Charles Shyer, Writer-Director on ‘Baby Boom’ and the ‘Father of the Bride’ Remakes, Dies at 83
Image
Charles Shyer, the director and Oscar-nominated writer who teamed with then-wife Nancy Meyers on such audience-pleasing, feel-good comedies as Private Benjamin, Irreconcilable Differences, Baby Boom and Father of the Bride, has died. He was 83.

Shyer died Friday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after a brief illness, his daughter Hallie Meyers-Shyer, writer and director of the 2017 Reese Witherspoon comedy Home Again, told The Hollywood Reporter.

The son of veteran assistant director Melville Shyer, one of the founders of the DGA, Shyer started out writing for sitcoms like The Odd Couple and The Partridge Family with then-partner Alan Mandel before they broke into the movies with the box office smash Smokey and the Bandit (1977), starring Burt Reynolds and Sally Field.

Shyer’s career skyrocketed when he joined forces with Meyers and Harvey Miller to pen the screenplay for Private Benjamin (1980), directed by Howard Zieff and featuring Goldie Hawn in her first big-screen starring role.

Succession's Kieran Culkin Says His First Director Called Him a "Dummy" when He was Just Six Years Old
Image
Many, many years before Kieran Culkin won an Emmy Award for his role as Roman Roy in Succession, he had an on-set experience that was less than ideal. People reports via the Smartless podcast, that while making his first commercial the director called him a “dummy.”

“First professional experience I had was a commercial when I was 6,” said Kieran to Smartless hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett. Although Culkin doesn’t exactly remember what the commercial was for he said it was “something to do with learning disabilities.”

“The concept was I’m standing in front of a chalkboard with chalk in my hand, and I don’t know how to solve the easy thing in front of me,” recalled Culkin. “And the kids in the class are supposed to be calling me a dummy and stupid, all that,” he continued.

Kieran Culkin Says Director Called Him "Dummy. Idiot. Stupid" During First Job
Image
Hollywood is a curious place—just ask Kieran Culkin. The actor—who has been acting since he was a wee child—recently recounted a story about his first professional acting job, and it does not paint the director in the best light. Unless you think teasing and bullying a kid on set is a totally fine and chill thing to do.

While speaking with the men of the SmartLess podcast (via Variety)—hosted by Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett—Culkin was asked about, and then told, the story of his first acting job. The Succession and A Real Pain star recalled filming a commercial that had "something to do with learning disabilities," which made the director feel the need to hurl insults at the young child to get him into character, leaving the hosts of the podcast nearly speechless in the process.

Kieran Culkin Says Director Called Him ‘Dummy. Idiot. Stupid’ During First Acting Gig at Six Years Old to Get Him Into Character: ‘What’s Wrong With You?’
Image
Kieran Culkin appeared on the latest episode of the “Smartless” podcast (via People) and remembered an uncomfortable incident that occurred on his first acting job when he was six years old. The Emmy winner was filming a commercial that had “something to do with learning disabilities.” The director allegedly called Culkin an “idiot” to try and help him get into character, but Culkin was only a child and didn’t understand.

“First professional experience I had was a commercial when I was six,” Culkin said. “The concept was I’m standing in front of a chalkboard with chalk in my hand and I don’t know how to solve the easy thing in front of me. And the kids in the class are supposed to be calling me a dummy and stupid, all that.”

Eugene and Dan Levy Officially Set as Emmys Hosts
Image
With less than a month to go before the 76th Emmy Awards, the telecast’s hosts are finally set. As expected, the father-son duo of Eugene Levy and Dan Levy will emcee this year’s Emmys, which take place on Sunday, Sept. 15, live on ABC.

The two made history in 2020 as the first father and son to win major awards in the same year, thanks to “Schitt’s Creek.” That year — in which winners appeared remotely, due to the Covid-19 pandemic — saw Eugene Levy win for outstanding comedy actor and Dan Levy win for supporting comedy actor. Dan Levy also picked up wins for writing and directing, while both won the outstanding comedy series Emmy as exec producers.

“For two Canadians who won our Emmys in a literal quarantine tent, the idea of being asked to host this year in an actual theater was incentive enough,” the Levys said in a joint statement.

David E. Diano, a veteran camera operator with credits including Tombstone, The Fast and the Furious, Wedding Crashers and Spider-Man 3, has died. He was 71.

Diano died Jan. 22 at Huntington Hospital in Pasadena of coronary issues after a battle with prostate cancer, his wife, still photographer Gemma Lamana, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Diano served as president of the Society of Camera Operators from 2003-04 before deciding not to run for a second term.

“To write that David was a one-of-a-kind friend to those of us who worked with him would be an understatement,” Soc historical chair Michael Frediani said in a statement. “His kindness, artistry and boyish smile endeared him to countess friends and fellow industry colleagues — and that is what set him apart from many,”

Diano shot 17 movies for cinematographer William Fraker, a six-time Oscar nominee, from 1983-2002. Those films included War Games (1983), Murphy’s Romance (1985), Baby Boom (1987), Memoirs of an Invisible Man...

‘Awards Chatter’ Podcast — Martin Short (‘Only Murders in the Building’ and ‘Saturday Night Live’)
Image
Martin Short, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, is one of the funniest people in show business and has been for the past half-century. A writer, actor and variety specialist, he has been nominated for 14 Emmys and two Tonys, winning one of each. This year, he’s Emmy-eligible as a producer and star of the second season of Hulu’s comedy series Only Murders in the Building, on which he plays a bankrupt Broadway producer who teams up with two neighbors — played by Short’s longtime friend and collaborator Steve Martin and Gen Z queen Selena Gomez — to solve murders in their New York City apartment building; and for co-hosting, with Steve Martin, the Dec. 10, 2022 episode of NBC’s Saturday Night Live.

Short’s comedic abilities have long been revered. In 1994, The New York Times described him as “a comic chameleon”; in 2018, Esquire called him “a living legend,...

Adam Sandler

Anime series will be all the rage on Hulu with the dubbed version of the new popular series “Chainsaw Man” arriving, along with “Spy x Family” and “Black Clover.” If you’re looking for something a little bit more kid-friendly, the family can al enjoy “Despicable Me” and “Despicable 2,” “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days” and “Nanny McPhee.” For the lovers and heartless romantics, “Dear John” and “Date Night...

Hulu New Releases: April 2023
Image
Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2023 don’t feature many blockbusters, but if we dig a little, I’m sure we can find some gems.

Perhaps the most promising items are on the TV side of things. Tiny Beautiful Things premieres on April 7 and stars Kathryn Hahn as “a floundering writer who becomes a revered advice columnist while her own life is falling apart.” That will be followed by comedy Am I Being Unreasonable? on April 11 and two documentaries: high school football story Algiers, America (April 19) and Tupac Shakur piece Dear Mama (April 22).

The best TV candidate this month, however, is probably Saint X on April 26. This series, told via multiple timelines, “explores and upends the girl-gone-missing genre as it explores how a young woman’s mysterious death during an idyllic Caribbean vacation creates a traumatic ripple effect that eventually pulls her surviving sister into a dangerous pursuit of the truth.

Everything to Know About the Culkin Siblings, Including Macaulay, Kieran, and Rory
Image
Image Source: Getty / Jamie McCarthy

Kieran Culkin is opening up about growing up with his massive and famous family in New York City. Kieran, who stars as Roman Roy on "Succession," is one of seven kids shared by Kit Culkin and Patricia Brentrup. The pair never married, though their split in the 1990s and ensuing custody battle became tabloid fodder because Kieran's brother Macaulay had become very famous after starring in 1990's "Home Alone" franchise. Kieran revealed in an interview with Esquire published March 27 that his dad - an actor himself - had all seven try to be actors, though only Macaulay (who his siblings call Mack), Kieran, and Rory pursued it seriously.

The family grew up in the Yorkville section of Manhattan, and Kieran says that even though he was just a kid himself, he felt bad for the way fame affected Macaulay's life. "Poor f*cking guy," he told Esquire of his brother.

Based on the best-selling collection by Cheryl Strayed, the limited series explores the author’s journey toward healing herself and others.

Check out the “Tiny Beautiful Things” trailer:

Also arriving on Hulu in April is the series adaptation of the best-selling novel “Saint X.” The series is based on Alexis Schaitkin’s novel of the same name and follows a woman’s dangerous pursuit of her older sister’s disappearance on an idyllic Caribbean vacation. Through multiple timelines, the series explores all the traumatic ripples the mystery created for countless people. The series will star Alycia Debnam-Carey,...

What’s Coming to Hulu in April 2023
Image
Even if you’ve signed up for every streaming service out there, it can feel monumental when a title moves from one to another. In April, Netflix mainstay “New Girl” moves to Hulu; still streaming, but not where fans are used to finding it — like rearranging the furniture in your apartment and waking up surprised every day that the couch is over there now.

But what’s important is that “New Girl” lives on, now joining Hulu’s own TV and movie library and originals from Freeform, FX, National Geographic, and more. Later in the month, Leila Gerstein’s “Saint X” — based on the novel by Alexis Schaitkin — premieres with three episodes, recounting the story of a young girl found dead during a family vacation and the sister piecing it together years later. Alycia Debnam-Carey, Josh Bonzie, West Duchovny, Jayden Elijah, Bre Francis, Kenlee Anaya Townsend, Betsy Brandt, and Michael Park star.

How Cindy Williams Inspired the Steve Martin and Diane Keaton-Starring ‘Father of the Bride’ Remake
Image
Nancy Meyers, co-writer and producer of the 1991 Father of the Bride movie starring Steve Martin and Diane Keaton, says late actress Cindy Williams inspired the remake.

In an Instagram post remembering the Laverne & Shirley star, who died last Wednesday at the age of 75, Meyers expressed her sadness over hearing of Williams’ death. And in a brief anecdote, the writer and producer of the film directed by ex-husband Charles Shyer revealed how the beloved TV icon helped make the ’90s romantic comedy a reality.

“What few people know is that it was Cindy’s idea to remake Father of the Bride,” Meyers recalled. “She told me she was watching the Spencer Tracey [sic] version on TV one night and thought it would be a great movie to remake.”

Meyers went on to add that Williams not only “made it happen” but altered her professional trajectory in Hollywood as a result — all...

Golden Globes record: Steve Martin (‘Only Murders in the Building’) would be oldest TV star to win
Image
In 2019, 74-year-old Michael Douglas triumphed on his first Best TV Comedy Actor Golden Globe bid for “The Kominsky Method” and thus became the oldest person ever honored by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for lead acting on a continuing series. Last year, “Only Murders in the Building” star Steve Martin almost broke this record by two years, but ultimately came up short against Jason Sudeikis. With the reigning champ currently out of contention, Martin now has a second chance to make Golden Globes history.

Martin’s Best TV Comedy Actor bid for the second season of Hulu’s “Only Murders” already makes him the oldest man to ever compete in the category. He surpasses Wilfrid Hyde-White, who was eight months younger than Martin is now when he unsuccessfully vied for the prize as the star of “The Associates” in 1980. He lost to Alan Alda (“M*A*S*H”), who was...

Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, and Jack Black in The Holiday (2006)
Where to Watch and Stream ‘The Holiday’ in 2022
Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, and Jack Black in The Holiday (2006)
“The Holiday” (2006) falls in the fan-favorite canon of Christmas films every year for its sincerely heartfelt story of love found in the least-expected places. And given that it’s a yearly tradition for many, you might be wondering where to stream “The Holiday” right now.

A classic switcheroo from romantic comedy filmmaker veteran Nancy Meyers trades Amanda (Cameron Diaz) for Iris (Kate Winslet) as the two women decide to participate in a home swap when they aren’t having luck with love. Iris’ love for Jasper (Rufus Sewell) remains unrequited while Amanda’s longtime boyfriend Ethan (Edward Burns) has cheated on her, and she doesn’t exactly feel sad about it, so she kicks him out of her fancy LA mansion (she cuts movie trailers for a living).

Amanda heads to Iris’ cozy cottage just outside London, where Iris’ brother Graham (Jude Law) comes calling drunk late one night. Of...

The Daily Stream: Private Benjamin Is An Unapologetic Feminist Icon
Image
(Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they've been watching, why it's worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)

The Movie: "Private Benjamin" (1980)

Where You Can Stream It: Showtime

The Pitch: Judy Benjamin (Goldie Hawn) has dreamed of one thing since she was eight years old, according to the film's opening title card: essentially, to be a wife. Specifically, "All I want [...] is a big house ... nice clothes, two closets, a live-in maid, and a professional man for a husband." "Private Benjamin" starts by giving Judy everything she's ever wanted, starting with a huge wedding to a professional man named Yale Goodman (played perfunctorily by Albert Brooks), who promptly dies while consummating their marriage later that same night.

Judy was a divorcée (she was previously married at 20) and widow by the age of 28. Her family didn't know what to do with her,...

Steve Martin Says His Retirement Announcement Was 'A Little Overstated'
Image
Reports of Steve Martin's impending retirement may have been greatly exaggerated, or "a little overstated," by the actor himself. Martin made headlines last month when he seemed to indicate that he would be hanging up his hat after Hulu's Emmy-nominated "Only Murders in the Building" series wraps up. The show has earned Martin and his costar and longtime collaborator Martin Short dual nominations in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series category, putting them head-to-head in tonight's awards ceremony.

Maybe it's just the thrill of awards night, but on the red carpet at the Emmys, Martin seemed to backtrack a bit on some of his comments in August, when he said, "When this television show ['Only Murders in the Building'] is done, I'm not going to seek others. I'm not going to seek other movies. I don't want to do cameos. This is, weirdly, it."

Only Murders In The Building Fans Will Want To Watch These 10 Steve Martin And Martin Short Movies Next
Image
In July 2022, Craig Erwich, the President of Hulu Originals and ABC Entertainment, deemed "Only Murders in the Building" the "true crown jewel" of Hulu's programming. The true-crime satire has charmed audiences across generations, thanks, in part, to its intergenerational casting choices and self-aware dialogue. Selena Gomez's Mabel brings fresh and deadpan humor to the Arconia, pairing well with the outlandish physical comedy from Steve Martin's Charles and Martin Short's Oliver. To date, the killer series is the most-watched comedy in Hulu's streaming history and earned a Season 3 renewal even before Season 2 debuted.

However, "Only Murders in the Building" isn't Martin and Short's first rodeo together. The iconic duo has starred opposite each other in a handful of comedy films over the past few decades before putting on their best podcasting voices to solve murder mysteries in the Big Apple. While not every film they've starred in stands the test of time,...

For a man who spent the bulk of the 1970s standing on stages all by himself, Steve Martin has a remarkable track record with collaboration in Hollywood. From his first TV writing gig to his Grammy-winning musical pair-ups, here’s a look at some of Martin’s most fruitful creative partnerships. (Read THR’s cover story on Steve Martin here.)

Emmys spotlight: Steve Martin (‘Only Murders in the Building’) gives his best performance in 20 years
Image
Steve Martin finally has his first chance at an Emmy nomination in the Best Comedy Actor category for his performance as Charles-Haden Savage on Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” a series he created with John Hoffman. Playing a once-successful actor who now leads a lonely life in a lavish apartment building, Martin brings his gifts for comedy and drama to a dazzling, three-dimensional performance I think is his best since 1999’s “Bowfinger” more than 20 years ago.

The actor’s comedic line deliveries and moments of slapstick humor are inspired, and the more complex dramatic shades he brings to this well-written character make the performance shine. As Joel Keller (Decider) praises, “It’s been a minute since we’ve seen Martin, but we appreciate his later-in-life desire to find the funny in emotional moments and less broad, physical shtick.” Emmys voters, take notice.

Nancy Meyers to Write, Direct and Produce New Movie for Netflix
Image
Nancy Meyers is bringing her filmmaking talents (and her immaculate kitchens) to Netflix, where she’ll write, direct and produce a new feature film.

News of the partnership comes after Meyers and Netflix teamed to release the short film “Father of the Bride Part 3 (ish),” which debuted on the streamer’s social channels in 2020. The special project brought together the cast of “Father of the Bride” and “Father of the Bride Part II” — Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Kieran Culkin, George Newbern and Martin Short — for the first time in 25 years, with Robert De Niro, Florence Pugh, Alexandra Shipp and Ben Platt added to the mix. Meyers wrote and directed the Banks family reunion clip (produced by Reese Witherspoon), which benefitted World Central Kitchen.

Details about the new film are scarce, though the project is described as an ensemble comedy, a formula which Meyers has mastered over her career.

Watch as Father of the Bride Cast Reunites for Virtual Netflix Sequel
Image
The cast of Father of the Bride reunited after 25 years, bringing back many original characters for a Zoom-style new story in what Netflix is calling a "special sequel." Running about a half hour long, the quasi-sequel, dubbed Father of the Bride Part 3 (ish), was made available to watch for free on Netflix's Facebook and YouTube pages. The special reunion was put together for the benefit of the non-profit organization World Central Kitchen, which works to provide meals to millions of children, families, seniors, and frontline workers.

Reprising their roles from the original Father of the Bride movies from the 1990s, the reunion special stars Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, Kieran Culkin, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Martin Short, and George Newbern. Also featured in the special in new roles were several other fan favorite Hollywood stars, including Alexandra Shipp, Florence Pugh, Ben Platt, and Robert DeNiro. Watch: Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, Florence Pugh Team Up for ‘Father of the Bride Part 3-ish’
Image
Netflix reunited the cast of Father of the Bride and Father of the Bride Part II for a sort-of sequel, appropriately titled Father of the Bride Part 3-ish, that featured some pretty unexpected cameos. Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, Martin Short, Kieran Culkin, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, and George Newbern all reprised their roles from the original two films for the special, which was written and directed by Nancy Meyers and livestreamed (prerecorded) by Netflix earlier today to raise money for World Central Kitchen. In addition to the original cast, Florence Pugh and Ben Platt appeared as adult Megan and …...

Father of the Bride 3 (ish) Trailer Teases Netflix Reunion Special
Steve Martin and Kimberly Williams-Paisley in Father of the Bride (1991)
Father of the Bride, the 1991 remake of the classic 1950 film of the same name, managed to further cement comedy icon Steve Martin’s mid-career onscreen status as America’s (non-Clark-Griswold) well-meaning, but neurotically insecure movie dad. Indeed, its success spawned 1995’s Father of the Bride Part II, a remake of 1951 original sequel Father’s Little Dividend, before the franchise called it a day. However, a third chapter to reunite the saga of the Banks family, Father of the Bride Part 3 (ish), is now headed for Netflix—albeit with a major catch with regard to its format.

Netflix unveiled a surprise announcement for a “special event” dubbed Father of the Bride Part 3 (ish) on the eve of its premiere, which will stream simultaneously on Netflix and Facebook on Friday, September 25. While Netflix is playing things coy with its descriptive language, the rather abrupt nature of this rollout negates any notion of Part...

The 1990s comedy sequels that deserved better
Bill & Ted, Addams Family Values, Wayne's World 2 - the 1990s wasn't short of good comedy sequels. It's just not enough people watched them.

In recent times, Hollywood has enjoyed going back into the 1990s to come up with belated sequels to previous hit movies. So, we finally got Dumb & Dumber 2, for instance, whilst a third Clerks, a second Mallrats, a new Sister Act and a Naked Gun reboot are being cooked up somewhere. Further belated sequels? Zoolander 2 finally arrives next year, and Anchorman 2 celebrates, quietly, its second birthday this Christmas.

It was only at the end of the 1990s that comedy sequels suddenly really took off. There were exceptions beforehand of course, but few things raise the eyebrows of Hollywood high brass than lots of cash. This, whilst the enormous box office takings of Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me were in part down to an utterly inspired marketing campaign,...

The Top Father's Day Films Ever Made? Here Are Five Dads - Ranging from the Intellectual to the Pathological
'Father of the Bride': Steve Martin and Kimberly Williams. Top Five Father's Day Movies? From giant Gregory Peck to tyrant John Gielgud What would be the Top Five Father's Day movies ever made? Well, there have been countless films about fathers and/or featuring fathers of various sizes, shapes, and inclinations. In terms of quality, these range from the amusing – e.g., the 1950 version of Cheaper by the Dozen; the Oscar-nominated The Grandfather – to the nauseating – e.g., the 1950 version of Father of the Bride; its atrocious sequel, Father's Little Dividend. Although I'm unable to come up with the absolute Top Five Father's Day Movies – or rather, just plain Father Movies – ever made, below are the first five (actually six, including a remake) "quality" patriarch-centered films that come to mind. Now, the fathers portrayed in these films aren't all heroic, loving, and/or saintly paternal figures. Several are...

Don't Be a Party Pooper and Check Out This Fabulous Father of the Bride Reunion
Steve Martin
Steve Martin was honored on Thursday with the AFI Life Achievement Award, and while many of his famous pals came out to celebrate, there was one special guest that quickly stole the show: Martin Short. Steve and Martin, who costarred as George Banks and Franck Eggelhoffer in Father of the Bride and Father of the Bride Part II, got up to their old tricks on June 4 while walking the red carpet. Steve and Martin posed for hilarious photos, cracked each other up, and linked arms while making their way inside the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Diane Keaton, who played Steve's wife in the hit films, was also on hand to honor her longtime friend. But the night wasn't all about the funny duo. In addition to their cute reunion, the ceremony turned into one big Hollywood date night. Steve and his wife, Anne Stringfield, shared some adorable moments inside the theater,...

Steve Martin and Kimberly Williams-Paisley in Father of the Bride (1991)
Steve Martin denies involvement in rumored 'Father of the Bride 3' (Updated)
Steve Martin and Kimberly Williams-Paisley in Father of the Bride (1991)
If there’s going to be a Father of the Bride 3, someone might want to tell Steve Martin — who played title character George in 1991′s Father of the Bride and 1995′s Father of the Bride Part II.

After rumors about a possible third film — which may or may not involve Matty, the titular bride’s younger brother, getting married to another man — began circulating yesterday, Martin quickly jumped on Twitter to respond to reports saying he was set to reprise his role. According to Martin, he hasn’t seen a script or even been offered a part in the film.

Steve Martin to Return for Father Of The Bride 3; “Bride” Now Gay Son [Updated]
It's been over twenty years since Father of the Bride, the 1991 remake of the 1950 film about a father dealing with the emotional and financial costs of paying for his daughter's wedding. I haven't seen Father of the Bride or its 1995 sequel Father of the Bride Part II is over a decade, but I remember that they were charming enough with Steve Martin in the eponymous role and co-starring Diane Keaton as his wife, Nina. Since everything 90s is now lurching its way back into theaters, there's now word of Father of the Bride Part III with George Banks' facing a new upper-middle class problem: his son's gay marriage. Hit the jump for more. [Updated: Martin has tweeted a response to this news. Hit the jump for what he had to say] According to Nikki Finke, Charles Shyer would return to write and direct and Martin is on board to reprise the lead role. The big twist this time around is that Matty Banks (played by Kiernan Culkin...

Strong Bonds – 007 from Dr. No to Skyfall
British singer Adele has yet again proven herself to be a family friendly version of Amy Winehouse by recording a theme to a James Bond film, by (unlike the late Ms. Winehouse) actually getting the song recorded. And yeah, the song Skyfall (from the new James Bond film, the name of which I’m drawing a blank on…) sounds like the same kind of bland crap that normally gets made for these films. Just when I thought they’d maybe turned a corner with the Jack White-performed theme song from Quantum of Solace (perhaps the theme songs are inversely correlated with the quality of the films), which was so catchy that I could actually slap the meat curtains to it, as the common phrase goes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TOoPjeh_vkE&feature=player_embedded

Although, as everyone knows, no song will ever topple A-ha’s theme from...

Harold And Maude (Criterion) Hal Ashby’s masterpiece of black humor centers on a wealthy young man (Bud Cort) who’s obsessed with death and the septuagenarian (Ruth Gordon) with whom he finds true love. Fine screenplay by Colin Higgins. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Commentary by Hal Ashby biographer Nick Dawson, producer Charles Mulvehill; Illustrated audio excerpts from seminars by Ashby and Higgins; Interview with Cat Stevens. Widescreen. Mel Gibson and Danny Glover in Lethal Weapon (1987)
'I'm Too Old For This Sh**' Mash-Up, In Honor Of 'Lethal Weapon's' 25th Anniversary (Video)
Mel Gibson and Danny Glover in Lethal Weapon (1987)
You're getting too old for this: 25 years ago, on March 6, 1987, "Lethal Weapon" was released. The buddy-cop thriller not only cemented Mel Gibson's status as a household name after playing good-natured loose-canon (as opposed to now) Martin Riggs, but also created a social phenomenon still relevant to this day: "I'm getting too old for this shit."

The catchphrase, said numerous times throughout the "Lethal Weapon" series by Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover), has appeared in many movies over the last 25 years, often times in reference to the put-upon police detective himself. (The recent trailer for "Men In Black 3" features Will Smith uttering a PG variation on Murtaugh's famous one-liner.)

What you might not know? That "Lethal Weapon" wasn't the first film to utilize some form of the defeated turn-of-phrase. From "North by Northwest" and "The Sting" to Murtaugh himself, enjoy a mash-up of movie characters getting too old for this.
