film and television projects, including Wizards of Waverly Place, Only Murders in the Building, Hotel Transylvania, and Spring Breakers.
However, she delivered one of her best performances yet after joining the Emilia Pérez cast. The 2024 Jacques Audiard musical, which also stars Zoe Saldaña and Karla Sofía Gascón, sees Gomez playing the wife of a Mexican cartel leader. In addition to allowing her to showcase her musical chops in performances of songs such as the Oscar-shortlisted "Mi Camino," the movie has allowed her to be considered an Oscar frontrunner...

When you're trying to make your name in Hollywood, everyone has to start somewhere. It's a fact of life for just about every major actor or actress: You have to start small with your roles, like Amy Adams appearing in the beauty-pageant satire "Drop Dead Gorgeous" or Steven Spielberg's "Catch Me If You Can" years before she became an A-lister. Perhaps one of the most famous examples people love to trot out is that Michael Shannon plays a Wrestlemania-loving young man very briefly near the end of the 1993 comedy classic "Groundhog Day," 15 years before his Oscar-nominated turn in the Sam Mendes film "Revolutionary Road." But not every actor's humble beginning is the kind of thing they may want to brag about.

When James Cameron's Titanic hit theaters in 1997, it became a global hit, becoming the first film to bring over one billion dollars to the worldwide box office. It played a significant role in catapulting Kate Winslet and Leonardo Dicaprio into international stardom. Tomboy, tomcat, tomfoolery these are just a few well-known terms that begin with Tom. But when and why did the name Tom come to represent the so-called everyman? The name Tom originates from Thomas, a name of one of the disciples in the Bible, and it means twin. The names popularity seems to peak in 1960s America (via Nameberry), but has steadily declined over the years. The fact that Tom was such a popular name in the baby boomer era may explain why so many Toms exist in the entertainment industry today.
Ask anyone to name a famous actor named Tom, and there are sure to be a wide set of options to choose from. From Tom Felton of Harry Potter fame to Tom Hopper from Netflixs Umbrella Academy to The White Lotus season 2 villain Tom Hollander, there are almost too many Toms to count. Yet when it comes to the most famous of Toms,...

Taiwanese filmmaker Ang Lee added a prestigious honor Tuesday to his already exceedingly decorated career in the arts. The three-time Oscar winner was presented with the Praemium Imperiale at a black-tie ceremony in Tokyo. Often described as Asia’s version of the Nobel Prize, the award is handed out annually to artists working in various fields. A mark of the prize’s prestige, past honorees in the film and theater category have included true icons of film history, such as Federico Fellini, Akira Kurosawa, Jean-Luc Godard, Martin Scorsese and Catherine Deneuve.
“I’d like to think that my career is a never-ending school where I learn about cinema and about myself and about the world. There is no end to that learning,” Lee said during a news conference in Tokyo ahead of the awards ceremony. “As the first person from Taiwan to receive this award, I’m proud and deeply grateful.

Was Gwyneth Paltrow Offered A Key Role In James Cameron’s Titanic? (Photo Credit – Prime Video/Instagram)
Picture this: Gwyneth Paltrow as Rose in Titanic. Wild, right? It almost happened. Paltrow was right in the mix before Kate Winslet claimed the role and made movie magic with Leonardo DiCaprio. But why didn’t she board the most famous ship in cinema history? It had much to do with corsets, career moves, and James Cameron’s fear of being too predictable.
James Cameron, the mastermind behind Titanic, wanted to avoid the obvious. Winslet was already earning a nickname in Hollywood: “Corset Kate.” By the mid-’90s, she had become synonymous with historical dramas, thanks to roles in Sense and Sensibility, Jude, and Kenneth Branagh’s Hamlet. Casting her as Rose, an early 20th-century socialite, felt almost too predictable for Cameron. “I thought, ‘Oh, man, this is going to look like the laziest casting in the world,...

Oxford grad Hugh Grant has outgrown most of his romantic comedy ticks from his early years – flopsy-mopsy hair, fluttery eyelashes and charming stutter – and has matured into an exceptional and versatile actor. Not that he has lost his sense of humor. Anyone who chuckled over his villainous turn in this year’s “Paddington 2” as a pompous, cravat-wrapped actor who frames his cuddly ursine co-star for a crime he didn’t commit can testify to that Then there was his finely tuned scoundrel turn in the BBC miniseries, “A Very English Scandal,“ in which his Parliament member Jeremy Thorpe plots the botched murder of his male lover.
Grant began his acting career in the ‘80s as secondary player in both British period pieces — some good (“Maurice”) and others faintly ridiculous (“The Lair of the White Moon”) – and Hollywood comedies (the gangster farce “Mickey Blue Eyes”). But any hopes that he...

Kate Winslet represents the third generation of actors in her family. Her grandparents ran a repertory theater in England and her father struggled for many years as an actor himself while working other jobs to support his family. Winslet however found incredible success quite early in her career and by the time she turned 30, she had already received four Oscar nominations and played the female lead in the biggest box office blockbuster Hollywood had ever seen, “Titanic.”
While success in films came easy for Winslet, the one thing that did seem to elude her for a long time was recognition from the Academy. She would have to wait through five Oscar losses before the award would finally come her away for the 2008 movie “The Reader.” She would lampoon her Oscar troubles (and ironically receive an Emmy nomination) on an episode of the Ricky Gervais comedy “Extras.” On that show Winslet...

British actor Hugh Grant, known for roles in romantic comedies, is taking on a darker character in his latest film “Heretic.” The psychological thriller places Grant in the unsettling role of Mr. Reed, a man who disturbs two young Mormon missionaries visiting his home. Critics have lauded Grant’s movie for its exploration of religious themes and tension instead of graphic horror. They also praise his disturbing yet compelling performance, one that demonstrates Grant’s evolution as an actor.
“Heretic” opens nationwide on November 8. In the movie, missionaries Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East encounter Grant’s character Mr. Reed while doing missionary work. What starts as a normal visit takes a frightening turn as Reed engages the women in an intense game of manipulation. Critics note how the film relies on the confining setting of Reed’s home and mind games instead of shocking visuals to build suspense.

Hugh Grant has made a surprising mark in the horror genre with his latest film, Heretic, which has achieved a remarkable Rotten Tomatoes score. Heretic offers a chilling new perspective on Grant, who portrays the sinister Mr. Reed in this religious horror film by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the writing-director duo known for A Quiet Place. The story follows young Mormon missionaries Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) and Sister Paxton (Chloe East), who encounter Mr. Reed while attempting to share their faith. What starts as a routine visit quickly spirals into a terrifying game of cat-and-mouse.

Even though it was nominated for fourteen Academy Awards, it won eleven of them, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress. It starred some of the best modern-day actors, including its two main leads, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.

Ang Lee is an Oscar-winning filmmaker who has worked in a variety of genres and styles to explore the lives of people around the globe. Let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in Taiwan in 1954, Lee’s interest in film brought him to NYU’s graduate program, where he worked as a crew member on classmate Spike Lee‘s thesis project, “Joe’s Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads.” He directed his first feature, “Pushing Hands” (1991) at the age of 37.
Lee followed up his debut with back-to-back international successes, each one scoring Oscar nominations as Best Foreign Language Film: “The Wedding Banquet” (1993) and “Eat Drink Man Woman” (1994). In both films, the director explored the kinds of complex familial relationships that would animate many of his stories.

Alien: Romulus (Fede Alvarez)
It’s a dire, inhospitable environment, wherein corporate interests can give way to ghoulish monstrosities, and those just trying to navigate the chokehold of capitalism are doing their best to survive. In a way, Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus may be the most meta Alien film to date. No stranger to playing in others’ sandboxes, the Evil Dead helmer is, at first glance, an encouraging fit for the sci-fi horror franchise. Like the original, 2017’s Alien: Covenant––an underrated high point for these films––was at its peak when threading its headier notions with gleefully mean-spirited cynicism towards its human subjects. One of the all-time best Jane Austen books may be getting a new version on Netflix! Over 200 years after her death, the author is as beloved as ever. Generations have grown up on her novels, which were ahead of their time, exploring issues of feminism, class, and some wonderful romances. In just six books, Austen made herself a literary icon who’s influenced countless writers since.
Not surprisingly, adaptations of Austen’s works have been plentiful. There have even been adaptations of her two posthumous novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion and her unfinished book Sanditon.
Trying to narrow down the best Austen works is difficult as many will cite Sense and Sensibility, which was adapted into a 1995 film directed by Ang Lee and starring Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet, with Thompson also writing the script, earning her an Oscar. Yet, to many, the topper of Austen’s works is Pride and Prejudice.

With films like Notting Hill, Sense and Sensibility, and Music and Lyrics, Hugh Grant cemented his position as our favorite romantic lead. However, with the Bridget Jones franchise, we also got to see him as the antagonist to the romance between Jones, played by Rene Zellweger, and Mark Darcy, played by Colin Firth. After skipping 2016s Bridget Jones Baby, the actor will return in the upcoming installment Mad About the Boy. In a recent conversation with Graham Norton (via Indiewire), the actor opened up about his return.

From her breakout role in the 1994 film, Heavenly Creatures to becoming a global icon with the 1997 film, Titanic, the actress has built herself quite a versatile career. Kate Winslet reflects on her Oscar losses before eventually winning in 2009. She is best known for playing Rose DeWitt Bukater opposite Leonardo DiCaprio's Jack Dawson in James Cameron's period romance Titanic, which earned her an Oscar nomination. However, over the next decade, Winslet would only be nominated but never to win. The actor received her first nomination in 1996 for playing a supporting role in Sense and Sensibility. She would receive additional nominations for Iris, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Little Children until finally going home with an Oscar in 2009 for The Reader.

Kate Winslet says losing several Oscars never added pressure to her career to deliver an award-worthy performance. Winslet was always a bridesmaid and never a bride at the Academy Awards for a large chunk of her career, earning five Oscar nominations over a decade and never winning the prize. Hugh Grant is “miserable” due to the closure of his local movie theater.
The actor lamented Cineworld’s decision to close a quarter of its cinemas in the U.K., including his own Fulham Rd outpost.
“Fulham Rd cinema closing after 94 years. Strangely unbearable,” Grant posted on X. “Let’s all sit at home and watch ‘content’ on ‘streaming.’ While scrolling. Miserable face emoji.”
Actor Michael Warburton commented on Grant’s post, writing, “Part of my Cinema-going history for sure and therefore damnably sad & infuriating in equal measure. Once these palaces are gone they don’t come back people!”
Of course, Grant isn’t entirely removed from the shift in entertainment industry business models, as his recent film “Unfrosted” debuted solely on Netflix. His additional roles in “Wonka” and the upcoming horror film “Heretic” both have theatrical releases. Grant is also reprising his beloved role in the latest “Bridget Jones” franchise installment,...
